Champion Build Guide

[11.23] Menace To LoL Vex

By King Turtle
Build Introduction
So this mobafire is going to have 2 builds because I can see people making her a support pretty early into her release and wanted to try to make a build that I think could make her a good fit with most ADCs. Along with the support build is the main build, which puts her in the mid lane. Both should be sufficient for what their respective roles ask of them and viable enough to win.
Pros and Cons - Mid
Big Abilities - Your abilities as Vex are relatively easy to hit as most of them are large AOE spells that take up a solid chunk of lane. With that in mind, every hit with an ability will apply some form of DOT whether that's just Liandry's or Liandry's + Demonic.

High Base Damage- Vex has some really nice base damage(ignore E) and that makes her a more forgiving champion early game, as she has low scalings for the most part and like most champions, doesn't have much power before mythic. This will give you time to get mythic while still being able to bend over anyone that challenges you, aside from a few counters.

Low Early Game Mana Costs- One thing that I picked up when I first looked at her through those early clips sent to league youtubers was that her mana costs were pretty high. Luckily, her Q and E have scaling mana costs which are great as it allows for more ability spam without requiring Seraphs or Tear. Just a simple Manaflow band should be enough to keep your mana in check until you get Liandry's Anguish.

No Mobility- You have no mobility with Vex's kit and that can be a problem since your 2nd cast on R throws you directly into the fight, meaning there's a higher chance that if you let the fight go on longer than a few seconds you will get your *** beat. It also makes it harder to get away from champions that can lock you down like Morgana, Thresh, and Malzahar.

High Mid Game Mana Costs- Since Vex has scaling mana costs on Q and E the amount of resources you'll be using up as the game goes on will naturally increase. At max rank Q costs 20 more mana than 1st rank, and max rank E costs 40 more mana than 1st rank. It won't be a game changing issue due to you getting Liandry's and stacking mana runes, but it's something to be wary of in the case that you've been playing aggressively the entire match.

Weak Early CSing- For some people who aren't accustomed to farming with low AD champions like Vex, Ryze, and Lissandra, farming may be challenging due to the precision needed for last hitting. Vex curbs that a little with her Q being a good wave clear tool, but it's best not to spam too much with it as it will drain your mana fast. Once you get Liandry's you can be more liberal with your usage but until then it's best to get used to last hitting.
Runes- Mid

  • Electrocute Is one of Vex's best keystones as it's easy to trigger consistently and adds some nice punch to your punch. Definitely a solid pickup and can be a big part of your early damage.

  • Will be good for lich bane as you can fear someone, then get sheen passive AND the bonus true damage from cheap shot to chunk the enemy further.

  • Eyeball is just for some bonus AP. It's not a ton but anything helps.

  • Ultimate Hunter will be great because your Ult is so impactful it only makes sense to have it up as soon as possible at all times. Especially late game when you can use it to jump into fights and completely turns things around.

  • Manaflow band will give you permanent bonus mana and restore missing mana every 5 seconds.

  • Finally, Gathering Storm will keep you healthy in every phase of the game and help scale you up as you get more items.

    Secondary Rune Page

  • Conqueror is going to be more useful for the adaptive power than the healing for Vex. Her kit doesn't get max stacks very easily, so the part to focus on is your adaptive power per stack. Each stack of Conquerer grants you 2-5 ability power for 6 seconds (depending on level) up to a maximum of 24-60 ability power (also depending on level). This bonus AP is going to be incredible in fights and early trades.

  • Presence Of Mind will be great for mana regeneration and mana retention on takedown. Since it lasts the entire game it will have value at any fight or skirmish throughout the match.

  • Alacrity will be to help make your autos feel a little smoother and make it easier to proc lich bane.

  • Coup De Grace is perfect for finishing off low hp opponents.

  • Manaflow band will give you permanent bonus mana and restore missing mana every 5 seconds.

