Introduction

Hello my name is Podin and this is my AD offtank Rengar guide! I have been playing League of Legends for a while now and the most fun champion I have played has got to be Rengar. Lots of people build him glasscannon, although that is a fun build and i can work i found that building Rengar tanky makes carrying your team a LOT easier. In my opninion Rengar is the perfect bruiser being able to sustain, stick, deal damage, spilt push and has an amazing escape from anything. All that being manaless!

Masteries

Offensive tree:
We put 4 points in Sorcery because Rengar doesn't have mana and is only limited by CD's. Then we put 3 points in Brute Force . You then we have 1 point left that you can put anywhere to get to Martial Mastery increasing our early game damage.

Defensive tree
We put 2 points in Block and one in Unyielding for the early game trades and to lessen AA harass. You can put 2 points in either Recovery or Enchanted Armor , it depends on what you prefer. We put 3 points in Veteran Scars for early game and 1 point in Juggernaut . 1 point in Oppression makes for less damage after we use Bola Strike. We put 3 points into either Hardiness or Resistance depending on the match-up and then 1 point in the following mastery, either Reinforced Armor or Evasive for the lategame damage reduction. We then put 3 point into Perseverance because this mastery is plain OP ,and 1 into Second Wind for the clutch heals. 2 points in Legendary Guardian for some added resistances and to get to Tenacious where we put 1 point in.

Runes

The runes I use for Rengar 90% of the time are:

Explanation and alternatives:
Greater Seal of Armor: Best seals in the game, reduces minion damage, auto attack damage and damage from turret shots. Take these seals 100% of the time there are no better alternatives.

Greater Mark of Attack Damage: The reason i take these over marks such as greater mark of armor penetration or even greater mark of hybrid penetration is the high scaling with attack damage that Rengar has and the fact that it makes farming in general and especially under tower a LOT easier. The other options are by no means a bad choice here it just comes down to what you prefer.

Greater Glyph of Magic Resist: This is where you can differentiate from the standard page the most. You will always be taking Greater Glyph of Magic Resist when facing an AP toplaner and or jungler. When you are not you have 2 basic options. When you consider the toplaner/jungler matchup fairly easy take Greater Glyph of Cooldown Reduction because you scale so well with it. When you consider the matchup hard take Greater Glyph of Armor instead.

Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage: This is by far the best option for Rengar it improves farming, damage against enemies and towers. Depending on what you prefer you can choose greater quintessence of armor penetration instead but i prefer raw attack damage.

Skill Sequence

Explanation for R>E>Q>W
I like to max Bola Strike for the poke and the slow.
Yes you can max Savagery but then you better be vastly superior to your opponent. It does make for better all-ins and roaming power with Thrill of the Hunt. This may be something to consider when smurfing.
I have people seen maxing Battle Roar also, but I feel like the damage is not as reliable as the damage and poke of Bola Strike, I guess it comes down to preference here. When i'm playing versus someone that is stacking armor I sometimes max this.

to summarize:
Max Q for all ins/smurfing.
Max W if you are going to be in the face of you enemies and they stack armor.
Max E if non of the above.

Summoner Spells

SPACE
SPACE

Flash should be takes every single match, there is no better alternative. You can use it offensively to secure kills or defensively to avoid a key skillshot or spell like Command: Shockwave. A neat trick you can do with Flash on Rengar is when you have ulted and it's about to run out but you can't jump on someone flash and then immediately jump.
SPACE
SPACE
Ignite is a great spell on Rengar. Use it to secure kills at the very first levels, or to counter heals, think Dr. Mundo or Soraka. When you've build some damage lategame and almost become an assasin you are just a LOT more dangerous when you have the added true damage from Ignite than you would have been if you took something like Teleport or Exhaust.

If you feel like there are better summoner spells for Rengar feel free to message me and i'll consider putting it in the guide.

Abilities

Unseen predator SPACE Range: 600 (750 with 9 stacks on Bonetooth Necklace)

SPACE
While in brush or in stealth, Rengar gains bonus attack range and his attacks cause him to leap at his target. This bonus lasts for ~0.5 second upon exiting brush or stealth. This will happen regardless of whether or not his target has sight of him, and has no internal cooldown.

Tip: When chasing someone and they run past a push don't be afraid to turn around to get the passive proc and jump on the enemy.

