Introduction

My name is Mike. I have been playing League of Legends for a while now and Shen is my favorite and most played champion! I have spent a lot of time studying professional Shen players and their gameplay. I have taken a little from each player and perfected it all into one! My guide works for me and hopefully it work for you too.

Masteries

OFFENSE
Sorcery is good on Shen because of how long Stand United cooldown is.
DEFENSE
Block is good early game when you are low level
Recovery health regain is always good when trying to sustain a lane
Enchanted Armor is really good for a tank because bonus armor and magic resistance makes you even more tanky :)
Unyielding is another mastery for early game defense
Veteran's Scars gives you bonus 26 health when fully upgraded which can make you harder to kill early game
Oppression is really good for a tank who is going against champions with stuns and fears like Fiddlesticks
Juggernaut is awesome when trying to be a tank because that 3% of health can really add up in your health bar
Hardiness gives you +5 armor which is good again, for early game
Resistance gives you +5 magic resistance which is also good for early game laning
Perseverance regenerates 2% of your missing health every 5 seconds which is incredible for lane sustainment
Evasive is good for when you are in team fights and champions like Morgana use their Tormented Shadow
Second Wind is a must have mastery for Shen when you fall under 25% health, your Vorpal Blade will have an extra 10% lifesteal bonus and you gain health faster!
Tenacious is really good late game when in team fights for that bonus armor and magic resist
Legendary Guardian is great for trying to chase down an enemy with low health for the killing blow :)

Runes

Seal of Health gives you +5.35 health which is good for early game laning
Mark of Armor gives you +.91 armor which is also good for early game laning
Mark of Scaling Magic Resist gives you +1.26 MR at level 18 which is good for that extra protection against the enemy AP Carry
Glyph of Health Regeneration is good when you are low health and need to rapidly increase your health. even the littlest bit of health regen adds up in lane sustainment
Glyph of Health gives you +2.67 health which adds up when combined with other runes and masteries for being an early game tank
Quintessence of Cooldown Reduction is extremely important for Shen due to Stand United and its WICKED long cooldown!

Summoner Spells

I personally love the Flash Teleport combo! Flash is awesome on Shen because you can use it either offensively or defensively. You can Flash towards a target and then Shadow Dash him to catch up to the enemy and taught him. or you can Flash into the jungle and then Shadow Dash over another jungle wall for the great escape! Teleport is great for split-pushing and ganking. Have an ally place a Stealth Ward or Stealth Ward and Teleport to it for maximum ganking effectiveness! Or, you can teleport to a Stealth Ward that you placed in a bush and push and destroy a tower in that lane. then once the tower is destroyed, you would recall into safety. If you are feeling kill hungry, instead of using Teleport you can use Ignite and finish off an enemy instead of chasing them down. The choice is yours

Champion Abilities

Ki Strike is Shen passive. the bonus damage it does scales based on your maximum health. the cooldown of ki stike decreases by one second for every basic attack.
Vorpal Blade(Q) is Shen ability that lets him and allies gain health while doing damage to that enemy.
Feint is a shield that can protect Shen when an enemy uses Ignite or when you are versing a champion with poison like Teemo and Varus. Feint is also good when you taunt an enemy and you arnt at full health.
Shadow Dash is Shen taunt. when using Shadow Dash Shen taunts an enemy(s) then receives 50% reduced damage from them. however, Shadow Dash can be used defensively as well. you can dash over jungle walls to escape death. it kind of acts like a Flash
Stand United is Shen ultimate! Stand United is a defensive ultimate used for mostly an allies purpose! you can Stand United with an ally that is tower diving, getting harassed, or is about to die and save them. you grant them a shield that absorbs lots of damage and then teleport to wherever they are! pretty nifty huh?

Farming

Great use of Vorpal Blade during laning phase can lead to high farm and rapid health recovery. You want to stay defensive when laning and "hug" the tower. Ki Strike and a Vorpal Blade combo is very successful for killing creeps. If low on health, throw Vorpal Blade on a large siege minion and watch as your health grows :)

