Hi there!
This is my second build here on Mobafire, and I decided to put this up here in its infant stages so I will be updating this guide often.
Please don't downvote this build if you don't own your very first game using it. Orianna's mechanics can be very hard to get used to. Also please don't bash/downvote based on opinion without trying the build, please and thank you.
I welcome your constructive comments and input!
Thanks for reading!
I put several options above for runes that work well on her depending on your preference and playstyle.
Marks:
Greater Mark of Magic Penetration for the magic penetration
Seals:
Greater Seal of Scaling Mana Regeneration is great because I don't have any manna trouble with her using these seals. I haven't really tried others.
Glyphs:
Greater Glyph of Scaling Ability Power are great for the straight AP or
Greater Glyph of Scaling Cooldown Reduction if you want better cooldown reduction.
Both are good, but use what's best for you!
Quints:
Quintessence of Ability Power for more straight AP or
Quintessence of Movement Speed for getting in and out of battle alive.

The summorer spells I've scose are
Ghost for the obvious reason that Orianna needs a way to escape sticky situations, and
Ignite to help you to clean up kills.
Another one that's really good for her with this build is
Clarity, especially if you don't use
Greater Seal of Scaling Mana Regeneration, or if you just want to be able to spam your spells more and stay in lane a little longer. If you choose to use clarity, I would switch it with ignite.
As most of you know, depending on your preference you can also get
Flash instead of ghost.

the masteries I choose for her is 9/0/21 as shown above.
I focus on cooldown reduction, ap and xp and the rest is just gravy.
I have a point in haste to make my
Ghost better, but if you choose different summoner spells than me, don't forget to change this to put that point elsewhere.

I have a lot of options here.
1. I start off with a
Ruby Crystal. I've found that this offers the best survivability for her early game, and it builds into Catalyst the protector in your first trip back. You can also start off with a
Sapphire Crystal and
Health Potions if you want to, but for me, the
Ruby Crystal work the best.
- IF you don't have
Greater Seal of Scaling Mana Regeneration, you may want to start with a
Sapphire Crystal and go with a
Tear of the Goddess instead of a Catalyst, but I find it much better going with catalyst, personally
2. First trip back you should buy Catalyst the Protector and
Boots if possible.
3. Complete your boots: I usually get
Ionian Boots of Lucidity, but I sometimes also get
Sorcerer's Shoes depending on preference and my team composition
4.
Blasting Wand, then
Rod of Ages. This item is great for more survivability, plus ap and mana.
5. Next I get
Sheen. IF you find yourself casting and running a lot and being careful to stay out of the action, then you may want to wait til late game or not get this at all.
6. If you are using her passive/auto attack a lot, you can get either
Malady here, or a
Hextech Gunblade. these add some good old ap along with some attack speed. If you are taking a more careful roll don't buy this as it will be wasted.
If you're having trouble with a certain FED caster (
Veigar,
Katarina) or melee DPS (
Master Yi), Take an
Force of Nature or a
Thornmail here next.
NOTE: I am still experimenting with these items and I'm not sure which one i like better, but I'm leaning towards the Hextech gynblade
7.
Rabadon's Deathcap next for straight AP
8. Next I build sheen into a Litch bane. If you didn't grab a
Sheen, get an
Abyssal Mask next for some good magic resistance and more AP.
9.
Rylai's Crystal Scepter is next, for more AP, health, and a slow which WINS LATE GAME TEAMFIGHTS ALL THE TIME ^_^.
10. Another great option for an item if you don't like one of the ones above is
Void Staff. You can switch this out with anything in the build you find less useful.
Have I tried a
Mejai's Soulstealer? The answer is yes. What I found, is that she can definitely stack one of these, but it can be risky, so I didn't add it to the build. However, it is a viable option once you know you can play
Orianna well.

I get a point in each of her skills at levels 1, 2, 3 starting with Q
Command: Attack, then W
Command: Dissonance, then E
Command: Protect.
Then I max out her skills in that same order, getting a point in her ulimate,
Command: Shockwave when I can.
pretty simple and it works well.

