starting items
i use saphire crystal and health potions for starting items becouse you will need extra mana at the beggining of the game and hp potins well i think i don't have to explain.

Spells

flash is always needed to have it can take you to battle or help you escape from battle but there is a diferrence in what secondary spell i use heal not ignite becouse heimer does not have a lot of health and when you take critical damage you need to heal
