✔️ Nautilus Support: The Unstoppable Anchor of the Team ✔️

By PykEugeo

Welcome to my guide! I'm PykEugeo, an Italian Pyke OTP with over 9,000 hours dedicated to perfecting hook mechanics and playmaker supports. After authoring guides for champions like LeBlanc, Alistar, Leona, Rell, Elise, Twitch, Mel, and Soraka, I’m excited to dive deep into another titan of the bot lane: Nautilus.

Coming from thousands of hours on Pyke, I am always drawn to high-impact playmakers who can dictate the pace of the game. Nautilus fits this role perfectly—while he lacks the slippery mobility of Pyke or Rell, he compensates with unmatched targeted crowd control, high base damage, and sheer durability.

In competitive draft strategy, Nautilus is often the ultimate wildcard and foundational pick. His point-and-click ultimate R Depth Charge serves as a reliable counter to high-mobility carries, assassins, and slippery target comps that would otherwise bypass skillshot-based CC. Whether you need a primary engage, an un-dodgeable lockdown option, or a flex frontline that adapts to any team comp, Nautilus is a fundamental pick to master.

Whether you're looking to expand your support pool this guide will cover everything you need to know.

Staggering Blow
INNATE: Nautilus's basic attacks are empowered to deal 14 – 128 (based on level) bonus physical damage and root the target for 0.75 – 1.5 (based on level) seconds.
This effect cannot occur on the same target more than once every few seconds.

Details
  • Spell shield will block the root but not the bonus damage.
  • Staggering Blow's enhanced attack can be blocked and dodged (the on-target cooldown will still be applied).
    • It will fail to trigger while Nautilus is blinded.
  • The empowered attack will not trigger against structures.
Dredge Line
ACTIVE: Nautilus hurls his anchor in the target direction that stops on the first enemy or terrain hit.
If the anchor hits an enemy, it deals magic damage, reveals them for 1.15 seconds, stuns them for 1 second, and drags them toward Nautilus while he also dashes toward them, both over 0.9 seconds.

If the anchor hits terrain, Nautilus dashes to that location and 50% of Dredge Line's cooldown and mana cost are refunded.
Nautilus is unable to move or attack while Dredge Line is in flight. He can cast any of his abilities during the dash.

COST: 60 MANA
COOLDOWN: 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 / 10 sec.
CAST TIME: 0.25 sec.
RANGE: 1122
WIDTH: 180
SPEED: 2000

MAGIC DAMAGE: 85 / 130 / 175 / 220 / 265 (+ 90% AP)

Details
  • Dredge Line has two hitboxes. The outer hitbox, shown by a visual effect on the ground, will hit champions edge-to-edge. The inner hitbox, shown by the anchor, can hit terrain. Near thinner walls, this can cause the ability to hit a champion on the other side.
  • Dredge Line turns Nautilus' facing direction accordingly upon hitting a valid target.
  • Dredge Line can interact with player-generated terrain.
  • Nautilus will dash all the way to the target's location if Dredge Line executed them or they negated the displacement.
  • Dredge Line will not interrupt any movement commands Nautilus was issued pre-cast so long as their directions somewhat correlate (this is intentional to smooth out traveling/escaping).
  • Spell shield will block the ability but Nautilus will still dash partway to the target.
  • The anchor projectile will stop if Nautilus dies while the projectile is traveling. Enemies hit will still be dealt damage. The drag and root are not applied if Nautilus did not initiate the dash.
  • Displacement immunity will not resist the application of the stun.
  • This ability will cast from wherever the caster is at the start of the cast time.
  • The following table refers for interactions during Dredge Line's cast time.
Titan's Wrath
ACTIVE: Nautilus grants himself a shield for 6 seconds, and while it holds, his basic attacks are empowered to apply Pain of Wrath to the target and enemies near them.
Pain of Wrath: The target takes magic damage over time, half dealt immediately and the other half dealt after 1.25 seconds.

Titan's Wrath resets Nautilus's basic attack timer.

COST: 60 MANA
COOLDOWN: 12 sec.
CAST TIME: NONE
EFFECT RADIUS: 250

Shield Strength: 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 (+ 8 / 9 / 10 / 11 / 12% maximum health)
TOTAL MAGIC DAMAGE: 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 (+ 40% AP)

Details
  • Pain of Wrath's first damage instance is tagged as spell damage, while the second damage instance is tagged as persistent damage.
  • Pain of Wrath damage over time debuff gains another stack when reapplied to the target, but doesn't restart its tick timer. Additional stacks of Pain of Wrath expire when the original debuff does and do not deal any additional damage.
  • Pain of Wrath will be applied by Nautilus's basic attack if he is affected by Titan's Wrath at the start of the attack windup, even if Titan's Wrath expires during the windup.
  • Pain of Wrath will not be applied if the basic attack is dodged or blocked, but will be applied if it is missed.
  • Spell shield will block the ability (but only a single application).
  • The empowered attack does not apply Pain of Wrath to structures.
Riptide
ACTIVE: Nautilus sends three waves of explosions that radiate from him over 0.561 seconds. Each wave deals magic damage to enemies hit, reduced to 50% against those hit by subsequent waves beyond the first, and slows them by an amount that decays over 1.5 seconds.
The first hit against monsters deals bonus magic damage.

COST: 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 MANA
COOLDOWN: 7 / 6.5 / 6 / 5.5 / 5 sec.
CAST TIME: 0.25 sec.
EFFECT RADIUS: Centered range 0 - 350 • 215 - 465 • 350 - 590

Slow: 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50%
MAGIC DAMAGE: 55 / 90 / 125 / 160 / 195 (+ 50% AP)
Monster Bonus Damage: 125 / 165 / 205 / 245 / 285 (+ 50% AP)

Details
  • This ability will cast from wherever the caster is at the end of the cast time.
  • The first wave is centered around Nautilus, while the second and third wave are centered at an offset of 25 units in front of Nautilus at the original cast location.
  • Because of this, there is a zone each in which you can be hit by only 1 wave, or all 3 waves, respectively, without moving.
  • The first wave happens at 0 seconds after the cast time ends, the second wave at 0.297 seconds and the third wave at 0.561 seconds.
  • The intended timing may be 0.25 seconds for each delay, however these are the measured, effective times.
  • The explosions are only a visual effect. The first wave has 8, the seconds has 9, and the third wave has 10 explosions, equally distributed around the rings, starting with one explosion directly in Nautilus' facing direction on each.
Depth Charge
ACTIVE: Nautilus sends out a Depth Charge that chases the target enemy champion, accelerating over time and creating eruptions every 0.264 seconds in its wake that also briefly grant sight of the area. Enemies hit by the eruptions are dealt magic damage, knocked up for 1 second, and stunned for a duration.

