Introduction

Hi Guys!

This guide will not be updated anymore! The items are still extremely usable, but since I no longer actively play I will no longer update this guide.

In this guide I am going to tell "my way of playing Wukong - the monkey King as solotop champion.
But please remember this is my first guide.
I finished the basement of this guide now I'll add some new things one after another

I ask you to read the build and use it first before you rate it, whether good or bad. If there are any questions or suggestions you are welcome to comment on the guide, I will answer them as good as I can!

Have fun playing Wukong and climb up to the killingspree!

For those who are going to play Wukong for the first time, here is the champion spotlight:

Wukong's Story

"Only in combat do you learn who you truly are."
-Wukong

"During the chaos of the Rune Wars, an enormous runestone was lost deep within the Plague Jungles. It remained there, untouched for centuries, emanating a potent magic which infused nearby wildlife with sentience and vitality. A group of monkeys who were particularly empowered by it came to worship the stone, and their leader - a wise sage - became convinced that he could harness its power to make the monkeys immortal. He performed an elaborate ritual, but things didn't go as he expected. The runestone was destroyed, and instead of granting immortality, it produced Kong, a monkey who carried in his heart the strength and power it had contained. Kong was driven by an unquenchable desire for greatness. He sought out every beast and monster the Plague Jungles could offer, eager to find a worthy opponent, but none offered the challenge he craved. He asked the sage for advice, and learned about a legend of hairless monkeys to the north who, with wits and might, had bent the world to their will.

Wukong left, journeying north, determined to discover if the legend was true. He crossed the Southern Wastes and then the Great Barrier. On his way, he happened upon Master Yi, who was deep in meditation. Kong asked him who the strongest warrior in the north was, and Yi told him about the League of Legends. The tale intoxicated Kong, a place where he could battle the strongest fighters in the world was, to him, paradise. Kong asked Yi to introduce him to this League, and to teach him the ways of humans, so that he could be a fitting champion. In return, he would honor Yi by using Yi's Wuju style to become the greatest warrior Runeterra had ever seen. Admiring his passion, Yi agreed, but under the condition that Kong would one day teach the lessons of Wuju to a pupil of his own. In the spirit of this agreement, he renamed Kong ''Wukong,'' and gave him a weapon suited to his unusual nature - an enchanted staff that the young Doran had crafted. The weapon was an unrivalled masterpiece. Guided by Yi, Wukong joined the League of Legends to prove himself as the best, and to show the world the true power of Wuju."

Riot games changed Wukong's lore, if you like the old or just want to know this too, here it is:

"In the Plague Jungles, Kong ruled as king. He could wield a unique, natural form of magic and he was driven by zealous ambition. The Plague Jungles were the ideal setting for fostering his growth - he thrived on challenges and flourished in adversity. However, when he had surmounted every obstacle and defeated every opponent, he grew restless. Worried that there was nothing left to overcome, he sought counsel with the monkey sage who lived behind the Grand Waterfall. The sage told him a tale of hairless monkeys to the north who, with wits and strength, bent the world to their will. Kong was overjoyed at the prospect of such worthy competition, and he immediately set out to the north, hoping that the sage's story was true.
Traveling north, he crossed the Southern Wastes and then the Great Barrier. Unaware of the League, he arrived outside the Institute of War where he found Master Yi in meditation. Kong was eager to test the strength of these northern warriors, so he challenged Yi to a duel. Intrigued by Kong, Yi decided to humor him. Within moments of his first strike, Kong knew he was no match for Yi. To be the best, he would need a mentor. He asked Yi to take him as a pupil and to show him the wonders of the northern lands. In return, he would honor Yi by becoming the greatest warrior Runeterra had ever seen. Admiring his passion, Yi agreed, but only under the condition that Kong would one day teach the lessons of Wuju to a pupil of his own. In the spirit of this agreement, he renamed Kong Wukong, and gave him a weapon suited to his unusual nature - an enchanted staff that the young Doran had crafted. The weapon was an unrivaled masterpiece. After rigorous training, Wukong joined the League of Legends to fulfill his promise and show the world the true power of Wuju."

