Why Tank Galio?
About me
My name is Porjn and I am a jungle/support main who has been playing for around two years, I am silver but I mainly focus on normal games. I main Zac and Galio and prefer tanky champs that provide a lot of cc and utility to their team. I currently have 100's of games on Galio jungle and have been developing my off-meta build for two seasons. I average over a 50% wr as of now and am finding even more success with my newer builds so I believe over time this will go higher and be viable in lower elos.
Why Tank Galio?
Galio has recently become one of my favourite champs, I first started playing him support, so early on I was playing a tanky/bruiser build on him. I noticed his MR scalings and anti-mage capabilities and thought that he could be an excellent counter to AP heavy teams, similar to Rammus against AD teams. Over my many games on the pick and developing the build he is just as effective into mixed damage teams and an off-tank build is best on him. I will explain my rune and item choices as well as builds,pathing and ganking in my chapters below.

Anti-AP Prowess

Galio is what I would call an MR version of Rammus, due to the fact he scales with MR. This makes him a solid choice into high magic damage teams because both his damage and resistances scale with MR, doubling the value of each MR gained and making him an absolute unit into high AP teams.

Insane Support Capabilities

Galio is an incredibly selfless, supportive tank. He has many tools in his kit to help him eat as much damage as he can, take aggro from enemies and peel your carries.

Anti-Carry

Galio is one of the most effective Anti-Carries in the game in my opinion. An Anti-Carry is a subgroup of champions that specialize on hindering typical carry champs from carrying and tearing through your team. Galio's taunt is the reason he is so incredible at this job, if it is followed up with an e he can keep a priority target out of the fight for 2.75 seconds while your team is melting them.

Reliable CC

Galio has really reliable CC in teamfights with his taunt and knockup. Two to three enemy champs can consistenly be Taunted for 2 seconds every teamfight and if you position well, 4-5 man taunts can happen frequently.

Slow/Unhealthy Clear

Galio Jungle has some pretty terrible clear, especially early game before Bami's Cinder. He needs a leash every game and farms significantly slower than meta junglers.

Item/Early Reliant

If you cannot afford Bami's Cinder and Boots by first back you will be significantly weaker than if you can. Boots gets priority with a pred build but Galio needs Bami's Cinder as soon as possible to make farming tolerable.

Awkward Ultimate

Galios ultimate Hero's Entrance can be extremely awkward to use effectively, because of its long cast time enemies usually have a long time to leave and get to safety. It is important to use this Ultimate very strategically so that enemis have to stay in its AoE or that they lose something like and objective/kill or farm by leaving. Keep in mind it is better to use your ultimate after someone has been cc'd inside the AoE, look out for ults like Curse of the Sad Mummy, Moonfall or Infinite Duress as they can be good lockdown to try secure a good ultimate.

Bad At Dragons

Galio lacks sustain in his kit which can make taking dragons difficult, especially early. Galio needs A LOT of help from his ADC and sup to kill them early so don't go trying to solo it like Master Yi or Warwick would.
Runes


Guardian Runes
Guardian
Font of Life
Guardian is definitely not a rune associated with junglers but i have found it quite effective, it provides extra safety in ganks and when used with your ultimate Hero's Entrancecan change the tides of any teamfight. Font of Life allows Galio to support his team even further, healing his squishies based off your max health after you immobilize enemies.
Second Wind
Unflinching
This rune provides some much needed sustain after ganks and skirmishes, it can keep you healthy in fights late game. Unflinching is a necessary rune for many tanks and Galio is no exception, the slow resist and tenacity this rune provides can be a life saver for teamfights.
Zombie Ward
Ultimate Hunter
Zombie ward works really well with the changed oracle lens and allows you to further support your team with vision. Zombie ward gives extra ap for each ward zombified so over the game it can help. Galios ult cd is abysmally long, this rune saves you by lowering its cd and giving you more options. Since Galio's clear isnt great this rune allows his ult to be up more often for counterganks and can be a lifesaver.
Predator Runes
Predator
Taste of Blood
Predator is a pretty standard rune for Galio and I feel that it suits his jungle playstyle fairly well, increasing his damage slightly and allowing him to land big taunts in ganks and teamfights. Between Ghost and Predator you will almost always have Move speed ready as needed for ganks. Taste of blood provides a bit of sustain for Galio during ganks and teamfights and is better than the other options this row of runes provides in my opinion.
Eyeball Collection
Ultimate Hunter
Pretty standard rune choice, could be swapped with Zombie Ward but eyeball collection is just simpler and the extra adaptive stats it gives are helpful. Galios ult cd is abysmally long, this rune saves you by lowering its cd and giving you more options. Since Galio's clear isnt great this rune allows his ult to be up more often for counterganks and can be a lifesaver.
Triumph
Legend: Tenacity
Triumph is one of my favourite runes of all, it increases gold, survivability and gives you a healthier clear by allowing you to leave successful ganks with more health. This is an absolute necessity to Galio jungle. Tenacity is a solid rune for any tank champ, tenacity can help you steamroll through teamfights and chase enemies. This rune is strongest when the enemy teams have multiple stuns (Not airborne cc as this is not affected by tenacity).

