Introduction

Hey guys, welcome to my Challenger Shaco guide! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Eagz and I'm a Challenger Shaco from the infamous Oceanic region (I was born in EUW so I inherently have more skill than every OCE player). I started playing Shaco in Season 6 Flex Queue which was late in the year, and hit Challenger in my first season of playing him - it was just meant to be I guess. My peak rank is 16 600LP - pretty underwhelming when I look back on it, but still an achievevment. I used to tilt and leave games back in the day I'll admit it, but on my day I'd consider my mechanics on the Jester to be the best world (inb4ocebtw).

I'll list some of my achievements on Shaco just to enhance the credibility...
◦ 3x Challenger Shaco
◦ Rank 1 Shaco World Early Season 8
◦ Highest Shaco KDA World for 3 Successive Seasons
◦ Hit Master Season 9 with a 6KDA
◦ Hit Diamond V on KR Server with a 6KDA and a 90% Win Rate on 180+ Ping
◦ Rank 16 Peak Season 8 (600LP)
◦ Best Shaco Mechanics World

Playstyle

This is the most important chapter in the guide. When Rito changed Shaco way back in 9.20, they took my AD Shaco from me. Everything I knew about Shaco disappeared. So, I had to adapt, I had to THINK differently. AP Shaco was something I despised to be honest, so I started playing other champions and roles and only played Shaco a couple times. But I was still playing at a higher level on the Jester than other champions.

It's not about one-shotting or power farming until 3 items...it's about COOLDOWNS and LONGEVITY. AP Shaco isn't meant to be played (in my opinion at least) like an assassin, he's meant to be played like Shaco was designed to be played - a pain in the enemy's rear-end. AD Shaco was about stealth and nuking enemies; AP Shaco is about micro and IQ. I'm sure you guys know who Pink Ward is - that playstyle is very similar to how I go about my business.

Any montage from Season 10 onwards on my YouTube channel is going to help you get the idea...this one linked down below just notice in every clip how I use all of my cooldowns in every fight - nothing is left. If I have my Hallucinate I am more aggressive; if I don't then I'm waiting for my Deceive and playing around my boxes.

Runes

Quick note on Summoner Spells - run Ignite and Smite, no debate.

The next two chapters revolve around AP Shaco's identity: COOLDOWN & LONGEVITY.

There's ONE rune page I'm running.

If you watched the montage I linked in the 'Playstyle' chapter, you'd notice how many times I got Dark Harvest stacks from AoE (Area of Effect) damage and from my boxes spawning when my R dies, or from random boxes I placed prior to a fight. Remember, because we're not one-shotting enemies Electrocute is a lot less useful - we're more about AoE damage rather than just single target damage.

Taste of Blood gives us sustain in fights so we can stay around longer and throw more two-shivs, place more boxes etc. Eyeball Collection is easier to stack in my opinion, and Ultimate Hunter is better than the other three. When every other champion is level 6 Shaco is pretty useless without his ultimate. If a big teamfight breaks out and I don't have my R, might as well ff. Great with cloud drakes.

The new Transcendence gives us 5 ABILITY HASTE (which is the new version of cooldown reduction) at level 5 and level 8. This is the equivalent of 9%CDR, so it plays towards our champion's identity. After we hit level 11, assists and kills on enemy champions reduce the remaining cooldown of basic abilities by 20%. This = more stealths, more boxes, more shivs, and if the fight goes long enough...more ultimates! Gathering Storm has always been a favourite for me - enhances our mid-late game spike.

The minor runes stay the same for all pages. Attack speed lets us clear efficiently early game and duel if we have to. Without it our clear is Iron IV. Adaptive Force as the second choice, kind of obvious, and Armor/Magic Resist as the last option depending on enemy comp.

Build

Right, we're almost done with the pre-game information. When I build on Shaco, and the same goes for runes, I'm only interested in the best setup. I don't really care if another item works well, or it may seem interesting to use, I'm only interested in building optimally. If I'm not running the most effective setup for Shaco in high elo, I'm already at a disadvantage because everyone knows the best builds, runes etc. for their respective champs. By all means, if your intention is to have fun when playing Shaco and experimenting with builds is one of the ways you have fun, then don't let me stop you, but if you want to win and give yourself the best chance of winning, this is where you engage that dormant organ inside your head (sorry, that was my second face).

