Alright, this is a skill match up even though Darius doesn't take much skills. You do have to play smartly or you will get dominated. I recommend building defensive items first. I like going Sunfire Cape and then into a Quick Silver Sash. Why QSS? So I can remove her ult and destroy her so that she has no chance for making a comeback.
Lulu
Just survive the lane. That's your goal unless the Lulu is really bad.
Dr. Mundo
Easy early game. Zone Mundo from creeps and force him to farm with Q. If he goes in, just do the standard combo of Q - Apprehend - AA - W - Move and AA (Repeat multiple times) for harass or a kill.
Illaoi
Illaoi is a pain. She will out sustain, out damage, and out range you. Her ultimate will demolish you so just run out of it as fast as possible. Avoid her Qs and destroy her tentacles. If she misses her Q or W, go in right away for the chance to harass her.
Jax
Should be a pretty easy lane for early to mid game. If Jax decides to use his stun on you, just pull right as he stuns you. It should give you enough time to recover from your stunned state to W him or chase after him even if he jumps.
Kayle
Be very aggressive during levels 1-5 and try to score a kill before Kayle hits 6. After 6, you have to start building tank to survive Kayle's damage output so that you can demolish her. Prioritize magic resist and movement speed.
Ekko
Ekko is actually really annoying. He can kite you pretty well besides the fact that he is melee. If he E's in with his W, do try to avoid the stun or you will take massive damage without returning any. His Q will be really annoying so try to avoid them. His ultimate completely negates yours if used properly
Kennen
Pretty similar to Lulu. Just survive the lane unless the Kennen is really bad.
Malphite
Black Cleaver rush. All you need to know.
Gangplank
Pirate captain here will outrange you and poke you to death with his Q or barrels. Your only hope for winning this lane is being able to close the distance while avoiding or surviving all of his damage. Definitely need mobilty rush in this case.
Riven
Similar to Fiora. This is a skill match up and you NEED to build defensive items first. She will out damage you if you try to go offensive and will destroy you. A good Sunfire Cape and Ninja Tabi's will allow you to face her equally.
Irelia
Irelia is tricky. Since she is a mix of all damages, though mostly physical and true, she will start to out damage you in the mid game. Your goal here would be trying to kill her before level 9 where her damage, mobility, and sustain start out scaling yours. Going tank is generally the safer option, but going bruiser is applicable as well.
Gnar
Gnar has a short attack range, so make sure to take advantage of that. Pay attention to the spells he use and the cooldowns of them. You can duel him while he is in Mega Gnar form, but make sure to avoid him ulting you into walls or into his tower. Mobility rush is a priority here.
Jayce
If there were more red bars here, I would make it a higher tier of difficulty. Jayce will completely demolish you. Build tank and just survive.
Garen
Surprisingly, he is a pain in the buttocks. He has a higher defensive capability than you and can take more punishment. If he starts Q to silence you, move back to kite him into your minion wave and fight there. Also, try not stand in his spin to win damage. It hurts a lot. If he takes ignite, be wary of a sudden execution from 300 hp with his level 1 ult.
Nautilus
Easy lane. You out damage and out sustain Nautilus. Make sure to go in after his E or Q is down. The shield from his W can be easily broken since most Nautliss' max Riptide (His E). Be careful though. He has lots of crowd control and can set up easy ganks for his jungler. So vision control is very crucial here.
Nasus
Easiest lane ever...Rush Black Cleaver since he will be rushing Ice-Born Gauntlet. Zone him from farm. Freeze the lane and let it push naturally. Ward at the right time to allow you to play very aggressively.
Maokai
Maokai is a tree. You have a big *** Axe. Enough is said. Follow similar procedures from the other tank notes.
Poppy
Poppy is incredibly tanky, incredibly mobile, and has lots of crowd control. The good this is she is close range. You are a mid-range melee because of your Q. You should be winning this lane unless the enemy jungler intervenes. Black Cleaver and mobility rush is necessary.
Olaf
Olaf does a lot of damage. Almost comparable to yours. Do not try to fight him early unless he makes obvious mistakes because he will destroy you with his axes. If you can properly kite Olaf while avoiding axes, you'll be in good shape. I prefer going tank against Olaf. It will allow you to stand up against his damage output and dish out damage back to him.
Lissandra
She will kite you. You will be crowd controlled. Magic resist rush and mobility is a priority here. If you Apprehend her at the right time as she tries to E away, her E will be canceled and allowing you a possible kill or flash. Most cases, you won't be able to kill her so just farm the lane.
