Hey! I am ori main, obviously an Orianna main. My 2nd main is Garen. I think Garen is a great Champion to learn, as he is playable in most Roles and pretty easy to pick up. Since his Mini-Rework he's also Meta for pretty much the first time. This guide will tell you everything you need to know about him!

I've met quite a few people who didn't know about the new Garen Scaling with Attack Speed and accused me of trolling their games. I've also witnessed the same thing happen to other Garens in my games. I wanna clear this up: Eversince Patch 9.20 Garen's amount of spins per E Judgment scales with Attack Speed. And it does incredibly well.

Combine that with the fact that E Judgment can Crit and has nice AD scaling, et voilà:

Eversince his Mini-Rework Garen's E Judgment can proc Conqueror. That means that each Spin functions as an auto attack, acquiring 1 Stack of Conqueror. This made Garen significintly stronger than before. Triumph is obvious, you take it because it delivers incredibly strong sustain in Teamfights. Legend: Tenacity is very strong on Garen, because the only thing that counters him is CC which keeps him at a distance. Tenacity removes a large portion of that CC. Lastly Coup de Grace because it makes your R Execute even stronger.

Now it depends on your matchup. The standard 2nd tree is Bone Plating and Overgrowth (or Demolish for splitpushing). Even though it's especially strong against poke and ranged Champions, it's also generally a good allrounder. However, I personally like to take Cheap Shot and Ravenous Hunter whenever my matchup allows it (melee). Cheap Shot deals bonus true damage against targets you hit with your Silence Decisive Strike, which means it impowers your Q Decisive Strike E Judgment combo. Ravenous Hunter stacks healing from Ability Damage, which means that especially your E will heal you for a good amount when fullstacked.

These are very briefly summarized Skill explanations I came up with. If you want to know more about the ability, hover over it with your mouse and read the official spell description!

Perseverance (Passive) Garen regenerates a portion of his maximum health every 5 seconds. This regeneration process is set on a 7 second cooldown, when hit by an Epic Monster, Tower, Champion.

Decisive Strike (Q) Garen gains 30% Movement Speed. His next basic attack within 4.5 seconds deals bonus Physical Damage and silences the target for 1.5 seconds. This Ability can crit and proc Energized Attacks from Items like Rapid Firecannon or Stormrazor.

Courage (W) Passive: Garen gains 0.25 bonus Armor and Magic Resist per minion killed. Stacks up to 30 times at 120 minions. Active: Garen gains a shield for 10% of his maximum health and 60% tenacity for 0.75 seconds. He also receives 30% less Damage for the next few seconds.

Judgment (E) Garen starts spinning and dealing AOE damage to all nearby enemies for 3 seconds. The nearest enemy takes 133% the damage. Amount of spins scales with Attack Speed.

Demacian Justice (E) The targeted enemy Champion takes damage equal to 150 / 300 / 450 plus 20 / 25 / 30% of their missing health.

Garen has lots and lots of Items that work on him since his Rework. You can now build most Bruiser-, Tank- and even some Lethality- and ADC-Items. In this Chapter, I'm going to explain what qualifies a few of his currently most viable options.

Trinity Force Probably the best Item for Garen as of right now. Even though it contains Mana in its build, which is useless for Garen, it's still incredibly worth it. It comes with Phage, a good Item on Garen because his E Judgment can proc its passive. Then there's Stinger which grants a good amount of Attack Speed and 10% Cooldown Reduction, both of which is very useful for Garen's current Kit. Then there's Sheen - I'm sure a lot of low elo players don't really understand how strong this Item is, as it's incredibly strong for Garen's main combo (more on that later).

Phantom Dancer Phantom Dancer is a very strong Item on Garen eversince the Rework - it comes with everything Garen needs - loads of Attack Speed, Crit and a very valuable Passive called 'Lifeline', which shields you when your HP hits critical levels. It's basically the ADC counterpart of Sterak's Gage.

Boots Boots of Speed are obviously a must-have on every Champion. But Garen has quite a few Options to choose from. If you're opting for the highest possible damage take Berserker's Greaves. Otherwise take Ninja Tabi or Mercury's Treads depending on matchup or enemy composition. Against lane bullies you always take Ninja Tabi or Mercury's Treads.

Guardian Angel One of the best Items out there - optimal on Garen. Grants AD, Armor and a Passive that revives you whenever you die (5min cooldown). Makes you more viable as a frontline in teamfights; run in and AOE hit as many people as possible. With W passive and Guardian Angel's Armor you can peel very well for your other teammates. You're probably going to die from such a kamikaze attack - but no worries, Guardian Angel will revive you.

