[11.4] The Ultimate In-Depth Viego Jungle Guide

By Hop3ee
Hey, I'm Hope. I've been playing league since the beginning of S10, and have put over a few hundred hours into the game at this point. Since the beginning of my time with this game, I have had an uncanny ability to pick up and understand champions really quickly, so I thought why not write a guide using that ability. I'd like to apologize in advance for any code-based issues with the guide, please let me know if there is an issue in the comments below. This guide is being updated constantly with new builds and tips that I learn, so if you know something that I may not, please don't hesitate to let me know so I can make this as conclusive as possible

Viego is the brand new champ who was introduced in Patch 11.2, and from the moment I picked him up I fell in love with him. His passive and the passive on his Blade of the Ruined King allow for some really interesting mechanics that no other champ has and I found this really interesting.

So lets move onto the guide.

PROS
+ Fast Clear
+ NO MANA!!!!!
+ Good Duels
+ Good CC
+ Built in sustain
+ Strong Ult Execute
+ Strong Scaling Potential
+ Interesting Gameplay

Viego's Blade of the Ruined King, with the abilities damage and the passive, allow him to clear the jungle quickly, with or without a leash, meaning he can get gold and levels faster without having to rely on ganks. The built-in sustain allows him to not need to back after his first clear as he heals up the majority of the damage.

His Spectral Maw and sustain make him really strong in 1v1 duels past level 6 as his Heartbreaker is strong enough to help end a close fight. Once he is past his first 2 items he will scale incredibly fast.
CONS
- Weak in early game 1v1's
- Need's a few items to become really strong
- Not super mobile
- Can be kited by ranged champs
- Can be countered with anti heal
- Will be banned a lot

While Viego is really strong, his early game dueling is weaker than other junglers like Master Yi and Warwick, and if he were to be invaded by these often, he would fall behind very quickly. He is also weak to CC as his only way of avoiding it is his Spectral Maw which can be baited out easy.

He also suffers from the fact that any items with grievous wounds will cripple his sustain, and cause him to die much quicker in fights.
Conqueror Viego Make's good use of Conqueror as his Blade of the Ruined King passive causes him to gain 4 stacks off of 1 auto attack, meaning it stacks quickly, plus the sustain helps him in 1v1 duels.
Triumph Triumph is the best choice for Viego as overheal doesnt provide much in the way of a shield early game, and after Viego buys Bloodthirster, he gains the overheal shield anyways, so triumph is best for the bonus healing and gold in teamfights.
Legend Attack speed is one of Viego's strongest stats, as his Blade of the Ruined King passive scales with it, and his playstyle works around it. Tenacity is also a strong rune choice if they have cc and you dont want to buy Mercury's Treads during the game.
Coup/Cut Down Coup works really well with Heartbreaker and the rest of Viego's kit, allowing him to execute champions much faster, however Cut Down can be more effective if the enemy has a lot of tanks

Domination
Runes Eyeball Collection and Ravenous Hunter are the best in the domination secondary as they both give you incentive to gank to get them up. The omnivamp from Ravenous Hunter is really useful as it allows you to gain 20% of the damage you deal with your Heartbreaker back if you have max Conqueror stacks.

Press The Attack It's good to note that while Conqueror is the much stronger late-game scaling rune on Viego, Press the Attack allows for stronger early domination of duels, as the stacks can be proc'd extremely quickly with his Blade of the Ruined King passive. Therefore if you want to dominate the early game and begin your scaling faster, Press the Attack is the rune to take.

SUMMONER SPELLS
-
FLASH: Flash is really useful for Viego as it allows him to engage using his Spectral Maw from a longer range, finish off lower hp targets by closing the gap to use his Heartbreaker, or to disengage from unwinnable fights with the enemy.
SMITE: Not taking this spell on any champ you attempt to play in the jungle is an int, as it allows you to gain additional exp and gold from jungle creeps.
GHOST: Not a summoner I would recommend unless you need the extra mobility to keep up with a ranged or mobile champ who will kite you to all hell.

Kraken Slayer

Berserker's Greaves

Blade of the Ruined King
Rushing Kraken Slayer is the quickest way to deal good amounts of damage, as the stats it gives are all really useful for Viego and his playstyle, and the passive gets proc'd by his Blade of the Ruined King passive, which means you will get a lot of use out of the true damage from the item. Berserker's Greaves gives a good amount of attack speed, and the stats combined with the passive of Blade of the Ruined King will make Viego's damage go crazy. The main reason I dont think rushing Blade of the Ruined King is a good idea is that the stats aren't strong enough on their own, and the passive doesn't deal that much more damage than Kraken Slayer would early game, so its more worthwhile to rush Kraken Slayer for the bonus crit and damage.
Bloodthirster
Bloodthirster is a really strong item to take 3rd on Viego, as the damage and crit chance will allow you to kill people much quicker, and the life steal will help you to out sustain most of your opponents.
Infinity Edge
Infinity Edge as a 4th Item is good as you will now gain the passive at 60% Crit chance, which will allow you to deal considerably more damage than before as Viego's auto attacks are his main source of damage. Buying it before you buy Bloodthirster is a waste however, as it doesn't give you the passive as you only have 40% Crit chance at this point, and the stats cant justify buying it over Bloodthirster's sustain.

