Why Play Lucian?

Lucian is one of the best dueling early game and can snowball a game into his advantage. He has high mobility and burst damage with Relentless Pursuit and Piercing Light.

When he has a lead, Lucian is hard to stop making him one of the best picks to play in the bot lane right now.

Runes

Press The Attack works well with his passive Lightslinger, which makes him proc this rune super fast allowing for a lot of expose damage

Triumph works well with every because it helps keep them alive after getting a kill. This rune also allows for a lot of outplay potential, or just gaining that sliver of HP needed to survive Ignite or minion damage.

This rune permanently adds attack speed as the early game goes by. This rune is especially good for because it allows for them to be able to pump out more damage, raising overall DPS potential.

This rune is amazing for because as a duelist like Lucian you are able to do that last bit of damage to finally execute the person you are fighting. Having this rune can save you in clutch moments where the 1v1 is rather close.

Celerity is good on because they are able to gain that movespeed needed to escape a lethal threat like Zed or chase down kills. This rune also gives more adaptive damage based on how your movespeed is being amped. This is good for a Black Cleaver user like Lucian.

Gathering Storm is good on almost all because they all do decent damage as the game goes on, which this rune will amp. This also gives more damage to Lucian because he tends to fall off more towards late game, so the AD this rune provides is really good.

Abilities

When Lucian uses any ability, his next auto attack will have a double-shot.

Lucian shoots a bolt of piercing light through a target.

Shoots a bolt of piercing light through an enemy unit, damaging enemies in a line for 85/120/155/190/225 (+NaN% Attack Damage) (60/75/90/105/120% of bonus Attack Damage) physical damage.Piercing Light's cast time decreases slightly as Lucian gains levels.

Lucian shoots a missile that explodes in a star shape, marking enemies. Lucian gains Movement Speed for attacking marked enemies.

Fires a shot that explodes upon enemy contact or reaching the end of its path. The explosion deals 85/125/165/205/245 (+90% Ability Power) magic damage and marks enemies for 6 seconds. When Lucian or his allies damage a marked target, Lucian gains 60/65/70/75/80 Movement Speed for 1 second.
Lucian quickly dashes a short distance. Lightslinger attacks reduce Relentless Pursuit's cooldown.

Quickly dashes a short distance.Whenever Lightslinger hits an enemy, Relentless Pursuit's cooldown is reduced by 1 second (doubles to 2 seconds against champions).
Lucian unleashes a torrent of shots from his weapons.

Lucian moves freely while firing rapidly in a single direction for 3 seconds. His shots collide with the first enemy they hit and each do 20/35/50 (+10% Ability Power) (+25% Attack Damage) physical damage. The Culling does 200% damage to minions.Lucian may use Relentless Pursuit during The Culling. Reactivate The Culling to cancel early.

Item Explanation

This item is probably the best duelist item in League. It provides 3 vital stats with decent numbers, providing AD Lifesteal and Attack speed. This item is a power spike when you purchase it on Lucian the active, which slows, and the maximum hp shred work well with his kit.

This item works amazingly with Lucian's passive Lightslinger. You need to stack damage upon someone to break their armor. Lucian's passive counts as 2 autos, which makes stacking this item extremely easy. This also works well because of the unique passive coming from Phage, called Rage. After attacking an enemy you gain movespeed for a little bit of time, which also works well with Ardent Blaze due to it having a similar effect.

This item is good on Lucian because he usually lacks range. This item can provide for a longer range auto attack. This works well with Lucian because it provides with movespeed, range, damage, and crit. These work perfectly with Lucian to amplify his base auto attack damage along with Lightslinger. If you are dealing with high damage opponents who can get onto you easily within your Rapid Firecannon then investing in Phantom Dancer instead, which will be a better choice for dueling. You usually buy that item against champions like Irelia.

This item after the update, works perfectly with crit items like Rapid Firecannon which was mentioned before. This item makes it so that your crit damage will do percent True damage. It also adds double the crit, from your crit item. This item now helps you duel/kill tanks like Malphite

We will now be moving on into situational items. I feel the best situational item for would actually be Guardian Angel. The unique passive allows for you to be revived after dying. This is good for assassins who gave to burn everything to kill you because you can be revived and they would have done everything for nothing, turning the tables. Of course keeping yourself alive is important. This item has a cooldown so you would usually sell and switch this item out for something like a Mercurial Scimitar while you wait.

After the update this item has had a lot of controversy. Should we use it? Should we not? I feel like this item is DEFINITELY viable, though you need to be really ahead to pull this off. I prefer going crit no matter the situation though that is preference. This item is supposed to work well with Lucian because he is a castor. Essence Reaver has Essence Flare which means, after using your ultimate, which in our case is The Culling auto attacks will lower the cooldown on your non ultimate abilities, this is great with Lucian, but when paired with his passive Lightslinger Lucian can refresh abilities super fast in fights.