Upon reaching the primary target, the Depth Charge erupts a final time at their location. The primary target takes increased damage, is stunned for the same duration, and knocked up for a modified duration.

COST: 100 MANA
COOLDOWN: 120 / 100 / 80 sec.
CAST TIME: 0.46 sec.
TARGET RANGE: 825
EFFECT RADIUS: Range center 225 • 300 • 750
INNER RADIUS: 100
SPEED: 275 + 466.67 per second

MAGIC DAMAGE: 125 / 175 / 225 (+ 40% AP)
Increased Damage: 150 / 275 / 400 (+ 80% AP)
Stun Duration: 1 / 1.5 / 2 seconds
Knock Up Duration: 1 / 1.5 / 2 seconds

Details
  • Depth Charge starts in an offset from whichever direction Nautilus is facing at the end of the cast time.
  • Since Dredge Line causes Nautilus to change his facing direction upon hitting a valid target, Depth Charge's starting point can be changed with a quick Dredge Line + Depth Charge combo.
  • Enemies a certain distance away from the charge / eruption are instead knocked back.
  • Depth Charge's final eruption will occur prematurely if the primary target moves more than 3000 units away from it.
  • Depth Charge will not stop chasing if the target dies or becomes untargetable.
  • Dredge Line will not override Depth Charge's knock up.
  • Displacement immunity will not resist the application of the stun.
  • If the target becomes untargetable, dies, or is too far away or no longer in sight during the cast time, this ability will cancel but does not go on cooldown nor pay its cost (if applicable).
Pros
+ Insanely Broken, 52% Winrate
+ Protoplasm Harness abuser
+ Great Laning + Teamfights
+ Nautilus is a Playmaker easy to play
+ Hard CCs + High Durability with W
+ His CCs is a Single Target except for R

Laning Phase:
  • Great Synergy with Aggressive ADCs: Nautilus pairs well with ADCs who can follow up on his engages and capitalize on his crowd control to deal significant damage.
  • Good Against All-In Champions: He can effectively respond to enemy all-ins, locking them down and counter-attacking.
  • Strong Single Target CC: Nautilus excels at locking down single targets with her abilities, such as her Dredge Line (Q) and Depth Charge (R), making his highly effective at shutting down enemy carries.
Late Game:
  • Powerful engage: Her ultimate, Depth Charge (R), is a powerful AoE ability that stuns/knock up and slows multiple enemies, making it excellent for initiating teamfights.
  • Protecting carries: Nautilus can use his W and durability to protect her team's carries from enemy damage.
  • High Durability: With his naturally high defensive stats and shield from Titan's Wrath (W), Nautilus can soak up a significant amount of damage.
Cons
- Nautilus needs DPS in team
- A bad followup can kill you
- No mobility
- Disengagements are a Problem
- Bad roaming can cause you to lose your laning phase
- It's difficult to escape from a 1vs3 ambush

Laning Phase:
  • Absence of follow-up potential: Nautilus's engages may lack effectiveness if her team fails to follow up, resulting in missed opportunities and potential disadvantages in teamfights.
  • Timing-dependent engages: Nautilus faces the challenge of discerning when to engage, as he must identify opportune moments rather than forcing engagements, which can lead to unfavorable outcomes.
  • Struggles against ranged supports: Nautilus's abilities are most effective when she can get up close and personal with enemies. This can be difficult against ranged support champions who can easily poke his down with abilities from afar, making it hard for Nautilus to engage or trade effectively.
Late Game:
  • Weak Against Poke: Nautilus can struggle against poke-heavy champions who can chip away at her health from a distance, limiting her engage opportunities.
  • Difficult to carry: Nautilus is not a champion who can carry a game on his own, and relies on her team to deal damage and get kills.
  • Low Self-Sufficiency: Nautilus cannot single-handedly change the outcome of a fight and depends on his team to deal damage.

Flash
Flash provides Nautilus with the ability to maneuver past obstacles and quickly close the gap with enemies. This is particularly valuable for initiating engagements with his Q-Basic-E combo or for reaching fleeing enemy carries, allowing her to swiftly disrupt their positioning and control the battlefield.

Moreover, Flash enables Nautilus to position hisself optimally for her abilities, including her ultimate. By using Flash effectively, Nautilus can enhance the impact of his crowd control and damage, significantly increasing his team's chances of securing kills and winning team fights.

If Nautilus has taken the Hextech Flashtraption rune, Flash can be utilized creatively between bushes to surprise and outplay the enemy team in the bot lane. This allows her to set up engages and catch opponents off guard with his combo, gaining a strategic advantage for his team in skirmishes and engagements.

Ignite
When playing Nautilus with Ignite, you gain a significant offensive boost. This allows for dealing additional damage and securing kills during skirmishes. Ignite also reduces enemy regeneration, putting pressure on their lane.

The use of Ignite increases pressure on opponents, forcing them to be cautious and facilitating kills, especially when combined with your ad carry. Nautilus can capitalize on this increased pressure due to his crowd control and damage, giving the team an advantage during fights.

Ignite enhances Nautilus's killing potential, especially in the early game, and can make the difference between a guaranteed kill and an escaping enemy. It also pressures the enemy lane, allowing your ad carry to gain more farm or deal damage more freely.

Finally, Ignite is effective against champions with high healing or regeneration, reducing their effectiveness and making kills easier during skirmishes.
Exhaust
Exhaust offers Nautilus valuable utility and defensive capabilities during both laning phase and team fights. By casting Exhaust on enemy champions, Nautilus can significantly reduce their damage output, making it easier for him and his ADC to survive incoming threats.

