Orianna feels like about as much of a support as Nidalee is. She has abilities that can be used in a supportive manner, but she can also deal massive damage when played as a normal caster.
I also tried playing her as an off-tank and had a lot of fun with that too.

I take weird masteries to upgrade both flash and ghost, and have a good amount of mana and mana regen from the start of the match.

I main Orianna and find that grabbing Replenishment (Solid Mp5) Seals and buying a Doran's Ring as my first item allows me to maintain somewhat comfortable amounts of mana from levels 1-3. After that, I buy boots and a Catalyst the Protector. The Catalyst tends to sustain me until around level 6-8 wherein beginning to use my ult drains my mana in a big way. Once I hit that point, I build a Rod of Ages and start getting blue buff whenever I can to accommodate the increased mana usage.

Though my build is admittedly flawed, (I'm working on it atm... I play it to amazing effect, but I feel like I could still be better.) it gives me unmatched dominance in solo-mid early and mid gameplay that carries on pretty well into late game. Though my late game burst pales in comparison to, say, Veigar, Orianna has an amazing amount of teamfight utility, and building a Wit's End mid game helps her stay active in teamfights despite the fact that I somewhat lack CDR in the current model of my build.

I also make sure to build Orianna adequately tanky to make up for the fact that her auto-attacking tends to get her in harm's way. (Harm's Way... That'd be an awesome name for an ability for a champion, lolol) Rod of Ages, Wit's End, and a lategame Zhonya's Hourglass all contribute to allowing me an astounding amount of survivability to facilitate the sustained DPS that Orianna is capable of dishing out during the interim where she's waiting for her Dissonance to cool down.

Bottom line: when played properly, Orianna may not have the amount of burst of her AP carry peers, but her ability to survive in teamfights through speed increases, shields, and item-based tankiness allows her to play a more active role in teamfights. Though she doesn't burst targets down in one combo, her damage is high enough to allow a ranged carry to clean up after she uses her ult and Dissonance, reducing squishy targets to just below half health immediately.

EDIT: And that's just my most commonly used build. I have different builds designed to hold solo top lane, out-sustain Nidalee and other sustain juggernauts in mid, and more. It's all about who you're up against and what you can do to match or outmatch them. If you can build to counter your opponents without compromising your mid/late game power, you can play almost any champion in any ELO without fear of being absolutely dominated in terms of build.
I checked out your guide; why don't you take a look at some of mine! Tell me what you like and don't like about them so that I might further flesh them out.

Exactly what I thought when I read that :P

It is somewhat a waste of an item slot. Yes, you will have some more defenses, but you shouldn't be tanking T_T.

And the extra damage per attack is unnecessary coz of your passive...and you shouldn't be focusing on your passive auto attacking, grab more AP so it does more damage and so does your ball, not just more AS for the attack T_T

And sorry, but your "Bottom Line" is wrong, she in fact can burst down targets in one combo ^^
