Prologue

LORE

Morgana is the twin sister of Kayle. The sisters were raised on Mount Targon, but their father was concerned that their mother would become the Aspect of Justice - so he took the sisters away with him. Their father would then become the founder of Demacia - a kingdom that would be free from the terrible powers of magic and "persecution".
One day, a sword literally fell from the heavens and split in half - one half for Kayle, the other half for Morgana. Their father was devastated and Morgana tried to comfort him, but Kayle was totally into the idea of being an angel of jusice. Together, the sisters worked together to defend Demacia as their Winged Protectors.
The sisters started to become distant due to Kayle's increasingly extreme behaviour. After Morgana killed one of Kayle's most loyal followers, who tried to kill her, Kayle and Morgana clashed in an epic fight. Unfortunately, their father got killed in the crossfire, and this absolutely devastated Morgana. Morgana personally renounced her divinity, tethering her own wings with chains. She now walks among mortals, feeling betrayed by her sister - and preparing for the day they may fight each other once again.
TL;DR - A Summarized Version of My Guide
Abilities

Morgana - The Fallen Angel
Ranged, Mage, Support

Damage Focus: Ability Power
Recommended Role: Support
Viability: A+

Morgana is the twin sister of Kayle. After a heated battle between herself and her sister resulted in the death of their father, she tethered her own wings and chose to walk among mortals. In game, she is a powerful caster that can be played as either a mid-laner or a support. This guide aims to focus on her role as a Support. Max Dark Binding first to increase its damage and root duration. You'll typically want to max Black Shield second to reduce its cooldown and improve its power. Finally, you'll want to max Tormented Shadow last.
An Explanation of Morgana's Abilities
Passive Ability
Soul Siphon: When Morgana damages enemy heroes, jungle creeps, cannon minions, and super minions with her spells, she heals for 20% of the damage dealt.
  • This is Morgana's main means of sustaining herself in lane. Poke enemies using Dark Binding or Tormented Shadow to recover HP lost from trades whenever possible.
Q
Dark Binding: A long-range skillshot that roots the first enemy it hits for 2/2.25/2.5/2.75/3 seconds and deals 80/135/190/245/300 (+90% of Morgana's AP) magical damage.
  • You want to max this ability first. Maxing this ability first will allow you to root enemies longer and increases the amount of damage it deals.
  • In the early game, use Dark Binding to harass enemies in your lane from a distance.
  • To land hits with this ability more often, try aiming at your enemies' feet. The hitboxes in MOBAs are generally located near their feet.
W
Tormented Shadow: A damage-dealing Area-of-Effect (AoE) spell that lasts for 5 seconds. It deals 8/16/24/32/40 (+11% of Morgana's AP) magical damage to enemies standing in this AoE. The damage is increases based on how much HP said enemies are missing (up to 50%; 12/24/36/48/60). Every time Soul Siphon triggers, the cooldown of Tormented Earth is accelerated.
E
Black Shield: A 5-second long shield that can be used on one of Morgana's teammates or herself. The shield will block 70/140/210/280/320 (+70% of Morgana's AP) magical damage and will make the user immune to the effects of enemy spells - especially crowd control.
Ultimate Ability
Soul Shackles: Morgana shackles all enemy heroes standing within 1,050 units from her, dealing 150/225/300 (+70% of Morgana's AP) magic damage to each shackled enemy, grants Morgana and her team True Sight of shackled enemies, slowing shackled enemies by 20%. Any shackled enemy that doesn't gtfo within 3 seconds will take damage again and will be stunned for 1.5 seconds. Morgana moves 5%/30%/55% faster towards shackled enemies.
Morgana's Gameplay - Early Game
In the laning phase, Morgana should be bullying her lane opponents by using Dark Binding and Tormented Shadow.