Glacial is an extremely powerful keystone for Galio in my opinion, Galio has some incredibly strong lockdown and Glacial improves this even further while supporting his team with reduced damage. This is an incredibly helpful rune on Galio, one which I never expected to use on him. This rune increases your success in every gank and can give you extremely valuable opportunities to trap players into tower with flash into taunt with Shield of Durand.
Future's Market
Cosmic Insight
Galio jungle would have to rely heavily on getting a kill or assist early so you can purchase Bami's Cinder, Boots and a Control Ward on first back. Future's market avoids the kill or assist necessity, gives you consistency and the ability to hit your main item power spikes faster than your opponent. This increases your gank power by making sure your flash is up really frequently, between flashes and hexflashes I can gank a lane and have a flash or hexflash available every time. This rune also reduces the item cooldown on Iceborn Gauntlet allowing you to spam slows on your opponents.
Triumph

Items
Many items synergize well with Galio as he is a mage, a tank and a tank support. While I feel many items can be built, I will explain why my most common built items synergize well with Galio in this play style and when to build these items.
Must Buy
This item is the backbone of this build, at the cheap price of 2800 gold it is an excellent item for a supportive jungler. This item has incredible synergy with your kit in the way it can secure Shield of Durand after a Justice Punch Colossal Smash. Spamming slows in teamfights with this item is incredibly effective, increasing your damage output and teamfight presence. The mythic passive of health increases your passive Shield of Durand magic shield which is shared with your teammates in Hero's Entrance. The base armor, mr and health stats on the item are very helpful in early skirmishes and clearing camps.
This is an item I always focus on building second, only interrupted by a Bramble Vest or a defensive item like Force of Nature or rush. This item has great synergy with Galio as he scales with ap, and health it has great synergy with other tank items for this same reason building tank/health gets you more ap.
Armor
Zhonya's is a must build item on many mages and galio is not an exception, the ap and armor this item gives are good and its passive Stasis effect can be really clutch for baiting enemies or dodging major ultimates like Miss Fortunes Ultimate Bullet Time for example.
This will be Galios main antiheal item every game, galios cc can proc the extra antiheal with ease and its thorn damage works well with a permaslowing champ like Galio. It also has one of the cheaper antiheal components with Bramble Vest at 800 gold. The item overall has some great armor and health stats to buff up your Shield of Durand passive shield as it scales with health. Build this item into teams with any healing, I would recommend building this item almost every game because antiheal is almost a necessity and its thorn passive is excellent.
Randuin's Omen is a solid anti-AD item, it has the highest armor stats along with a decent amount of hp and ability haste, its passive reduces auto attack damge to you and it's passive is a small group slow with reduced attack and crit damage.
This is a decent item to use when facing mixed damage teams, its shield can be helpful in teamfights as it might keep you long enough to use another spell which can single-handedly change the fight.
Magic Resist
This is another common item I build on Galio very frequently, move speed is very helpful on Galio to help make most use out of his Shield of Durand. While channelling Shield of Durand you take reduced magic damage which allows you to stack up the item passive while taking as little damage as possible, giving you move speed and 25% reduced magic damage for the fight.
This is an item I build less frequently as it is quite situational. It can be helpful into cc chaining teams, as its passive can throw them off and will force them to use more resources to stop you. Its ability haste, AP and mr stats are pretty good.
This is a decent item to use when facing mixed damage teams, its shield can be helpful in teamfights as it might keep you long enough to use another spell which can single-handedly change the fight.
Miscellaneous
Cosmic is a situational item on Galio its stats are great and its passive is good but it isnt really what Galio needs with this build. Cosmics passive is similar to phase rush which doesnt work great on Galio because after his main combo you dont need much help sticking to the enemies. In the rare situation you are struggling to chase down enemies after you cc them this item is good.