5th Item Choice

Navori Quickblades
Navori Quickblades is good as it allows you to get the cooldowns of Blade of the Ruined King and Spectral Maw down faster, meaning you can use your Combo's more often. It also has good stats, and provides crit chance which is good as Viego's Heartbreaker scales with it.
Serylda's Grudge
Serylda's Grudge is good vs mobile champions as it allows you to keep them slowed and attack them as they try to run. It also has good damage and ability haste, and also provides armor pen which is useful vs bruisers and tanks.
Black Cleaver
Black Cleaver is another strong item, and is especially useful against tanks and bruisers with the armor shredding. It works well with Viego's Blade of the Ruined King passive as the bonus auto also grants a stack, and the missing hp damage also gets added onto both attacks.
The Collector
The Collector is a good item into squishier teams as it grants some lethality to negate armor, and has good damage to go with it. The passive is also useful as it allows you to stop them surviving on 1hp.
Mercurial Scimitar
Mercurial Scimitar is useful if the enemy team has 1 type of hard cc that you can't avoid, and you just need to get rid of its effects instantly, it also gives some magic resist and the crit chance which is nice to have for this build as Viego doesnt have super high base MR.
Guardian Angel
Guardian Angel is a great item to take if you are the teams main source of damage, as without you they will not be able to win fights. The revival is useful as it gives you a chance to finish off any champs who your team might still be fighting once you respawn.
Phantom Dancer
Phantom Dancer is a good item if you want to stay stuck to your enemies while also building more attack speed, as the passive movement and Ghost is really useful vs more mobile champs allowing you to keep up with them to continue fighting, this could also replace boots as a 6th item allowing you to get 100% crit chance.
Mortal Reminder
Mortal Reminder is the last item you should consider buying as it will help you to out sustain other healing champs, and it will be a necessity vs champs like Warwick and Dr. Mundo. If you choose to buy this item you will need to buy Executioner's Calling much earlier into the game to ensure you can counter the other champs healing early.

Best Choice
Navori Quickblades and Black Cleaver seem like the best options generally from a raw damage standpoint, however they wont be the best in every game as each item fills a different purpose.

Sovereign's Domination

Whenever an enemy champion is killed by Viego or dies within 3 seconds of being damaged by him, a Mist Wraith spawns from their corpse for 8 seconds. Viego can basic attack a Mist Wraith to possess it, heal himself for 8% (+2.5% per 100 bonus attack damage) (+1.5% per 100 ability power) (+250% bonus attack speed) of the target's maximum health, and blink to its location after winding up for 1 second, during which he is untargetable (except to turrets).

Possession lasts for 10 seconds and replaces Viego's basic attacks, basic abilities, items, base stats (depending on Viego's level), and appearance with the champion the Mist Wraith was summoned by and grants him a free cast of Heartbreaker that is initially placed on a 1.5-second cooldown. Viego also gains 10% bonus movement speed while moving toward nearby enemy champions during this time.

Viego cannot use item actives, consumable items, nor the shop while under possession.

Viego will preserve his current health percentage between transformations.

Viego's passive is his most skill expressive ability that requires knowledge of the kit of nearly every champion in the game, and is able to completely turn a fight or game around if used correctly. The knowledge of when to possess someone and how to play them will help considerably in fights. When you plan to use this ability you need to consider the state of the game. Is this champion fed or behind?. Who on their team is left alive?. Will you get instantly burst down if you possess them?. If you can accurately judge these things on the fly, you will be able to use this ability to the best of its capabilities.

In order to get the most out of Viego's passive, you want to use it whenever you are in a team fight, as the additional cast of his Heartbreaker is incredibly powerful if you are fed. If used correctly could be utilized to get multiple back-to-back kills from Heartbreaker, and the healing from it, in addition to the healing from Conqueror and Ravenous Hunter mean he has a lot of sustain.

Blade Of The Ruined King

Viego's basic attacks deal 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6% of target's current health in bonus physical damage on-hit. The bonus damage has a minimum threshold of 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 and is capped at 80 against monsters.

