Janna Guide - In-Depth

By Bella Starlily
Abilities

Janna's Abilities

Passive

Tailwind

Janna's passive provides passive movement speed towards allies and allies moving towards Janna also get increased movement speed.

Q Ability

Howling gale

Janna channels a tornado in the desired direction which knocks up everything it hits. The longer the channel, the further/faster the tornado travels, and the knock-up is longer. Double tapping the ability will immediately use the tornado at a short distance. Good for interrupting dashed like Lee Sin's Q, Zac's E and etc.

W Ability

Zephyr

Main poke tool that is also point and click. It provides passive movement speed and when used, it slows the enemy and deals moderate damage.

E Ability

Eye of the storm

This is your shielding ability. The shield itself also provides attack damage that scales with your ability power. Bear in mind it decays over time. Once the shield is broken/decayed, the bonus effect is lost.

R Ability

Monsoon

Janna channels a monsoon that knocks out enemies within it's range and heals all allies. Extremely good tool to peel assassins off your carries.
Combos

Laning Phase Combos To Trade.

Assuming you started with Spellthief's Edge you'll want to trade to get gold. At level one you'd want to start W - Zephyr and your combo is:

AA >> >> AA

Since your biggest priority is to push for level 2 earlier than the enemy botlane, you should be positioned aggressively and take . And here's what I usually do:

>> >> AA

Make sure to double tap Howling Gale to finish the trade.

If you take E at level 2:

>> >> AA >> AA

In case you started Q - Howling Gale first:

>> AA >> AA

And if you go Q>E for level 1 and 2:

>> >> AA >> AA

And if you start with E - Eye of the Storm first:

>> AA >> AA >> AA

Howling Gale might be a little tricky to hit sometimes with it's full channel. Here's some tricks I use to hit it more often. For example you can channel Howling Gale somewhere from out of sight. What I love doing is placing a control ward in one of the lane bushes and using the ability when the enemy steps up to farm. If playing against an all-in support, you can cast Q and walk up to trade in it's path. This way if the engage support gets tempted to engage, you click your Q and you disrupt their engage.

When you reach level 6 there are a few tricks to using your ultimate to it's full potential.

Janna's R is a very versatile tool as it is a channeled ability. It heals and it displaces enemies within it's range by knocking them back.

1st interaction: Casting Howling Gale to knock-up and enemy as you are casting Monsoon will not knock them back.

2nd interaction: Pressing Monsoon and immediately clicking Flash will channel R at your new location without a delay. This can be used in 2 different ways. You can flash behind an enemy that's running away, in order to push them back towards your team and secure the kill or you can use it to peel off an enemy from an ally that is running away.
What Is My Role as a Support

The Job of The Enchanter.

As the support in your team, your job is to defend your allies and provide buffs, slows and lead everybody to victory.

In laning phase, you want to trade HP and Mana using Zephyr and Howling Gale. Depending on your match up, you can look for early kills or at least burn summoners and help your Jungler setup a gank.

Whenever possible, you should look to roam. Preferrably with your Jungler. Janna's kit provides really easy and fast movement around the map.

If your lane is behind or your adc is not that bright, roaming is your best friend. What I do in situations like that is buy early Boots of Swiftness/ Mobility Boots and rush a Shurelya's Battlesong. This way you can become a second jungler and completely support diff on them

In teamfights ou want to be positioned behind, somewhere alongside your AD and peel any assassins coming for your AD.

Remember your safetly is always first! If you get caught or just get focused down and die, your team will most likely follow shortly after. Don't overlook items like Crown of the Shattered Queen, Anathema's Chains and Zhonya's Hourglass just because they are not typically built by Nami every single game and are considered selfish. You being alive is what your team needs and those two help a ton.

Taking Exhaust or Barrier as summoners is also a very viable option if the enemy has a few assassin/burst threats.

And that's all I can think of for this guide.
Runes

Main Keystone Options:

Summon Aery

This rune synergizes with your whole kit as Nami. It also allows for easy application of effect like Shurelya's Battlesong. Moonstone Renewer, Ardent Censer and Staff of Flowing Water. Combine with Manaflow Band, Transcendence/ Absolute Focus and Scorch/ Gathering Storm

Guardian

Guardian is extremely good if you need the extra sustain/tankiness. Combine with Font of Life, Conditioning/ Bone Plating and Overgrowth/ Revitalize.

