I PUT ALL MATCHUPS EVEN, SORRY, IT ALL DEPENDS ON A SKILL LEVEL AFTER ALL >,<
all champs are in abc order, just in case.
Aatrox
Relatively easy pre-6. Play for level advantage. Better check his kit, so that you'll understand what I'm talking about next. The edge of his 1,2,3Q crits, so avoid getting hit by the edge. Consider taking anti-heal after 6 (Bramble better ig), but it's better just not to fight in his ult as he can 1v2 you and your jungler if not too behind. I prefer just Q-ing away from him when he ults and wait until it's gone. You can kill him easily when he doesn't have it.
Ahri
You can kill her on aggressive lvl 1. Also before 6 if not eat all her combo + electrocute. She can escape with her R easily. Don't fight under her tower when there are no minions and she has her charm or you're not sure. Ahri players usually get their charm on lvl 3. Keep in mind that her orb deals true damage on its way back, so you won't reduce it with Mercs or Wit's end. However, they have tenacity, and it helps vs her charm and other champions' cc. Her landed true damage will be the most issue. In Tips section I have advice for dealing with true damage.
Akali
dashy flashy
Akali players are very different. She relies heavily on her dashes and the smoke, so that you can't see her and land your E (you'll miss it probably if she's hidden). Try to bait it, as it has longer cooldown than your E. Watch the energy bar. All in if it's low, and if you know she'll dash at you with her E, put your E to stun her the moment she reaches you, or just W her dash. At the start of the game you can take Oracle lense instead of a yellow ward and use it to see her in the smoke. This matchup used to be quite hard for me though first few times :( Still, AP champ so Wit's end is good into her. Her Q is a slow, so Swifties might be your option instead of Merc's
Akshan
Squishy. Dies to all-in. Buy DS if you struggle vs him early. Your Q and E interrupt his hook. He can also escape with his E. You shouldn't underestimate his damage. His R has a very long range. Don't poke him, just all-in after 6 and he's dead.
Anivia
DON'T FORGET THE EGG! (Her passive lets her turn into an egg after she dies. If you won't destroy it, she'll respawn). Your Q goes through her wall. Don't dive her under tower if she has her passive up. Just don't dive her, okay?
Annie
Depends on your skill level, cuz Annie doesn't need skill to kill you haha Her ult with her Teddy is very painful if you're not in a wave and can't Q minions. Play safe lvl 6-9 until you get BOTRK. You can try to kill her pre 6 and I don't think it would be too hard. WHEN SHE IS GLOWING WITH RED SHE CAN STUN YOU SO STAY AWAY. If you're playing Top and midlaner fed Annie, avoid her. You need full MR build to survive her all-in if she's fed, and on top you'll mostly build hybrid or armor.
Aurora
I don't think she's much of a threat. She's quite mobile, so keep that in mind and land you E smartly afer she uses her dash/invis whatever it is (W).
Azir
There isn’t much people who know how to play Azir properly. You cannot kill his soldiers. He is a scaling champ, so kill him early. He also has a good disengage/engage tool, so save E after he pushes you in or out and his ability goes on cooldown. I don’t really have much to tell, as it depends on an Azir. You might struggle from his soldier’s poking though, however he’s pretty weak early.
Cho'Gath
It's actually easy early, but you still can die if overestimate yourself xD
Don't get caught into his Q. Once he uses his Q/E, just take prio. Your waveclear is better, your early game is better. After BOTRK you still kill him in lane easily. Cho is immobile, has a very short AA range.
He will start scaling with R. Punish him early. Can run out of mana fast. Has a good sustain. Dodge his Q (circle with spikes). His R is biggest problem, but thankfully he can't recast it. Also, if he uses it on a minion you can fight him. Mind that he has a lot of slows, so rely on your Qing abillities. Don't make him hit you with AA. After BOTRK you kill him, but eventually he will turn in such a fat tank that you should focus on squishies.
Brand
Magic resist works well, but it's Brand. You can take a refillable potion early to survive his poke. He is a more threat as a support, as he can easily damage several people with one ability. In a solo lane if you kite him properly, you will be fine. Still, it's BRAND. Be wary of his passive, deals a lot of magic through time (Similar to items with fated ashes)
Camille
Do long trades, harder if she has conqueror instead of a grasp. Grasp - easy, you can even fight for prio. Don't fight level 1-5 too much if you're not sure you're better. Level 6--9 she's weaker. A lot of Camilles don't actually know how to play her.
Easier when you know her kit. With grasp she wants short trades. Don't let her poke you down with short trades. Don't be afraid to take prio early and push her under tower as her waveclear is so bad without tiamat. She can poke you with W from her tower tho. If she Es into you early - hold W. If her engage fails and she doesn't have E - she can't escape.
Cassiopeia
Wait for lvl 2 and kill her with landing your E. Try to move and dash a lot as you fight her, so that she misses her abilities. Her ground (W) is quite dangerous though if you won't dodge it. Don't chase her without a minion wave.
Darius
Bad Irelia loses to bad Darius. Good Irelia wins good Darius. You just need some experience with this matchup and be bold with strategy. I don't like this matchup, as it's a lot harder without ignite (I like playing top with TP, but Ignite makes this matchup much easier). Don't die early. Let him push you under tower. Let him crash wave 2. Don't forget to CS. Get lvl 3 first or ~same time. Engage first with stacked passive. He can use jungle camps to Q on them and heal. He can heal only if edge of his Q (spinning) touches a jungle monster or a champion. He CANNOT heal from a minion wave. If you see his Q, Q into him - it will deal less damage and won't heal him. I think I abused word "heal" too much...
Don’t let him get 5 stacks (each of his attack/ability gives 1 stack). You will die if you won’t escape with 5 stacks. You both want long trades - but he’s better in it.
He can recast R if it kills a target. R does a lot of true damage. So don't let your jungler gank if you're low hp and Darius is not unless you want to give him a free doublekill. One of you will die level 2-5. If you are not really experienced, just don't die too much early and keep your CS ok. Also, if your jungler is weak early, he shouldn't start top side if you're vs Darius, Trundle or any other strong early game champ - he can 1v2 both of you. Rare scenario, but keep that in mind. You outscale him midgame if not dying. Dariuses don't like to roam. Mind buying Bramble first if you have no ignite. Even so, all-in him only if you have everything up+stacked passive. You won't probably kill him without R.
---
P.S. There is a little trick against Darius: 99% they will zone you away from first 3 melees. Hide in the alcove, ward the middle bush, and once you see him going to the sidebush, wait until you can Q all 3 minions and then Q into him. With your full passive you can POTENTIALLY kill him lvl 1 if abuse his shorter AA range. Do it at your own risk tho, but it often works if you do it right. SAFER option is to wait until he starts farming, move to your tower from alcove. You will gain exp from melees and he won't be able to run you down like that.
Diana
She's an assassin, so keep in mind if she misses her all in and won't mark you with Q you can engage. Also she gains bonus attack speed for 5 seconds after casting an abiity. Each 3d auto deals bonus magic damage. Try to kill her level 1-2 when she's not that strong. She's vulnerable to CC that can stop her all-in. Anyway, when I face Diana I simply roam everywhere and barely visit my lane because I understand I will probably lose 1v1. It's not because she's a better champ or something. I'm just bad into her lol
Dr. Mundo
You win early, pretty much same as with Cho'Gath. Don't catch his axe, ward to avoid a gank, play for prio. If you can kill him - good, if he plays too safe - crash wave 4, recall and help side lanes, not forgetting about his PUSH PUSH potential. In midgame play for roaming and TP-ing to other lanes to help them out if he plays too safe under tower.
Fizz
Most of you hate this matchup, but I find it fun. Bait out his E (jump) first and you can humiliate him with stacked passive starting from level 1. Level 2 if bait out E and won't get hit with it. Better to bait his E without using your E, or you can simply hold the second one the moment he jumps, but it can be harder to hit him. Just bully the frog early with stacked passive. MR works good.
Galio
It's supposed to be easy but actually hard. I played extremey rarely as Irelia vs Galio, but quite often as Galio vs Irelia, and Irelias I played against struggled. Fight early after he misses abilities(dance around minions to dodge them, especially knockup(E) ). His autos deal 0 damage (except for empowered one). Don't stand under his tower when he has W up (Taunt). Roam if you can before his lvl 6. After his lvl 6 he will roam too, and exactly onto you, crashing you with his R and his teammates. No fun. You need to be good at dodging his abilities to survive the lane, otherwise he'll eventally poke you to death :( Bro has a lot of damage early though+taunt and knockup.
Gangplank
You're fine as long as you don't get hit by his barrels. Try to punish him before 6 with stacked passive, but vs good GP it's close to unplayable as he will kite you to death.
