Alistar shouldn’t be the hardest of matchups as he is eager to engage on you. Play around his W Q combo cooldown and you should be fine. Don’t dive too deep behind him as he can bump you into the tower.
Amumu
Amumu’s early aggression can be a real struggle in lane. Try to play safe in the early levels as he has some great all in potential at lvl 1 and 2.
Ashe
Imperial mandate Ashe is a pain in the Ashe with her constant slows and her R that can stun you in place which makes engaging a lot harder. She will try to run you down in lane if she has the opportunity. Try to avoid getting poked down and maybe buy boots of swiftness to reduce the slow.
Bard
Bard is a champion that is pretty difficult to play against. You can’t keep up with his roaming potential so try to make plays in lane if he is missing. Also play around his Q and carefully place your W so he can’t immediately stun you after you go in.
Blitzcrank
Blitzcrank is one of the easiest matchups for you. If he pulls in your ADC, you follow with your E. If he pulls you in, you can decide to dash out with your E or look for an engage with your W and R. Play around Blitzcranks Q and his R and you shouldn’t face too many problems.
Brand
Brand is a matchup that I call a big yikes. The champion is obnoxious to play against and deals tons of damage. In this lane you have to avoid his W and play around his passive, otherwise it’s doomed.
Braum
Braum is not a difficult matchup. Try to play around his passive and identify how aggressive the Braum actually is. If he is really aggressive play a with a little care and you will be fine. His ult can stop your engage so be careful for that.
Fiddlesticks
Fiddlesticks is annoying to play against as he claims bush control and won’t let go. He is constantly looking to fear you which interrupts your mobility and makes you vulnerable for the enemy ADC. It’s important to establish good vision versus a fiddlesticks to avoid getting feared, ulted out of vision or ganked. Fiddlestick will have the upper hand in the vision wars as his passive Scarecrow Effigy is really strong for this.
Galio
Galio is a matchup that can go both ways. He either CC’s you to death or you dodge around his E and blow him up afterwards.
Gragas
Gragas shouldn’t be the hardest matchup. If you play around his E you won’t find any difficulty dealing with him.
Janna
Janna can be annoying as she pokes a lot with her W in lane and she can avoid your engages by using her Q or R at the right time. If you are very patient in this matchup you should be fine.
Karma
Karma is a hard lane as she offers a lot of utility and damage. Avoid her R + Q and you should be fine. If you play around this the lane is winnable.
Leona
Leona is one of those hard engage supports that create some difficulties in laning phase. Play around her E and R and be very patient in lane, because you will outshine her in teamfights if you play it correctly.
Lulu
The moonstone meta does favour Lulu a lot and her sustain and buffing for her ADC is annoying. Her W and R can interrupt your engage but once on top of Lulu she can’t do much.
Lux
Lux is not as annoying as the other mages in the botlane as she is easy to play around if she misses her Q. The only problem is when you get hit by her full combo and your HP bar is deleted.
Maokai
Maokai is annoying as he gets on top of you easily and he can CC you long enough with his W and Q to avoid you from dashing or running away from him. Also have to be careful on face checking bushes as the sampling brigade is waiting to blow up in your face.
Morgana
Morgana is the worst matchup you can get. Her Q roots you for a long time, her E mitigates your engages and she deals tons of damage. I permaban this champion.
Nami
Nami is another enchanter with some disengage built into her kit to make your life difficult. Her E is slowing you and her Q stuns you for a second or so. Her ult is the perfect tool to stop you from engaging on her team so definitely try to dance around this.
Nautilus
Nautilus has tons of cc but to land the most of it he has to get close to you by, for example, hitting a hook. His ult is something different but in most games he won’t use it on you. A great tip to find a kill in lane is to stick next to walls. If he throws his Q at you, dodge it (for example with your E). When his Q connects he will follow it into the wall and you can re-engage on him with your W or R to secure a free kill.
Pantheon
Pantheon is a champion that can one shot either you or your ADC and is considered a hard matchup. Try to stay out of his W range, and if he jumps on your ADC try to W him immediately.
Poppy
Poppy is niche support pocket pick that is really bad to play against. Her W cancels your W and E so when you dash in you can’t get out, which will result in you dying. She will also ult you away if you do find a window to engage. Poppy is not worth banning but do consider dodging if the enemy plays poppy support.
Pyke
Pyke is an easy matchup as you can match his mobility. Same as for Blitzcrank, if your ADC gets pulled in follow him and look for a counter engage.
Rakan
Just don't play blindpick ;) If you do however you should be able to punish him as you read this guide!
Rell
Rell is a champion that can make you stop moving. Play around her W and try to punish her if possible, but she will have the better time during laning phase. Her ult is also annoying if you try to engage.
Renata Glasc
Playing against Renata Glasc feels like playing against a Lux. Dodge her Q and E and you are good to go. The only annoying part in this is the W of Renata. This will make a 2 vs 2 way harder than it needs to be. Her ult will not really effect you if you don't get oneshot by your adc. I haven't found out what the interaction is when you are in your ult and you go berserk.
Senna
Senna, especially fasting Senna or Senna with glacial augment, is a really bad matchup as she outranges you by a mile and deals tons of damage. Also her W is really annoying in lane as it is pretty hard cc.
Seraphine
Seraphine is a poke heavy champ and as we know that’s annoying if you are short range or melee. Seraphine can poke from miles away with her Q and E and has some good sustain with her W. If she misses the root on her passive empowered E or her ult you can all in her. Play around her passive and her ult.
Sett
Sett in not a hard matchup. If you stay at a distance so he can’t use his E, the Sett support pick is pretty useless. When you engage you have to be careful of his R that he does not one-shot your team with you as his victim.
Shaco
Shaco’s boxes can be annoying in laning phase, but in teamfights he does not have a lot to offer. Play around him going invisible and punish him outside of his comfort zone, which are his boxes.
Sona
Sona is an annoying poke champion but laning against her should be fine as she has no CC. Play around her ability cooldowns and care for her ult. If you do this you should win lane 9/10 times.
Soraka
I consider Soraka one of the most easy matchups as she does not have a lot to offer. If you dodge her Q she is pretty useless. The only thing that can interrupt your engage is her E.