Dead Man's Plate Makes you a lot tankier, gives you more ability to peel for your team. Also provides a great passive to make you more mobile, combined with your Q Decisive Strike you're going to be a fast boy!

Spirit Visage Seems like a normal Magic Resist Item on the surface. But the real precious part about this Item is its passive: the 30% increase of self-healing effects, which includes: Garen's Passive Perseverance, Ability Healing through Ravenous Hunter and Physical Damage Healing through Death's Dance. It's all coming together, isn't it?

Death's Dance This in combination with your E Judgment turns Garen into a Lifesteal Frontline beast, less effective but similair to Aatrox or Xin Zhao. As hinted before, Ravenous Hunter and Spirit Visage can be used to maximize this effect.

Infinity Edge This is going to increase your Critical Strike Chance to 50%. It also provides incredible amounts of AD. What else do you want? (Only works when far ahead or as ADC Garen)

Thornmail Very useful mid-lategame Item when playing against a lot of AD, especially if there's a fed adc in the enemy lines.

Last Whisper Very useful Item when playing against a lot of tanks, or only one incredibly chunky boy even. Always worth picking up and continueing into Lord Dominik's Regards or Mortal Reminder when facing a lot of healing.

First of all, let's explain Garen's Standard Combo:

First of all, you use Q Decisive Strike to gain Movement Speed to gapclose towards your enemy. This also triggers Sheen to empower your next Auto Attack. Next up, you use your E Judgment to shred your silenced enemy to pieces. The silence prevents him from flashing, dashing or escaping otherwise for 1.5 seconds. When he's low enough, use your R Demacian Justice on him. When ahead enough, you can manage to shred him low enough for R Demacian Justice to be lethal within the 1.5 second silence - that means he has 0 counterplay after you hit your Q. Even if he flashes right after the 1.5 seconds are over, as long as you pressed R before or even in the same momen, he'll still be executed.

What when you don't have R Demacian Justice ready? No worries:

Q Decisive Strike-Auto Attack > E Judgment > Auto Attack(s) > Q Decisive Strike
This can be used for trading during early game, but during lategame it should be lethal, even without the 2nd Q Decisive Strike. Once again, you proc Sheen on both of your Q Decisive Strike-Auto Attacks. Besides of that all of your abalities have the Chance to crit. Great damage output.

There are really good Synergies between Garen and some Champions.

First of all, Garen works amazing with any kind of Support who can buff, heal or shield him (especially in the botlane). The best ones are probably Yuumi because she offers CC, healing and Mobility for Garen and Lulu, mainly because her R Wild Growth because it works very well on Bruisers, but also because of her W Whimsy which grants the target ally bonus Attack Speed. Other honorable mentions which fit into this category are Soraka, Nami and Janna.

Then there are (mostly tanky) Supports who offer Garen the CC his Kit is missing. Garen's only real weakness is, that he lacks Gapclose AND CC (Most champs have either one or the other, some have both), while his damage Output and Frontline Abalities are insane. Now pair that with a tanky CC machine like Taric, and the 2 are unbeatable. Other honorable mentions are Nautilus, Blitzcrank, Pyke, Morgana, Lux and Rakan.

Garen's Laning Phase is quite easy to manage. His regenerative Passive Perseverance makes it very forgiving. Depending on if your enemy laner is ranged or melee, you play the lane quite differently.

Against Melee Champions, you can pretty much go ham. Although it recently got nerfed, Garen's base damage on E Judgment is still enough to pick up an early kill or two using your Ignite. Wait for lvl 2 though, you will need your Q Decisive Strike-E Judgment- Combo.

Against Ranged Champions, or generally Champs with annoying CC or dashes it's a different story. You'll have to play safe and farm well before your first back. Trying to engage early is useless when your enemy Gnar just hops back or Xerath just throws an E Shocking Orb at you. After your first or second back, owning the Items Berserker's Greaves and Phage you should be able to just Flash-Q Decisive Strike- Ignite-E Judgment-R Demacian Justice onto your enemy (make sure to land your Ignite before your Q Decisive Strike-Auto Attack hits for maximum damage). If you're heaving trouble, you can always ask your Jungler to help you. Xerath can't stun 2 people at once! The same goes for Azir, Syndra, Fizz, Teemo, Orianna, Lux, etc.