Garen
Uh, well... The point is, Garen players don't think much while playing. You win pre 6 easily. I never lost to a Garen as Irelia, really... I need to lose this matchup at least once to come up with a strategy, but for now you just Q 3 melee minions, Q him and... that's it? Mind his R does a lot of true damage based on missing health. If you W his spinning or just Q it through minions you win. But he will probably silence you before that. I don't think he can outdamage you before 6, and by the time he reaches 6 you must be ahead in gold and exp. Still, he's better in duels. Your AA also have bigger range, you kill him by just kiting with stacked passive.
DEMACIAAAA!!!! (Irelia has a voiceline about it btw haha)
Gragas
Easy vs bad Gragas. You have to get a lead early and not miss it. If he misses E (body slam/stun) you can kill him. Gragas is good into melee matchups, so you need to be good in your Qing around abilities and be always ready to engage/disengage. Rush Mercs. Gragas has big mana issues early, so if you see him wasting it - don't hesitate to wait until he runs out of it and punish him. Just try to punish him early, otherwise it will become a nightmare in teamfights.
Gwen
I think you win 2-5 if she doesn't have ignite. When stripes under her healthbar are pink - prepare to dodge her E+Q(or at least part of it), deals a lot of true damage. If you do, you can kill her. But for some reason Gwen players often waste it too fast, wanting to hit you so bad xd Don't be afraid to fight in her W if she's low. Second Maw of Malmortius if she causes problems (Hullbreaker is still better)
Snip! Snip! ✂️
Heimerdinger
You CANNOT one shot his turrets with Q.
Mid is harder than Top.
Has a strong laning phase and fast waveclear. Don’t fight him in lane or stay too long near his turrets while farming, you will die. The safest way is to farm under tower where there are no turrets nearby. Due to his fast waveclear it’s hard to roam. Once you have everything for a full all-in (r, e and q), he won’t survive. To kill him you must either be not in a lane, or all-in him very fast before the turrets knock you down. His turrets don't work if he's not close to them. Build MR. Heim is really squishy, but his damage is huge. You pretty much can engage if he misses some of his abilities.
After BOTRK you can auto+q a turret. With experience you will see when you can Q a turret, but they are approximately same as melee minions I think.
Hwei
He has great range, but his abilities are easy to dodge. Some Hweis run out of mana fast, trying to get you out of lane, but you kill him easily, as he's completely immobile and squishy. He has some CC though, slow, fear and a shield. Mage, so...
Mercs+Wit's End=Dead Mage!
Illaoi
I HATED THIS MATCHUP WHEN I STARTED IRELIA
so don't worry if you screw it up - it's really hard for new players. Even a small mistake can make it unplayable. Don't let her push you under tower. You have to fight for wave advantage and push push push. With stacked passive it's easy to win her if you take prio lvl2-6 with faster AA. Level 6-9 play safe until BOTRK+antiheal. I buy Mortal Reminder always second vs her, it lets you 1v1 her midgame even if you miss E. Lategame she wins. Countering her is actually simple in words - Dodge her E (pulling out a tentacle). It has a short range and easy to dodge once you see the animation, or hide behind minions. If she DOES hit you with E, a certain range appears, and if you leave this range, you get slowed by 80%, new tentacles spawn around you and slam slam waaah everone dies panic tentacles everywhere!!! So... don't leave this range. Buy antiheal, especially after 6 if you plan to stay in lane. But it's actually quite a hard matchup cuz your powerspikes keep flipping during the game, and she deals a lot of damage with her all in.
Jax
Oh no worst Irelia counterpick gg wp ff15, no. You have all the tools to defeat Jax. There are two ways - depending on what he does. If he is not trying to zone you - get prio and play like a psycho with no self-preservation instinct. Dodge E tho. I swear, most Jaxes (in low elo) won't expect such boldness. Lvl up Q first. Clear his first wave and first minion of 2nd wave as if your life depends on it. If you maintain it over him and push him to the tower hardly he can do anything. if you reach level two first, if you weave AA onto him between hitting minions - you beat him. After that let him push and don't fight unless he's really bad.
If they zone you - then yes, lvl up E, you sit in a sweet spot under tower, waiting for a gank and farm patiently. But if you have a possibility to take prio - take it. As long as you dodge his E early - you win. I'm not saying it's an easy matchup - but if you stay patient and calm - you win if estimate the situation correct. He's a better duelist, but it's hard for him to 1v2 you and your jungler. After 6 he wins 1v1 if has R.
Kassadin
Easy pre 6. After 6 is okay if you not get caught in his all-in. He can easily escape you with ult, as well as engage. All-in champ, usually buys Malignance first to spam ult. His ult is a dash that does damage. He will die to your all-in if you bait out his ult first, or hold your E.
If he plays safe early try to roam. His waveclear is relatively slow early, so you will have enough time after crashing the wave.
Played vs him very rarely as Irelia. But late game he destroys everyone.
Katarina
Easy vs bad Kata. Good Kata can outplay you. Don't get hit by her dagger and don't walk near it if you're not sure you can stun her the moment she appears. AP champ so Merc+Wit's End/Malmortius. Malmortius better, as you don’t really need tenacity vs her. You can E or Q her to interrupt her ult. Ult does a lot of damage, just in case. SPAM PING WHEN SHE ROAMS Katarinas love to roam. 99% of games they do it and snowball. Teammates that don’t react on pings are more dangerous than Kata. She relies on snowballing and don’t let her have it. You can tell if she plans to snowball by looking at her items. She will try to snowball if buys Dark Seal first.
Kayn
He won’t do much to you in lane.
Just make him permarecall or die. On his ability cast, reply by chopping half of his hp. He scales when damages enemies. If he's in a lane vs you - Kayn will turn into Rhaast. But by that moment he wil be so behind that it won't help much...
Hold W after ~2 seconds when he ults. His ult is longer than W charge, so you need to press it a bit later. Played vs him top only twice ngl. However if he knows what he's doing he will probably rely on roaming and invading your jungler with his jungler, but it’s just a guess.
LeBlanc
Depends on LB skill. Don't let her deceive you(and stun)! Respect her damage and don't let her all in you. You can kill her lvl2-4 I think. A good LB will drive you mad eventually and is a nightmare if fed. HER PASSIVE SENDS A CLONE IF SHE'S BELOW 30 % HP SO DON'T CHASE A CLONE.
Lulu
Yes, I played vs Lulu midlane. She does unexpectedly high damage early tbh, but she's still immobile and you win easily, just don't overdo because you think it's a support. But you obviously win 1v1 lol
Lissandra
Rarely played vs her. Don't let her all-in you. Build tenacity 100%. That’s it…? Her all-in is really bad for you. Well- it’s bad for anyone tbh. If she sends a hand, she can tp to it, so don't stand near. But you can poke her down before 6, I don’t think it will be too hard.
Lux
Annoying at the start. Don't let her root you. You can actually kill her early game if she misses her root, but you may struggle early game. Once you get 1-2 items, you win 1v1 easily and destroy her in a second. Wit's End and Mercs will make it significantly easier, but her root+ult can chunk a lot of damage. Dodge her abilities by walking to the side/towards her, as Luxes usually throw their E on max range (and it's big). You caaaan buy QSS, but...it's not worth it, only if they have another 4 CC champs that annoy you.
Malphite
Perhaps you will kill him once early, perhaps not - probably not. He won't kill you. Has TERRIBLE mana issues if he spams abilities. He can't farm without his abilities. Ward enemy jungler's path, he's good in teamfights, and it's easy for enemy jungler to gank you. But you should play for sidelanes.
You can take DShield and Resolve Page with revitalize+second wind to survive his poke, but it's not super necessary.
Also mind taking +9 adaptive forcce in runes instead of +10% AS as his E cuts your AS.
Malzahar
Gives you false confidence. Super easy pre 6. You stack your passive on his little void minions, gaining gold, damage, mobility. He has a passive magic shield, so if it's up, you can't stun him with E, (he will still get marked though), but you can destroy the shield by magic damage(your W, R, E). I usually start with R or W when all-in him, it destroys his shield and you can stun him with E, so he won't run away. After 6 it's...sad. His ult suppresses you, deals a lot of dmg and has quite a low cd, especially with items. Try not to 1v1 him when he has ult. But he's super squishy, especially early.
Mordekaiser
Before 6 - hehe 😁
After 6 - absolutely no hehe 😦
He outscales you SO HARD it hurts. He must be really bad and so behind for you to win after 6, but there is really not much you can do. You have to snowball it and punish him real hard, dodging abilities, maintaining your lead. If you lose early - gg.
Mel
It's okay. You win early game if not get poked down. Can be very hard if you're new tho, as until you manage to get to her, you will be 50% hp down already. Engage if she used up her E(root). She is a counter for immobile mage/adc. Her W reflects projectile spells (Irelia's E, R and maybe W) They all don't do much damage and she often won't have time to react on your E if you land it fast enough or surprise her. Mel’s W has a very long CD early game. Her shield lasts 3 seconds. You can bait it easily, by landing first E and if she uses her shield, wait until it’s over and stun her with second E (Happens rarely, needs super precise timing, as you have 0.5 second window to land second E, considering that Mel Ws the same exact moment you E1). Even if she's fed you can destroy her once have Wit's End and BOTRK. Be careful of her ult, once her passive mark above your champ is red, her ult executes you. If you dodge her root, you can all-in her easily and it's a guaranteed kill as she's immobile and all-in dependant.