During the laning phase, Exhaust can be used defensively to mitigate the damage dealt by aggressive enemy champions or to neutralize potential all-in attempts from the opposing bot lane. This allows Nautilus and his ADC to stay safer in lane and potentially turn the tide of skirmishes in their favor.

In team fights, Exhaust can be crucial for protecting key allies, such as the ADC or other carries, from burst damage or assassins diving into the backline. By casting Exhaust on priority targets, Nautilus can help peel for his team and disrupt the enemy's offensive capabilities, giving his team a better chance at winning the fight.

Additionally, Exhaust can be used offensively to hinder the effectiveness of high-threat enemy champions, such as assassins or hypercarries, by reducing their damage output and slowing their advance. This can create opportunities for Nautilus and her team to capitalize on and secure kills during team fights or skirmishes.
Heal
Heal offers Nautilus and her ADC valuable survivability and sustain during laning phase and team fights. When cast, Heal provides a burst of health to both Nautilus and his ADC, helping them to stay in lane longer and potentially turn the tide of skirmishes.

During the laning phase, Heal can be used to quickly restore health to Nautilus and his ADC in response to enemy poke or all-in attempts. This can allow them to sustain through trades and maintain pressure in lane, giving them an advantage over their opponents.

In team fights, Heal can serve as a clutch lifesaver, providing an emergency burst of healing to Nautilus or his ADC when they are low on health. This can help them survive burst damage or execute a well-timed escape, turning the tide of the fight in their favor.

Additionally, Heal can be used proactively to provide a small movement speed boost to Nautilus and his ADC, allowing them to reposition or chase down fleeing enemies more effectively. This can be particularly useful during engages or disengages, helping Nautilus and his team secure kills or retreat safely.

RESOLVE
Choosing Aftershock as the primary keyhead rune for Nautilus heavily amplifies his durability during all-ins and teamfights. Given his kit is stacked with crowd control, Nautilus can effortlessly trigger Aftershock using his passive Staggering Blow, Q Dredge Line, or R Depth Charge. Upon immobilizing an enemy, it grants him a massive temporary boost in bonus armor and magic resistance, followed by an explosion of magic damage around him. This allows Nautilus to dive headfirst into the enemy team, absorb heavy burst damage, and safely set up kills for his allies without being quickly melted down.
Shield Bash has exceptional synergy with Nautilus thanks to his W Titan's Wrath. Whenever Nautilus gains a shield, Shield Bash instantly provides him with extra bonus armor and magic resistance while the shield is active. Furthermore, his next basic attack deals bonus adaptive damage scaling with his shield amount and maximum health. Since Nautilus relies on shielding himself right as he engages, Shield Bash adds extra punch to his auto-attack trade combo while making him even sturdier in the process.
Bone Plating is a essential rune for surviving intense laning phase trades and burst damage. After taking damage from an enemy champion, Bone Plating significantly mitigates the damage from their next three incoming attacks or abilities. For an aggressive engager like Nautilus, this rune prevents him from being heavily punished when hooking into minion waves or trading basic attacks with enemy bot laners, enabling him to consistently win early 2v2 skirmishes.
Unflinching provides Nautilus with invaluable slow resistance and tenacity whenever he gains a shield or casts a summoner spell. Since Nautilus routinely activates W Titan's Wrath entering fights, Unflinching triggers right when he needs it most, helping him shrug off enemy crowd control and slows to ensure he can reach his targets, chain his abilities, and stick to enemy carries during chaotic teamfights.

INSPIRATION
Hextech Flashtraption is a game-changer for Nautilus, providing immense playmaking ability from fog of war. Charging Hexflash inside unwarded bushes allows Nautilus to gain immediate distance and throw a surprise Q Dredge Line from unexpected angles, completely bypassing enemy minion lines and securing kills when enemies least expect it.
Cosmic Insight serves as a great secondary rune for Nautilus, granting him valuable summoner spell haste and item haste. Having your Flash available more frequently opens up crucial Flash-Hook or Flash-Passive plays to lock down mobile targets. Furthermore, the item haste reduces the cooldown of key support items like Locket of the Iron Solari, allowing Nautilus to protect his team more often throughout mid and late-game objective fights.
The Ability Haste shard on Nautilus significantly reduces the cooldowns of his abilities, allowing him to engage more frequently in combat and provide consistent support to his team.
The double Health Scaling shard provides Nautilus with additional health as he levels up, offering increased durability and survivability throughout the game.

The itemization for Nautilus requires flexibility and adaptability. It's essential to carefully evaluate the game situation and the needs of your team to build a set of items that maximizes Nautilus's effectiveness and support on the battlefield.

This is a standard tank build for Nautilus: Plated Steelcaps provides increased durability against ADCs, allowing Nautilus to resist more in the laning phase and win 2vs2 duels. Celestial Opposition has passive to reduce incoming champion damage and slows nearby enemies upon losing the Blessed effect.
Protoplasm Harness allows Nautilus to impact the battlefield after a fight.
Locket of the Iron Solari enhances Nautilus's supportive capabilities, providing valuable protection for her team during skirmishes and team fights. Kaenic Rookern provides health, magic resistance, and a unique passive that grants a magic shield after a period of not taking damage from champions. Randuin's Omen offers health, armor, and a passive that reduces the critical strike damage received from enemy champions and a unique active that slows nearby enemies upon activation.

Celestial Opposition
VS

Bloodsong
Choosing Celestial Opposition as a support item is recommended when you need to increase your resistance to enemy damage, particularly against opponents with high potential for melee or ranged damage. Additionally, its passive "Become Blessed" provides excellent utility in team fights by slowing surrounding enemies upon losing the Blessed effect. Bloodsong is the best choice (for early-mid game) when you have already obtained an advantage in the laning phase and want to continue to maintain it thanks to its passive of increasing the damage of the allied ADC it causes; it is possible to sell this item in the late game to buy the Celestial Opposition since it is better in late game (you won't lose the missions you've done).