  • Finally, Gathering Storm will keep you healthy in every phase of the game and help scale you up as you get more items.
Mid- Liandry's Anguish

Liandry's Anguish is an excellent item on Vex as it gives plenty of AP, plenty of Mana, and her kit makes getting that burn damage super easy. Your abilities work in any range dilemma within reason. Against a Melee matchup? W. Against a ranged matchup? E+Q+auto them into the void and get free Damage Over Time(DOT) all ******** day. Not to mention the item is incredible for teamfights and just doing damage as a whole. you get everything youd want for Vex plus DOT to further tilt your enemies.
Mid- Horizon Focus

Horizon Focus is a wonderful item on her because you can trigger Horizon passive off your fears or just your abilities since Q, E, and R go further than or stop at 700 units. It's incredibly easy to activate and the base AP the item itself gives is a great touch.
Mid- Shadowflame

Shadowflame is a solid item for Vex as we get some penetration, and a lot of AP to throw around. It's good for shield comps and will make close skirmishes easier as the pen increases the lower the enemies health gets. It's essentially the ap equivalent to Serpent's Fang but better because the base stats are more worth it in comparison.
Pros and Cons - Support
Good Poke- As Vex you have great poke with your massive *** abilities and being able to hit people from virtually anywhere within reason. She pairs nicely with ADCs that have CC in their kits or that can take advantage of that CC like Ashe and Kai'Sa. She's a great poke support and has a variety of keystones that can make her a menace in the support role.

Good Early Game- Vex having such high base damage in her kit makes her a powerhouse in the early game, and can take great advantage of that with her fear as it allows for hit and run strats to burst your opponent down over time. It can be even better in the support role where everyone is squishy.

Good at protecting ADC- Vex is an anti-assassin mage. Her kit allowing her to cancel dashes means you can guard your ADC against assassins a lot better than most supports. you're essentially your ADCs safety bubble and anyone who tries to get near it gets popped. You can also follow in on fights to stay with the ADCs that want to be in the middle of the fight like Draven, Lucian, and Kai'Sa.

No Mobility- Against certain matchups there's a good chance you can get locked down if you're not positioned properly by champions like Nautilus, Braum, and Zyra who have easy to activate hard CC. Do your best to stay away from heavy CC champions and poke them out of lane instead.

Slower Power Scaling- As a support you're naturally going to have less power than mid up until you get to around mid game and start getting into your Lich Bane and Cosmic Drive. Up until that point, you'll be more valuable for your fear and Everfrost active.
Runes- Support

  • Glacial Augment's rework has made it an incredible tool for supports or just anyone with a lot of CC. With Vex her fear will trigger glacial meaning a well placed E can lock down both the support and the ADC for some easy trades.

  • It's a free stopwatch. Not much else to know about it.

  • Biscuits give some sustain so you aren't being forced to back constantly

  • Cosmic Insight will make it so your sums are available more often.

  • Font Of Life is a rune that's easy to proc with Vex as your fear is up every 20ish seconds and is easy to trigger with your massive abilities.

  • Overgrowth is for some bonus HP to go alongside your W shield.
Support- Spellthief's Edge

for our ward item we're going to run Spellthief's because you can get poke off easily and anyone with a dash has to be careful not to dash around a lot because of your fear, making it even easier to keep them locked down. With how good your kit is right now you shouldn't struggle much getting gold stacks.
Support- Everfrost

I'm a firm believer in supports going support items or at least having a support mythic. I don't think someone going lux support and then building ludens + full ap makes her a support. And, the nice thing about Everfrost is that the item gives you a bit of both. You can still deal damage and feel like a mage without totally sacrificing your power, and you get some solid utility which can set your team up for success. It's incredibly powerful when you can R into any fight, get an easy everfrost on the enemy carry, and some collateral if the team is grouped up. Every hit of everfrost is another opportunity to make a play or let your team perform a gamer move by bashing the carry's skull into the dirt as they sit there and take it because they have no other choice.
Support- Cosmic Drive

Cosmic Drive is going to be an excellent item on her because you're already getting a solid amount of ability haste from Everfrost and Ionian boots, so why not go all out? It's a great value item that will give move speed and pair with Lich Bane to make you a super quick, low cooldown, emo yordle that pegs their opponents because they can.
Boots- Both Lanes

Mid- For mid lane we're going to go sorc shoes for that easy magic pen. That's all there really is to say about that.