This item is good because it gives you more Attack Speed which equals more damage. Of course though if the enemy team is really high in Attack Damage or CC you can switch the boots for the other options like Ninja Tabi or Mercury's Treads.

How To Play Lucian?

As mentioned earlier, Lucian is an early game dominant . You want to generally work with aggressive kill lanes, because Lucian is deadly enough in a 1v1 but when CC'ed it is almost a free kill, or free Flash, or Heal. Supports I generally enjoy playing with are Thresh, Leona, Braum, or Pyke. Of course there are many other supports that do well with Lucian, but these are personal favorites, and you should do well when matched together.

Level 1, you usually want to start with Piercing Light. This ability is your main damage source, along with it being a decent wave clear tool, and poking tool. You need to be pushing for a first level 2. This is where your supports usually come in. Having supports like Thresh, you should be able to get a CC combo with just level 2. Level 2 you quickly level up Relentless Pursuit. Level 3 is usually meh time, you won't be pulling off too many extended fights so this is where I would actually put another skill point into Piercing Light, to have more burst in my kit.

^When you hit the level 6 stage, you are at a stalemate almost. Lucian does not have any game changing ultimate. This is where champions like Vayne, or Kai'Sa. Their ultimates provide for a large powerspike in their kit. Lucian is about sharpening mechanics and timing, you need to know how the other champions work.

^For example, when you are Lucian vs. Kai'Sa watch for her E, and R. ALWAYS wait out her Killer Instinct, before you ultimate, because she can easily dodge it. That goes the same with her E, which actually gives her a damage boost, but also gives her a movespeed buff. Her movespeed while casting E, is enough to dodge your Piercing Light. The same goes along with Vayne, with her Invisibility and Tumble.

Later into the game, your focus is to shred anybody in front of you based on target priority. You want to kill the highest value target and win your team the teamfight. When you are peeled, you need to be keeping up with the enemy ADC's damage. I will further explain this in the next chapter.

Lucian Mechanics

As a duelist, you lack in teamfight potential. You will fall behind when it comes to team wipe, UNLESS you have sharp Lucian mechanics. Of course even with good mechanics, it is hard to outdamage a champion like Twitch.

^ Lucian's main source of damage as the game goes on is his Lightslinger. You will be wanting to get this passive off as many times in a fight, but how do you do that?

^ You will want to work on SHORT DASHING. Quick note, you want to be using quick cast, when preforming this trick. You want the closer as close to your body, so you will have almost no animation within your dash, the trade off is not going a far distance. This will automatically give you a Lightslinger shot.

^ After using that dash, you want to proceed with a Piercing Light RIGHT AFTER the second shot in your passive goes off, almost as if it were an animation cancel. The damage will still go off, and you shave off time with your damage potential.

^^^^^ The same applies after when you will be using Ardent Blaze.

Final thing is, if you are out of abilities, or not in a safe range, use your Culling to get damage off in a safe range, or to execute someone who is far away. If your abilities are up, and you are positioned well, there is no situation where your ultimate will do more damage, so you are better off actually using your regular abilities.

Teamfighting

Teamfighting on Lucian should be simple actually. You apply what you learned with the Lucian Mechanics section and apply it here. I will also expand on target priority.

Target Priority: Twitch > Nami > Orianna > Xin Zhao > Malphite

These are simple examples of the deadliest targets/ones you want to kill first, to last. In a fight, you want to usually prioritize the enemy ADC, because they are their main source of damage. Twitch is an amazing example because he has team wipe potential, and if stayed untouched, will ace your team.

^ Of course there are situations where you cannot get to the most important target, because champions like Camille, or Irelia won't let you. Instead you would stick to the ADC Golden Rule.

DAMAGE WHOEVER IS IN YOUR DAMAGE RANGE/WHOEVER IS CLOSEST TO YOU

Similar to Xayah, you need to watch out for dangerous abilities that could end the fight for your team. You want to use Relentless Pursuit to dodge fatal abilities like Death Sentence. When you use your dash carelessly you are open to game changing ultimates like Chain Of Corruption, or Enchanted Crystal Arrow. Of course the same goes for you of course. You can always punish others who use their abilities carelessly by dashing INTO THEM.

Since Lucian is a low range you play almost as a semi frontline. You aren't the squishiest ever, with the potential to contest champions like Ahri. You don't always have to let your own team engage. You can have small skirmishes and win them, since Lucian actually excels in things like that. This is good for you since it is hard for you to 100-0 everybody on the enemy team. Having a hypercarry like Twitch is bad for you, especially when it comes to fighting late game, with everybody full HP. That is where you start small skirmishes and maybe even bait out key abilities like Twitch's Spray And Pray. Lucian has no key abilities other than Relentless Pursuit, which can actually be taken off CD easily, with the passive mixtures of Lightslinger, and Relentless Pursuit.