Ability Usage

  • As stated in my ability build shown near the top of this guide, you want to put a point into Dark Binding at level 1 and max it first by level 9.
  • Dark Binding is going to be your main means of bullying your enemies in lane due to its high damage.
  • Because of Dark Binding's slow travel time, it can be difficult to land a hit on your intended target from farther away.
  • If possible, hide in the brush so you can get closer to your intended target, making it easier to hit them with Dark Binding.
  • Most importantly, you should practice predicting the movements of your enemies whenever possible. Doing so can drastically improve your effectiveness when playing as Morgana. Landing more Dark Bindings means dealing more damage, giving your allies more opportunities to kill enemies, and completing your gold quest for Spellthief's Edge faster.
  • Don't forget that lane creeps can easily block Dark Binding if you're not careful.
  • Don't get this at level 1. It can help you proc Manaflow Band and Spellthief's Edge easily, but it costs much more mana than Dark Binding and will deal a lot less damage without any movement-impairing follow-ups from Dark Binding, your items, or your allies. Save this for Level 3 or Level 4. Once you get it, use it mostly as a means of proccing Spellthief's Edge and Manaflow Band.
  • Morgana can use Tormented Shadow more liberally once she upgrades Spellthief's Edge into Frostfang thanks to its mana regeneration bonus.]
  • When using Tormented Shadow to harass your lane opponents in the early game, never put it down on top of low health lane creeps. You could potentially kill them, activating Spellthief's Edge's gold income penalty.
  • Get a point in Black Shield once you hit Level 2. No exceptions.
  • Black Shield should be used sparingly due to its long cooldown. Do not use it on yourself unless absolutely necessary.
  • Use Black Shield on your ADC lane partner whenever he/she is about to get hit by some form of crowd control and/or magic damage harassment, such as Blitzcrank's Rocket Grab, Nami's Aqua Prison, or Vayne's Condemn. If you're fast enough, you can potentially save your partner's butt.
  • Since you only move 5% faster towards enemies shackled by your ultimate ability until level 11, and due to its very long cooldown, save Soul Shackles for special occasions.
  • One example of such a special occasion would be if your lane opponents and/or the enemy jungler tries to tower dive on your lane partner. Doing this indirectly tells them that they have three choices:
    • Burn their Flash in order to get out of Soul Shackles' aoe,
    • attack you instead of your lane partner in an effort to stop your ult,
    • or try to ignore you and try to kill your lane partner before your ult stuns them under your tower.
  • If the enemy team attacks you to try to cancel your ult before they get stunned, use your Stopwatch from Perfect Timing once they try to get closer to you. By that time, it'll be too late for them to run away, potentially forcing them to burn a Flash.
Morgana's Gameplay - Mid Game
Morgana's presence in the mid game and onwards isn't greatly affected by how well she did in the laning phase of the game. I'm not saying that your team isn't gonna suffer if you died a lot during the early game - I'm saying that you're not very gold-reliant as a Support.
  • Stick with your teammates whenever possible. Thanks to Frostfang and Remnant of the Watchers, you'll always get a decent amount of gold whenever you damage enemy heroes in the presence of your allies.

Ability Usage

  • From the mid-game and onward, Dark Binding is your means of locking down high-priority enemies and for counter-engaging. Is the enemy's ADC stepping out of line? Hit 'em with a Dark Binding to set up for an easy kill for your team.
  • Use Tormented Shadow to chip away at enemies' health or to help your allies clear lane creep waves and jungle camps faster.
  • In the mid-game, you can use Black Shield more liberally, as you've [hopefully] upgraded it to increase its power and reduce its cooldown.
  • Use Black Shield on allies who start fights to give them a significant advantage over enemies - immunity to crowd control.
  • You typically don't have to use Black Shield on yourself, but if you do - it's typically to help give you extra protection when Zhonya's Hourglass is cooling down.
  • With Zhonya's Hourglass, Morgana can serve as a bit of an initiator for her team.
    • When initiating, wait for the enemy team to walk towards your team first, if possible.
    • If necessary, use Black Shield to make sure no one on the enemy team can use crowd control to keep you from activating your Hourglass.
    • Don't activate Zhonya's Hourglass until you're close enough to enemies that they can't flee without using Flash or until they start trying to focus their damage onto you. Try to get as close as possible to ensure you'll stun them.