Naafiri
A little bit harder after rework but still OK. As an AD assassin champ, they’re quite easy pre 6, and you can Q on puppies (rip puppies :c ) to stack your passive. You can W her all in, and the earlier the game the weaker she is. If she’s a problem, Death’s Dance+Sterak’s Gage.
Nasus
Three rules:
1. Don’t fight in his E (circle on the ground)
2. Don’t fight in his R (big glowing Nasus)
3. Don't let him touch the wave and punish hard for approaching. So don't clear the wave too fast.
If you follow these rules you’ll be fine. The earlier the game - the weaker he is. You can beat the dog in all ways possible. Nasus doesn't want to 1v1 you early. Leaving him alone to scale and farm is a grave mistake. You need to punish his weak early game and not let touch minions without chopping half of his HP. Otherwise once he hits 6 he will destroy you and your team eventually. But ngl, a good Nasus will stack Q anyways, you cannot zone him from all the minions, so try to play for your jungler, proxy if plan to roam, invade enemy jungle, play for objectives on toplane.
Late game is tough, so avoid 1v1 if you’re not sure about his R. He's very strong with ult, and can get a penta even if he's two items behind.
Neeko
My second main ✌️Neeko has a high skill ceiling, but average Neeko is not much of a threat. Neeko is squishy, but usually builds rocketbelt first, enhancing her mobility. Neeko has a great root and can hide among minions, so be careful. Her R is hidden if she's not Neeko. A good Neeko won't let you approach her and keep poking. Wait until she has no root/ult and all-in. You kill her 1v1, but be careful of her in teamfights. Her root and ult will make it much easier for enemy carries to kill you. Don’t chase her if she uses W (sends a clone and gains move speed), you can chase the clone accidentally or waste your abilities on it. Her clone actually has plenty of uses.
Nilah
Tip in case you didn't know. Her W (she coveres herself in blue smoke) makes her immune to all coming AA and gies move speed, it has a very long cooldown though, and if she uses it next to a teammate, he'll be immune to AA as well.
Orianna
Theoretically it’s easy, practically not really. She’s great at poking, so be careful of her ball. Plus, Orianna players are usually OTPs. You kill her easily if she won’t poke you down sooner. Overall an easy matchup once you get used to it.
Sett
Lvl up E first. He will want to fight you the moment he sees you and is good at chasing.
Don't overextend. He has relatively poor waveclear before tiamat, so you want to stack a wave under your turret. If you push too hard - you're dead.
Your q goes behind champ’s back, so if you see his W, immediately q him, but mind that he can flash behind and still hit it.
He has a short AA range so if you kite him properly and use range advantage you can kill him early with E and AA if he misses his E (pull towards himself+stun). If you go equal in CS and kills, play for teamfights, as he can beat you up eventually if you're not too respectful. Normally Sett wants you to be in his AA range, so each of his combo starts with the E pull. If he missed it, you win if play not too bad. Extra points if you manage to land your E before his E. It works surprisingly often. You place E1 in bushes or somewhere he can't see, and land E2 the moment you see his e animation. It's easy to land and will make his E somewhat useless. If he Es your Q - you're dead.
Mind taking Resolve page with Bone Plating.
Shaco
Try to use E or R before Shaco ults (send a clone). This way, original shaco will be marked, so you won't mistake him with a clone. Same with Neeko and Wukong btw.
Tips for identifiying Shaco clone: Shacos usually send his clone in front of him - so the one closer to you is usually the clone.
Second, if you do unusually large amount of damage - it's a clone. But mostly it comes with experience as you know how people move.
Smolder
Easy-peasy. However, he will probably play super safe and fly away when you E, so roam. Scaling champ, you can kill him early, and later on as well if he keeps playing safe. Still, be careful late game, as he will start dealing true damage.
Soraka
Yesss, Soraka mid! Most of them don’t know what they’re doing, she can’t heal herself except with her ult, and she has only two damaging abilities out of four. One is a slow, second is a Silence, and if you stay long it becomes a root. Immobile. Build Anti-heal if none from your team did it, as Soraka would heal her teammates a lot in teamfights.
If she actually knows what she is doing, she will play for her jungler, so ward and be aware of it.
Sylas
You must not mess it up. If you do… well, don’t. You have to snowball or punish him severely early game for his missed skillshots /mistakes. He has long cooldowns early game, so if he misses his stun or any other ability he’s dead if you engage IMMEDIATELY, so be confident and act fast. Buying Executioner’s after first back makes the lane SIGNIFICANTLY easier. You die if he lands all his abilities. You kill him lvl2 with full passive+landed E. Watch his stolen ultimate. He deals quite a lot of damage, so be respectful. Dodge E, especially second E.
Syndra
A game vs Syndra is a chaos, with randomly flying orbs and purple explosions. She can disengage you, so try to bait her stun before going all-in, or do it in front of her minion wave, so that you can dash back to her through minions. Or kill her before she uses it by poking with q(closest minion to her)+AA+q away=)
Talon
Ok, so, AD assassin. Very strong early game, so be careful. If you don’t die from his all-in, you kill him easily. If his all-in fails, you kill him easily. Especially in mid-late game. He can escape with his E and R, so don’t dive him under tower. If Talon is not fed, he is no threat later in the game, as he won’t be able to one-shot anyone. Just play careful early game, or get the help of your jungler and you’ll be fine.
Teemo
Friendly reminder to swap yellow ward to Oracle lens so that you’ll see his mushrooms (and also him in invisibility) and won’t die while walking through the jungle. Also, if he blinds you, hold W if you can't Q away. Teemo will AA you after a blind probably so W can reduce some dmg. You still can E, R and Q him while being blinded, though. To kill him, you have to all in fast when you know his blind is down. He's vulnerable to all-ins, so wait under the tower until you sure you can do a full combo. If it fails - well, gg. Test your limits with all-ins and through time you will know when to engage and how much damage you will deal. But remember: before six if you are qual in hp and his blind is down - you win. After 6 make sure you don't get into mushrooms.
Thresh
If you place a ward on top of enemy Thresh lantern, his teammates won't be able to click on the lantern and be saved by Thresh.
I hope you know what to do with this information😈😈😈
Tristana
It’s just not fun but annoying. DShield first item. She can stand behind your minion wave and not let you farm, then throw a bomb and chunk your hp. Wow. It's the rare case when I usually level up W first, then Q and E. (with usual leveling up later). If she doesn't let you farm, then wait for the wave by the tower, W it with full charge and finish minions with AA until you get lvl 2 and Q. You still kill her if she won’t jump away or push you away, or kill before you even approach. You can stun her in with E in air, btw. Don’t let her snowball. If you feel like you can’t kill her, farm safely and search for kills on other lanes if it's possible. It depends on a Tristana honestly, most of them are easy to run down lvl 2-6 tho. But honestly, I don't know how to play vs a good Tristana.
Trundle
Very strong early, good split pusher. You need to know your limits. Pretty much same as Darius where you can fight level 3-6 with full passive while staying under tower. Mind taking Ignite/Bramble Vest/Executioners first. Has a lot of slows and heals. Trundle will force you to fight him in a long trade, so try to chop his health gradually. But fighting him lvl 3-5 is abosuletly posible and you have all chances. But if you're too messy... You won't stop him - he will destroy you and your towers.
Vel'Koz
I WASN'T EXPECTING THE DAMAGE-
(played once vs him on mid...no. I think you have to get used to it but...I don’t want to get used to it.)
(all-in champ, don't eat his abilities and calculate the trajectory. Immobile, you kill him early until he starts spamming his abilities each 0.0001 second. Overall your all-in kills him I guess. Boots of Swiftness are better into him than Merc’s IMO. Merc’s give tenacity, and it does nothing to his airborne. You need to dodge his abilities and slow, so Swifties are better. Швидкі ноги пи3ди не получать.)
Veigar
The earlier you kill him, the better. He has less than 20 armor on lvl 1, no mobility. You need to be careful of three things while playing vs Veigar:
1. His Cage blocks dashes, you can’t Q out from it, don’t even try. I usually walk in circles, it makes it harder for him to land all parts of his genius combo.
2. His R. You can’t help it. You just die. It’s not a skillshot, he just clicks on you and a magic ball flies into your face, dealing significant damage. It probably won’t one shot you, but it can finish you, especially late game when it deals more that 1k damage based on missing health.
3. His late game. Veigar has an unlimited passive. Each time his ability hits a champion he gains AP, so imagine how much AP he’d have further in the game. He’s still squishy, though. You can try Maw of Malmortius, by the way, or any item with spellshield (Edge of the night), but it won't save you. Just all-in him sneaky-sneaky and thats it.
