Invasion: Onslaught Guide

General Tips
  • Star Guardians are stronger together! Don't try to divide and conquer.
  • Standing on an ally for 2 seconds revives them and gives you temporary immunity. Plus you can revive multiple allies at once – all the more reason to stick together!
  • AOE is king! Certain clumps of enemies ( Vel'Koz, Kog'Maw) are very difficult to take out without AOE burst.
  • In game modes with the protection circle, stepping outside causes a lot of damage over time. Doing it quickly to save a friend or reach the goal can still work!
  • Summoner spells refresh after each round. Burn them when you need them!
  • All void champions count as real champions for certain items and masteries. Morellonomicon will give you loads of mana, and Fervor of Battle will stay at max stacks most of the round, while Thunderlord's Decree will proc on any of them. Choose wisely!
  • Healing is limited, with Lifesteal becoming progressively weaker as the game goes on. This makes Soraka an incredible addition to any team comp.
  • Health packs heal all Star Guardians – have your healthy teammates rush them to avoid risking low health Guardians.
  • If you're going for a high score but mess up during a round, you can have your team suicide to reset the round with no score penalty for a retry. Be careful, as you can only retry a couple times per round before losing!
  • Enemies tend to have high HP, high base armor and low magic resist, so itemize accordingly!
  • All Guardians start the game at level 8, making scaling runes a great investment.

Encounter Types
  • Survival – Defeat waves of enemies!
    • Stick together for safety, but you'll sometimes need to sweep the outskirts of the map to clear out Vel'Koz spawns.
    • Clumps of enemies are extremely dangerous, especially Kog'Maw. Try to focus your burst on them soon after they spawn.
    • Be quick about disposing of enemies, as you'll earn bonus points for clearing the area quickly!

  • Escape – Get to the escape point!
    • Kill any Vel'Koz that spawn as the round starts. If you don't kill them quickly, you'll be attacked from behind as well as in front!
    • Only one teammate needs to reach the exit point, and it spawns a few seconds before the Guardian Shield reaches it. Having a mobile teammate rush the point ( Ahri, Ezreal) can get your team out of a bind.
    • There is no time bonus for this round, so for the maximum score, make sure you kill as many enemies as possible!

  • Defense – Defend the area!
    • Similar to both of the above modes, but the protection shield does not move.
    • Try to both clump as a team and kite the enemy around the borders of the shield – but don't leave it unless you're trying to save a teammate!
    • If Vel'Koz spawn on the edges of the protection shield, be sure to clear them quickly!
    • Avoid clumping up if Cho'Gaths run through your area. If your whole team is getting Ruptured, you'll have a tough time clearing enemies.

  • Boss Fight - The Big One
    • Focus on rotating around the map and killing the minions (enemy champions). Focusing only the boss will get your team overwhelmed before you can finish him.
    • The boss has a devastating AoE attack he telegraphs with arrows on the ground. The only way to avoid it is to get behind the large pillars or slimmer lampposts. Make sure you're close to cover at all times!
    • In periods between waves, try to hit his eye for bonus damage!
    • Watch for large arrows on the ground indicating the boss will dash. Get out of the way or interrupt the dash with Steadfast Presence, Howling Gale or Scatter the Weak.
    • The Boss cannot dash through pillars, so you're safe from him on the opposite side of the pillar. This can allow you to safely clear enemies or hit him for some free damage.