Working with Your Team

  • As a Support, it's better to play with a party than to play solo.
    • In a party, you can use the game's voice chat feature to very easily communicate with your team. The voice chat completely removes the need to type and reduces the need to use pings.
  • Communication is key for any team! Communicate with your team as much as possible to the best of your ability.
    • Use pings often. It'll save you time from typing.
    • If you're in a party, use the game's voice chat feature!
Morgana's Gameplay - Late Game
Unless you've gotten a lot of AP from runes or items, the late game is where Morgana has the most amount of trouble. By this point in the game, she can be easily burst down by the enemy team's damage dealers.
  • To avoid putting yourself in deadly situtations - never go alone, always stick with your team.
  • If the enemy team tries to focus you during teamfights, activate Soul Shackles and Zhonya's Hourglass immediately. It can mean the difference between life and death. Your Soul Shackles will force the enemy team to back away or else get stunned, and Zhonya's Hourglass will keep them from killing you before you can stun them.
  • Because the enemy team's damage dealers can easily burst you down while Zhonya's Hourglass is cooling down, try and hide in the backline, using Dark Binding to punish enemies who step out of line or get too close to you and your team.
  • By now, your runes and items together should make the cooldown of Black Shield short enough to be liberally used on just about any ally that's in a fight. Summon Aery will strengthen the shield to also block some physical damage.
  • Feel free to spam Tormented Shadow in teamfights or to clear lane creep waves, as you should have enough mana and mana regen to make up for its expensive mana cost.
Morgana's Pros and Cons
Pros Cons
Black Shield makes allies immune to crowd control. Black Shield has a long cooldown and does not mitigate physical damage.
Morgana's abilities have high AP ratios, allowing her to scale well into the late game. Burns through mana very quickly in the early game.
Dark Binding is a very powerful root that deals lots of damage. Dark Binding requires good aim to make the most of its damage and crowd control.
Soul Shackles is one of the strongest ultimate abilities in the game. It deals a large amount of damage, has a high AP ratio, and stuns enemies. Soul Shackles requires Morgana to get close to enemies for it to be effective. Not being a tank, she'll be vulnerable to enemy retaliation if she tries to initiate.
Tormented Shadow can be used to easily proc Spellthief's Edge and/or Manaflow Band. The damage from Tormented Shadow can only be properly utilized alongside items or abilities that impair an enemy's movement. Two examples include Rylai's Crystal Scepter and Dark Binding. Otherwise, your enemies can easily walk out of its AoE before taking significant damage.
A List of Morgana's Viable Runes
Aery is easily one of the best runes you can pick for Morgana. It'll make her spells deal more damage and it'll allow her Black Shield to block more damage.
Arcane Comet is a viable substitute thanks to its damage. It won't empower your Black Shield like Aery will, however.
Morgana can easily deplete her mana pool in the early game. The Manaflow Band easily compensates for this by increasing the size of your mana pool every time you land a hit with Dark Binding or Tormented Shadow on an enemy hero. After landing 10 of your spells, you permanently restore a portion of your lost mana in short time intervals.
Mobility is very important for any Support hero - Morgana included. Celerity will increase the effectiveness of all movement speed enhancements by 10% - including the movement speed bonus provided by Soul Shackles. Transcendence is a viable alternative, however, as many of the items you'd want to buy as Morgana give you CDR - such as the Frozen Heart and Zeke's Convergence.
Mobility is very important for any Support. Waterwalking grants exactly that, along with some extra AP, whenever Morgana is walking on the river that splits the map in half.
Seeing as how important Zhonya's Hourglass is for Morgana's kit, taking this rune should be mandatory, as far as I'm concerned. It saves you 600 gold by giving you a Stopwatch at the beginning of the game, but it can't be used until ten minutes into the game. You can only use your Stopwatch once, so don't use it unless absolutely necessary!
Morgana benefits greatly from Approach Velocity. She'll move faster towards allies who are being CC'd, as well as move faster towards enemies she CC's with Dark Binding or Soul Shackles. This mobility can allow her to very easily chase fleeing foes or quickly come to a troubled ally's aid.
A Detailed List of Morgana's Viable Items

Starting Items

You'll get this at the start of the game thanks to your Perfect Timing rune. You need this in order to get Zhonya's Hourglass at an affordable price. Unlike the Hourglass, you can only use your Stopwatch once - and this one won't be activatable until ten minutes into the game. Use it wisely and don't sell it.
Spellthief will improve Morgana's casting capabilities and also rewards her with gold for aggressively damaging enemy heroes with her spells and basic attacks. Upgrade this to Frostfang as quickly as possible to complete your gold quest quickly!
It's never a bad idea to spend some spare gold on health potions.
Buying an Oracle Lens allows you to control the enemy team's vision. Whenever you suspect the enemy team has planted wards nearby, just activate the Oracle lens to reveal them. You and your allies will all benefit from the gold from destroying wards.

Early Game Core Items

You want to buy this ASAP. Its stats and additional gold rewarded from damaging enemy heroes is too good to pass up. Not to mention, you can't finish your gold quest without upgrading Spellthief's Edge!
Everyone needs footwear. 'Nuff said.
Now that you have your Frostfang and your Boots, it's time to start building your Zhonya's Hourglass (pun intended). You want to start off with a Fiendish Codex. It'll give you some AP and CDR, and CDR is always important for any Support.