Cloth Armor
Buying Cloth Armor on the first recall with Nautilus in the bot lane can be a strategic choice if you're facing an opponent who deals primarily physical damage, such as an enemy ADC like Jhin or Draven. This item provides early armor to increase your survivability and mitigate incoming damage during trades and skirmishes. By purchasing Cloth Armor early, you can better withstand the enemy's physical assaults and maintain lane presence, giving your team an advantage in the early game.
Winged Moonplate
Purchasing Winged Moonplate on the first recall with Nautilus in the bot lane can be a strategic choice if you're facing opponents who deal a mix of physical and magical damage, or if you're struggling to sustain through trades and skirmishes. This item provides early health regeneration and increased health, enhancing your durability, mobility and allowing you to withstand a variety of threats in lane. Against champions with poke or sustained damage, such as Caitlyn or Ashe, Winged Moonplate can help you sustain through their harassment and maintain lane presence, giving your team a stronger foothold in the early game.
Boots
You will buy Boots if you have excess gold which will later allow you to buy more important boots. Later I will better describe which ones to opt for based on the situations.
Ruby Crystal
Choosing Ruby Crystal on the first recall with Nautilus in the bot lane can indicate a need for immediate health and survivability, especially if you or your ADC have been forced to recall early due to being pushed out of lane or taking significant damage. This item provides an immediate boost to your health pool, helping to offset any disadvantage you may have encountered in lane. Perhaps you and your ADC were out-traded by the opponents, or you were caught out of position and took unnecessary damage. Whatever the reason, purchasing Ruby Crystal allows you to quickly bolster your defenses and mitigate any potential mistakes or disadvantages you may have encountered, giving you a better chance to regain control of the lane and contribute to your team's success.
Control Ward
Purchasing a Control Ward on the first recall with Nautilus in the bot lane can be crucial for maintaining vision control and preventing enemy ganks or roams. If you find yourself pushed back to base earlier than expected, it may indicate that your lane is struggling or that the enemy jungler has been applying pressure. Buying a Control Ward allows you to regain vision in key areas of the map, such as the river or the enemy jungle entrances, helping to prevent further setbacks and allowing you to safely resume laning. Additionally, placing a Control Ward in the river bush or the enemy tri-bush can provide valuable information about the enemy's movements, potentially averting future ganks and enabling your team to make informed decisions.

Boots of Swiftness

Mercury's Treads

Plated Steelcaps
Opting for Boots of Swiftness, Mercury's Treads, or Plated Steelcaps with Nautilus depends on the specific threats you're facing and your team's needs. If you're up against opponents with heavy crowd control or magical damage like Rell or Zyra, Mercury's Treads can provide invaluable tenacity and magic resistance, allowing you to survive and engage effectively. On the other hand, if you're dealing with a high-physical damage threat or need increased mobility to dodge skillshots, roam, or engage/disengage more efficiently, Plated Steelcaps can be the better choice against such as Lucian or Caitlyn. Similarly, Boots of Swiftness can be effective against skillshot-based champions or when mobility is crucial for positioning or roaming.

Bandlepipes
VS

Locket of the Iron Solari
Building Bandlepipes as the first item can be advantageous if you're looking to maximize your mobility and atk speed of your Adc potential. The movement speed acceleration and the enhanced attack speed from its passive make Bandlepipes an excellent choice for quickly execution and get easy kills and applying pressure in your lane. This is particularly useful if you ADCs that abuse atk speed (and crit too) as Kai'Sa, Ashe and Jinx or Twitch, if your ADC is an APC then Locket or zeke is a good choise. Opting to build Locket of the Iron Solari as the first item may be preferable if you're facing a bot lane with mixed damage, such as Kai'Sa and Seraphine. Locket of the Iron Solari provides significant protection against magic damage, along with offering an activatable shield that can be crucial for protecting yourself and your allies during skirmishes in lane or early game engagements. This item can help mitigate damage from a variety of sources and increase the survivability of your entire team, especially in situations where the opponent has a mix of physical and magic damage.

Locket of the Iron Solari
Opting for Locket of the Iron Solari before building Protoplasm Harness as your first item can be a strategic choice to bolster your team's survivability and provide additional utility in team fights. While Protoplasm Harness enhances your own mobility and impact potential on lanes, Locket of the Iron Solari complements this by offering a team-wide shield and magic resistance aura.
Since Protoplasm Harness is primarily focused on enhancing your individual performance and map presence, transitioning into Locket of the Iron Solari shifts your focus towards supporting your team in team fights and skirmishes. The activatable shield from Locket of the Iron Solari can provide crucial protection to your allies, mitigating burst damage and turning the tide of engagements in your team's favor.
Protoplasm Harness
Opting instead for Protoplasm Harness as your core item is a strategic choice to bolster your team's survivability and amplify your utility in teamfights. While Protoplasm Harness enhances your durability, stats, and individual impact on the map, Locket of the Iron Solari complements this by offering an invaluable team-wide active shield to absorb incoming damage.
Since Protoplasm Harness focuses on boosting your personal frontline presence and fight longevity, transitioning into Locket of the Iron Solari shifts your focus towards protecting your allies. The active shield from Locket of the Iron Solari works exceptionally well alongside your kit, allowing Nautilus to lock down high-priority targets with Dredge Line while simultaneously mitigating burst damage to keep your carries alive during heavy engagements.

Knight's Vow
Knight's Vow can be a strong choice as a second item for Nautilus due to its ability to enhance your survivability and provide additional utility for your ADC or another teammate.
As a tank support, building Knight's Vow allows you to redirect a portion of the damage taken by your ally to yourself, effectively increasing their durability in fights. This can be especially beneficial if your ADC is ahead or if they are your primary source of damage output. By taking damage for your ADC, you not only increase their survivability but also strengthen your bond as a supportive duo.
Abyssal Mask
Opting for Abyssal Mask as a second item for Nautilus can be a strategic choice to enhance your tankiness and provide additional utility in team fights, particularly if you find yourself facing opponents with significant magic damage threats.
Abyssal Mask provides a substantial amount of magic resistance, making you more resilient against enemy magic damage dealers. This can be invaluable if you're facing a composition with strong AP threats, as it allows you to soak up damage and remain a formidable frontline presence for your team.
Additionally, Abyssal Mask's unique passive enhances your own magic damage output and that of nearby allies, amplifying the effectiveness of your abilities and potentially increasing your team's overall damage output. This can be particularly beneficial if your team composition includes AP champions who can benefit from the bonus magic damage.
Randuin's Omen
Randuin's Omen offers a substantial amount of health and armor, making you more durable against physical damage threats and it has an active that allows you to slow AOE all enemies near you.
Additionally, Randuin's Omen's unique passive reduces the critical strike damage received from enemy champions, mitigating the impact of champions who rely on critical strikes for their damage output. This can be particularly effective against ADCs or champions with built-in critical strike mechanics, as it significantly reduces their damage potential and makes you more resilient against their attacks.
I definitely recommend building it if there are 2 Infinity Edge in the path of the enemy build.

