Champion Build Guide
Intro
MY NEW Tiger Udyr Jungle Guide is here! I go into all the Details about Builds, Runes and Synergies to make you the greatest Duelist ever!
Hello fellow Junglers!
This is my Udyr Guide for the Udyr Rework 2022. This guide is mainly about the way to build Udyr and how to use his basic kit in the jungle.
I like playing Udyr because I can actually play him in so many ways. You can build your way through many matchups and even around counters.
Udyr has no too flashy mechanics like dashes or wall scaling. His Skill Ceiling comes from how well your Auto Attack Move is and how well you "Stance Dance" (see below).
The rework rly brought him into a great State - Happy Times :).
My Builds are following 2 Philosophies in this Guide Dueling=D and Takedown=TD:
- D = Dueling Path - it will make you a Duelist with good DPS and Sustain as well as measures like Armor Shred / Anti Heal against Melee Enemies
- TD = Takedown Path - this path turns you into a Hunter with Damage Enhancement and good Mobility / Tankiness to go for low Health / Vulnerable Targets and take them down, even behind Enemy Lines. You want to be be as tanky and resistant to CC as much as possible and inflict high Impact Damage on Contact with the Target as well as generate Damage Opportunities for your Teammates so these Targets are taken out quickly - before they can escape or retaliate.
For a comparison between old and new Udyr have a look at this Video by Vars:

Udyr's Abilities and Mechanics
Abilities - Udyr is built differently!
Have a quick overview over his new Abilites with this Video from Remus:
A nice Overview about Newdyr by Coach Blaker:
Instead of an Ultimate and 3 Basic Abilities, Udyr has 4 Stances in his Kit as well as one Passive Ability.
These are as follows:
- Passive Ability:
Bridge Between with the two inherent Abilities:
- Awakened Spirit
and - Monk Training
- Awakened Spirit
- Q Ability:
Wilding Claw
- W Ability:
Iron Mantle
- E Ability:
Blazing Stampede
- R Ability:
Wingborne Storm
General things to consider:
Stances:
- The Stance Actives have a 4 sec Duration, normal and awakened
- Cloud Dragon Soul Speed Buff is activated on every one of Udyr' Ability Casts - making it rly strong on him
- After being used, every Stance has a 6 sec Cooldown.
- Udyr can awaken his last use Stance while it is on Cooldown.
- The Awakening Passive has a 50-20 sec Cooldown, being reduced with leveling up
- Activating a normal Stance puts all other Stances on a 2 sec intermittent Cooldown
- Activating an awakened Stance puts all other Stances on a 1 sec intermittent Cooldown
- Activating Awakened Q and R Stances will end their Normal Predecesors Active Effects - in case of Q the attack speed Buff and the passive on hit damage, in case of R the AoE Effect. So in some cases like clearing Jungle Camps early on, you may want to use up the full Normal Stance Duration before activating the Awakened Form for max efficiency.
The W Stance works differently in that the two Active Shields will stack.
Awakening a Stance will always make you lose the 2 Active Auto-Attack Effects if you have not used them before.
- The Single Stance Cooldown (6 sec) and the intermittent Cooldown (2 / 1 sec) are affected by Ability Haste. The Awakened Spirit Passive is not.
- Stances that are already on Cooldown are affectec by the intermittent Cooldown in the Background so to speak
- Example:
- Q ticking down from 6 sec
- Q reaches 1 sec
- now W is activated
- Q jumps back to 2 sec CD as the intermittent Stance Cooldown is applied]
- now W reaches 4 sec and E is activated
- W still ticks down from 4 sec since the intermittent Stance Cooldown is applied in the Background of the Single Stance Cooldown and not added to it.
Passive Autos:
- Activating a Stance gives Udyr 2 Enhanced Autos with increased Attack Speed
- Every passive Auto Attack used reduces the Awakening CD by 5%
- The passive Auto Attack Buff has a 4 sec Duration
- The passive Auto Attacks are spent on jungle plants - you can get Awakening up faster when using this frequently in the Jungle.
Active Autos:
- Activating Stances Q, W and R gives Udyr 2 enhanced Autos with the respective Stance Buff
- Activating E Stance gives Udyr's Autos a stun effect with a per Target Cooldown
- Opposite to Old Udyr on Newdyr 1 Point in Q will stay relevant on Phoenix - the Awakened Q HP Shred Scales with AP and General Levels rather then AD and Q Levels.
Patch 12.18 gave normal Q and A-Q Active Autos the same Attack Range Bonus and reduced the cost to 20 Mana, making the 1 Point even more worthwhile! - Do not Skip W! - W Scales with AP, HP, AD - in Form of Items and Runes as well as getting buffed by
Shield Bash and
Revitalize. It is the best Sustain you could wish for!
- The Stance Auto Attack Buffs last until used
- The Q and R Stance Auto Attacks are not spent on jungle plants - W Stance AA's are. So you can get a small Heal from hitting Plants with W!
- Nice to know: The Awakened Q Auto Attacks scale with levels and AP. So even one Point in Q is worth something with Phoenix Udyr later on.
A word about Summoner's:
- With Movement Speed based Builds - E max 2nd, Chemtank, MS Runes - you want to prefer
Flash
- With rather immobile Damage / Tank Setups you want to take
Ghost for better Sticking Power.
General Mechanics Concepts:

- Zoning: Preventing the Enemy Champion from entering a certain Area around you, that you influence with your Ability Ranges on Damage / CC Abilities while they are not on CD
- Tether / Autospacing: You keeping an Enemy Zoning you "at Arms Length" - staying at the fixed Distance to him, that his Ability Range / AA Range (for Melee Duels) demands - by staying just outside the Range "Circle".
You move as if there was a staff fixed to your heads in between you - always at the same distance.- For more insight into these "Spacing" Concepts (Zoning and Tether) have a look at this Guide by Today on the Super Server:

Udyr's Mechanics
Udyr's Sticking Moves
Sticking correctly, together with Udyr's Stance Dance (see below) is extremely Important on Udyr.
You don't want to just right click an opponent and let Udyr walk after him.
You want to combine Attack Commands and Movement Commands for maximum Efficiency.
There are 2 main Parts to good Moving and Fighting on Udyr!
Part 1: The Animation Cancel
An Auto Attack consists of 3 Parts:
Wind Up
[==========]Attack Hit
[==========]Wind down
[==========]
- NOW, if you just right click or Attack Move onto an Opponent, even if you reach him and start hitting, your Champion will go through all Phases of the Auto Attack.
- BUT - as you can see - the Wind Down does nothing for us. It has no Damage!
It is wasting Time.
How can we use this time better? ... YES - by moving in between Attacks.
- So - to correctly Auto Attack Move you input a Movement Command right after your Attack hits the opponent (that means your Hand, Hammer, Sword smacks the Enemy etc. or, in case of Ranged Champs - your Projectile leaves your Weapone - )
- and therefore deny the Wind down its time!
You CANCEL THE ANIMATION!
- Have a look at this AA Analysis by LoL Analyst for insights into the Concept:
- I would advise you to turn on Damage Numbers in League, so you get a Visual Feedback when your Attack has dealt its Damage. Otherwise you might "Choke" the Auto Attack by Canceling too early (as LoL Analyst shows above)
Click here for a Screenshot of the needed Option.
Part 2: The Stance Dance
- For the most efficient Usage of Udyr's Kit his Abilities have to be used in certain successions and patterns. This is called "Stance Dance"
- To get an idea of this have a look at my Intro Videos on Stance Usage.
- Stance Dance Examples:"The Rundown"
- Approach an Enemy (that moves away / kites you)
- Cast W for some Damage Mitigation on the way
- Cast E to rush towards them
- Use A-E to dodge CC and either AA-Stun them or...
- ... if they are just out of reach - "grab" them with R ...
- ... to follow them until your next E is up for the final AA-Stun
- If you did not use A-E before, you can use A-R to stick even more before you move onto them and stun them with your final
E
"The Tiger Burst"
- Approach an Enemy you want to duel
- Cast W for some Damage Mitigation on the way
- Cast Q into 2x AA for Damage
- Use A-Q into 2x AA for more Damage
- Cast W into 2x AA for Sustain
- Situational: Use A-W for extra Sustain, use E to stop Ability Wind-Ups on the Enemy Champion
"The Tiger Trade"
- Approach an Enemy you want to duel
- Cast W for some Damage Mitigation on the way
- Cast Q into 4x AA for complete use of the active AS-Steroid
- Use A-Q into 2x AA
- Cast W into 2x AA for Sustain with some leftover AS-Steroid from A-Q
- Situational: Use A-W for extra Sustain, use E to stop Ability Wind-Ups on the Enemy Champion
Items
Item Philosophy
These are the main Items for the above mentiond Build Paths Dueling and Takedown.
Sunfire Aegis
![]() |
Sunfire Aegis is your main Tank Item for Mobility and Dueling. It gives you Tank Stats, HP Scaled AoE Damage and Tenacity. Lots of good Stuff for Udyr. I do not include its Brother ![]() |
Turbo Chemtank
Trinity Force
![]() |
