This is not a guide on how to play Garen, just how I build him, and how I survive as 'solo top'. You have to play Garen quite a bit to get used to him fully and work out the best way to move around and attack.

If you're playing Garen, and one of your team members decides to go jungling, you'll likely find yourself playing Garen as 'solo top'. In this position, Garen is best played as 'tanky' as possible, building as much armour and health as possible.

Some items that may help a little bit gaining some speed/armour/health regen. These items can be either sold later on or used as part-exchange when buying another item in the mid-to-late game.

These items are essential to the build. Use the 'Promote' on the Banner of Command as often as you can to create giant minions, earning you extra gold. You'll notice the the opposition will concentrate on destroying your giant minions as much as they concentrate on destroying you (The giant minions have >2000 health).

These are just a few items that you might not always be able to afford by the end of the game, but are nice to have when you are inside the enemy's base and destroying everything.