Core Items

Zhonya's Hourglass will give you everything Morgana needs - CDR, AP, and some extra resilience by giving her some Armor. There are so many potential uses for Zhonya's Hourglass that I'm considering making a guide solely for this item. One particular use for the Hourglass that should come to mind is when you charge towards the enemy team to initiate with Soul Shackles, then dodge their attempts to focus you by activating the hourglass. Of course, that's not it's only use - and its long cooldown (even with the reduced cooldown provided by Perfect Timing) means you can't use it recklessly.
The Ionian Boots of Lucidity allow you to use your spells more often, including your Summoner Spells like Exhaust. They're especially useful if you chose to use the Transcendence rune.
Upgrading Frostfang into this will give you some more HP and AP, but the stat improvements are so meager that you can get away with sometimes skipping this item entirely. I wouldn't recommend making a habit out of it though. A little extra HP can go a long way.

Footwear

The default pair of boots for Morgana, the Boots of Mobility offer the most movement speed in the game outside of combat - making it a great choice for many Supports.
A viable substitute for the Mobility Boots when up against enemies like Ashe, the Boots of Swiftness reduce the power of enemy slow effects.
For those days when the enemy team is building lots of Magic Resistance.

Support Items

If facing against a team with heavy crowd control, it's not a bad idea to get Mikael's Crucible due to Black Shield's long cooldown.
A strong support item overall, Redemption is a near-global AoE heal for your team, and near-global AoE damage for the enemy team. It goes great alongside Mikael's Blessing thanks to Harmony.
The Ancient Coin family of items is a suitable substitute for the Spellthief's Edge line of items. It gives Morgana additional movement speed and allows her to collect gold in a more passive manner.
Twin Shadows provides AP and movement speed. It can help provide vision for your team or chase fleeing foes.

Offensive Items

The Morellonomicon will allow Morgana's spells to inflict the Grievous Wounds debuff - reducing the effectiveness of all healing for the enemy team. Don't buy this if someone else already has.
A powerful item for just about any mage, hands down.
Buying the Crystal Scepter allows you to make more use of Font of Life, turning Tormented Shadow into an AoE slow. It'll also provide Morgana with a lot of AP and HP.

Defensive Items

The Abyssal Mask provides Magic Resistance, HP, and Mana - making it a great item for improving Morgana's sustainability in combat. It synergizes well with Soul Shackles thanks to its aura that causes nearby enemies to take additional magical damage.
Easily one of the best defensive items you can buy for Morgana. The passive spell shield from the Banshee's Veil ensures that you won't ever have to waste a Black Shield on yourself in teamfights. It also provides plenty of AP, some CDR, and Magic Resistance.
A great item to use against enemies that focus on Physical damage (like Varus or Yasuo), the Frozen Heart will give Morgana lots of Armor, a good chunk of Mana, and lots of CDR. Any enemy that stands too close to Morgana will have their Attack Speed reduced, making it particularly effective against the enemy ADC. Even if they build Armor Penetration items (like Guinsoo's Rageblade or Black Cleaver), they'll have to have a high enough attack speed or attack range to ignore Frozen Heart's aura.
The Knight's Vow can partner you up with any targeted ally. If you are near that ally, you gain Armor and movement speed, will mitigate a portion of the damage your partner takes from enemy heroes by having it redirect to you, and you restore lost HP when your partner deals damage to enemy heroes. Although these powerful passive abilities are halved for ranged buyers like Morgana, the Knight's Vow is a good defensive item if your lane is falling behind. It gives Morgana Armor, CDR, and HP.
The Spirit Visage increases how much HP Morgana heals from Soul Siphon, allowing you to better sustain yourself in battle. It also gives Morgana CDR, Magic Resistance, and HP.
Easily one of the best items you can build for Morgana. After paining up with an ally hero, it empowers Soul Shackles to create a frost storm around Morgana that slows enemies in its AoE. If your partner auto-attacks after you use Soul Shackles, their basic attacks deal bonus Magical damage to enemies in your AoE. Any enemies your partner attacks that stay in your AoE will take even more Magical damage. TL;DR - it'll turn Morgana into a bit of an initiator.

Consumables

It's never a bad idea to spend some of your spare gold on some Heatlh Potions in the early game. The extra lane sustain can go a long way.
Always. Buy. Control Wards. Frequent purchases of Control Wards and good placement of your Control Wards are essential to making sure your team has firm control of the map. Two of the most important spots to place your Control Wards are the boss monster dens - the Dragons and Rift Herald/Baron.
These are typically saved for when you've filled your inventory.