Savagery SPACESPACES Cooldown: 8 / 7.5 / 7 / 6.5 / 6

SPACE
Rengar's next basic attack deals 30 / 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 (+ 100% AD) physical damage and grants him 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50% increased attack speed for 4 seconds.

Tip: You can use Savagery on towers, the bonus damage and added attack speed makes Rengar one of the fastest tower killing champions in the game.

Empowered savagery

SPACE
Empowered Savagery deals damage equal to 30 / 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 (+ 200% AD), and he gains 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 / 100% increased attack speed. Basic Savagery and Empowered Savagery's attack speed bonuses can stack with each other making for 90% increased attack speed at skill level 1.

Tip: Use Empowered Savagery right after Savagery for amazing burst and stacking attack speed to finish your foe.

Battle roar SPACESPACES Cooldown: 15 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 11

SPACE
Rengar lets out a battle roar, dealing 50 / 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 (+ 80% AP) magic damage to nearby enemies. If an enemy is hit by Battle Roar, Rengar also gains 15 / 22 / 29 / 36 / 43 bonus armor and magic resist for 3 seconds.

Tip: When jumping on the ADC in teamifght you will problaly get focused which so use Battle Roar to get the bonus armor and magic resist.

Empowered battle roar

SPACE
Battle Roar also heals Rengar for 40 + (20 × level) health, regardless of whether the ability hits an enemy. Basic Battle Roar and Empowered Battle Roar's defense bonuses do not stack with each other.

Tip: When laning spam you abilities to get 5 stacks of ferocity to use Empowered Battle Roar for sustain.

Bola strike SPACESPACES Range: 575 SPACESPACES Cooldown: 12 / 11 / 10 / 9 / 8

SPACE
Rengar throws a bola at his target, dealing 60 / 105 / 150 / 195 / 240 (+ 70% bonus AD) physical damage and slowing it by 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 / 70% for 2.5 seconds. The slow decays over the duration.

Tip: Use Bola Strike on cooldown to poke in lane and be annoying with the slow. If you freeze lane and keep poking it makes for an easy all-in with Bola Strike into Savagery and Empowered Savagery followed by auto attacks on the slowed foe.

Empowered bola strike

SPACE
Bola Strike initially roots his target for 1 second. The slow is then applied in full after the 1 second, and decays over the remaining 1.5 seconds

Tip: Your jungler comes for a gank? get 5 stacks and use Empowered Bola Strike so the jungler can hit his own CC.

Thrill of the hunt SPACESPACES Cooldown: 140 / 105 / 70

SPACE
Rengar stealths after 1 second (delayed up to 3 seconds if taking damage) and revealing all enemy Champions in 2000 / 3000 / 4000 units around him. He gains 20 / 25 / 30% movement speed and generates 1 Ferocity per 0.75s while stealthed. Lasts 7 seconds or until Rengar uses an ability.

Important tip: You gain ferocity while being stealth so use Savagery before you hit 5 ferocity then jump on someone use the Savagery you activated. At this point you still have 5 ferocity, now proceed to spam q ( Savagery) for a so called 'triple Q'

Tip: If one person is low enough to kill with one auto attack or Savagery but there is another champion next to him finish the low champion in <0,5 seconds so the passive proc is still there and then proceed to jump on the other enemy.

Items

Starting Items

Doran's Shield is the start you will be going with 90% of the time. Without the passive the item is worth a whopping 624 gold. The item also is just so good for early trades and the 100 hp it gives you is so viable. The 8 mitigated damage from an auto attack may seem like it's not much but lets roll some numbers out. Say a foe auto attacks you for 60 damage, doran's shield reduces this to 52 damage. That is a 13% decrease. To get 13% extra decrease from armor you would have to buy a whopping 30 armor.

Doran's Blade also is a good item, but only get this when you are facing someone you know you can kill at level 2 like Lee Sin, otherwise don't get it. How to kill at lvl 2: Use Bola Strike on cooldown untill you get 3 ferocity stacks, when you only need the XP from one minion go into the bush and wait untill it dies. Now level Savagery, jump onto your foe using Bola Strike mid air followed by Savagery -> Empowered Savagery. Check the enemies HP bar if he is getting away at <70 hp use Ignite.