Vex
If the Vex is average, you will lose early game if try to fight her, however you will smash her mid game. If Vex is good, she will continue smashing you. Vex is an anti-dashing champion that applies gloom(Vex’s next attack/ability deals additional dmg) the moment you use a dash. Telling you as an Irelia not to dash would be strange, however, you can wait till BOTRK land an E, get full stacks and try to kill her unless she fears you. Don’t worry if you die to her early, just keep your cs above 5, get a BOTRK, dodge her abilities and you’ll be fine later. She has a fear, once a red bar below her health is full, her next ability would fear you. She's supposed to be a hard matchup, but to be honest I never struggled much vs her. Probably because she's picked as a counterplay by people who have no clue how to utilize her kit.
Viktor
Relies on his stun and damage. If you all-in him fast, he will never survive, especially later in the game. Haven't played vs good Vikor yet, so hard to say.
Vladimir
Take prio. Easier when you know his kit. If he’s in the puddle don’t chase him - he's too fast and the lane on mid is short. Bait it before all in. When he uses Q, bar under his health becomes white, when it is red - run. His Q will be empowered, healing him and dealing more damage to you, so don’t stay close when it is up. He scales with HP, his passive gives him 1 AP for each BONUS 30 HP, so he’s stronger in late game. Go ignite if you want to kill him early, or buy Anti-heal, wait when he uses up his puddle and kill him. If Vladimir is good, anti-heal won't help you - he will find another way to heal himself. At first this matchup is kinda hard, especially if you're new to Irelia. You have to learn to land your E invisibly and outsmart him. That's fun once you get it! But still, quite complicated if you're new.
Yasuo
He’s stronger than you in late game. Kill him lvl 2-3. Never fight him lvl 1. Yasuo has a very strong lvl 1 and quite weak lvl 2-3 compared to most champs, quite paradoxical, but it is as it is.Never all-in him without baiting windwall first. If he’s not blind, he’ll W your upcoming E or your ult. Your E cooldown is shorter than his wall, so you have a window to kill him before he uses the wall again. Overall, a skill matchup. A bit harder if he has lethal tempo. Don't forget that both Yasuo and Yone are item and farm dependent. That's why they both outscale you in late game if you don't snowball.
Hasagi!
P.S. (you can actually fight him lvl 1 if use your AA range properly and start with E)
Yone
Harder with lethal tempo, but easier than his little bro. Heavily depends on damage, if you won't snowball he'll outscale you fast. His E(spirit form) also has longer cooldown than your E. Try to kill him level 2-3 if he misuses E, and don’t fight lvl 1. Still, because of lethal tempo it may be harder, so don’t overextend if you’re low on hp or mana and can’t escape through minions. They often dodge your E by returning back from spirit form, so just Q away or AA when he’s engaging with his E. Bait his E before all-in. If he has a Q3 up(whirlwind around him) very often he will use E+Q3, Yone players are very predictable. Get ready to Q to the side, stun him with E and kill. It needs some skill and reaction, so don’t worry if you can’t do it first time. If you know what to do - you will get it through time.
Sidestep or Q away from his ult.
His ult and Q3 can let him go through walls - just in case.
Don't forget that both Yasuo and Yone are item and farm dependent. That's why they both outscale you in late game if you don't snowball.
P.S. You can buy Serpent's Fang vs him. It destroys shields, and Yone's W+Immortal shieldbow give him a lot of shields.
Zed
Akali and Katarina mindplay with holding your E until you know he’s about to arrive behind your back, but he's easier as an AD assasin(your W soaks more AD than AP. If you hold W the moment he ults, he'lll deal literally 0 damage). He’s not that scary as seems to be, you have the tools to defeat him, especially if his all-in fails and he’s not fed. Fed assassins in league is a nightmare. When you see him ulting, land one E, hold W to decrease his damage, and land second E when he arrives. Perhaps you won’t get it the first time, but don’t worry! He’s also squishy. Like very squishy. If you won't let him snowball, he won't do anything later in the game. If your jungler helps in kiling him couple times early, then he's no threat. Zed is useless when behind, but a good Zed will find a way out, so be careful.
If Zed is a problem, but Death’s Dance+Sterak’s Gage. Or Zhonya mwahaha (don't tell anyone I said it)
Ziggs
At first it can be hard, especially if you don't know his kit. He can disengage you and throw bombs in a wave, not letting you Q on minions. Easier to kill in early game. If you manage to get to him he's dead, but Ziggs usually try to stay as far as possible, as he prefers ranged fights, throwing his abilities from afar, so roam or all-in him from behind.
Zoe
Late game she has a lot of damage, especially with dark harvest, but killing her early is not too hard. It really depends on a Zoe, as it's quite a difficult champ. OTPs can be hard to deal with if you’re bad at dodging skills with Q. Don't get hit by her drowsiness ball!
Zyra
You one shot her plants with Q :) Step onto seeds to destroy them. She relies on her root, so if Zyra is good she won't let you close to her. If she misses her root (shooting a line of a green plant), then you can engage. She's dangerous in teamfights, as her ult is big.If she doesn't let you approach her, push the wave and roam.
Zaahen
You win early with stacked passive and poking him with minion Q + AA but he’s a lot better in teamfights/long trades in duels and outscales you later, he killed me with an item behind in late/mid game :3 It’s hard for him to stack his passive early, so try to punish it. Anti-heal is ok vs him. Need more experience cuz the champ is barely out.
Irelia
I decided to add some champs in synergy, so that if you have them in your team, you will know how to fight together using your kits.
Amumu
Amumu has plenty of stuns and his ult is an AoE stun. He's super useful in teamfights, so if you see Amumu engaging a fight - it's a good chance to win. His Q (throwing a bandage) can be done twice.
Ashe
Her AA slow enemies. You probably know this but anyway. If her ult is up, you can bait an enemy so that Ashe can land the ult, as it's global. But like... you need to coordinate with your team. Her E is a good vision tool, you can ask her to send a hawk somewhere you need. If Ashe is behind, her ult, slows and vision are still kinda useful.
Cho'Gath
Early Cho is a kitten and will probably stay on his lane, but after 6 he will be becoming better and better tank, and the further the game the better tank he is. Try to walk near him in late game so he can peel and distract. He deals nice damage now as well tbh
Darius
If enemy: He has one of the strongest lvl 1 in the game. He can push your toplaner to the tower quite fast, so you can try to roam on top lvl 2-3 to help your toplaner or die haha (not funny.)
Karthus
His ult is global. You know it, but don't forget about it when a low hp enemy manages to escape - Karthus can finish him. Ping the enemy in case Karthus hadn't noticed.
Kindred
ALLY KINDRED: If you can, ward enemy camp with her mark on. Kindred will say thanks.
ENEMY: If you're playing vs Kindred, ward your jungler's marked camp if you can. Your jungler will say thanks haha
Neeko
Neeko's clone has plenty of uses - checking bushes, blocking projectiles, triggering Caitlyn's and Jinx's traps. So, if Neeko's W is up and she's nearby - she can save you. Or not :)
Nilah
I already wrote it in threats, but I'll copy here: If she uses W(covers herself in blue smoke) next to you, you will also be immune to AA.
Renata Glasc
If it's a good Renata you won't die with her in your team. Renata is picked super rarely, but it's an amazing champ. Stay away from enemies when she ults. Once her ut reaches the enemy, they gain 100% attack speed and go berserk - automatically attack nearby champion, prioritizing their allies. It's super fun to watch tbh, but if you're the closest to an enemy, you can die :( Her W gives attacks speed and move speed towards an enemy. If the ally gets a takedown on an enemy champion, the buff duration resets. If the ally would die while W is still active, their health is set back to full but they begin burning to death over 3 seconds. The ally can stop the burn by getting a champion takedown before they die. Seriously, why nobody plays Renata?

Hello! I’m just another EUNE/EUW LoL player, who has been an OTP Irelia for a while. I decided to make a guide, as she’s an incredibly fun and rewarding champion to learn. The more you play her, the more crazy moves you can come up to and surprise your lane opponent. If you’re a beginner to league or Irelia as a champ and struggle to win the lane, I made a guide for you!
In case you have any questions about playstyle/itemization/matchups let me know in comments :3
Disclaimer:
I did this guide based on my experience. I change my playstyle very often, and encourage you to experiment as well! Not all of the tips might fit you, but perhaps you'll find some useful general tips =)
Disclaimer #2:
I know that perhaps I overexplain stuff here, repeat myself often and not use shortcuts much. I tried to make this guide as begginer-friendly as possible and explain things the simplest way, so that it will be easy even if you just started League. Also, I'm not teaching how to climb as Irelia (Spoiler - she's very difficult to climb with). In this guide, I'm trying to make this champion a bit easier for understanding, so that you can have fun and enjoy playing in first place!