Trinity Force is my own favorite atm. It Scales up your AS, AD and Movement Speed, making you a threatening Hybrid Damage Force against Squishier Targets. They can't Itemize easily against you regarding defensive Stats. Udyr is one of the best Sheen Proc Users in the Game, giving him even more DPS with his Stance Dance. Also the new W gives Lifesteal on its Autos, so the Sheen Proc will give you great Sustain. Even more so with Shield Bash or other Damage Enhancement Runes. Trinity Force has great Synergy with ![]() |
Demonic Embrace
![]() |
This is your main AP Scaling Damage Option. Newdyr can use it so well with his 2 R Rotations with AoE AP Damage and Slow. It will stack Conqueror and give you great Sustain and Damage overall. It works great with Sunfire's Mythic Passive and Overgrowth for more HP Stacking. As an alternative AP Scaling Item, if you need more Mobility, ![]() |
Dead Man's Plate
![]() |
Great Item for Mobility. Synergizes well with Chemtank for even more Impact Damage. You can use them together or use the Slows after each other. The Impact Damage Scales with Base AD, so you can't enhance it directly, but you work in Runes like Shield Bash or Cheap Shot or general Auto Attack Enhancements like Sheen. Try to dodge CC with its MS to not lose Momentum Stacks. Remember it is not a Dueling Item - you will give up benefits like ![]() ![]() |
Force of Nature
![]() |
Another great Item for Mobility. Gives you MS when getting hit by Magic Damage or CC. Each instance stacks up the Passive. At 6 Stacks Magic Damage also gets reduced by 25% on you.![]() It is also a Consideration when stacking HP is bad - against Vayne / Gnar etc. |
Thornmail
Randuin's Omen
![]() |
Very good Item for Dueling against Hypercarries / Crit Users. You reduce their Damage on you through the Passive as well as the Active and it gives you another Slow on Top for more Sticking Power. |
Spirit Visage
![]() |
Another nice Item Choice when Dueling and Building Lifesteal / Vamp or using your W in General. It will boost any Shields and Healing Sources you get. It will not make you more mobile though. |
Frozen Heart
![]() |
Great Teamfight Choice against several Enemy Autoattackers. It is cheap, gives you Mana Sustain and great Tank Stats plus an AS Debuff around you. Also Synergizes very well with Fimbulwinter. |
Abyssal Mask
Gargoyle Stoneplate
Warmog's Armor
![]() |
I would call Warmog's a "Buffer" Item for tanky Udyr Builds. It allows you to go for Tanky Damage Items without HP and not lose out too much on HP Scaling anyways. If you go for a Sunfire Build like this for example, because you want more Damage Output: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Now at this Point, to gain some more HP Scaling on Sunfire and Demonic, Warmog's is just great. Not even counting in its great Regen Passive! Another Option at this point would be ![]() Just be careful building too much HP against HP Shredding Comps! |
Boots
Mercury Treads
These are your Anti CC Option. You will not need them when taking Sunfire Aegis + 1 of the Tenacity Runes Legend: Tenacity or
Unflinching.
They are good with Triforce / Chemtank though to rly stick to targets.
Boots of Swiftness
Plated Steelcaps
Ionian Boots of Lucidity
They are your Utility Option. You want to buy them as soon as possible to get your Smite CD down for faster Smite Usage - you will get your transformed Smite faster. They will also reduce your other Summoner's CD. They work together with Cosmic Insight.
Also, they give you Ability Haste on your Stance CDs (see Chapter Abilities and Mechanics) but will not affect the Cooldown of your Passive!
They are also an Option against Casters like Aatrox or Sylas, where you want to go for Duels with quick Stance Rotations and don't need the AA Damage Reduction of Plated Steelcaps that much.