Swain
Swain is really painful to play against. He pulls you in with his E or any CC that is in your lane, after that he one-shots you.
Tahm Kench
Tahm Kench is an easy lane if he can’t get near you to stack his passive. Stay at a good distance of the from so he can’t unbench himself in lane.
Taric
Taric has a lot of sustain and will fight back at you when you all in him. Dodge out on his E otherwise he will chunk you really low. His ult will mitigate your all in potential so back of when he pops the ult and go back in when it has timed out.
Thresh
Thresh is another hook champ which makes this matchup look easy. However, you have to be careful of his E that can cancel your W and makes you vulnerable for his hook.
Vel'Koz
Vel'Koz pokes you down in lane which will probably force you under tower with half HP. Get used to his Q and how it angles and play around his E.
Xerath
Xerath is annoying as he can keep refreshing his mana with his passive and keep throwing tons of damage at you. Dodge around his abilities and look for engage windows when he oversteps.
Vex
Vex is good against dashing champs, as her passive allows to deal bonus damage to them. Our boy Rakan doesn't do anything but dashing in and out of fights, so Vex is really likely to win every trade. Also the high burst in her kit is really annoying, which leads to a lot of lane pressure.
Yuumi
Yuumi is not having loads of laning pressure which means you can put a lot of pressure onto the enemy ADC. Yuumi has a lot of sustain, but once your ADC or you get anti heal lane is winnable.
Zilean
Zilean’s bombs are annoying as he can stun you using the minions. His E can slow you and makes your life difficult unless you can dash on your allies. Play away from your own minions and look for him to overstep.
Zyra
Zyra her plants can be annoying and she has some steady poke with her Q. Play around her E and punish her when she misplaces her plants or E.
Aphelios
Aphelios has some great scaling potential into late game. You should not look to aggressively trade when Aphelios his weapons don’t fancy an aggressive trade. It takes some time and understanding to fully maximize this synergy and know when to trade when playing next to an Aphelios.
Ashe
Playing with an Ashe feels like a really standard lane. She can slow with her auto attacks or her W which creates an easier setup for your engage. Also her R will help in doing this. Ashe does lack some mobility so be aware of that.
Caitlyn
Caitlyn can do a good job in poking out the enemy botlane which you can’t do with your short range. Look for windows when Caitlyn hit her E or when an enemy steps into a trap.
Draven
Draven can feel a bit difficult to play with as you have to time your W well because his E can put enemies out. Furthermore play around his axe landings and time your engages well.
Ezreal
Ezreal has the same benefit as Caitlyn of easily poking out the enemy botlane. He has some mobility with his E to distance himself from danger. He can jump out of your E range which can make life a little more difficult.
Jhin
Jhin is definitely not like a hyper carry but he does synergise pretty well with Rakan. As you land a W or a Q he can root people and setup a chain of CC resulting in a kill. He also has some built in self peel with the speed after his fourth shot, so you can play a little more aggressive in teamfights.
Jinx
Jinx is a hyper carry that can easily reposition herself with her passive. This means you can play a little more aggressive in teamfights and look for windows too engage. In lane her W and E can help you find an engage for a 2v2 kill.
Kai'Sa
Kaisa is a really strong hyper carry that has some good early game damage with her W and passive combo. Look for a level 2 all in with Kai’sa and start snowballing from there (this is matchup dependant, don’t try this into Nautilus + Draven).
Kalista
Kalista’s ult gives you some extra safety when you mess up an engage, so you have more space to get creative. She has some built in peel as well, unless she gets slowed by exhaust for example. Might look into building a Mikael’s if you play versus a lot of slows.
Kog'Maw
Playing with Kog’maw feels a little awkward as he has long range with his W so he won’t be following up so closely as other ADC’s. This can be outside of your E range, so you have to be careful on the engages you make as there is a possibility you can’t dash out.
Lucian
Lucian is one of those aggressive ADC’s that can make this lane into a kill lane. Immense pressure and a lot of burst damage which can result in winning fights at level 2 or 3.
Miss Fortune
Miss fortune is not a hyper carry and does not have a lot of mobility outside her W. She does offer a lot in teamfights where you do have to find the right engages in offer to make her ult viable in fights. Laning should not lead to any disadvantages, her E can slow people to lock them down easy with your W.
Samira
Samira’s aggressive playstyle and her passive synergise really well with Rakan. You have great all in potential together and can definitely shine in teamfights together.
Senna
Senna offers great sustain in lane and scales pretty good into the late game. She also has good setup for your engage with her W so definitely play around this. When you engage she can also provide some extra safety with her R.
Sivir
Sivir is a champion that likes to farm a lot and only start doing damage at 3 items (considering she does not go for a lethality build). In teamfights she offers great utility with her ult and she requires a lot of peel to lead your team to victory.
Tristana
Tristana is a really aggressive ADC which you can jump in and out with. From level 2 on this duo forms a great threat for the enemy botlane and you can snowball your early advantages into late game easily.
Twitch
As Rakan you have great opportunities to play around Twitch. You can cluster a lot of people together so Twitch his ult will hit more people and you can provide him a lot of peel late game if that is the way you chose to play.
Varus
Varus can also feel as an awkward lane partner if he goes for a more poke oriented build. If that is the case just hang around and try to get good disengages as Varus lacks mobility. If he goes for a hyper carry build look for windows to setup a CC chain with his R.
Vayne
Vayne needs some safety in the early game as she scales extremely well into the late game. As Rakan this could result in some trouble if you end up in a poke lane. Late game your peel for Vayne is insane and doing so can result in a victory!
Xayah
What should I say, you just synergise really well with Xayah. The extra benefit of Lover’s Leap increases your tempo and the benefits you get from Xayah W and your E are huge advantages in lane. Definitely look to play Rakan if your ADC has some experience on Xayah.
Yasuo
You can have some great synergy with Yasuo is your knock up can tag several enemies for his R. Furthermore his mobility through minion waves can help you gap close towards the enemy.
Zeri
Zeri feels really good to play with. She has a lot of utility herself which also enables Rakan's utility more. Definetly a strong botlane duo.