📝 My silly lil' notes&updates
UPD 01.01.2025: Happy New Year everyone =) I'm so happy that more than 20k people already read my guide. You can't imagine how happy I am each time I see a new vote or a comment xd
I promise I will keep updating it! Thank you all💖
UPD 19.07.2025 Hello-hello once again! I've noticed a 100k views here, so I decided to overcome my fear and play toplane to extend this guide. Toplane tips and matchups are still WIP kinda, but don't forget to check updates in "Game plan" and "Wards" =)
UPD 24.10.2025 It's guide's birthday! 🎉 A year ago I carried a game first time in 100 years and decided to enlighten people with my 'huge' Irelia knowledge xD When I just started League, I always had one old MOBAfire guide under my hand and tried to apply all the concepts in my games, failing again and again. That guide became outdated long time ago, so I tried to structure here all the knowledge I got through years. I genuinely hope that it helped some of you and made your games a bit less insufferable, just as that guide helped me once. I'm also learning new things about the game, and sharing it here makes it easier to remember. Anyways, I hope ya'll having a great day and wish you luck in games!
✨Some shortcuts, if you're new to League or MOBA games overall
Proxying: farming between outer and inner turret to clear the upcoming wave faster and to avoid loss of XP and gold if not using TP (used only in toplane). I usually walk from downwards (image)and not straight through their turret.
.. (assuming you are blue side)
Choose top if you prefer long fights with outplays. I saw many people recommend playing Irelia top to understand champ mechanics better, so I started from top as well. It's painful when you are new. Irelia has more hard matchups on top (like Jax, Sett, Illaoi, Tryndamere). It's not correct to call these matchups "hard", they are interesting but you need to actually outplay and be creative. Overall in LoL top is a hard lane. It's a lane where a better player wins. And if you're new to Irelia, you won't be a better player. You have to manage your waves properly, and not get dived eventually. You also don't get much ganks as any other lane. Your build will be a bit tankier than midlane. Good news - you don't need to be a mechanical god to win a lane on top most of the times if you understand your matchup well, know wave management, level up timers, ward spots and when to push. I'm in progress of updating this guide for top, as it's a very interesting lane in it's own way. And just in case, climbing from low elo as a toplaner is easier if you're actually better than your opponent :)
MID:
Mid is for those who prefer fast all-ins in a second. This lane is less punishing, giving you opportunities to roam and farm faster. Ability haste and less tankiness is a better build here. Plus, on Mid you can built literally all the weirdest builds you want, while on top it's better to stick to a standart one. After playing really long while on Mid, this lane feels too short for me now. But at the beginning it was nice! Also teaches you not to be scared of tower shots and diving. Playing on Top after Mid feels much smoother, especially in a micro-mechanics way, comparing to first games there. Back to Contents
ABILITIES
If you played Irelia you probably know her abilities. Still, I'd like to shortly explain her kit, so that tips and combos would be clearer.
Passive: Ionian Fervor
Most of your damage comes from this passive, as you get Attack Speed and bonus magic damage on hit. It has 4 stacks, you get 1 stack for each enemy champion hit by an ability.
This is the mark you need to use wisely. Enemy champions and large monsters hit by Flawless Duet and Vanguard's Edge initial barrage (Not marked when walking throught it, only when you hit the skillshot!) are marked as Unsteady for 5 seconds. The mark can be consumed by Bladesurge.
Q: Bladesurge
*Irelia spams Q everyone dies lol* no. It's not how it works. Your Q resets only if you kill a target OR if you hit a marked enemy. Use it wisely, I will explain it in tips. Your main farming and early passive-stacking tool.
W: Defiant Dance
Don't think of it as your damage tool, but a defensive one. Use it to survive an all-in, painful skillshot, tower shot, or to do some damage to several units in front of you. You can also farm with it, to prepare minions to Q all of them. When you hold it, you can see a bar below. Defiant Dance deals more damage after you relese the key after the bar fills on 50%.
E: Flawless Duet Irelia sends a blade to the target location for 3.5 seconds, which can be recasted. Once the two blads are placed, they stun all champions in the line for 0.75 seconds and mark them. It also reveals an enemy for a short period.
R: Vanguard's Edge
Deals magic damage, also reveals enemies and slows them by 90% for 1.5 sec. Gives a mark to recast Bladesurge just as Flawless Duet.
~
As I already said, you probably played Irelia, or at least know how her abilities look like. I just mentioned some details that you could've missed, without precise timings, cooldowns, mana cost, range etc. Back to Contents
WARDS and OBJECTIVES
Warding is simple and helps you prevent ganks! if you take look at the map occasionally, of course...
- Blue spots are places where you must have vision if you're blue side. Red spots the same, but if you play red team. Green spots are places where you must have vision AFTER YOU BREAK THE FIRST TURRET if you're blue side. Orange spots the same, but if you play red team. Yellow spots are places where it's better to always have vision, no matter the side. Consider putting the ward in a river, not in a monster's spawnpoint - it's important if they plan to gank you through a river. You still can see if they are doing a buff, dw.
-
TOP
~~~~
If you hard push opponent under tower lvl 2-3 (which you normally want to do on Irelia) you want to put a ward on their jungler's way. After Voidgrub spawn, ward a river. On a river ward a RIVER and not a buff in case their jungler is planning to gank you before doing a buff.
MID
~~~~
During your laning phase (0-10min) on ~1:05 put a Stealth Ward on the jungler's path. (On a blue spot if you're blue side On a red spot if red). It makes spotting enemy jungler much easier, and you will have a lot more time to predict his gank.
It's more helpful for Voidgrub ward for a toplane though.
Each dragon killed by your team grants a stack that gives a bonus depending on the type of a dragon. Each new dragon spawns 5 minutes after previous one was defeated. After one of the teams receives a Dragon Soul, Elder Dragon spawns, which grants Aspect of the Dragon when defeated.
Infernal Soul - deals some AoE damage when hitting enemy.
Mountainous Vigor Mountain Drake
Gain 5% / 10% / 15% / 20% (based on stacks) armor and magic resistance.
Mountain Soul - after not taking damage for 5 seconds, gain a shield.
Oceanic Will Ocean Drake
Restore 2% / 4% / 6% / 8% (based on stacks) of missing health every 5 seconds.
Ocean Soul - Dealing damage to enemies heals you and restores mana.
OTHER BUFFS
Voidgrubs and Rift Herald
If you play top, Voidgrub is very good for Irelia and gives great split push potential. Each grub gives your whole team extra damage against structures for the rest of the game. Rift Herald charges an attack and does big damage to a structure. You can recast its charge if it destroys a structure.
Atakhan and flowers
Shortly - in game you collect red flowers. Each flower gives a stack - ~0.75 Adaptive Force ( attack Damage for Irelia), and also some experience - all petals collected buff the whole team. Killing Atakhan awards you 25% bonus experience and 25% bonus Adaptive Force from each stack.
Baron Nashor
Helps destroying structures. Gives some AD and AP, but the main point why it's needed is to push the lane and destroy as many structures as possible. The buff is lost on death.
That's my favorite chapter! As an Irelia, you always learn something new about playing this champion and outplaying your opponent. this guide already became my personal diary...

HOW MANY GAMES I NEED TO MASTER IRELIA
HOW MANY GAMES I NEED TO MASTER IRELIA
Based on my experience: Irelia was the first champ I spammed when just starting League (since lvl 20 I guess), not even knowing what is BOTRK,CS,QSS,Q3 and I had to google those terms lol and I had no idea how to play this champ properly. If you have understanding of MOBA games or played League before, you will need much less time, of course. But starting as an absolute 0 and upgrading to a decent level(not going 0/5 each game lol), I needed ~150 games. I still have games where I'm behind, but when you play with your team and are good with a champ, you climb out throughout the game eventually, exploiting enemy weaknesses. But it's okay if you struggle when you just start Irelia! However, Irelia is a very rewarding champ with high skill ceiling, and one could never master her fully. Through time you will notice how you automatically dodge skillshots with Bladesurge and dive opponents under tower. There is no certain tip for that, it's just practice and learning limits of a champ. =)
HOW TO PLAY STARTING WITH E FIRST
HOW TO PLAY STARTING WITH E FIRST
Yeah I promised to explain it here. IF YOU START WITH E FIRST: Use it ONCE before level 2 and try to poke enemy with AA if you manage to stun him. Don't use it when your xp bar is more than ~80%. Your opponent will probably push you to the tower by that time and have a lvl 2 already. That's okay! AA some minions, reach lvl 2, and take Q. I must warn you that you have quite a small window to kill your enemy before he reaches lvl 3. Most midlaners are weaker than you lvl 2-5, so the moment you both are lvl 2, play aggressively.
Why I like it: 1. The opponent is already near your tower, forcing him to Flash your engage or die. Also it's the timing when your jungler can gank you. 2. you don't get too close to him -> not poked too much. 3. Your E is more useful in invades than Q. 4. Your opponent would expect you to take Q first.
It's kinda troll, but if you get annoyed by mages then why not.
On top you want to level up E first in hard matchups where you can't get prio.