Kaenic Rookern
Opting for Kaenic Rookern as a situational item for Nautilus can be a strategic choice to increase your durability and provide additional magic resistance, this enhances your effectiveness as a frontline presence during skirmishes and team fights, allowing you to better withstand the enemy's magical onslaughts.
Moreover, the unique passive of Kaenic Rookern grants a magic shield after not taking damage from champions for 15 seconds. This shield, amounting to 18% of your maximum health, provides a valuable layer of defense against burst damage or sustained magical attacks, enhancing your survivability in crucial moments of combat.
Frozen Heart
Opting for Frozen Heart as a situational item for Nautilus bolsters your durability and utility in team fights, especially against attack speed-focused opponents. With its significant armor, it fortifies your frontline presence, allowing you to absorb more damage from physical threats like marksmen. The unique passive of Frozen Heart, which reduces nearby enemy champions' attack speed, diminishes their damage output significantly, particularly effective against champions heavily reliant on auto-attacks. Additionally, the cooldown reduction from Frozen Heart enhances your crowd control abilities' availability, aiding in controlling fights and peeling for your team's carries. Notable examples of champions who struggle against Frozen Heart's debuff include Yasuo, Jinx, or Master Yi.
Thornmail
Opting for Thornmail as a situational item for Nautilus can substantially increase your survivability and utility, particularly against enemy champions heavily reliant on basic attacks or life steal. With its significant armor and unique passive that reflects damage back to attackers, Thornmail fortifies your frontline presence, making you a formidable deterrent against auto-attack-focused opponents. The passive damage reflection from Thornmail not only punishes enemies for attacking you but also helps mitigate their sustain, reducing their effectiveness in prolonged engagements. Additionally, the grievous wounds effect applied by Thornmail reduces enemy healing, further weakening their ability to sustain through fights. Notable examples of champions who struggle against Thornmail's effectiveness include marksmen or champions with significant life steal, such as Vayne or Fiora.
Sunfire Aegis
Opting for Sunfire Aegis as a situational item for Nautilus can significantly bolster your durability and provide additional damage in team fights, particularly when looking to increase your presence as a frontline tank. With its substantial health and armor, Sunfire Aegis fortifies your resilience against physical damage threats, making you a formidable force on the frontline. The Immolate passive of Sunfire Aegis deals persistent magic damage to nearby enemies, increasing your damage output during prolonged engagements and enhancing your threat level in team fights. Notable examples of champions who struggle against Sunfire Aegis's damage output include squishy melee champions or champions with low mobility, such as assassins or bruisers.
Hollow Radiance
Opting for Hollow Radiance as a situational item for Nautilus can significantly enhance your durability and provide additional damage output in team fights, especially when seeking to increase your presence as a frontline tank. With its substantial health and magic resistance, Hollow Radiance fortifies your resilience against both physical and magical damage threats, making you a formidable force on the battlefield. The unique passive of Hollow Radiance deals persistent magic damage to nearby enemies when taking or dealing damage, increasing your damage output during engagements and exerting pressure on enemy champions. Notable examples of champions who struggle against Hollow Radiance's damage output include squishy melee champions or champions with low mobility, such as assassins AP or bruisers AP ( Akali, Evelynn, Mordekaiser, Gwen).
Jak'Sho, The Protean
Opting for Jak'Sho, The Protean as a situational item for Nautilus can significantly enhance your durability and defensive capabilities in extended team fights, especially when facing sustained damage threats. With its combination of armor, health, and magic resistance, Jak'Sho, The Protean fortifies your resilience against both physical and magical damage, making you a formidable tank on the frontline. The unique passive of Jak'Sho, The Protean grants stacks for each second in combat with enemy champions, increasing your bonus armor and magic resistance by 30% at maximum stacks until the end of combat. Talking of wave management, Nautilus wields strategic prowess as a support. With her versatile toolkit, she navigates the delicate balance of controlling minion waves to gain advantages for his team. From orchestrating fast pushes to orchestrating freezes, each technique serves a distinct purpose in his quest to secure lane dominance and pave the path to victory.

1. Fast Push
✦Accelerated lane clearance

When your ADC decides to fast push, your role as Nautilus is to help them quickly clear the wave and push it towards the enemy tower. This strategy is useful when you want to reset the wave or create pressure on the enemy tower. Use your abilities to clear minions efficiently and provide protection for your ADC during the push.

2. Slow push
✦Gradual lane buildup

Slow pushing involves killing enemy minions at a slower pace, allowing your minion wave to build up over time. As Nautilus, you can assist your ADC by selectively damaging enemy minions to maintain a slow push. This strategy is effective for building a minion advantage, creating opportunities for turret dives, or setting up for objective control.

3. Freeze
✦Wave Freezing

Freezing the wave involves maintaining an equilibrium near your tower, denying the enemy ADC access to farm safely. As Nautilus, you can assist in freezing the wave by only last-hitting minions and zoning the enemy bot lane duo away from the minion wave. Freezing is advantageous when your team wants to deny the enemy ADC farm or set up for jungle ganks.

Nautilus is a versatile support champion known for his crowd control and tankiness, making his a formidable presence in teamfights. While he excels in disrupting melee or close-range compositions, he can hold her own against higher-range teams if they lack heavy poke or disengage. With his ability to engage or peel for his team, Nautilus synergizes well with compositions that possess strong engage or protective capabilities, mitigating his vulnerabilities. Despite a relatively modest early game, Nautilus's potential shines in the late game, where he can dictate teamfights and secure victories with his disruptive kit and strategic playstyle.