Greetings fellow support players, welcome to my Rakan guide! My summoner name is Aerenax on EUW. Since Rakan came out I fell in love with the champion as he has a very versatile and unique playstyle. At the moment I have around 800k mastery points in Rakan and I would like to share my knowledge and experience with you guys! I really appreciate some constructive feedback as this is my first guide and I do want to know what you guys think of the information or the guide layout itself. If you have any personal questions feel free to ask them aswell!
This guide has been written and checked by me. If you have any additions feel free to contact me. I am planning to update the guide every patch to keep you guys up to date on the newest builds, strategies and matchups. This guide is still work in progress and I am also looking for someone that can help me make some fancy banners for the headers for the guide, if you are or know someone who wants to help me upgrade the guide, please send me a message! For other Rakan questions check out the RakanMains reddit or join the RakanMains discord at: https://discord.gg/QFXHtxMzFn
I hope this guide will make you play Rakan with the same enthusiasm as me, so let’s Battle Dance right into it!
Why Rakan?
Rakan is a versatile support that can fulfil different tasks within a team:
Your follow up on engage champions is insane.
You can be a great peeler for your carries.
You can be the main frontline for your team.
You can hard carry your team by going ap if your team lacks ap damage.
All these playstyles find a lot of success and will be explained further in this guide.
PROS
+ High mobility + Great AP scaling + Great teamfighting potential + A lot of roaming potential + Special synergy with Xayah + Versatile playstyle
Rakan is a champion with endless ways to play him. His mobility makes you a great engage tool for your team while you have the safety to dash back to your team using your E – Battle Dance. Furthermore your peeling potential is ginormous with your Q – Gleaming Quill and your E – Battle Dance in combination with Guardian. If you choose to go for the full AP Rakan build, you will notice that you have great burst potential and you are a real backline threat to the enemy team. Rakan is a champion that can win or lose a game with the right engage so don’t underestimate your importance!
CONS
- Squishy in lane - High cooldowns early game - Weak if CC’ed - Reliant on teammates - Rakan is considered ranged which makes a melee support quest difficult
Laning as Rakan can feel a little rough into high engage champions like Rell and Leona as they can lock you down and one-shot you. Furthermore Rakan has high base cooldowns on his abilities which require some Ability haste to compensate. Rakan is very reliant on teammates to make full use of his mobility of his E Battledance and especially when not playing with a Xayah it can feel like your E - Battle Dance has a really short range. Lastly Rakan requires a lot of games to fully master so I do recommend not giving up after one game and also look into pro vods to see how they position in lane, etc.
Every (40.0 - 14.5) seconds, Rakan gains a (33 - 254 (+90% AP)) Shield. Rakan's Attacks and Abilities against enemy champions reduce this Cooldown by 1 second.
Lover's Leap (Passive) RANGE: 0 COST: 0 mana COOLDOWN: 0
Recall together and save some time. If either Rakan or Xayah is recalling, the other may move nearby and activate their own recall to join them. Both reach base at the time of which the initiator's recall ends.
Gleaming Quill (Q) RANGE: 900 COST: 60 mana COOLDOWN: 12/11/10/9/8
Rakan flings a magical feather that deals (70 - 250 (+75% AP)) magic damage to the first enemy hit.
If the feather hits a champion or epic jungle monster, restore (18 - 120 (+70% AP)) Health to Rakan and surrounding allies after 3 seconds or immediately if he touches an allied champion.
Grand Entrance (W) RANGE: 600 COST: 50/60/70/80/90 mana COOLDOWN: 18/16.5/15/13.5/12
Rakan dashes, then spirals into the air. All enemies in it's radius are Knocked Up for 1 second and dealt (70 - 290 (+70% AP)) magic damage.
Rakan dashes to an allied champion, granting them (40 - 140 (+80% AP)) Shield for 3 seconds.
Rakan can Recast this Ability once within 5 seconds.
The Quickness (R) COLLISION RADIUS: 150 COST: 100 mana COOLDOWN: 130/110/90
Gain 75% Move Speed for 4 seconds. Rakan deals (100 - 300 (+50% AP)) magic damage and Charms enemies for 1/1.25/1.5 second(s) the first time he touches them. The first champion touched grants Rakan 150% decaying Move Speed.
Ability Sequence
The most common leveling sequence for Rakan is the one I am using in this guide which follow R>W>E>Q. There are some variants to this skill sequence such as people maxing out their W first instead of getting 3 points in Q for lane pressure. The leveling of your abilities can change from time to time and is dependant on your needs in game.

