Since your passive can cause the ult to deal 20/40/60/80/100% more damage, in some ways tankyness enables increased damage exposure in teamfights.
I think a sturdy bruiser type build is ideal.

I bought an
Executioner's Calling...
...because, you know, synergy with the champ and all.
edit: Decided to put something serious here :P
I'd start
Boots + 4 pots, which let me get in range for Q for harass, then build into
Ninja Tabi or
Mercury's Treads.
Then go into a
Wriggle's Lantern for some sustain, and rush
Trinity Force,
Phage >
Sheen >
Zeal because it synergizes well with his burst. I'd go
Sheen first if I'm stomping my lane.
Then
Wit's End because it's a cheap Mr item, with attack speed to proc my slow and passive.
Then situational defensive items like
Randuin's Omen,
Maw of Malmortius, some (0-2)
Bloodthirsters,
Frozen Heart, more attack speed through something, etc.
edit again: Some
Doran's Blades and
Vampiric Scepter is a nice replacement for Wriggles too.

I think that
Doran's Blades are generally superior to
Wriggle's Lantern atm. Most tops get them instead of
Wriggle's Lantern anyway. As I have seen from people playing
Jax, after they bought 2
Doran's Blades they went for
Phage->
Zeal->
Trinity Force first. This could also be possible for
Darius (
Zeal i think is superior over
Sheen at this point because of the synergy with
Phage and the passive).
Boots + 4
Health Potion's is nobrainer today.

Yeah, forgot what I went for lifesteal + health :P
I actually don't think I got
Wriggle's Lantern at all, I just said it because w/e Lifesteal + resists + early game item.

I generally start Boots + 3 pots (4 if I can get it) go into double or triple Doran's, get a
Hexdrinker or
Chain Vest depending on my opponents damage then go for a
Bloodthirster. Build situationally from here, but usually it goes: Upgrade to
Maw of Malmortius,
Guardian Angel, and get a
Frozen Mallet.
Haven't really gotten to play him too often, but that's what I've been using and it's been working pretty well.
Oh, and upgrade boots to whatever. Forgot to add that.
Core:
The Bloodthirster
Maw of Malmortius
Guardian Angel
Basically, I like playing him like
Riven or
Renekton early on for ridiculous damage and then transitioning into a tankier build late game.

So well, how would you play him, how would you build him, how would you skill his skills?
I got no idea atm, he could be built as an assasin and a tanky dps. I have seen items like

I would also say he is rather hard to itemize, you can either go for AS to increase the amount of stacks and this way faster a bigger ult, or you could go for AD and increase your overall dmg, but you don't get fast stacks.