This is a rare buy if an enemy is really fed, if you can survive long enough while near them, they will have 20% reduced tenacity which will increase Shield of Durand taunt and other teammate's cc duration if the enemy has no form of tenacity this can give them negative tenacity, increasing cc durations past their base amount. Its health and ability haste are impressive for a price of 2500 gold.
Boots
These boots are great into high AD champs. These boots reduce all incoming AD damage by 12% which can really improve your survivability. This anti-AD damage is increased significantly when paired with Frozen Heart.
These boots are great into teams with long duration cc abilities (excluding airbornes) as it gives you 30% tenacity (which reduces the duration of cc and slows rather than the effectiveness of slows as Boots of Swiftness do).
These boots give higher move speed than other boots, which is helpful for tanks and melee characters. The move speed increase can help secure your taunt Shield of Durand and reduces the effectiveness of slows by 20% which can be effective into team with slows.
Abilities
P:Colossal Smash
Mana=0 Cooldown=5 Effect Radius=250
INNATE: Periodically, Galio's next basic attack is empowered to have an uncancellable windup and deal 15 − 200 (based on level) (+ 100% AD) (+ 50% AP) (+ 60% bonus magic resistance) modified magic damage to the target and all enemies near them.
Q:Winds of War
Mana=70/75/80/85/90 Cooldown=12/11.5/11/10.5/10 Effect Radius=150
ACTIVE: Galio creates two windblasts 250 units to either side of him that arc out before converging to the target location, dealing 70/105/140/175/210(+75% AP) magic damage to all enemies they pass through.
When the blasts meet, the gusts form a tornado that persists for 2 seconds, slowly moving forward and dealing 2.5%(+ 1% per 100 AP) of target's maximum health magic damage every 0.5 seconds to enemies within the area. The damage based on the target's health ratio is capped at 150 against monsters.
Winds of War will cast at max range if cast beyond that.
W:Shield of Durand
Mana=50 Cooldown=18/17.5/17/16.5/16 Effect Radius=175-350
PASSIVE: Galio gains Anti-Magic Bulwark, and restores it after 12 seconds without taking damage.
ANTI-MAGIC BULWARK: Gain a 7.5/9/10.5/12/13.5% of maximum health shield that absorbs magic damage.
ACTIVE: Galio charges for up to 3 seconds, slowing himself by 15%, and gaining 20/25 /30/35/40% (+ 5% per 100 AP) (+ 8% per 100 bonus magic resistance)magic damage reduction and half of that amount as physical damage reduction; charging increases Shield of Durand's radius, damage and taunt duration over the first 2 seconds of the channel.
Shield of Durand can be recast within the duration, and does so automatically afterwards or when interrupted.
RECAST: Galio refreshes the damage reduction for 2 seconds and deals 20/35/50/65/80 (+30% AP) to 60/105/150/195/240 (+90% AP) magic damage to nearby enemy champions (based on channel time), as well as taunts them for 0.5 − 1.5 (based on channel time) seconds, setting their movement speed to a static 60 for the same duration.
E:Justice Punch
Mana=50 Cooldown=12/11/10/9/8 Cast Time=0.4
ACTIVE: During the cast time, Galio steps backwards in the opposite direction. He then dashes to the target location until he hits an enemy champion or terrain.
Galio deals 90/130/170/210/250 (+90% AP) magic damage to enemies he passes through, reduced by 50% against non-champions, and knocks them up for 0.75 seconds as well as reveals them for the same duration.
Justice Punch will cast at max range if cast beyond that.
R:Hero's Entrance
Mana=100 Cooldown=200/180/160 Effect Radius=650
ACTIVE: Galio prepares to make an entrance, channeling for 2.75 seconds and designating the target allied champion's location at the time of cast as his landing spot. Additionally, he resets Shield of Durand's passive shield for himself and grants it to all allied champions within the area for 5 seconds.
After channeling for 1.25 seconds, he gains crowd control immunity for the remaining duration, becomes untargetable, and leaps into the air for 0.85 seconds before dashing to his destination over 0.25 seconds. Afterwards, he lands and becomes targetable again, dealing 150/250/350 (+70% AP) magic damage to all nearby enemies upon impact, knocking them back 100 units over 0.75 seconds, and remaining in place for 0.4 seconds.