pretty simple and it works well.
Early Game:
Orianna is a great harasser. As you start with a
Ruby Crystal first, you will be able to stay in lane for a while, but be careful not to over-commit or be overconfident.
starting at level 2, you can harass with Q-W for some decent damage. just don't waste your W though, because usually people see the ball coming and run. only use W if they are still close enough to the ball for the attack to hit them.
It is very easy for Orianna to farm with
Command: Attack, but it's also the only way to have mid game manna issues with her. Farm her up and get lots of gold before you recall, but try to do it by last hitting and save your Command: attack for harassing enemies.
If you see a kill in sight, use Q-W for the damage/slow, then hit them with your
Ignite and
Ghost if you need to to auto attack them down. Make sure to coordinate with your lane partner, as Orianna can have a hard time getting one on one kills early game.
By level 6 you should have a Catalyst and boots of speed, but if you don't, don't sweat it, as Orianna is the best farmer I've ever played.
Mid game:
Orianna is a pretty good ganker, so try to make the most of this. as soon as you've completed your level 2 boots, gank if the opportunity arises. using the method i gave above. if your summoner spells aren't available you can still try, just don't get into situations you can't handle.
Don't forget to use her
Command: Protect ability to save yourself or teammates! this can turn the tides of a game!
Best way to use it in teamfights, is to use it to protect the tank, then once the shield wears off then use your other abilities as the enimies are usually gathered around and they've generally exhausted some of their spells. This will keep you back from the front lines also (thanks Lieken for the tip).
Another great way to use it is when laning with a Melee DPS, coordinate with them when to go in for a kill and put
Command: Protect on them BEFORE they jump in. What this allows you to do is have your lane partner carry the ball close to the enemy, then you use all your damage spells. Fantastic strategy suggested by Zimit.
Late game:
When in team fights DON"T GO IN FIRST! Go in once at least one of your teammates are already engaged, and use your full combo: Q-R-W. use R before W because R gets them all closer to the ball!
Orianna does AWESOME AOE damage in teamfights. You will do well as long as you don't get overconfident and get into situations that you can't handle.
If you do get in a sticky situation and you're surrounded by enemies, use
Command: Shockwave first, followed by
Command: Protect and
Command: Dissonance (R-E-W) to toss enemies up in the air, protect yourself, and slow your enemies and hopefully get away. Use ghost if you have to.
Don't run around by yourself too much, try to stay with teammates. Orianna is good at escaping surprise attacks in the jungle, but don't be reckless.

Running away:
1. Shield yourself first (E)
2. Hit W to slow whoever is chasing you.
3. Once your cooldowns are finished, repeat until you're at your turret.
4. Ghost if you have to.
I've almost never gotten caught this way, and I've saved teammates numerous times using this on them!

Here I will outline some more defensive options that I tried out tonight, in one of the most difficult games I've played as Orianna.
Solo queue.... just shoot me, right? The enemy team comp was
Dr. Mundo,
Malphite,
Mordekaiser,
Trundle and
Katarina. Our team was me,
Karma,
Ashe,
Dr. Mundo and
Evelynn. I went mid VS Katarina. I was fairly confident, as I had never had trouble laning against any one particular character before. By the time I was 0/3 I asked for a lane switch! I could not handle katarina, and I'll tell you why. She leveled up her bouncing blades ASAP to counter my range, and allowed her to outrange me by using my minions to bounce the attack towards me. Then she hit level 6 and that was it. there was no stopping her. I asked for a lane switch.
TIP: don't mid vs Katarina, she doesn't play nice.
Once I switched lanes, I was against malphite and Mord. another nightmare, couldn't get kills, could only defend and stay alive. Kat was ganking, got fed and had a score of 7/0/2. At this point we thought the game was over.
I got my Rod of Ages and Ionian Boots, VERY slowly I might add, because I couldn't farm properly while playing under my turret. As Kat was ripping me down fast with her ult with no way around it, I decided to get a Force of Nature, the best magic resistance item in the game.
We had words about the team needing to focus Kat. I find this is the best situation when losing games in solo queue is to tell the team who to focus first, second, etc.
Next, I got my Rabadon's deathcap as usual. Can't live without it. The tides started to turn and we began winning teamfights. I was STAYING BACK so as not to get focused.
Soon after, I realized that the force of nature alone wasn't cutting it. I decided to go with an Abyssal Scepter next, that way I wasn't sacrificing damage for MR, I'd get both.
This is where the tides really started turning. Kat couldn't kill any of us with her ult alone anymore (despite her three Rabadon's deathcaps and two Hextech gunblades) except for Ashe (who had no magic resistance), so she became easy to focus.
Last, I got a guardian angel, just to make sure she would not be able to turn it around on us. In the end, we won hands down, despite Katarina's 31 kills. The game lasted 1 hour and 8 minutes. My score was 10/8/19 which isn't bad considering I started the game off with 3 deaths. I dealt the second most damage in the game (after Kat), 341,802 (which is also the most I have dealt in any game ever), and I killed 352 minions (also the most I've ever killed).
In the end of game chat, their Maphite said 'best orianna I've seen so far'. And I had never used that build before!
THE MORAL OF THE STORY:
Games can be completely turned around by changing your build. Don't just use the items I say I use, because every game is different, and sometimes you'll lane against someone that seems impossible to beat. Don't give up! when they kill you, look at what kind of damage they're doing, and build against it. (magic resistance, thornmail, etc.)