General Runes Advise:
Runes:
-Conqueror for Scaling Damage and Sustain
-Press the Attack for Burst on Squishy Targets or Shred on Tanks. Not great against Duelists.
-Phase Rush for even more Mobility after a Combo + Slow Resistance
-Triumph /
Treasure Hunter - increased Income on Takedown Focus
-Legend: Alacrity increased DPS for Dueling / Takedown Rune Pages
-Legend: Tenacity /
Unflinching for Anti CC / Anti Kite
-Coup de Grace against Squishy Teams.
-Last Stand for Damage increase when getting low - good for Dueling with Lifesteal / Conqueror and Mobility Pages to deal increased Damage after taking Damage while approaching a Target.
-Shield Bash increased Resistances and AD after getting a Shield for Fimbulwinter Builds and Dueling Builds with LS / Conqueror
-Revitalize for Heal / Shield Synergy with LS, Conqueror, Shield Bash, W Ability, Fimbulwinter, Sterak's, Stoneplate etc. - it will not increase HP Regen and Vamp!
-Taste of Blood - for Dueling Setups with Scaling some AD / AP, Synergizes with Revitalize / Spirit Visage
-Conditioning for Resistance Scaling when building a lot of Tank Items
-Overgrowth for HP Scaling on Shield Bash, Demonic Embrace, Sunfire, Chemtank on Mobility / Dueling Builds.
-Bone Plating against Burst Combos (rather Nieche for Jungle - if your Jungle Matchup demands it or if you want to Prio an enemy Aatrox / Riven Lane for example)
-Cheap Shot - Damage Enhancement works with E, R, Chemtank, Dead Man's Plate, Rhanduins Omen. Feeds into Conqueror, but not into LS. Gets Enhanced by Coup de Grace / Last Stand.
-Zombie Ward /
Eyeball Collection - for fast AD / AP Scaling when ahead, feeds into FF, CQ, Blade of the ruined King LS. Indirectly Supports PTA, Last Stand, Coup de Grace.
-Gathering Storm for Late Game raw Damage Scaling for Dueling / Takedown / FF Moblity Builds
-Absolute Focus Damage Scaling for faster Clears and for initiating Trades with Dueling Builds, escpecially for with Waterwalking - think Scuttle Fights. You have great HP Sustain, so you can get it back up rather frequently.
-Nimbus Cloak /
Celerity /
Waterwalking / Relentless Hunter for Mobility Builds
-Manaflow Band for Mana Sustain in Fimbulwinter Builds
- For Small Runes (Stat Modifiers):- For Jungle I would take AS, AdD, AR most of the time.
- Pick MR if the Enemy Team has an AP Jgl, + AP Mid / Top.
- On Lethal Tempo Build AdD, AdD, HP / Resistance is fine.