Summoner Spells
SUMMONER SPELLS -
FLASH: You take Flash in all your games as you can use it to surprise the enemy by a Flash >> Grand Entrance or get in range to use your Battle Dance on one of your allies. Be careful as you cannot flash (and W) in the first 0.5 seconds after ulting.
IGNITE: You take Ignite in about 95% of your games to add some all in threat at level 2. Furthermore it’s a good tool to use in early fights when up versus some healing supports to reduce healing.
EXHAUST: You only take exhaust if the enemy team is stacked with assassins and one-shot potential. You want to peel your ADC from all this damage and you can reduce their damage by 40%. It also works to slow down enemies to catch them when they are alone, because Exhaust also applies a 30% slow.
HEAL: The only reason you want to take Heal is that your ADC decides to take Cleanse, Ignite or Exhaust and you feel like you do need heal in a certain matchup. I personally think that you only require heal when your ADC asks you to take it.
Runes - Resolve
RESOLVE
Guardian is the go to rune for the traditional Rakan support playstyle. Guardian is great for trading and it grants you that extra bit of shield when dashing out with your E to soak some damage. This rune is important as you will be soaking a lot of damage with small trades in lane because laning phase is not your best time of the game. I would not recommend Grasp of the Undying in any scenario, however Aftershock can be in certain matchups where you are the only frontline for example.
This row has 3 good options. I find myself having the most succes playing with Font of Life. As Rakan you have some ways to proc Font of Life and when an ally procs it your Shurelya's Battlesong passive will also activate. Demolish is also a good option in melee matchups as you have a range advantage which makes it easier to push towers. The last rune in this row is Shield Bash. This rune can be extremely viable into melee matchups when playing around your passive shield.
Bone Plating is also one of 3 runes in its row that depends on your lane a lot. Bone Plating is overall just a solid rune when surviving lane, as champions such as Caitlyn and Seraphine are in the meta. If you are looking into a more teamfight/skirmish oriented rune Conditioning is a solid rune. Second Wind is great into heavy poke lanes, but I feel like it's not as strong as Bone Plating.
Unflinching is a great rune for Rakan as heavy CC supports are in the meta right now. Another great option is Revitalize. The extra healing and shielding helps you peel your ADC a lot better and provides more survivability in lane and teamfights. I would only recommend taking Overgrowth as Rakan in combination with aftershock as you will be acting as the main frontline for your team.
Runes - Domination
Domination
If you want to play AP Rakan I highly recommend using Electrocute, because you can easily proc it doing W>Q>Auto Attack and you can dash out again. Predator is the new hype since preseason 12. It gives you a lot of roaming potential since Predator received some buffs. Hail of Blades and Dark Harvest are a no go.
In this row I would advise Sudden Impact or Cheap Shot. Sudden Impact synergizes with your W and E and will increase your damage with the Electrocute combo (This is my personal preference). Cheap Shot, on the other side, does synergize with your W and R and will deal a lot of damage if you find a multi man engage. I do not recommend taking Taste of Blood.
In this row the best option you have is Zombie Ward. This rune will stack slower early game due to you not having an Oracle Lens early. Later into the game you will experience that denying vision helps you establish vision which leads you to have control over larger portions of the map. Another option in this row is Eyeball Collection. I recommend this rune if you love to play the roaming game and get your other lanes, and especially yourself ahead. The last option in this row is Ghost Poro. This also helps in creating vision, but this does not require you to kill enemy wards but place your own wards.
The bottom row of domination has a lot of viable options, but the one I prefer is Ultimate Hunter. This rune gives you more cooldown on your R - The Quickness which leaves you with more windows to create engages for you team or peel for you ADC. Relentless Hunter is also a good rune if you look for roaming early and get it stacking. This can result in quick flank setups in late game and provides more safety playing the vision game as you have more movement speed to work with. Ingenious Hunter also works well with Rakan. It lowers the cooldown of items and wards/ Oracle Lens which leads to more power in the vision game and more usage of your activatable items such as Shurelya's Battlesong and Redemption. I do not recommend using Ravenous Hunter as you won’t get the same value as from the other runes in this row.
Runes - Inspiration
Inspiration
Glacial Augment has been reworked in the preseason of season 12 and it has some good synergy with our boy Rakan. When using CC on an enemy you will shoot frost bolts around you which slow enemies and reduce their damage. This tool is pretty huge in teamfighting. Unsealed Spellbook is also a favourite of some Rakan players and is pretty fun if you know how to use it. First Strike is also new in season 12, but I do not recommend going for this keystone.
In this row you can opt into 2 choices. The first one being Perfect Timing because you will buy a Zhonya's Hourglass and as a support you don’t have a lot of gold, so a free 650 gold is pretty good. The other option that I like here is Magical Footwear. When playing into an easy matchup you can abuse, you can get your boots pretty fast and start snowballing the map more quickly. I do not recommend going Hextech Flashtraption. It can be an option if you are a master in using your hexflash, but this isn’t as valuable as the other 2.
This row has 3 valid options. I recommend taking Biscuit Delivery which will result in some sustain in laning phase. Laning phase can be difficult as Rakan so this is a pretty helpful tool. Minion Dematerializer can also be a good option when going into an adc that has difficulties with wave clearing. You can hard shove some waves early and get out of lane to impact other places of the map. The last option, Future's Market can be useful when trying to hit item spikes early. This can work when in a matchup you will always win so you can start snowballing earlier.