IF YOU STRUGGLE AGAINST MAGES
IF YOU STRUGGLE AGAINST MAGES
It's actually not only about Irelia, but for any melee champ on mid. Your lvl 1 is quite weak and you don't have a range advantage. A mage can stand behind a wave and just poke you with autos, forcing you to the tower (that's why I take E first). However, you level 2-5 as a melee are kind of a powerspike vs a mage. If they don't respect it, go for an all in, better right after they waste their abilities.
IF YOU STRUGGLE AGAINST A CERTAIN MATCHUP/WANNA TRY NEW COMBOS
IF YOU STRUGGLE AGAINST A CERTAIN MATCHUP/WANNA TRY NEW COMBOS
Most of you forget about practice tool with AI. In Practice mode you can add a bot, and there are a lot of champs you can add as your opponent (not all, sadly). They are not perfect and it's clearly AI, however if you wanna have an approximate view of their range/damage, or learn to dodge abilities with Q (Veigar's Cage) you should try it out! Or if you struggle with farming it really helps. Plus, it has a control panel just as a solo practice mode.
IF YOU ARE SUPER BEHIND&TILTED
IF YOU ARE SUPER BEHIND&TILTED
I wrote this chapter right after having a game of 1/8/0 on min 15 and without a Blade of the Ruined King, so I know what I'm talking about cuz I also started playing Irelia first time once I described a perfect scenario, or an average one, when you get 2-3 kills by min 10 etc and get an item each 10 minutes. But sometimes we struggle and that's okay! If you know what to do.
1.Farm.
You have to farm, ignore everyone and everything, don't fight for obectives or participate in random teamfights if you are not 10000% sure you will get something out of it (you probably won't). You are too weak to have any impact there, and you will probably just die again. So search for empty lanes, if you see their team somewhere, don't go there even if your team does. You won't gain much. It's very controversial, and most people would rage and ping you, but trust me, it's the best you can do. While they fight, you can even push a lane and get a tower. Cool!
2.Build DMG items.
Many new players think that if they die too much they should build raw armor/hp items to survive. Nah. When I'm behind, I farm like crazy for a Titanic Hydra. It's a perfect item that would give you as tankiness, as dmg. ONLY after Blade of the Ruined King never ignore it.
3.Make plays with your team
Fighting together always deals more damage. If you fed your opponent (it happens! Player skill levels are different, so don't get upset) ask bot/jungle/top to help. Of course if they're tilted as well it's a trouble, but there should be at least one decent person in your team. If your opponent is not TOO fed, you can kill him in two. About stealing kills: you normally want to play around your strongest teammate. However if it's you - your team should understand that you need gold. They won't be mad if they understand it. Kill stealing is not always a good thing, of course, but sometimes it's necessary. That's why you ask for help. Another option is to roam. If you see that your bot/top is stronger than enemy's, or are equal, roam to get a kill/assist and push a tower. This third tip is very controversional, to be honest, and highly depends on your team. Also, ping before roaming. 4Use macro (you won a lane but something went wrong in mid game)
I'd lie if I say that I'm good at it, almost ZERO I'd say(you got it? got it? no? Okay...)
HOWEVER the main idea is to think before doing a play. Yes-yes, thank you mr. Obvious. However you probably noticed how often you lose a game even after winning a lane? Because you get lost in mid game. How to fix it? I don't know :3 Each case is different, but perhaps some of general tips might help you.
1 - After destroying second turret make plays on other lanes. If you overstay there will be nothing much for you to gain. Irelia has a great splitpush potential, but you should solo push ONLY if you know where their team is, or at least strongest members of enemy team. You don't want to be caught alone on a lane 1v3.
2 - If their jungler and ADC is dead and yours are alive - take Baron. This opportunity is missed so often T-T
3 - Don't stop CSing! Don't do random fights in mid-late game without your engager! Irelia is NOT a good engager unless there is 4 people you can catch with ult! Do not die stupidly! BE PATIENT. Wait for your team, ping them, they can't read minds. Even if one of your teammates who is NOT an engager randomly rushes 1v5 and then flames everyone - it's his problem. Don't follow him to die 1v5 as well. Wait for CC from your team. Kinda like that...
HOW TO DEAL WITH TRUE DAMAGE
HOW TO DEAL WITH TRUE DAMAGE
True damage - type of damage that ignores all other forms of damage reduction to deal pure damage directly to someone, meaning no matter how much armor and MR you build, you will receive same amount of damage. Ignite does pure scaling true dmg. Some champs that deal true damage are:
TEST EACH SETTINGS CHANGE IN PRACTICE MODE FIRST
Due to endless bugs in Riot Client, some setting might randomly be canceled or not saved, so check them before starting a match! If they work in practice mode, then it's okay.
If your settings reset each match
If your settings reset each match, try: 1. Go to "Riot Games\League of Legends\Config" in your explorer. 2. Find a file called "PersistedSettings.json" 3. Right click on it 4. In the menu choose "Properties" (on the very bottom) 5. On the very bottom of "General" menu (it opens defaultly) see if "Only read" is UNCHECKED. We need it to be UNCHECKED so that League can push changes in settings into this file.
Auto attack
Gameplay → Auto attack
On default it's enabled, but disabling it is better. Basically, when disabled, your champ will not attack nearby enemies if you don't click on them.
Spells Level Up
Hotkeys → Abilities and Summoner Spells
Default keybind is CTRL+Q/W/E/R, but I use Alt+Q/W/E/R. Choose your preference. Leveling up skills on a keybind is crucial when you lvl up in the middle of the fight.
If you have GeForce Experience installed
By the way, if you have "GeForce Experience" installed on your PC, it has a default overlay keybind Alt+R, so disable it in "GeForce Experience" settings first to be able to use in League. If not disabled, it will show statistics of your CPU and GPU on top right corner.
Show Advanced Player Stats
Hotkeys → Menus
Default key is "C" and I like it. It lets you see your AA range when holding it.
Player Attack Move Click
Hotkeys → Player Movement
Super cool! Lets you walk and hit at the same time without clicking on your enemy with a mouse. It's very important when kiting melees, as Irelia has big AA range for a melee champ, and you can use it to cheese lvl 1. Btw, to see attack range of your champ you can either hold "C" or click "A".C works only if held, while A shows AA range when you click it, but disappears once you click smth else.
Target Champions Only
Hotkeys → Abilities and Summoner Spells
When you're fighting in a wave, it's very easy to press q on a minion instead of a marked champ, or the other way round. What I like to do is to bind "X" key to "toggle champions only". Bind it to a comfortable key ("X" or "V" for example. Or alt xD). So that each time you hold "X", your champ cannot attack minions, ONLY champion. After releasing the key, everything is normal. Once you get used to this setting it becomes much more comfortable to play, so try not to forget it and learn to play with it. IMPORTANT Check in Game → Gameplay → "Treat Target Champions Only as a toggle"DISABLED.
While playing Irelia, if this setting is on, it can ruin your fight completely, so make sure this setting is disabled

NOW FOR THE SHORT TIPS
(they are not short anymore...)
1. Don't rush kills. If you feel like you can't fight your opponent then don't, and prioritize your income, even if he baits you. Farming and your cs is much more important than kills. Irelia has a great waveclear and is one of the best cs-ers. It's a part of her design and her kit, so don't ignore it. Your cs must be higher than 6, otherwise you won't be able to use Irelia potential. If you go 0/0/0 for 15 minutes but good cs, you'll still be very strong with items and the gold you gained. Plus, you will learn to kill a minion with Q faster, which can be useful in fights, and I'll tell it in next tip.
2. Minions are your mobility tool. When you get a Blade of the Ruined King you will be able to one shot caster minions. Bladesurge heals you if you kill a minion and stacks up your passive, so you can q onto caster minions between AA-ing your opponent to gain health and confuse your enemy.
3. You can use you W Defiant Dance to clear minion wave faster, or to prepare a wave to single-Q all the minions.
5. You can land both of your E on an opponent, clicking them straight on the enemy champ. Works well if adc and support walk too close to each other, your E hides between them, letting you stun both.
6. Use Q on lvl 1-3 only to stack passive when you're about to engage. It's easy to run out of mana if you spam it too much, so try to finish minions with AA if you're not planning to engage soon.
7. DON'T HIT ONE MINION WITH AA. Hit each of the minions with 1 AA, don't stand in front of a single minion and auto attack him. That way you will manage their health evenly, making dashing between them with Q much easier. When you use a combo, you must understand that it's always better to do with minions nearby, so try to stack 1 or 2 stacks with your Q before full engage.
8. After marking a champ, never use both Q on him at once. Always save second Q to
a) escape
b) catch him if he flashes/dashes/runs away.
9. E and R mark a champion. Always try to use a mark with Bladesurge before placing a new mark with next ability. So that you can recast q 3+ times instead of 2.
10. 200iq move: you can throw your R behind you while pretending to run away, hit a champ and do a combo. Trust me, it's fun.
11. IF YOU ARE ClOSE TO YOUR OPPONENT Don`t use your q after stunning enemy with E, use auto attacks, and Q him only when he starts running away to chase him down.