Additionally, Viego's damaging abilities apply a mark to enemies for 4 seconds. Viego's next basic attack against a marked target consumes the mark to strike twice, with the second strike dealing (+0.2 attack damage) (+15% of ability power) physical damage and healing him for 150% of the post-mitigation damage dealt, increased to 155% against monsters. The second strike is affected by critical strike modifiers and, while not under possession, it applies on-hit effects at 100% effectiveness.

ACTIVE: Viego thrusts his blade in the target direction, dealing 25 / 40 / 55 / 70 / 85 (+0.6 attack damage) physical damage to enemies hit, increased by 0−75% (depending on critical strike chance), and 10 bonus physical damage against monsters.

Blade of the Ruined King's passive remains under possession.

The passive on Viego's Blade of the Ruined King is arguably the most important part of his kit, as it provides on hit current hp damage, gives incredible sustain, and also gives you the ability to double hit from the mark, which helps to best utilize his Conqueror by stacking it extremely quickly. The fact that his double hit can apply on hit effects means that when combined with the Kraken Slayer in this build, can get a lot of it's passive proc's off extremely quickly, allowing for insane damage. This also applies to Blade of the Ruined King as the current hp damage from that is also added to both attacks. It is interesting to note that in the same way Conqueror can be stacked extremely quickly with the double hit from the mark, Press the Attack reacts the same, allowing it to only get proc'd with 2 AA's.

To use this to the best of its ability in your clears, you want to hit as many jungle creeps as possible, with the best-case scenario getting a mark on all of them, then basic attacking each of the marks to set them off for the damage and healing. In combo's this should always follow after your Spectral Maw-AA, as otherwise you will be missing out on an additional mark, costing you some damage and sustain on the enemy.

Spectral Maw

Viego charges while being slowed by 15% for up to 3 seconds to increase Spectral Maw's mist missile range and stun duration over the first second of the channel. Spectral Maw can be recast at any time within its duration.

If the charge completes without reactivation, Spectral Maw is canceled and goes on full cooldown.

RECAST: Viego hurls a blast of mist in the target direction and dashes a fixed distance of 300 in the same direction, though not through terrain. The mist deals 80 / 135 / 190 / 245 / 300 (+100% of ability power) magic damage to the first enemy struck and stuns them for 0.25−1.25 seconds (depending on channel time).

If the charge is interrupted, Spectral Maw resumes a reduced 3-second static cooldown. Spectral Maw resets Viego's basic attack timer. Viego can cast any of his abilities while dashing.

Spectral Maw is a crucial part of Viego's kit as it is what allows him to deal a large amount of his damage with no repercussions. The stun lasting 1.25s when its fully charged is more than enough time to get off a full combo, and if you are fed enough, 1 shot someone with this build. The best way to get a consistent max stun off is to either use the ability from stealth, or to flash into it for extra range. It's good to note that the dash on Spectral Maw will always be at max range, regardless of the stun and duration range, so if you need to avoid a skill shot or escape from someone, tap the Spectral Maw.

Harrowed Path

ACTIVE: Viego sends a spectre in the target direction that creates a trail of mist along its path which lasts 8 seconds. The mist spreads around the first instance of terrain encountered.

While inside the mist, Viego gains 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50% bonus attack speed and, if he is not attacking or casting, he becomes camouflaged and gains 20 / 22.5 / 25 / 27.5 / 30% (+4% per 100 ability power) bonus movement speed.

Declaring a basic attack or casting an ability will break the camouflage and remove the bonus movement speed, preventing Viego from gaining them again for 0.6 seconds, refreshing upon further attacks and ability casts. Harrowed Path can be cast during any of Viego's abilities.

Harrowed Path is an interesting ability for Viego, as the stealth aspect of it allows you to dodge point and click abilities and basic attacks, gain move speed to catch and run from enemies, gives attack speed to speed up your combos, and allows you to surprise them as you come out of stealth. This can be used in a number of ways ranging from a DPS enhancing ability with the attack speed, to an escape with the fact that the moment you use Harrowed Path, you become invisible for around a second, regardless of if the enemy was in your detection range or not, which could be incredibly useful to escape an unwinnable fight if you Flash away.

Heartbreaker

ACTIVE: Viego discards his current possession if he has one and gains displacement immunity over the cast time, then blinks to the target location.

Upon arrival, Viego creates a blast that deals 120% AD physical damage to all nearby enemies, increased by 0−75% (depending on critical strike chance), and knocks back all but one up-to 400 units away depending on proximity.

The most wounded enemy champion, alternatively the closest one, is not knocked back and instead takes the blow from Viego's blade, which deals 15 / 20 / 25% (+3% per 100 bonus attack damage) of target's missing health in bonus physical damage, slows them by 99% for 0.5 seconds, and applies on-hit effects at 100% effectiveness.