Cosmic Insight is the best option in this row as the item haste benefits your Zhonya's Hourglass and the summoner spell haste will lower the cooldown of your Flash which results in more playmaking potential. Approach Velocity is not worth it as you already dash in and cc your targets, so you don’t need the extra movement speed. Time Warp Tonic is also not ideal as you are not looking into buying a lot of potions.
Runes - Sorcery
Sorcery
You won't be using Sorcery as your primary rune tree, but if you do Summon Aery is the only viable keystone. Personally I get more value out of Resolve and Domination and think these two are better than Sorcery. Summon Aery does amplify your laning phase when you end up in a matchup that you can play out aggressively by trading with auto attacks and your Q without getting punished a lot (not a lot of matchups). Phase Rush and Arcane Comet are just not the right keystones for Rakan and I do not recommend these as you get more value out of other keystones.
Nimbus Cloak is considered the best rune in this row for Rakan. It gives more creative options to engage using your Flash and the extra movement speed can catch enemies of guard. A good option into AP heavy comps is Nullifying Orb as it gives an extra magic shield when getting low. I would not recommend going for Manaflow Band as you can’t stack it effectively if you play into a hard matchup where landing your Q can be punished by your opponents.
Transcendence is a good rune as Rakan does benefit from ability haste a lot. It gives you a lot more agency in peeling for your ADC or looking for engages/quick trades, it also scales good into the midgame where Rakan as a champion becomes more proactive in fights. The other good option is Celerity as it increases your roaming potential and your overall tempo in the game getting vision and setting up flanks. The rune I do not recommend here is Absolute Focus as you will not benefit from this as much as you will from the other options.
Gathering Storm is a good rune to scale into the late game, especially when running the Electrocute page. It gives the best flat stat running the Electrocute page and is highly recommended when running the AP Rakan build. When playing with Guardian you should consider running Waterwalking as it increases your strength around objectives and it speeds up your roaming quite a bit. I do not recommend Scorch as you are not considered a champion that pokes a lot.
Itemization - Starting items
To start of the item section, let's dive into the starting items. There are 4 different support starting items, but only 2 are favoured by Rakan.
Relic Shield Relic Shield is the item you take in almost all your games. It provides safety in lane and it scales with some good AP and Health when completing your support quest. You take Relic Shield over Steel Shoulderguards because of the AP you get from Relic Shield. This is the go to support item when in matchup you can’t punish or you get punished easily (Mostly poke mages and aggressive melee supports).
Spellthief's Edge Spellthief's Edge is the other support item you can consider taking. It gives more AP then Relic Shield but less Health. You take Spellthief's Edge over Spectral Sickle, because Spectral Sickle gives AD and you won’t benefit from this a lot. You can take Spellthief's Edge in matchups you can punish. Knowing the matchups you can punish comes from experience and I can’t foresee what matchups you do fancy playing into or where you feel like trading easily.
Itemization - Mythics
Since the beginning of season 11 Mythic items have become an important part of your build and bring some extra passive stats to the table. Therefor it’s very important to choose wisely and build around your goal for a certain game. I do recommend going for your mythic as your first core item (not including boots).
Shurelya's Battlesong
In most cases you want to play with Shurelya's Battlesong (when running the guardian page). It provides great utility to your team and it helps them following you into fights or disengaging fights. The extra damage bonus for your allies is also very helpful. The mythic passive provides ability haste from patch 11.8 onwards which will also help in peeling your carries better.
Everfrost Everfrost can also be a very good mythic choice for Rakan. Probs to MAD Lions' support Kaiser for bringing up this tech. Everfrost on Rakan is really good into short range comps and really fun in general for some extra damage and lockdown.
Hextech Rocketbelt Hextech Rocketbelt is the item choice that you want to go when playing AP Rakan (with Electrocute). The active gives you damage bolts shooting out and movement speed towards enemy champions which increases your backline threat. Furthermore it give magic penetration which is really helpful as your damage abilities all deal magic damage. The interesting of this item is that you also stack a lot of health when this is the only item you have finished besides your boots and support item.
Itemization - Boots
The following section will describe the viable boots options for Rakan. This is based on personal preference, so you can either swap between Mobility Boots and Boots of Swiftness based on your own preference.
Boots of Mobility Mobility Boots are a solid choice for boots when playing Rakan. Your out of combat movement speed will help you set up vision deep in the enemy jungle and threat the midlane with roams as you move faster across the river. Setting up flanks also get easier as you can get faster in place. I also only recommend going these if you have a feeling you can snowball other lanes if you have a lead.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity are the best way to go. They give you 20 Ability haste which equals approximately 17% Cooldown reduction when it’s your first 20 ability haste of the game. On a 10 second ability that means a reduction of 1.7 seconds which is huge early game.
Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps are the obvious choice versus a full AD comp. Also if the enemy composition has a lot of champions that are auto attack heavy (Vayne top, Kindred jungle and an ADC for example).
Mercury's Treads
If you are losing lane or the enemy team has a lot of CC, Mercury's Treads are the ideal boots for Rakan as they provide tenacity. Also a valid option when you are playing versus an AP heavy composition.