Skill Tricks and Skill Sequence

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Crushing Blow, Wukongs Q-Skill

This skill is really nice. Wukongs next basic attack will deal bonus damage and reduce the enemy´s armor by 30% for 3 seconds just like Jarvan IV´s Dragon Strike. Furthermore the mana costs for this skill and the cooldown are pretty low so you can spam it to harras your opponent or to last hit minions.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Decoy, Wukong´s W-Skill

This skill is also awesome. After using this skill you get stealthed for 1.5 seconds and you leave a uncontrollable decoy that doesn´t move or attack.
After 1.5 seconds the decoy disappears and deals some damage but this damage is irrelevant because it does not hurt much, but still ,its a great escape skill and you can do great tricks with it.
But it´s a nice escape skill, you can do many tricks with this skill.

1. Trick

This is the easiest trick, if you get chased and your enemies are so close that they can attack you, press "w" to use Warrior Trickster and starting running in the direction of the opponents so they run away from you.
Here a hint for this trick, do this trick when you run to a bush because they might think that you are running in the bush and not away from them :)

2. Trick

This trick is a bit more complicated. Same situation like trick 1, but you don't use Warrior Trickster. Instead you press "S" to stop moving and attacking, just wait till they run away from you then run in the other direction. In every game, you have to find out, how your opponent will react on decoy, will they run away because they are thinking that you used Warrior Trickster or will they attack you because they think that you stopped moving.

3. Trick

With this trick you can block Caitlyn´s Ace in the Hole, escape from stuns and cages like Dark Binding. Grabs like Rocket Grab or just enlarge the distance to the opponent.
To block Ace in the Hole you need to be in a line with your copy and Caitlyn. Activate Warrior Trickster just before Caitlyn fires the projectile of her ultimate ability.
If you want to avoid being hit by Light Binding or Dark Binding you also need to be in a line with with Morgana or Lux for example so that their stun hits your Copy. Attention to successfully dodge Light Binding you need to change the direction of running after activating Warrior Trickster so you wont get hitten by the second stun.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Nimbus Strike, Wukong´s E-Skill

Wukong dashes on a cloud toward a target enemy and sends out images to attack up to 2 additional enemies near his target, dealing physical damage to all three targets.
It´s a nice skill to harass your opponent and in combination with Crushing Blow and Warrior Trickster you can harass him much stronger without taking any damage yourself.
Just dash to your target with Nimbus Strike, hit him with Crushing Blow and activate Warrior Trickster to get away without taking damage.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Cyclone, Wukong´s Ultimate Skill and R-Skill

Wukong's staff grows outward and he spins it around, dealing damage and knocking up enemies. Wukong gains movement speed over the duration of the spell.
When using this skill you should try to knock up all enemies in a teamfight to get more assists and you will also interrupt all their skills.
But avoid to use Cyclone as escape skill, you should use one of the Warrior Trickster-Tricks to escape or flash.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Stone Skin, Wukong´s Passive

This is a quite nice passive for initiating team fights as well as survive opposing jungler attacks, so be sure to use the advantage of the defensive bonus. In my opinion because of Stone Skin you don't need to buy Armor or Magic Resistance Items in the early game.

Runes

_____
_____

Main rune set

Greater Mark of Desolation Greater Mark of Desolation
For Marks I use 9x Greater Mark of Desolation because in combination with Crushing Blow you are able to penetrate much armor.

Greater Seal of Resilience
Armor is a must have if you jungle because you take less damage and so you can stay longer in the jungle.
_____
Greater Glyph of Shielding
Here I use 9x Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist. But why do I use "per lvl" runes instead of flat runes? The reason is that the chance to get an AP opponent is much smaller than an AD opponent. Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist give more magic resistance than Greater Glyph of Magic Resist in lvl 18.

Greater Quintessence of Desolation Greater Quintessence of Desolation
I prefer 3x Greater Quintessence of Desolation for the same reason why I use armorPen Marks.

Other runes worth considering

Greater Mark of Strength
If you think that some strength is better for you in early game you can also pick 9x Greater Mark of Attack Damage.
_____

Greater Glyph of Warding
Use them if you don't have my preferred MR runes.

Greater Glyph of Focus You can also use Greater Glyph of Cooldown Reduction. I don´t use them because on solotop you need the survivability instead of cooldown reduction. If you play on a duo lane you can pick the Cooldown runes.

_____
Greater Quintessence of Strength
Are also in quintessence only a second choice. Because as I said earlier armorPen is better than attack damage in the late game.

Greater Quintessence of Fortitude
It's also a nice choice. More health gives you more survivability and longer staying power on the lane.

Masteries

Masteries are the last thing you need to check before the Game starts, so watch again.