Rejuvenation Bead 5x Health Potion and a Stealth Ward is what you should start only of you feel like the jungle pressure is going to be high and you started purple side. This is because it's easy to be ganked through the tri-brush. This start will make you a lot weaker at the start of the game because you have no bonus combat stats.

Mid Game core

bonetooth necklace

Sunfire Aegis is sooo good when you are facing ad, the armor and hp this item provides makes you the tank you should be. The passive is what makes this item better than rushing Randuin's Omen, yes randuins gives you more hp and more armor and i agree it's a more slot efficient item. But the pushing power and magic damage Sunfire Aegis provides is much more viable midgame.

Spirit Visage is an iteam that looks like it was made for Tankrar himself, the MR and HP make you more tanky and the CDR is very a very good stat on Rengar. The passive also has so much synergy with with Empowered Battle Roar. On top of that will you passively regen around 40 hp per 5.

Bonetooth necklace This item is a must have on Rengar it gives you a lot of damage for little money and the stats after it has been stacked are very good also. The way it stacks is very good because in most games your assists and kills will be higher than your deaths. So an all-round cost effiecient item for Rengar to give him some damage.

Damage Items

Get this item under 2 circumstances, you are extremely fed (yes you can get fed without building damage :0), or you have to split push. The active is great for farming and it adds a littlebit of burst onto your combo. With this item you will also get unlimited sustain and even more hp regen/5.

Last Whisper is the damage item you build if you are not that far ahead, just like with a Void Staff you can do a lot of damage even when not only building damage and/or being behind. The armor should also help you to fight the enemy toplaner if he is building tanky aswell.

Trinity Force has great synergy with your Savagery and the passive from Phage helps you stick you your enemies. A good thing to note is that the AP on this item is not wasted because of Battle Roar's AP scaling. But problaly the best thing of this item is the 8% MS you get, this can just be my preference but I really like it on Rengar.

SPACE
Blade of the Ruined King can be used to fight tanks as well as stick to people and just have that added burst of damage. It's good for its lifesteal and anti kite active.

SPACE
An item i love on Rengar is Black Cleaver, the armor shred and CDR as well as HP and AD are all stats that are amazing on Rengar. The cost of this item is also not that high. Just an all-round good item for damage on Rengar.

Good items versus AD

Randuin's Omen is good item to get tankier, this is a must have when you are playing with a squishy jungler or against a full AD composition, It gives you a lot of armor and HP to counter the AD. The passive is also very good, it makes the enemy ADC wanting to hit you less. Also do not forget to use the ACTIVE ;).

Frozen Heart is only good versus an AS reliant ADC that is very very fed. Provides you with a nice amount of armor and gives you the CDR cap of 40%. You wont get this item in a lot of games but it's and option that you should keep in mind.

Good items versus AP

If the enemy is AP heavy or the enemy AP caster is the only one that is a real threat get Banshee's Veil. Provides you with health, MR and a nice spellshield that might just block a key enemy abilitie. The passive is also nice when facing someone like Gragas or Nidalee.

We all somtimes have those games, you just get CC chained and die every single teamfight. So when facing one of these CC heavy teams get Mercurial Scimitar. It gives you some AD which is very nice for added burst. When you jump out of stealth onto the enemy ADC (or if fed APC) the rest of the enemy team will likely throw all of their CC onto you, so just use the active and keep chipping away at their carry.

Farming / Lanecontrol

Farming?
Almost every game your main source of gold will be from farming, so it's very important to know how to farm. Farming is not something that I can tell you how to do, it's more something you get better at if you focus on while you play the game. Next game you play top mid or ADC try to aim for around 70 CS at 10 minutes.
If you can hit this consecutively you are obviously a skilled 'farmer'.
If you don't hit this or you struggle to hit it consecutively go into a custom game VS one Sivirbot and pick a champion you are comfortable with and just practice farming while zoning Sivirbot.

Tips for farming:
Look at your own caster minions and cannon minion and when minion they are focusing, you can then predict the damage that the enemy minions will take. Remember that the caster minions all the the same AS so the enemy minions will take damage in small bursts.