Glacial Augment

This rune synergizes with your whole kit as Janna. It also allows for easy application of effect like Imperial Mandate. Combine with Fleet Footwork/[perfect timing, [[future's market/ Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight

Secondary Rune Options For:

Sorcery

Viable secondary options for Sorcery are:
Manaflow Band - for the mana sustain;
Transcendence/ Absolute Focus - for extra cooldown/damage;
Scorch/ Gathering Storm - more preasure early vs late game scaling

Resolve

For resolve I mainly run the following:
Font of Life - the healing it provides is really good;
Conditioning/ Bone Plating - more MR/Armor later vs safer early trading;
Overgrowth/ Revitalize - If scared of being all-in-ed by engage supports vs just heal and shield power/

Domination

Here some of the options I often opt to are:
Cheap Shot - for extra damaged when I slow/stun targets;
Ghost Poro/ Eyeball Collection - honestly both are the same.. Poros are just cute tho;
Treasure Hunter/ Ultimate Hunter - the extra gold can really snowball you hard vs more ultimated over the duration of the game.

Inspiration

What I usually pick for this:
Perfect Timing/ Magical Footwear - a free Stopwatch vs free Boots;
Future's Market/ Biscuit Delivery - faster item spikes vs biscuit for more mana sustain;
Cosmic Insight - for extra haste.

Precision

I rarely take this but here are some options I find viable:
Triumph vs Presence of Mind - more sustained income vs mana sustain;
Cut Down - extra damage to tankier units
Items

Mythic Items

Moonstone renewer

A great item whenever you will need a bit more sustain. It is a pretty safe option and you can rarely do wrong by purchasing it as your Mythic. It synergizes very well with Summon Aery and has amazing single-target healing if paired with .

Shurelya's Battlesong

Shurelya is an amazing item when you need the extra movement speed. It's also extemely good if you are lacking engage in your team or you are playing against a heavy engage team. It's also great for escaping sticky situations or when you are plannin to roam.

Locket of the Iron Solari

Locket is a very good option if you need aoe shields/sustain. Some examples are if you are playing against a Brand, Katarina, Swain, Zyra and etc. You can combine it with and those two alone have a really good aoe party sustain.

Imperial Mandate

Mandate is by far my most favorite item on Janna as it's easily applied with Janna's Howling Gale and Monsoon. It's also applied by Glacial Augment.

Basic, Epic and Legendary Items

Chemtech Putrifier

This item is extremely good if playing against high sustain comps like Soraka, Vladimir, Aatrox, Dr. Mundo and etc. It can help if the enemy is building towards an ocean soul or have Goredrinker and Warmog's Armor. In the most recent patch this item got super nerfed, so I usually avoid it now.

Redemption

Redemption is a great aoe healing tool and it works in almost every scenario and game. It provides stats that Nami can benefit from.

Ardent Censer

Ardent is really good when laning with a hyper carry like Draven, Jinx, Vayne. Both ite's passives don't overlap, so you can have Ardent and Staff.

Staff of Flowing Water

Staff is the equivelent of Ardent but instead if you have an AP carry like Syndra, Sylas, Veigar. Staff gives extra ap, so you can build it alongside with Ardent.

Mikael's Blessing

Extremely good against heavy CC champions like Leona, Nautilus, Sejuani, Ashe, as it provides a cleanse. It also heals alongside with the cleanse, so it can save your carry's life.

Zhonya's Hourglass

An extremely nice option if they have champions like Zed, Kha'Zix, Rengar, Yone. It also provides a good amount of armor along with a "I'm in danger button". Get Stopwatch first if you are planning to build it. If you are in champion select and you know you'll need it, don't hesitate taking Perfect Timing as a rune choice.

Anathema's Chains

This item is extremely useful against high burst melee champions like Katarina, Kassadin, Vladimir. It provides a debuff and lowers the damage taken, so they can no loger one-shot you. The debuff lower's the target's tenacity, so with Nami's kit, you can lock them down for a longer amount of time to shut them down.

Mejai's Soulstealer

If you want to get Mejai's, make sure to buy an early Dark Seal once you get to 8 stacks you can upgrade it to Mejai's Soulstealer. The item itself synergizes with Nami's kit pretty well and it provides extra AP and movementspeed when above 10 stacks. Dying bad tho!

Rabadon's Deathcap

Rabbadon is usually a good item for all enchanters as it provides a major boost of AP. The issue is it is extremely expensive and is also built really late into the game. It synergizes well with Mejai's Soulstealer.

Frozen Heart

This item is extremely good against, attack heavy teams. Combined with Locket of the Iron Solari you are extremely annoying and hard to kill. Good against Master Yi, Vayne, Kayle and etc.

Boots

Ionian Boots of Lucidity

These boots provide really good CDR/Haste. Janna benefits greatly from having more Haste to spam her abilities more often for more impact. It's also a very safe pick as it's always useful.

Boots of Swiftness

This is usually my 3rd most prefferred boots choice on Janna. They provide extra mobility and very good slow resistance.

Plated Steelcaps

The extra armor these provide can be crucial in some games. It's extremely good to grab them when playing against a full AD team/botlane. You get extremely tanky if combined with Zhonya's Hourglass

Mercury's Treads

Whenever you're playing against high AP team or there is a ton of stuns/slows, I highly recommend buying these boots. You get extremely tanky if you combine it with Banshee's Veil.