Tips

P:Colossal Smash
Galios passive is one of his main consistent sources of damage between his abilities cooldowns. It does AoE damage which helps jungle clear and it scales with MR similar to Shield of Durand which is an excellent way to do more damage while getting more tanky from MR items, instantly increasing the value for any piece of MR you buy.
Q:Winds of War
Galios Q ability Winds of War, this is galios main damaging ability and farming tool. When using this ability try to use it on a stationary or CC'd target so you get full value of its max health magic damage. It is best to use it after a fully charged Shield of Durand because it has the longest stun timer in your kit.
W:Shield of Durand
This is your main teamfighting ability on Galio, it provides a lot of tankiness and cc. This ability has one of Galios most diverse set of scalings since it scales with Ap, Health and MR. While channelling this ability, at max rank it will reduce your incoming magic damage by 40% base and incoming physical damage by 20% base. Later on in games depending on how you itemize can increase this by a large amount, making him incredibly tanky in teamfights. Its passive magic shield scales with health, the ratio increasing to 13,5% health from 7.5% as it increases in level. Having a high passive shield increases the effectiveness of your ultimate ability Hero's Entrance, due to the passive shield being shared to all in its radius.
E:Justice Punch
This is Galios only gap closing ability (which it is not very good at doing), It can be used before or after Shield of Durand taunt but make sure if you are cc'ing them that it is in the AoE of q Winds of War. This ability is good engage when coming out of bushes to surprise enemies. It is important that if you use it first,make sure you use the cc time to position for an inescapable Shield of Durand taunt.
R:Hero's Entrance
Galio's ultimate ability has a lot of potential to win teamfights, save your teammates or begin counterattacks. If all 9 other players are in its area of effect, all enemies will receive damage, get knocked up for 0.75 seconds and all teammates will gain your Shield of Durand passive magic shield. This alone makes this ultimate threatening, unfortunately it has a very long cast time and most enemies will run out of its area of effect before this happens. It is important this ability is used in situations where the enemy lose something by leaving (like an objective or kill) or where they are forced to stay in its radius.
Pathing

Top Side
Blue buff - wolves - gromp (use smite)(use pots after kill)
Path bot river and try to get a gank bot lane with Ghost.
Get Bot scuttle crab after (save smite if not needed), try a gank mid or continue to red side either starting red or raptors.
Finish full clear into a top gank or a back.
Blue buff - gromp (use smite) - wolves (use pots after kill)
Path to raptors and try to get a gank mid lane with Flash.
Get Top scuttle crab after (save smite if not needed), try a gank top or continue to red side either starting red or raptors.

Finish full clear into a top gank or a back.

Caution
Keep in mind that at all times you are in risk of an invade or your farm being stolen, in case of an invade try to bait the enemy jungler deeper into the jungler and cc them until your nearest laner can help.
If your farm is stolen try to gank or take some of the enemies camps to try make back the missing gold and xp.
Ganking

How does Galio even gank?

Typically, it is much easier when lane is pushed up to your teammates tower and if they have some reliable gank set-up but Galios cc alone can be enough to help your teammate kill the enemy.
Ghosting early to reduce enemies time to react is good, try to abuse fog of war while passing too. When approaching the enemies try position yourself so they can not avoid your taunt even with a flash.

This is an example of how to block an enemies path so not even a flash can help them, into most adc's it will force them to give up and tank the taunt or run back into your bot lane and their cc.
Flashing/hexflashing over a wall into a Justice Punch, Colossal Smash, Shield of Durand into a Winds of War does the trick when you're assisted by a teammate.

Don't be afraid to flash/hexflash into every gank, the runes have this in mind and it is an integral part to getting successful ganks.

Where to use hex flash?


Here are some common spots that can be used on both sides of the map. It is important to learn how to use these spots affectively, learning these spots will guarantee kills every game.
Conclusion

Is Galio jungle a troll pick?


In my opinion the pick shows some promise, 12.13's q damage buff has increased Galios clear speeds and overall damage and despite 12.14's refill pot nerfs his clear is still healthy enough due to the q buff. With future changes and improvement, I think he could at least be viable in to high AP teams.

Thanks to all who view this guide and have taken the time to read, I appreciate all discussion and comments. Hopefully as a group we can make this pick more viable and potentially one day one person will pop up in a HappyChimeNoises video, but I will admit that is ambitious.

Note: I'm currently experimenting with other potential builds and will update my guide/matchups with the seperate builds in mind when I am happy with whatever else I come up with. As of now i have the majority of my predator runes information in the guide and am liking it more than the glacial runes becuase flash on Galio feels inconsistent and clunky compared to ghost. I will see in the future and will make many different changes to my build so I hope any readers can understand the rough edges of my guide :)