Support- For support we're going to get Ionian boots to pair with cosmic drive and Everfrost so we can get fat ability haste and spam your abilities more.
Lich Bane- Both Lanes

Mid- Lich Bane is a great item on Vex because you can get your marked proc off Auto, so you can E+auto and get the marked proc. Add on lich bane and you have a sheen proc from E, into an empowered auto from both your passive and lich bane. it's great for mid game burst and getting initial damage off in skirmishes. It's also got bonus move speed which will allow you to get in range sooner.

Support- Lich Bane is great for similar reasons as mid. Great combination with passive and sheen, bonus move speed which pairs into your Cosmic Drive and Boots. it's easy to hit with your slows and fears and can really **** up ADCs who aren't expecting it.
Void Staff- Both Lanes

Mid- In Mid, Void Staff is going to be good for taking down people who get 1 or 2 MR items like a Wit's End or a Banshees Veil and will pair with Sorc Shoes to make sure that little bit of MR doesn't **** you over later in the game. It's also a great item for late game gold as it's an incredibly cheap 6th item which should be easy to get.

Support- For support it's going to be essentially the same reason as mid, you just won't have sorc shoes. Therefore we'll take advantage of our metric **** tons of ability haste instead and get our abilities back sooner so we can use that magic pen more often.
Early Game- Both
Mid- You'll want to establish some early poke to begin stacking Manaflow and understanding your enemies habits on stuff like how they CS, how they dodge skillshots, and how aggressive they are. Make sure through the entire laning phase you keep up on CS and pay attention to your mini map for pings and incoming ganks. For the most part you just want to beat your opponent early and scale ahead of them into mid game.

Support- As support, you'll also want to establish poke to build up your support item and your manaflow band. The best case would be to zone the enemy ADC from farm and ensure that your ADC can have a comfortable lane. Be sure to get control wards on backs and keep the river/tri bush warded(depends on your side) and make sure that you stay aware of where the enemy jungler is to avoid being surprised by a gank or end up giving a free dragon. If you can, coordinate with your jungler to get a gank and pull ahead of the enemy bot. Finally, don't forget to get a sweeping lens whenever you get wards on your starting item.
Mid Game- Both
Mid- Once you get into mid game, do some extra CSing only if needed, then start using your kit to gank other lanes when there's an opening and open up space for your team. Help contest objectives and be ready to go in and disrupt the entire skirmish with your passive. Your burst will either kill the enemy or set your team up to better win the fight.

Support- As support, continue to protect your ADC and finish up Shard Of True Ice if needed. Depending on how your ADC is performing you can either continue to take bot tower, roam to open up mid, or help the jungler with objectives when needed like Dragon. By now you'll have Everfrost so getting involved in skirmishes will have more of an impact as well. You should also have a Sweeping Lens by now.
Late Game- Both
Mid- Once you get to late game there's not much else to do aside from be a bursty ***** and do your best to zone off objectives. If you can, try to get into the backline and use your giant AOEs to manhandle the squishies. If you want, you can also sell boots for another item like Cosmic Drive, if you're at that point in the game. Also make sure you get elixirs when possible.

Support- Late Game as support is going to be similar. Just make sure you're in position to best use Everfrost Active in teamfights, and make sure you're keeping objectives and important areas in the jungle warded. If you get to the point where you want to sell boots you can get a defensive item like a zhonyas/banshees veil, or you can go all out and try for a Rabadons if you even have the gold for that.
Build Conclusion
These 2 builds are effective in their own rights and are a good start for Vex as Riot makes changes and balances the champion. There's a good amount of paths you can go with her for items and runes, but I've found that I prefer these 2 builds because of their specific advantages and uses in a match. She's incredibly fun and running people down as an emo yordle with a hard on for ****boy Veego is great. Hopefully you find success with this build like I did and have a good time. GLHF!