Sorcerer's Shoes Sorcerer's Shoes are a good option when playing AP Rakan when you are ahead. Otherwise look for one of the other options (except for Mobility Boots). The extra magic penetration can mean a lot of damage on to the enemy ADC early on in the game.
Itemization - General Items
The following section will describe the other items you might want to include into your build. These are my commonly used items and are the best in my opinion:
Zeke's Convergence Zeke's Convergence is one of the best items for Rakan. When peeling or engaging you tend to CC your enemies a lot which gives your linked ally extra damage while facing the threat. I do recommend this item while playing with hyper carries like Jinx, Twitch or Kai'Sa, because they make the most out of the item passive. This item is a really good choice as a second or third item in your build.
Staff of Flowing Water Staff of Flowing Water is a strong item on Rakan as it does increase your healing and shielding. This item makes your peeling a lot better and it provides more safety for your team. The passive of this item makes you an engaging threat as well because you can shield a frontline tank and run in together with the extra movement speed this item provides. This items is a good choice as a second, third or fourth item in your build.
Redemption Redemption is a solid item in your build as it will help out during teamfights or during the time in between teamfights. It increases your healing and shielding by 20% which is a pretty good amount. The active heals your allies and damages your enemies for a small amount which can turn the tides of battle in your favour by keeping your key carries alive. I recommend going this item later into the game, around your fourth or fifth item.
Ardent Censer Ardent Censer is a good item when playing alongside a hyper carry ( Jinx, Twitch, Kai'Sa, etc.). It boosts their auto attack damage with some extra on-hit magic damage and it boosts your heals and shields quite a bit. The item passive only works on heals and shields, but luckily your E has two charges in a certain timespan and both charges do proc the item passive. Don’t spam your E twice on the same carry because the item passive does reset to quick and the shields don’t stack. I recommend going this item as a third, fourth or fifth item.
Mikael's Blessing Mikael's Blessing is a matchup dependant item. If the enemy team has tons, and I mean TONS of CC, you really want to get this item to buy some space for your team. It removes CC and allows your team member to reposition and continue the fight, or let’s them disengage when they got chunked out for a huge amount. Look to buy this item when you think you need it, because there is no certain timing.
Anathema's Chains Anathema's Chains can be really strong on Rakan. If the only AD or AP damage threat on the enemy team get fed Anathema's Chains is really viable. The tankiness and ability haste are really beneficial. Also the tenacity reduction on the fed enemy carry can come in handy.
Vigilant Wardstone
The newest warding item of season 11, the Vigilant Wardstone. The struggle of being full build and not being able to buy control wards is gone as this item gives you great stats, especially for Rakan, and it gives you bonusses towards warding. The 40 ability haste when fully upgraded is a lot. Also the extra movement speed helps when warding. I recommend going for this item when you are full build and can afford to sell your boots as it will only be available around level 13 and you won’t get this far in most of the games as games tend to last around 30-35 minutes in this meta.
Demonic Embrace Demonic Embrace is an item that is used in the AP build to finish of your build. It provides Health and some burn damage. When engaging you do proc the item passive which applies the burn, but when applying this you also receive Armour and Magic Resistance for every enemy you applied the burn too. This makes it a solid choice in the AP build as it also provides some survivability when engaging and diving for the enemy backline. This item comes in as fifth or sixth in your build.
Mejai's Soulstealer
When you are ahead and start snowballing you can choose to build a Mejai's Soulstealer because your abilities have a good AP scaling. This item makes you a real backline threat when ahead, but you have to be careful when diving in because when you get locked down and blown up, you can say goodbye to your stacks. I only recommend building this item when you are ahead and you feel like you can steamroll your game.
Rabadon's Deathcap
The only time you want to go Rabadon's Deathcap is when you are full build and you can afford to sell your boots. This is the only reason why you would want to build it, but I find myself almost never buy it. I recommend going for Rabadon’s Deathcap when you feel like you can sell your boots when full build and you can afford it.
Force of nature Force of Nature is your go to item when facing off against an AP heavy comp. It gives some Health and Magic Resistance, but the item passive is the real reason why you would build this item. The extra movement speed you get when cc'ed or hit by ap damage makes it easier to engage or disengage and makes you a real threat in teamfights.
Zhonya's Hourglass Zhonya's Hourglass is a good option to build on Rakan for multiple reasons. When you look to go the AP build and the enemy is full AD you already have some Armour stacked and receive less damage when diving in. Another good reason to build Zhonya’s is that you can buy a lot of time when diving in and they immediately turn all their forces onto you. In this small window of stasis your team has the time to close the gap to you and you can get out of the fight with your E. I recommend going Zhonya’s when you feel like you need it.
Banshee's Veil Banshee's Veil offers some safety when engaging, because the first ability that hits you won’t interrupt your engage and you can continue your way into the backline. It also gives you the ability to catch a hook for one of your carries when some gets caught off guard and you can use your E to catch the hook. All round a great option when fighting into AP heavy comps too. I recommend to only build Banshee’s Veil when you feel like you need it.
Chemtech Putrifier Chemtech Putrifier is the go to anti-heal option for Rakan. I favor this item over Morellonomicon as Rakan does benefit more from the antiheal on the shielding then from the AP. Definitely look to build this early as it gives some ability haste aswell.
Matchups

