Volibear is a tanky Juggernaut with strong all-in potential in lane.

Volibear is not particularly popular, especially considering the fact that he is planned a rework very soon, so consider this a preemptive ready-to-update guide on the "New" Volibear Support.
Overview: Pros/Cons Back to Top
+ Excellent all-in potential & Gank Setups
+ Naturally Tanky
+ Surprisingly Good Damage
+ Sustain in Fights
+ Easy to Play
+ Can disable Towers

Volibear Support has a very simple gameplan. In lane, you loaf around, acting like a bear for a while before you suddenly run at an out-of-position enemy ADC or Support really fast, stunning them with your Thundering Smash as your ADC follows up on your engage.
- Predictable Gameplay
- Kiteable
- Ineffective from behind

Sadly, this gameplan is messed up by the fact that you may take substantial damage before you even reach your enemy, or you may be slowed and rooted to the point you cannot reach them. If you bring Nimbus Cloak and Hextech Flashtraption however, you can a substantial speed boost and surprise factor that may help you complete your mission.
Overview: Summoners Back to Top
Flash: Nearly all champions need Flash as it is the most flexible summoner spell in the game. Volibear doesn't need it AS much, but he still has no forms of dashes meaning Flash is still incredibly useful for him. If you plan on bringing Hextech Flashtraption, then you need to bring Flash anyway.
Exhaust: A safer pick that scales well into the game. Ideal against burst or a particularly fed opponent, alongside having a slow to help setup kills.
Ignite: A summoner spell best used for lanes you believe you are going to win as it allows you to finish off opponents after an all-in.
Ghost: Some people may feel compelled to bring Ghost on Volibear but it's usually unnecessary, especially considering its 3 Minute cooldown. Overall, an unnecessary rune.
RUNES Back to Top
There are two main rune choices for Volibear Support, one for a massive speed-boost, and one for general tankiness.
Runes: Inspiration Back to Top

We take the Inspiration tree because it provides the best tools to help Volibear engage in lane.
Prototype: Omnistone is an incredibly unpopular Keystone which revolves around randomness. Now for a Support Volibear, your major keystone is not all that important. The focus of the Inspiration tree is bringing Hextech Flashtraption anyway, but Prototype: Omnistone is not even a bad keystone and, instead, requires you to play around what you get. It's also not entirely random as you are more likely to get certain keystones depending on the situation. Getting a keystone like Predator essentially enables you to perform an unexpected roam at some point during the game.
The general opinion on Hexflash is usually pretty mixed. Some do not like it, believing it to be fairly useless and essentially baiting you into making bad engages whenever it's off cooldown. Others see its usefulness, whether it's enabling you to take creative flank and ganks, or helping you escape bad situations. For someone like Volibear who has a much more forgiving all-in, due to his passive, whiffing Hextech Flashtraption a single time will not be the end of the world, and you'll see much more usefulness out of it than you may expect.
Biscuit Delivery helps with your sustain in lane, essentially functioning as free potions. If for some reason you don't find a use for them, you can even sell them for a bit of additional gold.
Cosmic Insight is a general rune of deceptive usefulness. It reduces the cooldown of your abilities, your items, even your summoners. Due to this, Volibear can make more frequent uses of his abilities, and even helps with reducing the cooldown of items such as Turbo Chemtank.
Nimbus Cloak represents the second part of this two part combo involving Hexflash and Nimbus Cloak. The speedboost you get from Nimbus Cloak is equivalent to the one you get from smite even though Hexflash has a substantially shorter cooldown.
Celerity applies to nearly everything you have, including your Q, Nimbus Cloak, your items. The speed boost it provides is fairly substantial.
The shards Volibear can bring are fairly flexible. In general, you want to bring defensive shards depending on what support/adc combination you are facing.
Runes: Resolve Back to Top

We take the Resolve tree because there are many runes that enhance Volibear's survivability.
Aftershock effectively allows Volibear to run into multiple enemies, flip a single one of them, and survive thanks to the combination of extra defenses from Aftershock, and his passive which provides him a crazy burst in heals. It is fairly standard for your average tanky-engage support.
Font of Life provides additional healing to your allies for anyone you CC. This would include your ADC autoing your flipped target, making you more likely to win the 2v2.
A choice between Conditioning or Bone Plating. In general, Bone Plating is better in lane while Conditioning aids in Voli's tankiness outside of lane.
Ideal for late game in order to add to your bulkiness. Unflinching is also a good choice for Tenacity whereas the additional healing/shielding with Revitalize isn't terrible, but doesn't add up to much over the course of a game.
I go on a small rant about Hextech Flashtraption in the above section so read my thoughts there if you wish. It is less effective without Nimbus Cloak but it is still undoubtedly a great tool for Volibear.
Cosmic Insight falls under the same category.
The shards Volibear can bring are fairly flexible. In general, you want to bring defensive shards depending on what support/adc combination you are facing.
Volibear is fun and easy. Good luck.
