Introduction

Hello, everyone.

This is just a quick WIP guide with all the best builds as well as some tips and tactics to complete onslaught mode.

The Guardians and their Roles

Lulu - Your goal is to stick with the ADC, boost them with your spells as well as CCing all the annoying champions, such as Kog'maw. Provide Damage when needed to voidling waves, but never leave the side of your ADC.

Janna - Your goal is to provide shields and CC when needed, mainly to the carries since they can benefit from the added damage the shield provides. Howling Gale away the Voidlings as well as keeping the Skarner, Cho'gath, Rek'sai and Kha'zix at bay.

Lux - Your goal is to clear the voidling waves, as well as provide damage and cc to major targets, such as Kog'maw or Vel'koz. Lux's toolkit makes her an excellent kiter in the case where a Large Cho'gath or the Boss will chase you.

Jinx - Your goal is to focus the champions, including the high priority Kog'maw and Vel'koz, as well as damage the boss. You could also clear waves with Fishbones, but only when you really need to. You need to be protected at all costs, so stick with your support/utility.

Poppy - Your goal is to tank and CC as many champions as possible, as well as kite the boss and Cho'gath. Stick with your supports for heals, and you will be an unstoppable force. Make use of Steadfast Presence to block the dash abilities of Rek'sai, Kha'zix and the Boss, as well as Keepers Verdict to either setup a wombo combo, or to knock away the Large Cho'gaths or cluster of Void Champions.

Soraka - Your goal (unsurprisingly) is to sustain your team, especially your carries. Keep yourself alive with Starcall, and use Equinox to block the Enraging Kog'maws and Vel'koz. Don't overheal, or you will die, especially in the later stages. Focus on dodging abilities, and damaging the voidling waves.

Ezreal - Your goal is to provide as much damage to the champions as possible. Your kit makes you able to kite most champions, and your Trueshot Barrage serves as a voidling wave clear tool. Remember to chase after the high priority targets, such as Vel'koz, Kog'maw or the Boss.

Ahri - Your goal is to provide damage to the Void Champions as well as clear the voidling waves with your Orb of Deception and Fox-Fire. Your kit enables you to burst down while kiting specific champions, ideally the high priority targets (Vel'kox, Kog'maw).

Miss Fortune - Your goal is to provide as much damage as possible to the champions, as well as clear the voidling waves occasionally. Make sure you are clear of possible CC before lining up and casting Bullet Time. You don't have many escape tools, so stick to your support/utility.

Syndra - Your goal is to provide voidling wave clears, and burst down the high priority targets, Vel'koz and Kog'maw. Combo your abilities together to nearly one shot a Void Champion, as well as kiting with Scatter the Weak. Save Unleashed Power for the High HP/Big Void Champions.

The Darkness and their Tactics

Voidling Waves - Not a big threat. They will always charge straight towards a specific champions. Can be ignored, but never let the swarms get large enough. Champions with AOE abilities such as Syndra, Ahri or Lux will mainly be tasked with clearing these swarms.

Shield Worms(?) - Can't do anything to their chosen Void Champion unless you take them out. Not alot of health and they will always follow behind their chosen target. Clear them away easily with 2-3 attacks.

Skarner - One of the easiest Void Champions to deal with. Their task is to charge a specific champion with Crystalline Exoskeleton, then use Impale to peel your fellow Guardians away from your team. Honestly, not a big threat, bar when you are on the moving zone level, in which case you NEED to get rid of them.

Cho'gath - A rather annoying Void Champion. Their task is to walk in a single direction and cast Rupture beneath them, knocking the Guardians up. Not a huge deal, but beware getting chain CCed by them. It can cost you the game. They walk slow enough for you to kite them.
  • Mega Cho'gath - These ones do the above but in a larger area, plus they will select a champion and slowly charge towards them. If they get close enough, they will Om Nom Nom! you. Basically, its Tahm Kench's Devour, but it deals damage overtime instead until you die. Never let these things get close to you. Kite them away and deal damage to the other Void Champions.

Rek'sai - Their job is to tunnel straight towards you, knocking you up and to deal damage, before repeating the process. Large health pool and consistent damage requires you to kill them when you can.
  • Mega Rek'sai - These ones do the above, but additionally they will telegraph their charge attack and will send all of you in one area and knock you up. The charge can easily be dodged so not much of a greater threat. More health than your regular Rek'sai, but still.

