Really difficult lane. You can't 1v1 him at all until you get mercurial scimitar. Start doran's shield and avoid his E stun with your Q and then go after him. Remember, your blood price W goes through his E!
Akali
Tankali is a thing now, and I'd say she is really easy, either way. Both AP and Tank, you destroy her. When goes invisible, use your E to damage her and fight away from minions. She can ult away and escape.
Darius
Skill match-up. He needs to get kills early game and you don't really die because of your W, but he can harass you a lot and potentially kill you early game. Mid-Late game, he is a total 0 against you, provided he didn't snowball.
Cho'Gath
He has sustain, just like you do, but you out-sustain him. Harass him with E and once you get level 6, Q, E, ult and enable blood price and he is dead.
Ekko
Ah, tank ekko. You counter him in someways but he is very slippery. Most of the times he will just run away with his passive and slow you with his Q. You need to get a good Q-E-R combo and enable blood price to kill him before he can run away. I'd recommend asking for ganks to surround him so he can't run away.
Dr. Mundo
Very easy lane. You can even cheese a free first blood on him if you play it right. He has no sustain except his ult, no escape/gap closer and no major damage. Easy in all parts of a game.
Garen
This guy is very strong early. He has sustain with his passive and an execute ultimate which can screw you very hard. Buy a doran's shield, just play passive, and once you have botrk and boots you can kill him and he won't be able to run away.
Gangplank
Runs out of mana very fast, no escape/gap closer, no major CC. Very easy lane and you can farm him all laning phase. You can cheese a first blood as well!
Gnar
Pure cancer in laning phase. Poke, slow, stun and stun again!! Don't fight him when he is small. Fight him when he's big. When he's small he is so slippery you won't catch him. But when mega, he is very immobile and easy to kill.
Illaoi
Just sustain through the poke. When she E's and grabs your soul, get out of the circle and go back in lane, even while vessel.
Irelia
Yeah, I hate her, especially after the buff. She has CC, she has good scaling and auto attack based. One of the few times I would buy frozen heart is this one.
Kindred
Not a top laner, but if they are in a game, you will suffer, a lot. So slippery you will never catch them unless you get a good Q but even then they can avoid it with their own Q which is on a ridiculously low cooldown. Ban this one in stead of jax. BAN THEM!
Master Yi
Easy match-up in my opinion. As soon as he is finished with his Q you can use your own to knock-up. You out-sustain him in 1v1s plus he is weak at the moment because of the removal of sated devourer and rageblade costing more gold and giving less stacks.
Kennen
Ridiculous. After 6.9 mage updates (BUFFS) he is a nightmare. Constant poke that you have trouble sustaining, can run away and the new ult winning 100% of the team fights with a zhonya's. Start doran's shield, farm with blood price under turret, ask for jungler to camp top to set him behind.
Gragas
I have been against a gragas top only once, so this might be wrong, but I doubt it. Harass with E, if low, charge you blood price W, go all in with your Q and kill him. End game, 1v1s should be in your favor since you out sustain him and deal tons of damage.
Jayce
Will do a lot of damage with his E-Q combo, and you might die early. Try playing passive, avoid his E-Q with your Q and when he has no mana, harass the hell out of him with E and when you feel you are ready, charge W, go all in with Q E and he must be dead by then. Do not tower dive him.
LeBlanc
Any burst champion is difficult for Aatrox. You need to build resistance in order to not die. Buy resistance 3rd item if enemy burst is fed. If not fed and behind buy 5th and 6th item resistance.
Vayne
Condemn is a stun that lasts longer that a 30-min game. Try to avoid being close to walls. Also, buy Phantom Dancer and then blood thirster then go buy randuin's omen. You need the extra MS from PD and the AS reduction and MS reduction from omen to kill this champion.
Kalista
If you go against a good kalista, you will get kited so hard that even the all world's slows will stop her. The only thing I can say is, don't pick into her in ranked games. And if you first picked and she second picked, try to avoid fighting her.
Fiora
Can parry your Q, and stun you with that. Don't fight her 1 on 1 because she can just use her passive, then ult you then get healed more than you do.
Ryze
Here how it goes. You either start W and get Q lvl 2 and all in him then, or you wait until he gets lvl 3 and you die. He is so annoying to deal with. So strong so everything. I would recommend you avoid this match-up as much as possible. If you can't help it, poke him with E till he goes out of lane. Don't ask for ganks unless you have an early game jungler. He will kill both you and the jungler if the jungler is not strong early. Your best bet if you gang-bang him 3v1.
Aurelion Sol
Easy. Start W then Q and kill this guy. He can't do anything because you are melee and his passive and W don't do anything to you. Ask you jungler to camp this guy to get both ahead and stomp the game.