Guardian Tips

  • Use Charm to interrupt priority targets like enraged Kog'Maws and channeling Vel'Koz.
  • You don't deal much damage to high health targets, so focus on clearing Vel'Koz and Kog'Maw as well as voidlings.
  • Your AoE is weaker than other ADCs, so if you have more than one in a composition, focus on tankier targets.
  • Use Essence Flux to increase the attack speed of your allies unless there's a large group of enemy champions you can hit.
  • Save your Bullet Time to deal with large crowds, but watch out for interrupts from Rek'Sai or Cho'Gath.
  • You can cover a lot of ground quickly, so you might be the right choice to deal with a far off Vel'Koz or revive a distant teammate.
  • Use Starcall on enemy champions to heal yourself up. Keep an eye out for health pickups as well.
  • Remember to use Wish and Redemption when your team is getting overwhelmed.
  • Equinox can disable many dangerous enemies like Kog'Maw, Vel'Koz and large Cho'Gath's so save the cooldown for those opportunities.
  • You have the best AoE of the Guardians, so it's your responsibility to stun and burst down large groups of enemies.
  • Save Unleashed Power for high priority targets like Vel'Koz.
  • You can knock Rek'Sais out of their dashes or push back Cho'Gath to protect your team from CC.
  • Repeatedly shield your ADC to empower their attacks with Ardent Censer and bonus AD.
  • Use Howling Gale to interrupt enemy dashes and channels. Most enemies are predictable, so feel free to charge it at a group of enemies.
  • Monsoon and Redemption are great AoE heals to refill your team's health bars if they're running low.
  • You might need to use Switcheroo!'s minigun early on until you have more attack speed. Use Fishbones against groups of enemies. Later you can use Fishbones a lot more.
  • Use Flame Chompers! to stop approaching melee enemies to make it easier to kill them before they use their CC or dashes.
  • You can use the movement speed from Get Excited! to race around the map killing Vel'Koz in the Survival rounds.
  • Spam Help, Pix! and Whimsy on your ADC to maximize their DPS.
  • Whimsy can also be used to disable dangerous enemies in a pinch.
  • Feel free to use Wild Growth on yourself if you're in danger of dying. You can usually keep your allies alive with Help, Pix! but you can't heal yourself.
  • Lux has trouble killing many of the enemies in this mode, so instead make the most of her Prismatic Barrier by repeatedly applying Ardent Censer to your whole team.
  • Use Light Binding to root enemy melee champions before they can use their dashes or CC.
  • Your Final Spark cooldown is much lower if you're able to last-hit an enemy champion, especially at higher ranks. Go for resets when possible.
  • Poppy is nearly invincible as long as you don't get too close to groups of Kog'Maws or eaten by a large Cho'Gath. Block Vel'Koz shots for your team in traveling missions.
  • Use Steadfast Presence to interrupt enemy dashes ( Rek'Sai, Kha'Zix). You can even interrupt the Rift Herald boss' dash!
  • Don't stray too far from your teammates, especially against Kog'Maws, as it takes a while for you to kill enemies.

Enemy Tips

  • The small ones are easily kitable and incredibly slow. Stay clear of them to avoid being repeatedly Ruptured.
  • The big ones focus on a Star Guardian and, if it reaches them, swallows them whole. Only killing the creature will save the Guardian – but an allied Soraka can silence it, causing it to instantly spit out the Guardian.
  • Generally not very threatening, but avoid becoming isolated from your team.
  • Just like the actual Kha'Zix, if damaged he leaves a trail when he turns invisible. Keep firing skillshots!
  • Kha'Zix will always leap, slash and then stealth. Try and hit them with crowd control before they can leap to kill them quickly.
  • Easily among the most threatening enemies, after stopping for a brief charge up period he inflicts massive damage at a large range.
  • CC will interrupt his charge, and they tend to clump. AoE CC from Syndra and Soraka can make them easy to pick off.
  • Both smaller and larger Rek'Sais will repeatedly tunnel and knock up Guardians. Watch for the arrows on the ground that indicate their charge.
  • Try to kite her like Cho'Gath, but be aware of her tunneling! She can't change the direction of her Tunnel once she starts, so try to dodge to the side.
  • Along with Kog'Maw, should be the #1 focus of the Star Guardians. It will constantly shoot infinitely ranged attacks if left alone.
  • In the Escape game mode, be sure to try and eliminate any that spawn along the path – especially in the starting area!

Final Comments

Remember, the best way to get that coveted S or S+ in Onslaught is to use good teamwork and have a plan. Many strategies, compositions and builds can work if you and your teammates are on the same page. Even the most optimized build can fail if the team doesn't work together.

Hopefully this guide answers your questions about the new Star Guardian Event and the Invasion game mode. If you're still left wondering something, leave me a comment with your questions! I'd be happy to help you if I can. :)