Farming under tower is fairly easy but i still see a lot of people do it wrong. This should help:
Melee minion needs: 2 tower hits -> 1 auto attack
caster minion needs: 1 auto attack -> 1 tower hit -> 1 auto attack or 1 tower hit -> Savagery/ Bola Strike.
Or remember a melee minion takes 40& of max hp damage from turret.
A caster minion takes about 70% of max hp damage turret.
A nice tip only for Rengar is to use Battle Roar on the caster minion s which will put out the damage that you'd normally do with the first auto attack.

When pushing a wave lategame get the melee minion s to aggro you then walk up to the caster minion s so you stand in the middle of all the minions. Then use Battle Roar and Empowered Battle Roar and if you have the item the active of Ravenous Hydra.

Don't be afraid to use Savagery or Bola Strike to secure a cannon minion.

Lanecontrol / zoning
The first thing you should know and I see way too many people not doing is: Push the wave to the tower when you kill your lane opponent or he backed! Your opponent will then lose XP and gold allowing you to snowball harder.

Freezing is something you should also learn. When you are stronger than you opponent or he is so low that can't come close to you try not to push the wave. Try and get the enemy wave of minions as close to your tower as possible without the minions taking aggro. Now only deal the killing blow to the minions.

Here is a good example of a frozen lane.

Even if you can't freeze the wave you can still be dominant in lane. Dot this by sitting in the bush and farming with the jump of your passive Unseen Predator. Your opponent will think that they will become that minion that just died, and the don't want a Rengar jumping on them. It's all about intimidation.

Gameplay / Teamwork

Level one:
Try and get as many ferocity stacks with Bola Strike before hitting level 2 and push the lane to try and get the level 2 before your lane opponent. When you have to leash you Bola Strike the buff once and run to lane, you can't afford to miss CS. Always tell your jungler to start bottom side for a better leash.

Level two:
Make sure you have 3 ferocity stacks and not Bola Strike CD. Use your passive to jump on your opponent using Bola Strike mid-air into Savagery into Empowered Savagery followed by as much AA's as you can. Push the lane if you killxyour opponent or if he gets very low and is forced to back. If not try to zone you opponent and do not push the lane!

level three - five:
Here you can depend on what you are going to build and what you are going to max. Rengar in kind of unique in the way that he can max all of his abilities.
Easy lane: max Savagery
Enemy build armor and is 'in your face' a lot: max Battle Roar
Enemy has no sustain or you are getting zoned: max Bola Strike
Depending on if you are stronger than your opponent try to trade with him. Note: Do not trade with someone if it means that they are going to heal up and you miss one or two cs, it's not worth it. Keep thinking: about 15 minions or 'cs'(creepscore) are worth the same as 1 kill. You can easily carry some games by just outfarming.

level six
You now have your ultimate ability Thrill of the Hunt, it has a 2 minute CD so you do need to keep that in mind. Try to push your lane to the enemy tower or force you lane opponent to back (or just kill him), and roam down either mid or bot depending on what's pushed. The best way to gank as Rengar is to lanegank and tell in chat to your allies to go in. Rengar is one of the best toplane roamers so make use of it!

Level seven - 'end of laning phase':
Try and put as much pressure on toplane as possible, try to take the first tier tower. When you have your ult up and there are no possibilities to roam, just hold on to it and try to pressure the second tier tower. If the jungler or midlaner show their face top just spam ping dragon and type in chat that your team needs to take it because '2 TOP!'.

Midgame:
You have a couple of options here. If you are fed and you need to carry your team try to roam and look for kills to give to your teammates. I have lost a lot of games where I was 19/3 when I took all the kills, it's important to spread the kills out over your team so that in a teamfight you just overpower the enemy. When you are not so fed just try and pressure in the way of splitpushing. When people come for you your team can take an objective like the mid tower or dragon. When your entire team is stronger than theirs and you know you can win a 5 on 5 teamfight tell your team to group and try to create a pick with Thrill of the Hunt so you can force objectives with a 5 on 4.

Lategame:
The first rule of lategame is: Do not get caught!. The second rule of lategame is Do not get caught!. When you can win a 5 on 5 just group, as simple as that. When you know you can't split push the bottom turrets and tell your team to 'dance' around Baron nashor . If one person comes for you can most likely kill them. When more than one person come for you tell your team to engage the 4 on 3 / 2 / 1 and try to get baron nashor .