If a possession is discarded, Heartbreaker will be placed on a 1.5-second cooldown if it is not already on cooldown.

Viego's ultimate, Heartbreaker is comparable to that of Akali's Perfect Execution and Pyke's Death from Below, in which it increases with damage the lower the enemy is, while being similar to pyke's ult as it is a blink with an area of effect. The ability scaling with Crit chance is perfect for this build, as 3 of the 4 core items are based around Crit and extra AD. It is interesting to note that unlike Pyke's depth from below, Viego's Heartbreaker works as a dash regardless of an enemy champion is inside it or not. This allows for some interesting plays using Heartbreaker almost like a second Flash, either for escaping over walls and running away, or to close the gap between you and an enemy champ.

Full Combo = W-AA-Q-AA-R-AA

This combo, which is | Spectral Maw - AA - Blade of the Ruined King - AA - Heartbreaker - AA | Is the quickest way for you to get damage off on anyone as Viego. It works by utilizing the bonus AA from Blade of the Ruined King's passive as much as possible, weaving AAs between each ability.

Flash + Full Combo = W-D/F-AA-Q-AA-R-AA

This combo, which is | Spectral Maw - Flash - AA - Blade of the Ruined King - AA - Heartbreaker - AA | Is the same combo as before, but allows you to close the gap with Flash and engage with your Spectral Maw immediately. Using W before you flash allows you to hold it until you get the maximum stun time and distance before you even get in range.

Here is an example of the combo at full build, into a target with 100 Armor and MR

Max Range Ultimate = D/F-W-R

This combo, which is | Flash - Tap Spectral Maw - Heartbreaker | Utilizes the fact that the dash on Viego's Spectral Maw is always at max range, regardless of how much you charge it. This allows you to travel the furthest distance possible in the shortest space of time to use Heartbreaker to finish a kill.

Early Game

Viego's early game is one of his weakest points, while he has a great clear, he isn't the best at dueling at this point in the game. To make up for your lack of duel capability in the beginning, you need to hyper farm to 6 and get Noonquiver, at which point you will be able to fight people 1v1 and clear much better.

For his clear, you want to start at blue sentinel regardless of what side you are on, then you go to gromp and then into greater murk wolf. Once you have finished clearing the blue side, you go to red brambleback. Once you have double buffs you go straight to rift scuttler and try to avoid getting into a fight with the enemy jungler over scuttle, make sure to also use your smite on the scuttle so you can gain get back the hp lost before. Then you go to krug's, then go to raptor's to finish the clear. Use your smite on either the krug's or raptor's if your hp gets low.

From this point you want to repeat the clear again, starting at gromp and following the same path. By this point, you should have enough gold to back and buy Noonquiver and should be level 6. At this point, you should now be able to duel with people and make successful ganks. Now you want to gank where possible to secure kills for your team, and keep farming until you can afford Kraken Slayer

Mid Game

Viego's main goal in mid-game is to focus on both ganking lanes until laning phase is over, and also focusing hard on getting the objectives. At this point you should be scaling quite quickly, getting kills, and farming up. Once you have your 3 core items you should now be able to duel most people. At this point, you need to try and help your team to scale up with you as much as possible, or if you think you are comfortable enough with the champ, you can focus on hyper scaling yourself in order to 1v9 the enemy team, this does, however, leave you vulnerable in the late game, as the rest of your team will be quite far behind you in levels and items, and if you aren't able to keep up your carry, then it is quite easy to lose (this is where building a Guardian Angel proves to be super useful).

Late Game

By late game, you should be nearing the point of buying your 5th item, which you need to buy based on how the game is going, which we discussed earlier in the guide. Now you need to focus on getting the dragon soul, as it will provide a huge tactical advantage to whichever team acquires it. When coming into late game teamfights you want to focus on trying to get a pick on someone who is out of position, if it's possible to save your Heartbreaker and still get the kill, then avoid using it, as you want to use your Heartbreaker to hit as many people as you can in the team. The ability to use Heartbreaker again after you get a kill and become the enemy champion is extremely powerful, as you can chain it to execute multiple members of the team which if done right, could secure you an objective or even the win.

Getting elder drake is a priority for any team, but when combined with Viego's Heartbreaker allows you to execute squishier enemies in one short combo, and tankier champions in a much shorter time than usual.
So here's the conclusion of the guide, I hope that at least something I have said here will be of any use to you, and if you have any suggestions regarding the guide then feel free to leave a comment below. This is my first ever guide so I apologize for any mistakes I might have made, and will fix them when I get the chance. I doubt this guide will be viable for super long as rito will undoubtedly nerf my boi into the ground, but for now, let's enjoy him while we can :)