Cassiopeia
There's no running away from her. As soon as she gets a tear, you may as well help your jungler jungle because you won't like the top lane after she has tear. Get her ealy, where she is vunerable. Her W can totally negate your Q, so watch out.
Galio
Laning against galio is pretty easy. Because he is easy to all assassins, and AD champions. Aatrox pretty much is an assassin-like champion scaling with AD. Poke with E and if he is greedy and commits for the farm, punish him heavily.
Tryndamere
Ah, Tryndamere, Aatrox' greatest creation. Skill match-up. If I were you, I would rush a executioner's calling and totally negate his sustain with it and your sustain on top of that. Poking him is pointless, and the best way to beat a tryndamere, is pre-6, because he is strong than you. Post-6, the tides turn and the match-up is in your favour.
Jarvan IV
This guy snowballs, like darius. Negate that with your sustain and starting a cloth armor and max W first. Ask for ganks post-6. No ganks earlier as it may result in him getting a double.
Kayle
One of the most nerf-worthy champions as of patch 6.12. Is pretty much ranged aatrox without the crazy sustain and the late game tankiness. Shreds through your resistances and demolishes anyone who tries to 1v1 her. Try to ask for ganks pre-6, where she does not have the ult and she is very squishy.
Diana
She can be scary. Just poke her and you will win lane 100%.
Shen
Shen, please. This guy is the early game snowballing tank anti-tank with his % HP Q. Start W and harass him with blood price as much as possible. At level 2 get Q and go in for extended trades, and at level 3 he most likely try to hug turret. All-in him there and get that kill.
Vladimir
Welcome, the mage version of Aatrox! Weak early just like you, scales so well, just like you, but you have an advantage he doesn't. Your early game is strong than his, and you can buy an executioner's calling while he can't buy the AP version of it which is morellonomicon because it gives him mana and he can't use it. Pretty much rush a executioner's calling before botrk and kill him early, with jungler preferably.
Swain
Vladimir number 2. Again rush a executioner's calling and kill him early, preferably pre-6. Try to avoid his root.
Quinn
This champion is the most annoying thing to deal with on the top lane. Don't pick into quinn top. She counters everyone.
Nasus
Welcome to farming simulator. The thing is he stacks armor and well, he counters you this way. Another thing is that his armor preferences are frozen heart and randuin's omen, which both counter you harder than Jax with perma counter strike enabled, and like that was not enough, he has his cancerous wither, which once again reduced your AS. The only thing that will help you in this fight is denying him farm, which is pretty basic to facing nasus, and calling for ganks early. This will force him to keep being on top lane to get farm and not help his team.
Malphite
Direct counter. Read the nasus page. He also has his ult which can setup really good ganks, so yeah. And he has nasus' W in his E which is AOE.
Renekton
Oh man I hate renekton. He pushes your lane so hard to deny farm and wants to get ahead. Start and max W, try not to get pushed in, when he goes in with his dash to trade, trade back, and trade for an extended period of time, because of his cooldowns, this will punish him hard. Start cloth armor.
Pantheon
A weaker version of renekton with great roaming potential. Don't trade at all here or fight until you have botrk. Ask for ganks if possible. Start w and max it first, and also start cloth armor.
Nautilus
Laning against nautilus is pretty easy! Just poke and trade until he is low then go all-in and you won the lane. Be ware of ganks however because with his passive it can screw you over pretty hard.
Sion
Same with nautilus, but just be ware of his Q because it can turn around in his favor.
Hello and welcome to my guide to Aatrox, The Darkin Blade. I am from EUNE server I have been playing him since his release in 2013, when he was literally broken. As of right now, he is the champion which has the most mastery points in my main account, around 50k. I have tried several builds and playstyles and I believe this is the best build and playstyle as of right now, patch 6.9. I have played him in jungle, top, mid adc once (didn't work out well) and support.
I real like this kind of ADC rune page because it gives Aatrox everything he to do well in the early game. Quints of AS gives Aatrox a great boost of attack speed to jungle clear and sustain in lane because of his W Blood Thirst. All the others should be self-explanatory. Change the armor seals with flat HP seals if you want to minimize your early game squishiness.
Masteries
Masteries
I really like this mastery tree for the top lane. It gives you that all-in potential when you have full stacked Fervor of Battle . You could also go for Strength of the Ages in the top lane and the jungle because of the 15% tenacity the tree offers and the fact that you get HP from minions and 300 free HP.

You usually want to start and max E first but if you have trouble in lane against poke, you can max Blood Thirst first.

Take flash 100% of the times. No excuses.
Map pressure, and presence in team fights. Don't use it to go back to lane.