Alistar shouldn’t be the hardest of matchups as he is eager to engage on you. Play around his W Q combo cooldown and you should be fine. Don’t dive too deep behind him as he can bump you into the tower.
Hard

Amumu’s early aggression can be a real struggle in lane. Try to play safe in the early levels as he has some great all in potential at lvl 1 and 2.
Hard

Imperial mandate Ashe is a pain in the Ashe with her constant slows and her R that can stun you in place which makes engaging a lot harder. She will try to run you down in lane if she has the opportunity. Try to avoid getting poked down and maybe buy boots of swiftness to reduce the slow.
Hard

Bard is a champion that is pretty difficult to play against. You can’t keep up with his roaming potential so try to make plays in lane if he is missing. Also play around his Q and carefully place your W so he can’t immediately stun you after you go in.
Very Easy

Blitzcrank is one of the easiest matchups for you. If he pulls in your ADC, you follow with your E. If he pulls you in, you can decide to dash out with your E or look for an engage with your W and R. Play around Blitzcranks Q and his R and you shouldn’t face too many problems.
Very Hard

Brand is a matchup that I call a big yikes. The champion is obnoxious to play against and deals tons of damage. In this lane you have to avoid his W and play around his passive, otherwise it’s doomed.
Easy

Braum is not a difficult matchup. Try to play around his passive and identify how aggressive the Braum actually is. If he is really aggressive play a with a little care and you will be fine. His ult can stop your engage so be careful for that.
Hard

Fiddlesticks is annoying to play against as he claims bush control and won’t let go. He is constantly looking to fear you which interrupts your mobility and makes you vulnerable for the enemy ADC. It’s important to establish good vision versus a fiddlesticks to avoid getting feared, ulted out of vision or ganked. Fiddlestick will have the upper hand in the vision wars as his passive Scarecrow Effigy is really strong for this.

Galio is a matchup that can go both ways. He either CC’s you to death or you dodge around his E and blow him up afterwards.

Gragas shouldn’t be the hardest matchup. If you play around his E you won’t find any difficulty dealing with him.

Janna can be annoying as she pokes a lot with her W in lane and she can avoid your engages by using her Q or R at the right time. If you are very patient in this matchup you should be fine.

Karma is a hard lane as she offers a lot of utility and damage. Avoid her R + Q and you should be fine. If you play around this the lane is winnable.

Leona is one of those hard engage supports that create some difficulties in laning phase. Play around her E and R and be very patient in lane, because you will outshine her in teamfights if you play it correctly.

The moonstone meta does favour Lulu a lot and her sustain and buffing for her ADC is annoying. Her W and R can interrupt your engage but once on top of Lulu she can’t do much.

Lux is not as annoying as the other mages in the botlane as she is easy to play around if she misses her Q. The only problem is when you get hit by her full combo and your HP bar is deleted.

Maokai is annoying as he gets on top of you easily and he can CC you long enough with his W and Q to avoid you from dashing or running away from him. Also have to be careful on face checking bushes as the sampling brigade is waiting to blow up in your face.

Morgana is the worst matchup you can get. Her Q roots you for a long time, her E mitigates your engages and she deals tons of damage. I permaban this champion.
Moderate

Nami is another enchanter with some disengage built into her kit to make your life difficult. Her E is slowing you and her Q stuns you for a second or so. Her ult is the perfect tool to stop you from engaging on her team so definitely try to dance around this.

Pantheon is a champion that can one shot either you or your ADC and is considered a hard matchup. Try to stay out of his W range, and if he jumps on your ADC try to W him immediately.

Poppy is niche support pocket pick that is really bad to play against. Her W cancels your W and E so when you dash in you can’t get out, which will result in you dying. She will also ult you away if you do find a window to engage. Poppy is not worth banning but do consider dodging if the enemy plays poppy support.