- Select my Build File on your Hard-Drive Location and click OK.
- The Build is now available in your Client and In-Game
I collect Off-Meta Build Ideas for my Champion Roster in my Experimental Builds Guide! Have a look!
As explained in the Intro Chapter, I categorize the Builds into the Categories:
Starting Items:
- Take Red Smite against Close Range Burst and Melee Damage Dealers. Take Blue Smite against Ranged or for Nimbus Cloak Synergy.
- If you go for mobile Takedown Builds with E max over W, take
Flash, especially if the Enemy can scale Walls well. If you go for more immobile Trading Builds against Melee Comps, take
Ghost.
Early Items:
- normally you want to get Brown Boots and Bami Cinder first off, optionally Dark Seal, then go into the other Items of your Build. With Ionian's you normally want to finish them first to profit from their Early Game CDR Power.
Do not take
Magical Footwear in your Rune Setup if you plan on going Ionian's early on! Also, if you ever go Predator - dont take the Rune either!
- You can go
Dark Seal on your first Back. It gives you faster clears, better dueling and ganking as well as Damage Scaling if you have a good start.
Boots:
- Boots in all Builds are situational. Mercury's Treads are Tenacity Overkill in Sunfire Builds though, together with the Standard Runes even more.
With active Items you want to get Ionian's if you do not need additional Defense / Mobility from the other Options.
- Be aware, that Boots of Swiftness and Unflinching decrease the Amount of Slow you receive, while Tenacity reduces the Duration of Slows.
Anti Heal:
- get Bramble + Steelcaps against Enemies that Autoattack you a lot, get Executioner's against Enemies that avoid you / use Abilities / you want to all in.
Be aware, that the Thornmail Return Damage feeds into Omnivamp!
CC / Kite:
- get Quicksilver against Suppression Ults (Morde, WW...) or high CC amounts.
- Your Options against high Mobility / Kiting are:
- You can always go full Tank after your Mythic Item. In General you want to avoid dying as much as possible when ahead, while going for some more damage for Comeback Plays when behind.
- You want to consider building
Blade of the Ruined King and maybe also
Sterak's Gage for
Phage Passiveagainst Enemies you go toe to toe with .
- Look for Synergies for Mobility / Anti Kite in Mobility oriented Builds and Sustain / De-Buff / Damage Synergies in Dueling Builds.
To import the Item Sets after you downloaded them:
- Go to your Collection
- Click on Items
- Click on the Downward Arrow Button called "Import Item Sets" left of the Search

Dueling Builds
These are the current Meta Builds around Sunfire...
...for Udyr plus some variations by me. The standard Build is mostly used with Conqueror [CQ] as Keystone and Resolve / Sorcery as Secondary Tree.
- Good HP / Damage Scaling with some Sustain on Sunfire / Demonic / Conqueror
- You can reach extremely high Tenacity / Movement Speed Values, which in Conjunction with you Awakened E can make you almost CC Immune through the late Game.
- You are a decent Duelist early on with the Standard Build after getting Sunfire. You can improve on your Dueling Power with
Blade of the Ruined King and
Thornmail later on - getting BORK is not that easy when behind though. I would advise this option as Duelist Build against Melee Teams and not against Mobile Teams.
Sunfire Phoenix Build 1A/1A_2:
- The Standard Meta Build and its Fimbulwinter Variation! Good Tankiness, some Sustain, great Tenacity.

Vayne etc.). Then Building HP might hurt you, and you rather go for items like
Frozen Heart,
Wit's End,
Gargoyle Stoneplate. In that case, Conditioning will get you additional value out of your Build.
Unflinching might also be a good anit-kite measure in these cases. Do not take
Overgrowth against such Teams!
Inside Tree Variations:
Legend: Alacrity for more Dueling Power
Coup de Grace - Against Squishy Teams, that can't kite you too hard
Overgrowth - Max. HP Scaling (Aegis / Demonic) against late game comps

Sunfire Phoenix Build 1C
- This one is approaching the Chemtank Category, while still giving the Tankiness and Tenacity of the Sunfire Builds. It is great into mixed Teams of High Mobility and Melee Damage (think a Comp like:Aatrox,
Kindred,
Ekko,
Zeri+
Nautilus for example - You need to be able to take some burst, but also not be kited and locked down too hard).
ThePhase Rush Runes from the Chemtank Section can also work here.