Quinn
SURVIVE THE LANE! BUILD TANK!
Renekton
Renekton has a very similar kit to yours. He will out damage you, out sustain you, and has higher mobility than you. You have to build tank if you want to have a chance to win lane against him. You out scale Renekton so just play the game slow and safe.
Sion
Should be an easy lane. Sion is very immobile and that just makes you more effective against him. If he tries to Q you, just Apprehend him and get close...like REAL close and remember to keep moving between auto attacks. Do be careful of his passive or you may give a kill after you kill him.
Shen
With the new rework, Shen has a lot of dueling potential now. Avoid his Q or else you'll take a lot of damage. If he dashes, you can negate the dash with your E. If Shen uses his W, then just your Q and move around to wait out the time.
Trundle
Trundle negates your passive with his Q. He can destroy you if you aren't playing careful. You have the range advantage though. So use it to zone him from farm and harass him where he can't chomp on you. If he does his combo on you, just do your best to run away then kill him when you return to lane.
Tryndamere
You should win early game. Build tank. Don't let it go to late game or else you're screwed.
Volibear
Volibear can easily be kited by you. If he tries to run at you, make sure to land your Q before he flips you. Start running back to your tower, auto attack as you do, and you should out damage him. Try to activate his passive before you go for the all in or else he'll survive your damage and probably kill you.
Wukong
Should be an easy lane. If Wukong E's you, just Apprehend him and W. He'll probably clone and you just Q for free damage because he'll most likely be in your Q range.
Ryze
Magic resist and health is a must here. You won't be faster than a Ryze, so no point in rushing mobility. Make sure to pay attention to the stacks on his passive. The moment he either uses his passive or he lets it reset, go in since that would be your best chance to try and kill him. If he has his ult, be wary of his burst damgage and kill potential.
Rumble
Rumble is quite hard actually if he knows what he is doing. He will just kite you with his E and W. If you pull him, he'll just use his ult as a counter measure. Make sure to rush magic resist and mobility.
Darius is a powerful top laner who has massive 1 V 1 capabilities, crazy damage output, and gives you that satisfying feeling of dunking your opponents for a penta kill. He was once banned in almost every game because of his powerful kit in worlds. Though he was tweaked a little bit, it doesn't change the fact that Darius is a dominant lane bully. While there are many good things about Darius, he still has his weaknesses as a bruiser with no gap closer or hard crowd control which makes it easy for people to kite him. Nonetheless, you probably already knew that and came to this guide for some knowledge on how to improve your Darius play or maybe you're just interested in taking a dip into the world of dunks.
Runes
Runes
The movement speed quints are very important. In the current meta, MOBILITY is the most important stat in the map for early game. It allows you to maneuver around the enemy jungle, support your own jungle, invade the enemy's jungle, roam to mid lane and apply pressure, and as well help you dominate lane. A lot of top laners currently will be focusing on mobility as well. As you already know, Boots of Swiftness is generally the first or second item bought because of its cheap price and resourceful utility. Mobilty on Darius allows you to harass your lane opponent while not losing any ground doing so. Your kit naturally synchronizes with a lot of movement speed, so use it your advantage.
Masteries
Masteries
Forget Thunderlords on Darius. Grasp of the Undying is your best friend. For one, you aren't going to be building that much attack damage (and hopefully not AP) on Darius. So the mastery is sort of wasted on you. You will most likely be building tons of health items and that scales well wtih Grasp. 3% of your maximmum health for, let's say around 3.5k, is a 105 hp stolen every 4 seconds. That's a lot of health stolen and can easily turn the tide in a battle. 0/12/18 is generally the optimal mastery for Darius as you are able to last hit better and recover missing health from the Cunning tree and become more durable from the Resolve tree.
Items
Items
For the most part, the items are pretty self explanatory. Just look at the notes I posted. If you have any questions though, just comment.
Spells
Spells
Now, the only unique thing you should know about Darius's' spells is his E ability, Apprehend. Apprehend, if timed right, can stop enemy dashes (SUCH AS SHEN'S TAUNT, SHY'S ULT, WUKONG'S E, RIVEN'S THIRD Q, LEE SIN'S SECOND Q, ETC) and prevents them from completing their animation, thus avoiding anything dangerous and giving you the upper hand. This requires a lot of practice and timing, but will often turn the tides in battle.