Boots of Mobility

Extremely situational. The only situation I'd recommend buying these is when you want to roam A LOT. When roaming I'd usually get Boots of Swiftness. They are more gold efficient and there is no fall-off when in combat.

Vision

Control wards

Always keep at least 1 Control Ward in your inventory. Vision denial is a huge thing in this game.

Oracle Lens

Similar to the control wards, upon completion of your Spellthief's Edge/ Relic Shield. you should change your trinket to Oracle Lens

Vigilant Wardstone

Mainly purchased as a last item, the Vigilant Wardstone stores up to 3 control wards. Not only that but it also provides really good stats like ability haste. The best part is that it increases the cap of your active wards - from 3 to 4 for Stealth Ward and fom 1 to 2 for Control Ward.
How I pick my builds

Choosing items

I see a lot of people are asking pretty much the same question when it comes to building their champions.

"How do I decide what is good?"

It is very important to have a plan before your game has started.

Let's imagine you're against a team with the following champions: Bot - Kai'Sa, Leona; Mid - Veigar; JG - Master Yi and a Top - Darius.

One thing is for sure - you need a Mikael's Blessing to counter the Leona and Veigar. Knight's Vow might be a good idea too, as their team has some very nasty high-damage dealers. As a mythic, all options are viable depending on the state of the game:

Locket of the Iron Solari - will be extremely good if Master Yi and Darius are fed for example. The extra resistances + shield are very strong. Now imagine you've paired it with Knight's Vow and Redemption. Your carries should never die.

Moonstone Renewer - In all honesty, this item is the most lackluster item on Janna and I will explain why. The sustain that the item provides is really strong but also very situational. I would get moonstone ONLY in a situation where I can benefit from longer fights or I just really need the extra sustain. Along with it I also prefer going Aery. Back to our example game. Moonstone Renewer can be very good if the enemy is not very fed. If you think that it will help you sustain through the enemy's damage, then it is a good option.

Shurelya's Battlesong For our example game, this is a good option. Their champions are strong if they're on you. With Janna's kit and a Mikael's Blessing for example, the enemy will have trouble sticking to you and your carries. It adds even more kite potential if you're running with Glacial Augment.

Imperial Mandate - Janna has one of the lowest damage dealt in the support enchanter role, so she heavily relies on her allies to do the damage for her, as she keeps them alive. Mandate helps alleviate that a little bit. In our example game, you will be spamming your abilities to help your team kite back. Glacial Augment will proc Imperial Mandate on everybody that steps in those rays. Not only you yourself are dealing more damage but you're also helping your team deal damage. Detonating the mark also grants movement speed. So to sum it up, you reduce their damage, slow them down, and make them take more damage as you help your team kite.

"Okay but what about the rest of the items?"

As an enchanter it is important for you to stay alive to keep your carries alive. Items like Anathema's Chains and Zhonya's Hourglass are very strong and help keep you alive in case you're matched against champions like Pyke, Zed, Talon and etc.

Items like Staff of Flowing Water and Ardent Censer are very good at buffing allies. Ardent Censer is for those that auto-attack a lot and Staff of Flowing Water for those that like to spam abilities.

Redemption and Mikael's Blessing are items you buy to keep people alive. Redemption being an aoe heal and Mikael's Blessing a single target heal with a cleanse - good against CC.

Here are some items I like to mix and match together:

Moonstone Renewer, Mejai's Soulstealer and Vigilant Wardstone - those 2 items stack very fast and are very gold efficient. With your fully stacked Shard of True Ice you get your 3-item benefit for your monstone renewer.

Anathema's Chains and Knight's Vow - the reason I like this combo is because the enemy will often time try to kill you first if they're smart. Anathema's Chains allows you to take less damage from their highest kill threat and Knight's Vow will protect your chosen ally when they realize you can't be killed that easy.

Imperial Mandate and Rabadon's Deathcap - the passive of Imperial Mandate give you AP, Rabadon's Deathcap doubles that AP.

Redemption and Ardent Censer/ Staff of Flowing Water - outside of your Monsoon you have Redemption to give your allies the benefits from both Staff of Flowing Water and Ardent Censer.

Locket of the Iron Solari and Redemption - older players probably remember this combo. Shield your allies while Redemption is cooking.

Now the next ones are a little weird but hear me out..

Moonstone Renewer and Demonic Embrace - the burn gives you more moonstone procs

Redemption and Demonic Embrace - Redemption already has a small burn attached to it. Demonic Embrace gives it an extra oomph.

Imperial Mandate and Zeke's Convergence - both provide a damage buff .. Need I say anything else. Toss in an Ardent Censer for even more on hit pain.
The End

Thank you for sticking around! Please don't hesitate to leave your feedback and let me know if there is something more I can add.
