Let's brainstorm cookie-cutter builds for different types of champions. I figure that this could be a useful sticky, but am currently not quite sure whether it belong in Theory Crafting, General Discussion, or Build and Guide Discussion. Whatever, we'll work it out later. I'll start this off, I suppose.

Tank:
- Doran's Shield
- Boots
- Mercury's Treads
- Aegis of the Legion
- Banshee's Veil
- Sunfire Aegis
- Guardian Angel

The tank build is the most versatile, as you need to be able to adapt. For example, if they're primarily physical, skip the Banshee's Veil for a later time and rush a Sunfire Cape or even a Thornmail. Contrarily, if they have mostly magic damage, get Banshee's Veil or even a Force of Nature.

Ranged AD Carry
- Boots+3 Health Potion OR Doran's Blade OR Doran's Shield
- B. F. Sword
- Mercury's Treads OR Berserker's Greaves (for early game DPS, always sell this for Merc Treads later)
- Infinity Edge
- Zeal
- Banshee's Veil
- Last Whisper
- Phantom Dancer

Ranged AP Carry
- Doran's Ring
- Boots
- Catalyst the Protector
- Sorcerer's Shoes
- Rabadon's Deathcap
- Banshee's Veil
- Void Staff OR Abyssal Mask
- Zhonya's Hourglass

ALTERNATIVELY:

- Doran's Ring
- Boots
- Tear of the Goddess
- Catalyst the Protector
- Sorcerer's Shoes
- Rod of Ages
- Archangel's Staff
- Rabadon's Deathcap
- Banshee's Veil
- Zhonya's Hourglass

Anyone else have suggestions? Maybe one for tanky DPS, one for support, etc? I know it usually varies by character, but for maybe 80% of the champions in a certain category, there are staple builds that are usually very good on them.

Seriously. I do that if I'm forced back a lot and I usually come out fine o.o Then I transition into IE/LW->Banshee's Veil

Some champions benefit from having Void Staff AND Abyssal Mask. But I guess I'd have to graph to see which ones they are as I don't have any generalized facts about that yet.

I think the builds are pretty good, but I'd probably go for a FoN over BV on any durable champion. You're better off mitigating extra damage than blocking a spell that doesn't do all that much damage anyway.

Here's my cookie-cutter build for tanky DPS:
Some good boots
Frozen Mallet
Atma's Impaler
Force of Nature OR Banshee's Veil (FoN is often the best choice)
Sunfire Aegis

The order in which I usually buy things varies.

I don't think you should throw out 'complete' builds that one can't go wrong with. I fully support making a list of items for certain roles that one can't go wrong with though.

EDIT: Well, technically that's what you are doing either way. :P