Laning Phase Gameplay

Laning phase is the most important phase for Shen. Depending on which champion you have to face, will depend on whether or not you have to play defensive. If you are versing a high damage, solo top champion, then you want to play defensive. That enemy champion will get "antsy" and will try to poke you under your turret. When he does this, taunt him so that way you receive reduced damage and the turret will attack him. Between your Vorpal Blade, Ki Strike, and the turret, you should be able to do high damage and make him recall. You could potentially kill him too. If you are feeling greedy, chase after him and throw another Vorpal Blade if he is low health. if you don't kill him, its alright. just farm the **** out of the creeps and gain as much gold as you can while he has recalled. Make sure you place a Stealth Ward in the bush so you don't get ganked by the enemy jungle. Once you have enough gold to buy your item, recall, buy that item(s), then Teleport back to your tower and play defensive again.
If you are versing another tank that doesn't deal high damage like you, you can choose whether to be aggressive or defensive. If you choose to be aggressive you should invest in wards and place them in the bushes by the jungle so you don't get ganked. When playin aggressive, make sure you still farm. It is better to kill a minion with Vorpal Blade, then to poke the enemy Champion. You shouldn't tower dive with Shen because it takes time to do damage. You don't have a high damage ability.

Team Fight Gameplay

I run Teleport for a reason! have your teammate place a totem in a bush and teli to it. Then, Shadow Dash as many enemy champions possible then use Feint. Let your team do all the damage. Don't forgot to basic attack and throw in Vorpal Blade here and there. This is a great way to initiate a fight. Also, if your teammate is about to die, Stand United with him and save him! Then Shadow Dash the closest enemy champion so they don't attack whomever you are trying to save! :)

Match-ups

Yorick- although you barely see Yorick, he is Shen biggest counter. If Yorick is picked, avoid picking Shen! If you are stuck with Shen against Yorick, play wicked defensive.

Warwick- if for some reason the enemy WW is playing Top and not Jungling again play defensive. WW has great damage, life steal, and attack speed and will be able to blow you up.

Teemo- Teemo has high poke with his poison and his blind can stop you from farming and throwing your Vorpal Blade. I would suggest playing defensive again.

Darius- I cannot stress this enough, play defensive when versing high damage, top champions, is key to winning your lane! Darius and his Ultimate can do high damage. Darius' pull and ability could bring your health very low and kill you.

Jarvan IV- I personally think Shen is strongest against J4. J4 is an off tank/ "high" damage champion. J4 is only tanky late game. so even though Shen doesn't do high damage, over time you can make J4 really low health, you could kill him, or you could force him to play defensive.

Pantheon- Shen counters Pantheon ONLY early game. Shen can sustain in a lane longer than Pantheon which can lead to extra gold and towers destroyed by Shen. If Pantheon cant get any kills early game against Shen, then he wont be of too much use, for his team, late game!

Tryndamere- I have seen a lot of Trynd lately because players are starting to realize how effective his ultimate can be for playing aggressive! Make sure you remember that his ult allows him to take no damage, a.k.a. Undying Rage! So if you are low health and he tower dives, down try to blow him up and taunt him because he will use his ultimate, kill you, and escape without a death!

Lore

There exists an ancient order originating in the Ionian Isles dedicated to the preservation of balance. Order, chaos, light, darkness -- all things must exist in perfect harmony for such is the way of the universe. This order is known as the Kinkou and it employs a triumvirate of shadow warriors to uphold its causes in the world. Shen is one of these shadow warriors, entrusted with the sacred duty of Watching the Stars - exercising judgment untainted by prejudice.

Born to a clan whose members have decorated the ranks of the Kinkou for generations, Shen was trained his entire life to become the Eye of Twilight, and thereupon to dispassionately determine what must be done in the interests of equilibrium. As his final trial to ascend to this position, he was made to attend the Takanu, a ceremony in which his father was tortured before his eyes to test his resolve. Any reaction whatsoever would have resulted in his immediate disqualification, but he never averted his gaze and never blinked, not once. As the Eye of Twilight, Shen must make decisions that would buckle the wills of ordinary men, removing all emotion from the equation. He now works with his fellows Akali and Kennen to enforce the balance of Valoran. This hallowed pursuit has unsurprisingly led the triumvirate to the Fields of Justice.

The Eye of Twilight sees not the despair of its victims, only the elegance of equilibrium.

Summary

Shen is the Tankiest champion in my eyes. With his taunt and shield, he is a great initiator in team fights. Also, throwing Vorpal Blade on a targeted enemy champion can result in your teammates gaining that little health back which could potentially be life saving. When your Ultimate is active, always look around on your map for little skirmishes that are happening. if it looks like your teammate will lose, use Stand United and save him/her, then attack with them. Using Shadow Dash also leads to 50% reduced damage for taunted enemies which is a good bait for your team to deal massive damage I am new to guides and this is my first one. So please don't hate on it and give me corrective criticism and help me help others with my Shen guide!