ENGAGING & TRADING

Early in the game, Nautilus possesses immense crowd control and substantial base damage, making him one of the most threatening engage supports. His primary tool to initiate trades is his Q Dredge Line, which pulls both him and his target together. Following up immediately with an auto-attack activates his passive Staggering Blow, applying an instant root to guarantee a favorable fight for your ADC.

Nautilus can maximize his trading efficiency by properly resetting his basic attack timer. Activating his W Titan's Wrath right after an auto-attack instantly resets it, granting him a shield while adding area-of-effect damage over time. Utilizing W Titan's Wrath early in the trade absorbs incoming return damage, allowing him to easily out-trade enemy bot laners.

When trading, Nautilus should cast E Riptide directly after locking down his target. The slow waves deal multi-hit damage to close-range enemies and make it nearly impossible for them to escape without blowing summoner spells. To ensure maximum damage, try to position so the enemy hits multiple waves as they attempt to retreat.

To surprise opponents and create instant pressure, consider using the Hextech Flashtraption rune. Nautilus can charge Hexflash from unwarded bushes to throw a point-blank Q Dredge Line, completely bypassing minion waves and catching enemies off-guard—especially when securing an early level 2 powerspike.

Once Nautilus reaches level 6, his engage capability becomes virtually point-and-click with R Depth Charge. His ultimate sends a targeted shockwave that knocks up the target and anyone caught in its path. It serves as an un-cleansable engage tool, making it perfect for initiating skirmishes or setting up guaranteed ganks with your jungler.

As the game transitions into the mid-game, Nautilus should look to roam and pair up with his jungler to secure vision and pick off isolated targets. In teamfights, he excels at either starting the fight with R Depth Charge or standing alongside his carries to peel incoming threats using his passive Staggering Blow and E Riptide.

By mastering hook trajectories, managing shield timing, and applying relentless pressure, Nautilus can dominate the laning phase and dictate the tempo of the entire map.

TEAMFIGHTING & OBJECTIVES

Transitioning into the mid-late game, Nautilus plays a crucial role in teamfights and securing objectives. With his massive health pool and unmatched lockdown potential, he excels at initiating fights, peeling for his carries, and creating game-winning picks across the map.

In teamfights, Nautilus should focus on locking down priority targets and disrupting the enemy formation. His R Depth Charge serves as a reliable, point-and-click engage that can knock up multiple enemies in its path, while Q Dredge Line allows him to drag key targets out of position. Meanwhile, weaving auto-attacks to trigger Staggering Blow on different enemies allows Nautilus to root multiple threats in a single chaotic fight, keeping his high-damage carries safe from assassins and divers.

When it comes to securing objectives like dragon, Rift Herald, and Baron Nashor, Nautilus's zone control and sheer presence make him an invaluable asset. He can anchor himself in choke points to deny enemy vision and zone opponents away from the pit. During objective contests, activating W Titan's Wrath allows him to absorb incoming poke damage while using E Riptide to slow down anyone attempting to steal the objective.

In the mid-late game, Nautilus should prioritize finding flank routes or bush traps to initiate favorable fights and secure objectives. Precise skillshot placement and strong coordination with your team are key to maximizing Nautilus’s impact. By effectively controlling the frontlines and locking down critical threats, he can ensure his team maintains map dominance and secures the win.

Before you even think about leaving the bottom lane, let this serve as a serious warning: roaming is a double-edged sword that can single-handedly win or ruin your game.

Too many low and mid-elo support players treat roaming as a random wander across the river whenever they get bored in lane. They leave their ADC vulnerable under tower to get dove, lose hundreds of gold and experience, fall severely behind on their Support Quest timings, and arrive mid lane only to accomplish nothing while blowing their own summoner spells. That is not roaming—that is game-losing negligence.

Mastering the roam with playmakers like Nautilus, Leona, Rell, Pyke requires cold, calculated discipline. It is an intricate chess game of reading minion waves, tracking enemy vision, controlling tempo, and weaponizing the fog of war. When executed correctly, a proper roam suffocates the enemy team, creates phantom pressure across the entire map, and snowballs your jungler and solo laners out of control. When executed poorly, it completely bankrupts both you and your ADC.

If you want to truly command the map, you must stop guessing and start calculating. Here is everything you need to know about time, vision, and map control.
ROAMING, TEMPO & VISION CONTROL

In Season 16, roaming is no longer about blindly walking out of lane whenever you feel like it. The balance between the new Support Role Quest incentives and map mobility requires a deep understanding of wave management, vision denial, and tempo windows. Mastering these fundamentals transforms Nautilus from simple lane bots into terrifying map-wide dictators.

"Tempo" in League of Legends is literally your time advantage over your opponents. It is the right to act first on the map. If you and your ADC push a wave under the enemy tower, the enemies are "stuck" farming. In those 15-30 seconds, you have *Tempo*. You can move, place vision, or gank while the enemy support cannot respond.
  • Gaining Tempo: Obtained by crashing waves, forcing enemy base recalls (Recall), or getting kills.
  • Spending Tempo: You use this advantage to move mid, help the jungler with an invade, place deep vision, or take objectives.
  • Losing Tempo: Standing still in brushes for 20 seconds with nothing happening, or roaming with an unfavorable wave in the bot lane. Lost Tempo translates into XP and Gold deficits.

Understanding Wave Crashes & Recalls

Every successful roam starts with proper wave setup in the bottom lane. Moving without looking at minion waves will force your ADC to lose massive gold and experience, or leave you severely behind in your quest progression.
  • The Slow Push Crash: Work with your ADC to stack 2-3 minion waves together before crashing them directly into the enemy tower. This creates an extended window of time where the enemy team is forced to last-hit under tower while your wave slowly bounces back.
  • The Tempo Reset: Once the wave crashes, recall immediately instead of overstaying for extra plates or chip damage. Recalling gives you fresh movement speed, recharged support charges, and item power before the enemy can react.
  • The Deep Out-of-Base Walk: Never path straight back to bot lane out of base. Walk towards your jungle or the river/mid area first. If a fight breaks out mid or at an objective, you are already halfway there. If nothing is happening, you simply path back to bot lane without losing a single minion wave.