Takedown Builds:
My Favorites - Patch 12.18 gave W less HP Scaling but more Lifesetal - Sterak's / Triforce are great with that. Udyr is the best Sheen User in the game amongside Trundle, so the Damage Output with good Stance Dancing is just insane!
These Builds are great against squishier Slayers as well as mobile carries / supports.
Chemtank Phoenix Build 1A/B
These Builds expand on Udyr as a Freight Train Juggernaut - being very fast on the way to his target, then stopping them in their tracks and doing very decent damage - as in Bruiser :). They don't have the highest Dueling Power, but great Chase Potential and make you stick to your target like glue.
Build 1B offers a bit more Dueling and Damage. You can considerNashor's Tooth or
Blade of the Ruined King with PTA Builds.

Matchups
General Matchup Tips:
- For lists of all Counters and Synergies have a look at the Ressources list and my Threats Scale above.
- For specific Matchup Guides have a look at the enemy Champion's Mobalytics Page and Counterstats.net Page for Advise
- You can also use the LoLAlytics Matchup Stats via their Search Engine from Udyr's Main Page.
Just go to his page there and then enter your enemy champion matchup into the Search bar in the upper right corner. On the right side of the list you can click on the "vs." Matchup result.

It is also always a good Idea to watch some High Elo Games of the Matchup you are interested in via Youtube.

Udyr's Jungle Clear
Basics:
- Most of the time you want to do a 6 Camp Clear as shown on Jungler.gg.
- Do my Ward Swap Trick in the beginning to get Sweeper rdy for Ganks and protect your Buff from Invades.
Video from my Youtube Channel on how to do it:
- Always try to spot the Enemy Jungler's Starting Point from paying attention to which Enemy Lane is late to Lane after their Leash.
For a Guide about Basic Tracking watch this Video by ProGuides:
- While you clear, train yourself to always move the camera to your closest lane while moving from one Camp to the other (in your downtime so to say).
- In General, look at the Minimap every 10 seconds.
You can use a Metronome at 6 bpm for that. Look here for an Online Version: LINK.
For a little Guide about Map awareness, have a look at this Video from my Youtube Channel:
- Whenever you are not behind, get a Pink Ward on every Back to protect your Jungle / Lanes. You also want to get Sweeper early on for ganking / Clearing Enemy Vision in your Jungle. Only swap back to Trinket Wards if your Team gets very behind and you need the Vision Protection.
- Practice to always do "Cross Map Actions" - Whenever you spot the Enemy Jungler doing something on the other side of the map condition yourself to do sth too.
Invade his Camps, Gank, get Tower / Herald / Drake etc.

Now to the routes. There are several Clear Routes Udyr can take.
Full Clear - Red Start by Phylaris. Ability Sequence: Q-R-W-E
(I support the W early Approach for a much healthier Build and all 4 Abilities at LvL 4 - gives ouy much more Versatility and Sustain in oncoming Ganks / Fights)
Full Clear - Blue Start by Wenwin. Ability Sequence: Q-R-R-E
5 Camp Clear - Raptor Start by Der Bestimmer (that's me :) ). Ability Sequence: Q-W-E
A thing I saw in a Korean Replays is to split your first Clear into 2, doing 1 Jungle Quadrant as I show in this Video, but then recall, getting Dark Seal for a Level 3 Scuttle Fight. It is important to track the Enemy Jungler's Start if you want to confront him early on in this way.
General Lesson on Season 12 3 Camp Clear Routes by Virkayu. They are an ALTERNATIVE, not a REPLACEMENT for other clears. Clears are always situational!
-You use 3 Camp Clears against Ganking Junglers for earlier Map Presence and Counter Ganking or for early Invades against Farming Junglers.
- You can use a 3 Camp Clear: Buff - Buff + Gromp into Scuttle / Gank as you would with Tiger Udyr for a more aggressive Start. Level Q-W-E in these Cases and get R at Level 4!
- Alternatively you can use the Quadrant Clear Approach as mentioned above, getting Dark Seal on you first Back after clearing 1 full Quadrant. Level R-W-E in these Cases.
Another Guide by Virkayu featuring Udyr on my Triforce Build (funny coincident :) ), covering pathing and playing from behind:
- Most of the time you want to do a 6 Camp Clear as shown on Jungler.gg.