Pyke is an easy matchup as you can match his mobility. Same as for Blitzcrank, if your ADC gets pulled in follow him and look for a counter engage.

Rell is a champion that can make you stop moving. Play around her W and try to punish her if possible, but she will have the better time during laning phase. Her ult is also annoying if you try to engage.

Senna, especially fasting Senna or Senna with glacial augment, is a really bad matchup as she outranges you by a mile and deals tons of damage. Also her W is really annoying in lane as it is pretty hard cc.

Seraphine is a poke heavy champ and as we know that’s annoying if you are short range or melee. Seraphine can poke from miles away with her Q and E and has some good sustain with her W. If she misses the root on her passive empowered E or her ult you can all in her. Play around her passive and her ult.

Sett in not a hard matchup. If you stay at a distance so he can’t use his E, the Sett support pick is pretty useless. When you engage you have to be careful of his R that he does not one-shot your team with you as his victim.

Shaco’s boxes can be annoying in laning phase, but in teamfights he does not have a lot to offer. Play around him going invisible and punish him outside of his comfort zone, which are his boxes.

Sona is an annoying poke champion but laning against her should be fine as she has no CC. Play around her ability cooldowns and care for her ult. If you do this you should win lane 9/10 times.

I consider Soraka one of the most easy matchups as she does not have a lot to offer. If you dodge her Q she is pretty useless. The only thing that can interrupt your engage is her E.

Vex is good against dashing champs, as her passive allows to deal bonus damage to them. Our boy Rakan doesn't do anything but dashing in and out of fights, so Vex is really likely to win every trade. Also the high burst in her kit is really annoying, which leads to a lot of lane pressure.

Patch 12.5 doesn't bring any changes to support or the items we are building, so nothing changes for this patch. There were rumors for a Rakan skin in a few patches so maybe we see a small buff then. We also passed the 1 year anniversary of the guide! Thank you all for reading!

Today I added the build path for Everfrost after I noticed Mad Lions support Kaiser was playing it and I tested it myself. Furthermore I removed Evenshroud as I thought it didn't really hit the mark on Rakan. Lastly I also added the matchup information for Renata Glasc in the matchup section.
17/02/2022

Patch 12.4 brings a new support to the rift: Renata Glasc. I have added her to the matchups part without any information on the matchup yet. Will update the guide in the future if I played a fair amount of matches against her.

With patch 12.3 comes a lot of nerfs to annoying champions for Rakan. Not much changes as neither the items or Rakan himself find a change.
Nothing changed for Rakan's runes or builds this patch!
27/11/2021

After some more testing I find Evenshroud the better mythic for Rakan, so I updated the recommended build.
22/11/2021

After some more testing I added a runepage with Glacial Augment and a build with it. Also added the Amumu matchup in the matchup section and I added the Inspiration tree in the runes section.

I have started testing in preseason with Predator and Glacial Augment, I have added my page for predator as I find a lot of succes with this page. In the item section I added Evenshroud and Force of Nature and I removed Abyssal Mask, Locket of the Iron Solari and Cosmic Drive as they have changed or there is a better alternative. In the rune section I also removed the precision tree as there are more valuable rune pages without precision in it.

Updated the guide by adding Anathema's Chains in the item section and adding Vex in the matchup chapter. Also changed the icon of Chemtech putrifier in the item section from Morellonomicon to Chemtech Putrifier.

Again nog real changes for Rakan, let's wait for the preseason patch so we can start experimenting with new builds.
22/10/2021

Guardian got a nerf, but this will not affect anything as this is the only viable keystone choice on Rakan. In preseason we will have to keep an eye out on the changes to glacial augment and the new mythic items!

-
It's worlds time baby! Sadly still no changes to Rakan as he seems to be doing quiet well in high elo/pro play.

Updated the rune choice from demolish back to font of life.
04/09/2021
-
Updated the item section and removed some items.

Updated the guide for patch 11.17. Rakan has gone for more than a year without changes at the moment, so again nothing changed. Xayah got buffed which means you maybe find her more often in your soloq games so definetly look to try and play xayah rakan when possible!

-
Updated the build for AP Rakan as I've been experimenting and asking around on the Rakan mains reddit.
12/08/2021
-
Updated the guide for patch 11.16. There were some botlane nerfs regarding Lulu and Ziggs but, which will make playing these matchups easier. There are no direct changes to items or Rakan so nothing else changes. I did change one option in the resolve tree switching out font of life for demolish and rewriting the text.
21/07/2021

Updated the guide for patch 11.15. Nothing much changed as there are no direct changes to either Rakan or his items. Xayah did get buffs so you might see her more often.

Removed a mistake in the build section. Now the build is up-to-date.
08/07/2021
-
Updated the guide for patch 11.14. Nothing changed affecting Rakan. So have fun this patch!
23/06/2021
-
Updated the guide for patch 11.13. The mobility changes hit the rift, including a shurelya's nerf. This will not change much for Rakan as it is still the best mythic for him. Rakan might even rise in priority because he already has a lot of mobility built into his kit.
12/06/2021
-
Updated the items section. Added morellonomicon and removed chemtech putrifier. Furthermore added dark seal to the early items and spellthiefs on the starting items. I think the meta will shift to tank meta, so adapting to a more agressive playstyle will benefit you the next patches.