Capitalizing on Fog of War (The "Canyon" Playstyle)

Top-tier junglers and supports like Canyon dominate the map by manipulating information. The enemy team can only react to what they can see on their minimap.
  • Unseen Threat Presence: When you walk out of vision behind a crashed wave, the enemy mid laner and jungler must immediately play more passively out of fear of a hook or stun. Simply being missing on the map creates phantom pressure across all lanes.
  • The Deceptive Pathing: Step into a bot lane bush while in full view of enemy minions, then immediately use Hexflash or walk through the fog of war toward mid lane. If the enemy bot lane pinged "missing" inside the bush, the mid laner will often drop their guard after 5-10 seconds thinking you are just camping for a bush hook.
  • Flanking from Fog: Avoid walking down the open river where standard wards sit. Instead, sweep through your own jungle, use Blast Cones, or sweep the dragon pit wall to angle your Q Dredge Line behind enemy laners who think they are safe near their tower.

Identifying High-Value Roam Windows

Not all roams are created equal. You must evaluate the board state before commiting your movement speed to another lane:
  • Mid Laner Flash Timers: If the enemy mid laner has no Flash, a point-and-click stun or targeted engage guarantees a kill or a forced back.
  • Grub & Herald Timings: Coordinating a roam with your jungler around objective spawns ensures your team secures map objectives uncontested. Joining your jungler for a 2v2 invade into the enemy jungle locks down the entire river area.
  • Counter-Ganking over Ganking: If your mid laner is pushed up and vulnerable, positioning yourself in the river bush out of sight allows you to turn the fight completely around the moment the enemy jungler commits.

The Golden Rule of S16 Roaming

Always respect your 800-gold support quest timing. Before completing your quest, only execute high-probability roams during your natural recall windows. Once your quest is fully evolved, leverage your extra Control Ward slot and statutory vision power to permanently sweep the river, erase enemy information, and execute relentless fog-of-war picks.

Nautilus with her ability to initiate and dictate the flow of team engagements, he transcends the traditional role of a support, becoming a pivotal figure in orchestrating macro-level plays. Whether it's leading the charge in coordinated jungle invasions, facilitating mid lane ganks with her crowd control prowess, or spearheading objective control with her disruptive presence, Nautilus embodies the essence of a playmaker support. In the hands of a skilled player, his strategic acumen and decisive actions can tilt the scales of battle in favor of his team, securing victories through calculated macro plays and unparalleled map control.
Mid lane ganks
As Nautilus, coordinating ganks on the mid lane can be highly effective, especially when accompanied by your jungler. Utilize your crowd control abilities to initiate and lock down enemy mid laners, creating opportunities for kills or summoner spell burns. Communicate with your mid laner and jungler to ensure successful ganks and capitalize on overextended opponents.
Jungle Invasions
Invading the enemy jungle alongside your jungler is a proactive way to establish vision control, deny resources, and apply pressure across the map. With your tankiness and crowd control, Nautilus can assist in securing kills or forcing enemy junglers out of their territory. Coordinate with your team to invade when you have lane priority and ensure proper vision coverage to avoid potential counterattacks.
Objective Control
Supporting your team in securing objectives like dragon is crucial for maintaining map control and securing victory. Use your crowd control to zone enemies away from contested areas, providing opportunities for your team to secure objectives safely. Additionally, coordinate with your team to set up vision around key objectives and rotate accordingly to contest or secure them when they spawn.
Map Awareness and Rotation
As a support, maintaining map awareness is paramount. Keep track of enemy movements, objectives timers, and potential gank opportunities to make informed decisions. Rotate efficiently between lanes and objectives to provide assistance where needed, whether it's protecting your ADC during sieges or roaming to assist other lanes in securing kills or objectives.
Deep Jungle Wards
Placing deep wards in the enemy jungle can lead to successful picks and rotations. These wards grant your team insights into the enemy jungler's position and roaming patterns. Knowing where the enemy jungler is allows your laners to play more aggressively when the jungler is far away or set up plays when they spot the enemy jungler on the opposite side of the map. Additionally, deep wards in the enemy jungle enable your team to spot enemy rotations, leading to more informed decisions and strategic movements across the map.
Baron Control
Having vision around the Baron pit is paramount when it comes to securing this game-changing objective. By placing wards in key areas like the river, enemy jungle entrances, and the Baron pit itself, your team gains essential information about the enemy team's movements. Vision around Baron allows your team to detect enemy attempts at sneaking the Baron, providing an opportunity for a decisive contest or potential pick on unsuspecting opponents. Additionally, vision around Baron can serve as a baiting tool, enticing the enemy into unfavorable fights and creating opportunities for your team to gain the upper hand.
Elder Dragon Control
Vision around the Elder Dragon is crucial for securing one of the most powerful buffs in the game. The Elder Dragon provides a game-changing advantage that can swing teamfights and determine the outcome of objectives. Denying the Elder Dragon to the enemy team can be just as impactful as securing it for your own team.

When your team slays the Elder Dragon, it grants the Dragon's Fury buff. This buff enhances all of your champion’s damage, dealing additional burn damage to enemies based on their missing health. This burn damage is incredibly powerful, especially in the late game, where it can quickly melt down enemy champions and secure the win in teamfights. The Dragon's Fury buff lasts for a significant duration, and it gives your team a strong advantage when contesting other objectives like Baron or turrets.

On the other hand, denying the enemy the Elder Dragon stops them from gaining this powerful buff and can severely weaken their presence in late-game fights. If the enemy secures the Elder Dragon, they gain significant damage potential and can outlast your team in crucial fights. Vision control around the Elder Dragon pit is essential, as it provides crucial information about enemy rotations and attempts to secure the dragon. A well-timed steal or denial of this buff can delay the enemy's push and drastically change the momentum of the game.