12. If you lose early game, go 0/2 by min 10, that's okay. Your mid game is strong, and if you're good you will climb out easily. I had plenty of games with terrible early game, trying out new playstyle, but it's all figures out to min 15-20. Try to do unexpected ganks on botlane with Vanguard's Edge+ Flash combo. (use flash right after you click R), or if there is no such an opportunity - simply farm and get tower plates while your opponent recalls or roams. Don't forget to ping your lane if the enemy is missing, perhaps he is roaming. On toplane I always take TP EXACTLY for roaming. I stay on top only if I'm winning my opponent real hard. If you are worse - help mid, bot, use your tp offensively.
13. Defiant Dance release animation can hide your E if you place it right after releasing your W.
14. Defiant Dance reduces very little magic damage, so if their team/your lane opponent is mostly AP, max E after fully maxing Q. Use Defiant Dance to reduce minion health in that case or to do some damage.
15. Your Flawless Duet and Vanguard's Edge reveal enemies. You can use it for an escape in the jungle. Q Bladesurge cannot be used in unseen targets, but can be used on revealed ones. If you are escaping through a jungle, you can blindly land E on a jungle camp and Q on it, dashing quite a good distance, letting you escape. Don't forget that Vanguard's Edge can be used defensively as it also slows the enemy. If you don't have an E but have R and it can help you jump through a wall and escape - use it. For example on a gromp, throw R into a wall, it reveals a gromp, you Q on it, get over the wall - live. Not a common example tho. I think I did it with R only once.
16. If you stand right next to the wall and press Flash in the middle of the wall, you will get over the wall. (i explained it terribly sorry). You can use it for an unespected gank, pressing Vanguard's Edge and Flash over the wall. It can be tricky at first but it's super cool, so try it in practice mode!
17. Try not to stand in a minion wave, so that your opponent would have to waste abilitis either on you, or the wave, and not both. Bladesurge has enough range to reach a low hpminion.
18. When landed, two blades of Flawless Duet travel to each other and stun once met. Thus, they will travel faster if placed near each other, so that they will have shorter animation and quicker stun.
19. When you dash with Bladesurge you can cast E or R mid-Q. I thought it's a useless tip, BUT NO it's super cool once you handle it. Needs some training and mechanic. Your opponent is distracted by your dash, and often cannot react in time to your E or R. HOWEVER it works if you have stable high fps and ping.
20. I will write it again - if you place a ward on enemy Thresh's lantern, his teammates won't be able to click on it. It also works with Blast Cone - if you place a ward on it, enemy won't be able to blow it up and escape/engage.
21. Friendly reminder: your E is a stun (wow). Treat it like a tool to STUN and not as your Q resetter. AA with stacked passive are very strong, and you treat your Q as a mobility tool, and not a damage one. I remember losing a lot of trades simply because decided not to engage because of missed E. It is absolutely normal to Q on your opponent and THEN stun with E. It can save from an unexpected gank in the middle of your engage, you can quickly mark a nearby jungle camp with E to escape with Q through the wall. So yeah - your E is not only a Q resetter, but a tool to stun.
22. I should've put this tip higher, as it's pretty important, but I forgot :P
It's important to AA enemy champ between Q. Why? To maintain passive stacks. When you hit enemy champion, tower or a jungle monster your passive stacks refresh, so you won't need to stack them again.
23. It's a tip for all champs in the game. If you type in Google "LoL dodge game" you will find many free minigames to help you in some basic game mechanics. For example: skillshots, dodge game, farming etc. HONESTLY never tried them myself, but check out if you want :)
*one of the links* --- *second link but it requires downloading*
24. Watching Challenger OTP replays won't make you significantly better. Some things that work in high elo won't work in Iron 4, yes, live with it. Watching coach breakdown of plays is better. Also, when learning a concept, try to fix only on this very concept for the whole match. For example you find it hard to CS on a lane and mix it with trades - try to have a game where you focus only on farming, and then gradually mix it with other aspects. It's learning - don't expet to jump straight into ranked game and carry. To become better you need to learn things gradually - it's faster and clearer. Our brain is lazy, and when you play a lot, it switches to autopilot, making you act reflectively without thoughts based on your previous decisions and mechanical memory. But gameflow changes all the time and you can't always rely on your automacy, especially when you're not a pro with billions of games behind your back, so try to set up a goal for youself each 30 seconds, asking 'What is better for me to do now'.
COMBOS
Honestly, I'd recommend watching a video on youtube with all Irelia combos, they are not hard, just need some mechanical practice. Actually, Irelia has an insane amount of combos using Bladesurge, so consider them as SUPER BASIC ones. I will try to comment each of them and when to use it. All these combos have variations, so it will depend on your situation, as Irelia is not a simple all-in champ - she has much more outplay options rather than pushing three buttons in a row
Easy:
1. + AA +
Basic poking combo. You have two low hp minions, the one is further from you and second one is closer. Q on further, AA your opponent and immediately Q to the second minion.
2. landed + + AA
You land your E and kick him kick him! Use first Q to get into your AA range, and save second Q to catch him up. Basic lvl 2 combo with a probable kill. Don't forget, if your E hits a champ, you receive 1 Ionian Fervor stack, next Q give second stack. By that time you must have all four stacks, so before engaging get 2 stacks from two minion killed with a Q.
Average:
1.1 + (on a minion) + 2nd + + AA +
Let's break it down a bit. You have to land your first E in a bush or somewhere where your opponent won't see it, Q on a minion to get closer to an enemy, use 2 E to stun him, Q onto him to get into AA range. Never use two Q at once. Save your second Q if the enemy will dash, or run away to chase him.
2. 1st + + + AA + 2nd + AA +
Basic all-in combo. Never use second Flawless Duet right after using R and without consuming the mark with Bladesurge.
3. ++ + AA + land + AA + + AA +
I never thought it would be that long lol
It's not that hard as it seems, and don't be scared of the Vanguard's Edge+ Flash, it's much easier to execute and almost impossible to miss the timing. This combo is used when you are outside of your midlane, as Flash+ Vanguard's Edge takes a lot of room, and your opponent would flee under the tower.
Useless Flex:
Hard:
+
It's hard to execute in practice mode, and even harder in real game. You will probably get the wrong timing and flash after using w. I learnt this combo from Irelking to never use it in an actual game. The point of the combo is actually hiding your Q animation in W animation -> killing opponent with Q -> resetting the Q and letting you escape back into minion wave if you are using this combo to dive opponent under the tower, for example. It probably needs quite a skill level to do it properly and get a kill. So, you don't need it as a beginner. Better to learn it after you get a good grip on mechanical moments on Irelia. It is really good to finish low hp opponent, not letting him escape, but again - you must be sure you will actually finish him and that you won't mess up the combo. Back to Contents
GAME PLAN
(If you don't want to play ranked, play draft pick normal. Don't play Irelia in swiftplays. Minion scaling is different there and you can't one-q-shot caster minions after Blade of the Ruined King. I was bullied on reddit for this question so I decided to make my own investigation and yes, the problem occured only in swiftplays. Plus, matchmaking in swiftplays is usually worse than draft)
Early Game (0-15 min)
Don't poke too much without stacked passive. Try to get a kill on lvl 2-6 if you land your E Flawless Duet and stack your passive. You can get a kill later, but your opponent would probably be trickier to deal with. Also, try to stay as healthy as you can (no way Sherlock), general rule for ranged matchups.
Detailed
Your level 1 is strong with stacked passive. Still, I won't advice taking too much fights lvl 1, as if you're beginner Irelia, you'd often miss your q without killing a minion, putting it on a quite a long cooldown (11 seconds on lvl 1). Don't worry, we all were in same boat, it becomes easier with practice. Last hitting minions must be your priority. Always prioritize gold over anything. Kill gives gold? Get a kill. Can't get a kill, but have an opportunity to farm? Farm. Level 2-6 are important. all you need to do is to kill 2 minions with your q Bladesurge, (2 stacks of passive), land your E on a champ (third stack) and q your opponent (final stack). This damage would be more then enough to destroy most of the mage, or make them use a Flash or force to recall. Basically, if you're playing mid your jungler would help you in getting more kills. If your lane is empty, you can gank botlane if you have ult, keep farming if there is no other opportunities or recall. Try to match recalls with your opponent. If you're low on hp and mana and see that your opponent uses Teleport, push the wave under his tower and recall to buy Blade of the Ruined King components. When you have TP it's much easier to manage your recalls.
TOPLANE WAVE MANAGEMENT and LEVEL-UP TIMERS (miniguide)
You need to be a little more experienced here. Irelia waveclear lets you get a prio super fast if you utilize your kit. On toplane getting prio will let you win even the most unfavorable matchup if you stay healthy enough, of course. Getting experienced with level up timers and wave management isn't hard, even though it soounds scary, i know :) I'm still not a super pro at it and update it, but it's fun to learn!