I use 21 Points in Offense, 0 points in Defense, and 9 points in the Utility tree.
I´m using this combination because you get the best damage output and a good base for farming.
In the Offense tree you should especially focus on Butcher because it makes farming quite easier. Also get all points in Havoc , Vampirism and Summoner´s Wrath.
In the Utility tree you need to skill Improved Recall because it can safe your live and Runic Affinity . You should also get that extra Movementspeed from Swiftness .
Because you just have 9 Points for this tree you just put 2 points in Good Hands and dont forget to improve flash with a point in Summoner´s Insight

]But whats about the 9/21/0 or 0/21/9 mastery trees? I don´t really like them because you don´t get that extra AD which is very useful in the early game to farm better and to harass stronger.
And the Survivability you get from the runes is in my opinion enough.

Items

While you look at the loading screen try to find out who your lane opponent might be.

If you could get a strong AD Champion like Jarvan IV or Nasus, who can also harass you quite strong, start with

.

If you get an AP opponent like Singed or you get a weaker enemy on your lane start with

.

After your first recall get , or if you don't have enough gold buy and a sight ward.IMPORTANT: you have to buy a ward to prevent you from ganks, just get the instead of if you don't have enough money to get a ward.

If your opponent already placed a ward at the bush near the river also buy magic.

Now earn enough money to get and .

With your next recall buy and .

Now it's time to get your Core Build. Just finish .

Your

Core Build

consists of these items:

and and

By now the laning phase is over and now it's time to become stronger to be able to initiate teamfights.

Get and when you got the money.

Later you are going to buy .

To convert your current HP in some AD get to later expand to .

Now there is just the 6th missing. To figuring out what the right 6th, which is a situational item, is

look in the chapter "Situational Items". After getting your 6th and last item you finished your build.

Now you can buy and/or .

But care now you are shining and your Warrior Trickster istn´t shining so they can see if this is the real one your not.

You need to decide on your own if you buy it or not, but the elixiers are totally worth it.

Why are these items the best choice?

Wriggle's lantern
Grants lifesteal, armor, attackdamage and a ward. Just an awesome solotop allround item. And it makes it easier to farm. The ward is also a must have to avoid ganks by the enemy jungler.

Mercury's Treads
Grants MR and tenacity. It's my favorite choice because of tenacity. But you could also use Ionian Boots of Lucidity.

Situational Items

Usually the 6th item, is an item to counter the enemies build. But sometimes you need a situational Item earlier maybe if there is a feeded AD/AP carry. Now I´m going to show you my choices to counter there builds or to get some defense.

Strong AD Power in the opposing team:

Get Thornmail if the opposing team got many AD champions or they just have 1 or 2 feeded champions to direct their damage against them.

Get Sunfire Aegis as your 6th itme if the other team has got many AD champions but they aren´t dealing dangerous damage. You will even get some extra AD if you already bought Atma's Impaler.

Strong AP Power in the opposing team:

Buy Force of Nature when he enemy casters deal huge damage to you. The extra Movement speed gives you more chances to chase the opponent successfully and you get a nice Health regeneration because of it´s passive.

Get Banshee's Veil when you got strong enemy casters and you think that some HP more wont be bad. And the extra AD is also useful.

For some magic resistance and more attack speed you should get Wit's End.
But I don´t really think that you need more attack speed with the items you already got.

Opponents with a lot of armor:

Youmuu's Ghostblade is a nice option to get some armor penetration, crit chance, cooldown reduction and if activate it you´ll also get attackspeed. Buy this if you think that you need more armor penetration to counter their build.

When you think you need some more attack speed and the enemys armor is just too high get Black Cleaver.

This is a nice item which you should buy if you are playing against a tank team which has too many armor. you can also buy Last Whisper as 6th item to deal more dmg with your skills.

Opponents with many CC:

Yes, Banshee's Veil is also a good item against teams with many CC because its passive blocks an enemy skill every 45 seconds. So get this if you need more magic resistance, health, mana and something against there CC.

Quicksilver Sash is also good because after activating all the nagtive effects which are on you end. It's useful if you use it when you got stunned while using your ulti or when you chase someone to be no longer slowed. It also gives you some MR ( => magic resistance).

You want even more survivability, get this:

If you think that you are dieng too often or you want to die less often, get Guardian Angel. You also get some armor and magic resistance.

You don't need a situational item and want more AD

Bloodthirster gives you the most damage by all and a nice amount of lifesteal. Get this for more burst damage. But you could also sell Wriggle's Lantern if your opposing team has 3 or more AP champions because you don't need that much armor.