In this section, I'll delve into bot lane matchups, focusing on how Nautilus support fares against various types of enemy supports. I'll categorize them based on their playstyles: engager-disengagers, peelers, tanks, mages, enchanters, poke mages, poke burst, and playmakers. It's important to note that some supports may fall into multiple categories, and item builds can significantly impact their playstyle. Additionally, the support matchup often holds more weight than the ADC matchup, particularly in higher elos, influencing lane dynamics and overall strategy.
Enchanter Champions

When facing Enchanter Champions like Lulu, Soraka, Sona, and others, Nautilus's gameplay dynamic shifts. These champions primarily focus on protecting and empowering their ADC rather than directly engaging. Conversely, Nautilus excels in crowd control and setting up skirmishes with her crowd control abilities. Dealing with Enchanters can be an initial challenge due to their healing and shielding potential, but Nautilus can counter them with consistent pressure and well-timed engagements. It's important for Nautilus and her ADC to look for opportunities to punish Enchanters during windows of opportunity when their abilities are on cooldown. Aggressive play and proper skirmish management can undermine the effectiveness of Enchanters, allowing Nautilus and his team to gain lane control and potentially secure victory.
Playmaker Champions

When facing playmaker supports like Pyke, Blitzcrank, Thresh, Rakan and others, Nautilus must adapt her approach due to their aggressive engage potential. These champions thrive on catching opponents out of position and starting fights. However, they often lack sustain and rely heavily on landing skill shots to engage effectively. Nautilus can exploit this by playing cautiously and avoiding getting caught by their crowd control abilities. He should focus on using her own crowd control to disrupt their engages and peel for his ADC. Additionally, punishing their missed skill shots or engaging when their abilities are on cooldown can create opportunities for favorable trades and turn the tide of the lane in Nautilus's favor. It's crucial for Nautilus to maintain vision control and communicate effectively with his ADC to anticipate and counter the aggressive plays of playmaker supports.
Poke-Burst Mage Champions

When facing poke-burst supports like Lux, Karma, Brand, Zyra and others, Nautilus must approach the matchup with caution due to their high damage output and long-range abilities. These champions excel at harassing opponents from a distance and can quickly burst down squishy targets if left unchecked. However, they are typically squishy themselves and lack sustained crowd control. Nautilus can capitalize on this by engaging when their key abilities are on cooldown or when they misposition. Utilizing his tankiness and crowd control, Nautilus can disrupt their poke patterns and create opportunities for favorable trades or all-ins. Additionally, maintaining bush control and vision denial can limit their ability to land skill shots and poke effectively. Communication with his ADC is crucial to coordinate engages and avoid unnecessary poke damage. By playing smart and capitalizing on windows of opportunity, Nautilus can neutralize the threat posed by poke-burst supports and secure lane dominance for his team.
Peeler-Tank Champions

When facing peeler-tank supports like Taric, Tahm Kench, Braum and others, Nautilus must navigate their formidable defensive capabilities and crowd control. These champions excel at protecting their ADCs and disrupting enemy engages with their crowd control abilities. However, they can be susceptible to being kited or outmaneuvered due to their lack of mobility. Nautilus can exploit this by utilizing his mobility and crowd control to create opportunities for engages and picks. He should focus on disrupting their peel attempts and isolating priority targets with his crowd control abilities. Additionally, Nautilus can punish their mispositioning or overcommitment by coordinating engages with her ADC. It's important for Nautilus to play patiently and avoid all-in engages when their defensive cooldowns are available. By maintaining vision control and capitalizing on moments of vulnerability, Nautilus can overcome the defensive prowess of peeler-tank supports and secure advantages for his team.

In this section, I'll explore the synergies between Nautilus support and various ADCs, focusing on their compatibility and effectiveness across different playstyles. I'll categorize ADCs based on their strengths: Snowballing Champions, Long Range Hypercarries, Poke/High Range AD Carries, and Short Range All-In ADCs. Understanding these lane dynamics is crucial as they heavily dictate early trade patterns, level 2 powerspikes, and overall mid-game execution.
Snowballing Champions

When paired with aggressive snowballing ADCs like Draven, Samira, Tristana, Kalista, and Lucian, Nautilus becomes a lethal lane bully. These champions thrive on early kills, burst trades, and dominating the 2v2 from level 2 onwards. Nautilus provides the ultimate setup with Q Dredge Line and his passive Staggering Blow, locking enemies down long enough for his ADC to output their maximum damage output. Champions like Samira can instantly stack their passive off Nautilus's hard CC, while Kalista and Draven can follow up with overwhelming early physical damage. To succeed with this synergy, look for early level 2 spikes, control lane bushes with Hexflash, and keep aggressive vision in the river to prevent enemy counter-ganks.
Long Range Hypercarries

Pairing Nautilus with scaling hypercarries like Jinx, Zeri, Aphelios, Kog'Maw, and Vayne transforms his role into an impenetrable wall and frontline enabler. While these ADCs require time and farm to scale, Nautilus grants them absolute safety in lane by threatening any opponents who attempt to trade aggressively. The lockdown from Q Dredge Line allows trap-based ADCs like Jinx to easily chain CC for guaranteed kills. In late-game teamfights, Nautilus can pivot between starting fights with R Depth Charge or staying grounded beside his hypercarry, using his passive root Staggering Blow and E Riptide slow to peel off enemy divers and assassins.
Poke & High Range AD Carries

When matched with poke or high-range ADCs such as Caitlyn, Miss Fortune, Varus, Ashe, and Ezreal, Nautilus acts as the ultimate zoning threat. These ADCs excel at chunking down the enemy team's health pool from a safe distance, making enemies hesitant to approach the minion wave. Once an enemy champion is poked down below half health, Nautilus can easily hit a Q Dredge Line or R Depth Charge to secure an instant kill. Furthermore, Nautilus synergizes exceptionally well with ultimate combos—locking down targets inside Miss Fortune's ultimate or guaranteeing skillshots for Varus and Ezreal. In these lanes, prioritize controlling side bushes and letting your ADC poke before pulling the trigger on an all-in.
Short Range All-In ADCs

Short-range all-in ADCs like Kai'Sa, Nilah, Xayah, and Tristana (early game trist) thrive in chaotic, close-quarters skirmishes where they can burst down single targets. Nautilus is one of the best supports for these champions because his CC chain guarantees they can close the distance without taking free damage. Kai'Sa in particular benefits massively from Nautilus, as every hard CC ability he lands applies stacks of her passive. Nilah can seamlessly dash onto targets Nautilus hooks and chain her ultimate CC on top of his. When playing with short-range partners, focus on isolating squishy targets, soaking burst damage with W Titan's Wrath, and winning quick, explosive trades in the bot lane.