Kha'zix - They will target a single champion for the rest of their lives. They will walk up, Void Spike, Taste Their Fear, Leap over the target and then go Invisible. Not a big threat if there are one or two and you are with your team. However, don't let these ones accumulate into greater numbers. Also, beware going alone. If you can't deal with one or two Kha'zix on you, retreat back to your team.

Kog'maw - These ones are high priority targets. They will stand still "Enraging" for 3 seconds, after which they will attack the closest Guardian, dealing tons of damage, until they either die or the Guardian leaves the "Zone" that they create. Any form of CC (Root, Silence, Stun) will disable their attack and they will have to enrage again. Kill these ones ASAP.

Vel'koz - The number one target. They will spawn, move a little bit away from the Guardians and then fire Plasma Fission consistantly across the ENTIRE MAP attacking the furthest available Guardian (or in some cases, in a straight line if there are 5-10 of them). Their bolts are slow, which gives you enough time to dodge them, but they chunk away at your health if too many hit you. No passive trigger as far as I know. KILL THEM ASAP.
  • Mega Vel'koz - These ones are a right pain and need to be focused first at all costs. They will target a single champion (or in a single direction if there are 3-4) and fire Life Form Disintegration Ray chasing them for around 5 seconds, before they "cool down" for 5 seconds. Use hard CC or silence to interrupt the beam, and focus them down. Note: Generally all the Mega Vel'koz will fire their Beams simultaneously. KILL. THEM. ASAP.

The Boss (Rift Herald) - This one is a challenge and requires you to work as a well-oiled machine. Note the 30000 hp bar on the top of the screen and the ticks on the red bar. They will be explained below.

The attacks are as follows:
  • Slowly follow the nearest champion and auto attack. They will continue to follow this champion for a while, or until hard CCed.
  • Telegraphed Charge - Dodge out of the way to avoid being piled into a corner with any Void Champions in the Charge and knocked up.
  • Bullet Hell - Her attacks are telegraphed as she will start to spin in a 540 degree circle firing bullets at you. This attack hurts like hell. Use the pillars and light posts as cover for this attack. I highly DO NOT recommend Flashing over this attack.
  • Summon Void Champions - After an aforementioned tick of damage to the boss, she will summon a random selection of Void Champions. Ideally, you will want to clear these adds before proceeding to further damage the boss.

The Maps and how they work

There are 3 major maps in this mode.
  1. Large map with Bridge in middle.
  2. Medium map with 3 Fountain in middle.
  3. Long Road.

The maps will either be using the entire map or (will) be restricted to a spherical zone. The exception is the Long Road which will be a moving zone.

As you progress through the 7 rounds (8th is boss round), there will be more and more unique wave designs that will spawn during each round. Best example I can come up with is the Long Road where at later levels 9 Vel'koz spawn at the far side of the map and shoot linearly down the road.

All I can say is try to memorize each wave for the future. There are not that many different configurations. Also, the 7 rounds are randomized.

General Stratagems and Tips

  • As you will notice, there is a debuff called Fading Starlight. This is what will slowly increase in potency as you progress through the stages to the boss. That's why it is important to dodge attacks and take as minimal damage as possible.
  • Focus the Highest Priority Targets as best as possible.
  • Stand on top of a dead person for 3 seconds to revive them. Only revive if you are clear or in a pinch. When you revive, you and the resurrected will gain a 2 seconds of invulnerability. As the round progresses, the amount of health you gain from revives will diminish.
  • Remember your roles. Have someone dedicated to voidling wave clears, Void Champions, Boss, and Support/Utility.
  • Kite as best you can. The last thing you want to happen is get chain CCed to your death.
  • You have 3 attempts per round, including the boss wave. Do not get discouraged. Instead, learn from your mistakes.
  • As mentioned before, when fighting the boss: Kite around the pillars and kill the adds before proceeding to the next health tick.
  • When buying items be mindful that you only have 10700g to spend with AT THE BOSS. Top tier items include Gargoyle Stoneplate, Knight's Vow, Blade of the Ruined King, Bloodthirster, Ardent Censer, and Infinity Edge.

Conclusion

This is only meant to give you some insights as to how to beat the Onslaught mode.

Of course this all depends on what team comp you have, what waves you have on what rounds, and how you itemize throughout the rounds.

Best of luck and Burn Bright Guardians.
