Introduction

Hey, and welcome to my guide on Kayn, the Shadow Reaper.

I am 'TheInfiltrator', a S6 Diamond V and now a Platinum II player on EUW. The first time, I saw the champion Kayn I knew that I have to play him often. I started playing Kayn on the PBE since he was released and I tried to test different playstyles with him. Quickly I understood, how Kayn works and how I can play him the best way in different situations and this is the reason, why I am writing a guide for u, to understand this champions possibilities fast, too.
Everything u read in this guide is tested by me and proofed.

This guide is basically focused on Kayn, his forms Shadow Assassin and Darkin, his possibilities ingame; jungle and top, different playstyles u can test with him and all his abilities.

Pros / Cons

PROS:
+High mobility
+Burst Dmg with Assassin
+Good sustain with Darkin
+Ult can dodge spells
+Strong healing effects with Darkin
+Fast jungle clear
+Multiple playstyles
+good ganks with Shadow Step

CONS:
-Can't change side once u picked one
-Need tranformation to get truly strong
-Assassin is very squishy
-Vulnerable to CC and peel
-Scales into late
-no CC in Assassin form

Kayn is a very strong lategame champion, but is only really strong, if he has his transformation. Kayn is able to transform into 2 forms. One form is the Shadow Assassin ( The Darkin Scythe: Shadow Assassin) and the other form is Darkin ( The Darkin Scythe: Rhaast)

The Shadow Assassin has his most power in lategame. He is a typical burst champion, like Rengar and Kha'Zix. He is very good in killing squishy enemies very fast.
Darkin is the tanky form from Kayn. he has the ability, to heal himself very strong, especially with his ultimate Umbral Trespass: Rhaast.
So all in all we can say that Darkin is the better form, if you need to play against Bruiser on lane, or many Juggernauts in enemy team and the Shadow Assassin is the better form, if you play against many squishy enemies.

Abilities

Let's start with his passive's:

The Darkin Scythe.

Kayn has 3 different passive's -> each passive for each form. So this is the passive of the beginning form of him.

Kayn is fighting with his ancient, sentient weapon, which has the abilitie, to collect orbs from enemies. There are 2 different orbs, u can collect. 1. The blue looking Orbs and 2. the more brown looking orbs. If ur bar for collected orbs is full, The Darkin Scythe will trigger and u can transform Kayn into one of his forms, but you can not instant transform into any form u want! This depends on the orbs, you have collected, during the game. That means: if you battle ranged champions, you only will get the brown orbs and when u battle non-ranged champions, u will only collect blue orbs. if ur bar has filled up with more blue than brown orbs, you only can instant transform into Darkin. But if u want to transform into the Shadow Assassin, u need to wait a few minutes, and vice versa, it is equally with Darkin and the Shadow Assassin. Kayn also have new effects on all of his spells in each different form.

Shadow Assassin passive:
The Darkin Scythe: Shadow Assassin.

The Shadow Assassin is like I already said, the form with all the Dmg. That can u also see on his passive. The Darkin Scythe: Shadow Assassin has the abilitie that you deal each champion for 3 seconds more dmg (12%-44% - based on level). This is unique for each champion and has a CD for 8 seconds.

Darkin passive:
The Darkin Scythe: Rhaast

Darkin is the bruiser form, that mean it is the form with mid-high hp and more sustain. Darkin has the abilitie, to heal himself very strong -> his passive The Darkin Scythe: Rhaast heals him for 26%-43% he dealt Dmg with his spells.

His Q Spell's:

Reaping Slash

Reaping Slash in his standard form consists of two stages. The first stage is a little dash and in the second stage, he whirls his scythe around himself. both of these stages deal the same amount of Dmg (55/75/95/115/135(+0.65 per bonus ad). That means hitting both of these stages, will deal the damage twice.

Shadow Assassin's Q:
Reaping Slash: Shadow Assassin

Reaping Slash: Shadow Assassin is 1:1 similar to Reaping Slash.

Darkin's Q:
Reaping Slash: Rhaast

Reaping Slash: Rhaast is, apart from the 2 stages, completely different. it has completely new scalings and these scalings are a bit complicated: Reaping Slash: Rhaast is dealing 50% of ur AD (+5% of target's maximum healt)(+4% per 100 bonus AD) physical Dmg, and the Dmg against monsters is capped at 200/250/300/350/400.

His W Spell's:

Blade's Reach

This is the only spell from Kayn that can slow enemies. for the standard Kayn this spell is a bit weak, if you compare it to the transformed W Spell's. After u use this spell, u'll have a short delay in which u can't perform another spell. After this delay, u will dmg and slow all enemies in a line in the direction u cast the spell. Blade's Reach has more range than ur autoattacks -> u can dmg ranged champions good with it.

Shadow Assassin's W:
Blade's Reach: Shadow Assassin

compared to Blade's Reach is Blade's Reach: Shadow Assassin much better. It has not anymore the delay of Blade's Reach, casting it has no castintime anymore, just a short delay -> a shadow of Kayn appears and casts the spell for u (that means u can still move and using skills) in the direction u cast it. The scalings of Blade's Reach: Shadow Assassin are increased from 1.2 to 1.3 and the ranged is 200 increased.

Darkin's W:
Blade's Reach: Rhaast

Blade's Reach: Rhaast is now a spell that allows you, to knock enemies inside the spell up and then slow them. That means that this spell has still the slow and an extra knock up, too CC enemies longer for you, but the Dmg and delay are the same as Blade's Reach.

His E Spell's:

Shadow Step

Shadow Step allows u, to ignore terrain and gains you movementspeed. Kayn also heals himself, if he enter a wall with Shadow Step, but immobilizing effects will interrupt Shadow Step and entering a combat reduces the remaining duration on 1.5 seconds.

Shadow Assassin's E:
Shadow Step: Shadow Assassin

Shadow Step: Shadow Assassin is similar to Shadow Step, but entering a wall will remove slows and if Kayn enters terrain at least once, Shadow Step: Shadow Assassin will be improved for the remainder of its duration to grant 70% bonus movementspeed and make Kayn immune to slows.

Darkin's E:
Shadow Step: Rhaast

It is 1:1 similar to Shadow Step.

His Ultimate Spell's:

Umbral Trespass

Kayn has the passive effect, to mark his enemies for a few seconds, if he dealt any dmg to them. If an enemy is marked, he can use his ultimate Umbral Trespass on him.

When u activate ur ultimate on a marked enemy, Kayn gets untargetable and hide himself in the enemy, u ulted. U have a few seconds time, to "chill" in ur enemy and after these seconds, u need to select a direction with ur cursor and this will be the direction, Kayn will get out of ur enemy. U can ofc get out, whenever u want, u just need to click on the mouse in the direction u want.
After Kayn get out of the enemy, he will deal him some nice dmg.

Shadow Assassin's Ult:
Umbral Trespass: Shadow Assassin

It is like Umbral Trespass with the different that u have 200 bonus range and that ur passive will reset on the enemy u ulted.

Darkin's Ult:
Umbral Trespass: Rhaast

The difference on Darkin's Ult to Umbral Trespass is that he will heal a high amount of health after he dealt dmg to the enemy which scales with his bonus AD and the max HP of the enemy he ults.

The difference between the both Skill Sequences is the E Spell. If u want to gank after hitting lvl 3, skill E, because it's a perfect utility spell, to gank lanes.
If u dont want to gank or u think u can't gank at the time, lvl ur Q again lvl 3.

This depends on ur lane enemy. If you need to play against an annoying ranged champion, like Gnar, use the second Skill Squence. If u trade often against meele, take the first.