STARTING ITEMS

For Season 11 the only jungle items available are the starting jungle items - Hailblade (which is essentially blue smite), and Emberknife (essentially red smite).

EARLY GAME ITEMS

Early in the game I want to start building toward Ionian Boots of Lucidity. Why? ABILITY HASTE! Now what about Sorcerer's Shoes? Ever since Riot nerfed Two-Shiv Poison's AP ratio in 11.11, it just feels for me that you don't hit that hard...and it's much worth building towards QUANTITY rather than QUALITY.

MYTHIC & CORE LEGENDARY ITEMS

Liandry's Anguish is the best mythic by far. The ability haste passive and the tick damage FEEL great, especially for your boxes and ultimate.

Then you want to complete EITHER a Zhonya's Hourglass OR Banshee's Veil. Zhonya's Hourglass will work in EVERY, SIGNLE, GAME. But there will be some games where the enemy team composition is nothing but magic damage, so getting a Banshee's Veil is better. But I have even built these two together on occasion and it FEELS (there's that word again) great. It also means you can never really die.

During the mid-game you can also upgrade your Dark Seal if you bought one earlier to Mejai's Soulstealer - DO THIS AFTER YOU HAVE BOUGH LIANDRY'S, NOT BEFORE! And you can also opt for an Oblivion Orb if the enemy champions have a lot of healing, and in most games they will.

LATE GAME ITEMS

Cosmic Drive is an item lots of players buy before Zhonya's Hourglass and Banshee's Veil, and I'm pretty sure Chase does this. But I personally feel as if I don't need THAT MUCH haste THAT EARLY on. The stasis from Zhonya's Hourglass has much more of an impact in those mid-game fights, and even Banshee's Veil is more useful imo. The ONLY time I would build Cosmic Drive first, is if I was snowballing super hard. But getting it as a 3rd/4th major item is ALWAYS going to be good.

Demonic Embrace is the enemy team has a lot of HP - simple.

Finish off your Oblivion Orb into Morellonomicon AFTER you have boots, mythic, and one major. The timing simply depends on the amount of healing the enemy team have at that stage in the game.

Rabadon's Deathcap is great if you are really fed and the enemy team has no magic resist.

Void Staff is the other 'damage' option, and build this over Rabadon's Deathcap if the enemy team has some form of magic resist, especially their back-line.

So a full build might look something like this if I don't need Banshee's Veil, and if the enemy team has HEALING, and they have a bit of MAGIC RESIST for the late game:

Early Clears

I'm going to show you two clears for both sides.
Eagz Clear: Red + Raptors > 2 Small Wolves > Blue
Krugs/Red Side Clear: Red + Raptors > Krugs

Now with both clears you are doing RED AND RAPTORS at the same time.

Choose the EAGZ CLEAR if you want to quickly gank top or bot (depending on what side you're on) - this clear is the FASTEST 2x buff clear in the entire game. So you will always get to that lane first and have 10 seconds on the enemy jungler.

Choose the KRUGS CLEAR if you just want to full clear - still fine, but not as red hot. And note that you can either gank top or bot after Krugs (depending on what side you're on), OR you can simply clear to your blue side.

So, in every game run to your red buff entrance and place a box - this discourages the enemy team from invading. Your setup is very important as Shaco - you struggle to clear jungle camps without multiple boxes in the early game.

***PLEASE PAUSE THESE VIDEOS TO SEE EXACTLY WHERE I PLACE MY BOXES***

***YOUR FIRST BOX NEEDS TO BE PLACED AT 50 SECONDS***

***YOUR 4TH BOX YOU NEED TO PLACE ON RED BUFF AS YOU ARE RUNNING TO THE BIG RAPTOR TO LAST HIT IT - THIS IS THE KEY PART TO THE ACTUAL CLEAR***

***I RESET COOLDOWNS SO I CAN SMITE AGAIN SO IT'S SIMILAR TO A LEASH***