Infinity Edge gives you a nice AD boost and your critical damage is also increased. And with your 58% critical chance you will even crit often. But don't sell Wriggle's Lantern for this item because you won't have lifesteal anymore but what you need urgent.

Youmuu's Ghostblade doesn't gives you the same amount of AD as Bloodthirster or inifity edge but you get extra attack speed, and cooldown reduction which grants you more damgage with Crushing Blow because you can use it more often. But also doesn't replace it for Wriggle's Lantern because you won't have lifesteal too.

Which Summoner Spells you should use

Summoner Spells which you can use with Wukong:

Exhaust can slow a fleeing enemy or just decrease their armor and magic resist and it even lowers their damage. In teamfights you should use it to take their carry out of combat.

Flash is a nice escape skill. Flashout of teamfights or over a wall to escape. But you can use it offensive too. Maybe when you flash forward to get closer to your enemy.

Ghost is also a nice escape or offensive skill. Use it to chase someone or in combination with Warrior Trickster you can run even further. If you pick Ghost replace it for Flash.

Teleport is nice when you play solotop. If you decide to chosse this, replace it for Exhaust.

After Heal has been improved, it is really worth. It can be used to survive a towerdive or to shock enemies who thought that they would kill you successfully before you used Heal.

Ignite is good to get that damage you need to get the kill. If you pick this replace it for Exhaust.

Summoner spells you shouldn't use with Wukong:

Clairvoyance: your not a supporter so don't pick this
Revive: the cooldown of 9 minutes is too high and the other spells are more useful
Smite: you are solotop and not in the jungle. You just need this to jungle
Surge: it's not worth it for Wukong
Cleanse: i don't think that you need this with wukong, it's better for Jax
Clarity: your not a caster and you won't get manaproblems
Promote: i don't like this spell, in my opinion it's one of the most unnecessary spells

No matter what spells you have selected, you should always have the advantages and disadvantages of the spells balanced.

How to farm right

It is most important that you only do the last hit in the farming minions. But when you hitted to early and the minion is still alive then use immediately Crushing Blow because it resets the attack speed and you'll get the minion kill.
You should never push the lane too much because it makes the opposing jungler easier to gank you. If you are on the pink side (the upper base) you can do the double golems while your opponent is pushing your lane back.
But watch out, that the minions are not too close to your tower because the tower will get to many minionkills. And minionkills are cash money.Try to hold the minions at the height of the bushes which are on the opposite of the river output.

Gameplay

Early game

Try to stay alive while farming because you are quite squishy early game.
Play defensive before you get too much harassed by your opponent. And if you're too weak, it is easier to kill you if you are ganked by the enemy's jungler. To you even more protect you against such attacks always buy and place sight wards. To make it easier for your jungler to gank your opponent, buy a Vision Ward and destroy the enemy wards.
Try to keep the minions as far away from tower that they are straight out of the tower range. You do this by only doing the last hit to the minions.

Mid Game/Late Game

After you have your core items, it is easier to kill someone and then escape. But care, you still don't have enough HP to take all the damage on you. When there is no pending team fight, try to kill some monsters in the jungle or kill the dragon together with your team to earn some money.
After you have the Warmog's Armor you are strong enough to survive the opening of team fights. Now you can exactly do what I wrote in the Chapter "Your role in teamfights". But don't forget to farm some minions or monsters while you're not a team in a fight to finish your build.

Your role in teamfights

Initianting a Fight

Wukong's role in teamfights is the role as initiator.
Jump to a target with Nimbus Strike at best a weak one and hit him with Crushing Blow. Your team should now also attack. If they started attacking use Cyclone and try to hit all opponents. Then focus on the carries. If they do not engage you got a problem, use Warrior Trickster and run away or use it and flash out.
Below here you see the sequence in which you should use your skills in a team fight:

---> --->

But try to knock opponents like Warwick or Malzahar up while they are casting their ultis to interrupt them. Also try to keep the enemies away from your carry.

Where you should set up wards

If you need some help because you don't know where you should set up wards here is an image which shows you the best places where you should set up wards as a solo top player.

Just choose one of the two green circles, dont ward at both places.

Summary

If you obey these things, buy the items I mentioned and have found a suitable situational item you'll be able to contact your opponent's ***. While writing this guide I played Wukong often to test different builds and item puchase orders. I think that this build and this item purchase order is the best one for Wukong. Just play defensive in the early game and farm then you'll be a monster in late and mid game.
I hope you liked to read my guide. And as I said above if there are any questions or suggestions you are welcome to comment on the guide.