So, let's start ~~>
MINIONS
The most important waves on top are first 4 waves - normally you want toRecall after it. If you know what Cheater recall is - you don't need it on Irelia. It was good more than a year ago, but not now. Minions spawn at 1:05 After that, they spawn each 30 seconds, arriving to top lane takes them ~25 seconds. Each regular wave consists of 3 melee and 3 caster(range) minions. Melee minions give more xp than casters. Cannon wave appears each 3 waves before minute 15, then every second wave, then every wave but you won't really be watching it so precisely, trust me. Minion xp range is ROUGHLY your screen. Meaning if you see a minions on your screen - you will get xp from it. But it's ROUGHLY. Don't make CSing your one and only goal - trade! Chunk enemy HP! Beat him! Abuse him! ahem-
So there is a little table of MINIONS APPEARING ON YOUR LANE to visualise it better:
Now a table how many minions you need to gain xp from to level up:
lvl 1 → 2: 7 minions (1st wave + 1 minion from 2nd wave) Considering that melee give more XP, to get lvl 2 you can get 5 minions of 1st wave and a melee minion from the second wave, but consider it as a fun fact and not something you can use each game. lvl 2 → 3: 12 minions (two waves) + 2 melee lvl 3 → 4: 3 waves + 3 melee + 1 caster
It's hard to keep an eye on all these waves if you jump straight in a match, so try it in practice mode - to feel the timer, to watch the waves. Rememeber that minion movement is mirrored - enemy's wave is in the same spot as yours.
LANING
The general rule in S2025 is that you want to crash wave 2 as clean and as fast as you can. Crash wave 3 and 4 if you manage to play aggressively and the enemy farms under tower. Wave 3 and 4 crash depends on a champion, but with Irelia you usually want to do this thanks to your fast waveclear and strong early game. After wave 4 you usualy want toRecall to fill up with hp, mana and get some items. After recall always use a Teleport. When available,TP to your wave - not the tower. Minions do a lot of damage to each other, if you won't TP you will lose a lot of exp and gold. Of course there are cases when you can just walk back to lane - for example if you killed your opponent who doesn't have TP, recalled and your wave is in a favorible position, or if you proxied. Then yes, you can avoid using TP, but in most cases you want to get to the lane as fast as possible. In midgame+ if you got a prio over your opponent or not too far behind use your TP. Don't sit on your lane all the time. I love TPing all over the map and use it to arrive in best places to help my team, use it as your extra mobility tool for map control. This is something you learn after playing Mid - treat Top as your home which you visit occasionallly, but don't forget to check what's going on outside xd
Let's take three examples- when the enemy is stronger ( Trundle, Darius, also applies for ranged), when you're even or the difference isn't that big (pretty much most of matchups)and when he's weaker early (scaling champs, Nasus, Dr. Mundo, Kayle).
1.1 When you have a hard matchup (melee)
Each 'bad' matchup can become a 'good' matchup if you take a prio. I explained some of them in Threats. If you don't want any crazy outplays, a usual scenario is: your opponent stands in front of a wave - you can't come up to it, as you will get beaten, zoning you from xp. Darius players love to do it. If they don't- feel free to take prio CAREFULLY. However, if zoning happens, best you can do is stay in a sweet spot under your tower - the melee minions are barely touching the rim of the turret's range. It makes your enemy gankable and lets you farm safely. You will get a level later than your enemy, but if you do everything right it should be +- equal level up timing. You can also poke him with AA meanwhile. Usually those 'hard' matchups are hard only in first 3 waves. One of you will die level 3-4. The biggest weakness of Irelia counters is that they underestimate your early game and don't really know how to play their 'counterpicked' champion, thinking that they beat you without even looking at the screen. Yes, you need to try harder to win, but if you have enough practise and knowledge of a matchup it becomes easy. Abuse their ego, mwahaha
1.2 When you have a matchup vs ranged
Ranged champions want to poke you down while staying as healthy as they can. Bushes are still your best friendsand you can draw minion aggro closer to the bush. Same as with hard melee matchup - stay in a sweet spot under tower, carefully chunking their hp. If you both have 30% hp - it's your favor. Ranged champs are squishy, and once you Land E and Q up to them they cannot do anything but die. Mind taking Resolve secondary rune ( Revitalize, Second Wind or Bone Plating in subrunes?? how is it called lol) and DShield first item. It's not necessary but will make your lane a liiiitle bit easier =)
2. When a matchup is equal
You just play for prio. Equal matchup means that a better player wins here. It's easy to understand what to do if you are better - push him under tower and get a gold and exp advantage. But what to do if you lose? Depends on a champion. But if you lose a lot of xp, gold and cs it's not good. In laning phase you can exploit their weaknesses, and still get back. You can take a look at your difference in gold and cs - if it's not too big and you are not too behind, don't hide under tower - you still have a chance to get back on track!
3. When a matchup is easy
Basically means they sit behind a wave/tower and farm ultragigasafely. BORING! WE NEED BLOOD! Try to kill them, or they will smash you after 6 or later. If they keep stubbornly sitting under their precious turret then just zone them from XP and CS. If you manage to do it, their scaling will be ruined and they won't smash you later. Yippee!🎉 You can also proxy when against these champs as they will hardly try to stop you - otherwise you will break their face, and they understand it. If you don't know what proxy is, check the Shortcuts spoiler in Introduction section =)
Mid Game (15-25 min)
You're strongest in mid game. Roughly you have to get a new item each 10 minutes. After you get Blade of the Ruined King roam, get kills. If you see half hp ADC under their tower- feel free to dive. Dive squishy low-health immobile champs. If you destroy midlane tower, roam to bot and help in getting objectives. If you are behind and doing pretty bad, try to farm anywhere you can, except your jungler's camps lol. You deal quite a damage with Blade of the Ruined King only and the second item usually gives some sustain if it's not Kraken Slayer. Don't participate in random jungle teamfights if you're behind (only if you're sure you 100% benfit from it). Farm and play helping and pushing winning lanes. It's more a tip for a jungler, though. If you have tp, it's much easier to get to an empty lane when you see a group of enemies on the other side of the map, and clear waves there. You gain gold from minions and also a probable tower. When you're too weak, ignore teams pings, as you won't do much st this point. Your goal is to have 2 finished items on min 20 and cs 7+. That's when you have enough sustain and damage. Your kills and CS must be in balance. Both are equallly important. You need to understand the strength of your enemy, when to fight and the possibility of winning.
Late Game (25 min+)
You are strong, but there are champs that are stronger( Veigar, Nasus). baron buff and destroyed inhibitor counter Irelia A LOT. By that moment the game turns into ARAM (and it has to, after Baron spawn on min 20 you have to push your winning lane with whole team, prefer mid), so participate in teamfights and don't wander around aloneif you don't want 1v5.
Try to walk with a teammate who has CC. Your team will prbably be pushing a lane 5v5, s you won't getn too much minions to stack on. You can mark 5 champs with your E and R, but it's not easy not to accidentally waste your Q on an unmarked champion when they are standing close. Misclicking Q is probablly the most painful thing on Irelia, but one of the basic skills to learn. Back to Contents
IMPORTANT NOTES
Thank you for scrolling to this section, as I do think that these notes are probably the most important reminders for all LoL players, even though I was not planning to include them originally.
IMPORTANT NOTE #1
When you start playing League, you're always bad. You cannot be pro at anything, each skill requires time and patience. I've seen plenty of new players being flamed and reported for low skill or weird moves, even in quickplays. You can never hide from that, only by disabing chat, which is quite a good option to be honest(in low elo ppl don't usually write important stuff there) If you enjoy the game and really want to learn playing a champion and TO HAVE FUN, then nobody must ever take that away from you. Games are created to HAVE FUN and not to compete (unless you're planning to be in T1 I guess?). If you feel like you're doing bad or getting tired from a certain champ, and I'm not talking about Irelia only, take a rest, don't play League or switch to another role or another champ, and return to your main some time later. It's okay if you start off well, and your next games become worse. Don't worry, just take a break and have cookies ^т^
IMPORTANT NOTE #2
I was not actually planning to cover it in the guide, but I think it’s a really important reminder to all of you. League is quite an addictive game with the climbing system, passes (BP) and so on. I’m not a Challenger or a Pro player and I don't want to,as I'm just enjoying occasionally playing league in the evenings with friends. However, if you have the smallest doubt that you start to miss something in your real life, please, close the game and rest, without playing for a couple days as a starting point. I know it might be hard, but I believe you’re strong enough to do it. People tend to underestimate this problem, however it can be quite serious and destructive, leading to irreversible consequences. I had this experience, and I don't wish anyone the same. Doing sports, hobbies, walking outside and spending time in real life with your friends and family are precious and much more rewarding. Video games are made to have fun, and not a way to escape stress or reality. Don't let them become a drug you spend too much money and time on. Thank you so much for reading up to here, I hope you will keep my words in mind, and stay strong in this tough world <3
Thank you for reading the guide, hope you enjoyed it. Please, in case you have any questions, edits or you want me to add another matchup, let me know in comments! 🍪
