Champion Build Guide

[13.8] Warwick Top // High Elo Builds, Matchup Tips and Useful Links

By Neoliberalism
Intro
Hi! Welcome to my guide, this is currently a work in progress.

Warwick has a variety of build paths and learning how to build according to how far ahead or behind you are, what the enemy team comp is like, and what role you need to play for your team can be very tricky. I hope this guide can be of some use.

This is my first guide apologies if its about rough around the edges. I am by no means a good player but ive done a fair bit of research (especially from H0rnlime's stream) and i think this info is solid. I would appreciate any feedback and an up vote if you found it helpful.

Obviously the high elo builds are not what these players are going every game (most high elo games dont last long enough for a full build anyway) but these seem to be their most commonly run items. Please dont copy them blindly without thinking about the team comp your building into and I wouldnt recommend the off meta builds in ranked. Make sure to check out the links at the end!
TLDR
General Stuff
Barrier is just a cheese. Its pretty bad after 6 and is awful lategame. Its takes a while to get used to but you dont need barrier to win the early 1v1 your strong enough already. Toplane macro just isnt the same without teleport. When it comes to taking Ghost over flash you have to remember that you basically have a flash already built into your kit, using your ult to escape ganks or fights isnt something to scoff at and Ghost scales really well, especially in a teamfight.
Do NOT max Q. You max W and then E. Each point in W gives you 5% movement speed and 10% more attack speed towards targets below 50% health. When you put points in Q you only really get more healing and doesnt actually deal that much more damage. Putting points in Q also increases the mana cost by 10 and leads to mana issues in lane. Max E second as it reduces the cooldown by a second and gives you another 5% damage reduction.
Lethal Tempo Build Path

You will be running Lethal Tempo into most matchups. Because you are maxing Q last you can take Triumph instead of Presence of Mind. You can switch up Conditioning for Second Wind/Bone Plating if you are vs a lane bully. If the enemy comp has a lot of CC you can take Legend: Tenacity.
Doran's Blade into most matchups. Doran's Shield if your vs. a ranged matchup. If your confident take Cull into Sion, K'Sante, Rammus, Shen or Malphite.
Rush Tiamat if you can afford it on your first/second back and its not too disresctful (like into matchups like Irelia where you need to hit your powerspike asap). Otherwise build after your first item, any later than this and your better off skipping it entirely.
Rush Blade of the Ruined King. Build second if you want to roam early. Dont build vs tanks unless they build Heartsteel, they will be unkillable anyway. If you get really behind its usually best to skip Botrk.
Build Stridebreaker everytime. Either 1st or 2nd.
Buy Boots of Swiftness unless you really need Plated Steelcaps or Mercury's Treads. Being able to dodge skill shots and chase down targets is key to succeeding with Warwick.
Take Wit's End if your ahead or if your vs an AP laner. Can build either 2nd/3rd/4th. Once you have Stridebreaker and at least one other damage item ( Blade of the Ruined King or Wit's End) you can start to build tank. Alternatively, if your team can manage ok without you, build Hullbreaker and split. You ideally want to buy Hullbreaker 2nd after Stridebreaker or Botrk, and commit to splitting early. Wit's End goes great with Hullbreaker so dont feel like you have to skip it.
Build Dead Man's Plate. You need the speed if your carrying. If your really behind consider Frozen Heart or Randuin's Omen but this is matchup specific and Dead Man's Plate is never really a bad choice.
Force of Nature is your best source of MR. The passive makes your super tanky and again it gives you speed. You can build Wit's End instead here if you skipped but you will probably still need to build later.
Sell your tiamat and consider Wit's End if your skipped it and your team still needs damage. If you skipped Botrk or Wits End and you need more tankyness then go Frozen Heart, Randuin's Omen, Abyssal Mask or Guardian Angel depending on the situation.

Grasp of the Undying Tank Build Path

Take Grasp of the Undying if you are vs Riven, Gragas, Kennen, Jayce, Cho'Gath, Malphite, Pantheon, Quinn, Gnar, Teemo, Urgot, Rengar or Shen. You can also go vs Akshan and Rumble but Lethal Tempo also works into them.
Doran's Blade into melee. Doran's Shield into a ranged matchup.
Rush Tiamat. You waveclear sucks and you need it. Maybe build it second if you cant afford it but try to get it early.
Build Iceborn Gauntlet next. Its gives you loads of utility and can help you chase and peel. Its the perfect mythic if your going tank.
Boots of Swiftness are still good even if your going tank. Pick up Plated Steelcaps or Mercury's Treads as needed however.
Force of Nature is your best source of MR. Build it everytime.
Frozen Heart if you need more armor is normally the best shout - it gets a bit situational at this point. Consider Dead Man's Plate if they dont have a lot of attack speed or Randuin's Omen if they have lots of crit.
Finish Titanic Hydra once you have enough armour and MR. It gives you a nice boost of damage. You can build after Force of Nature and then build armour 4th if your team are doing well but youll normally want more tankyness.
A bit situational but Abyssal Mask can be a good MR choice if your being carried by AP or VS lots of AP. Randuin's Omen if they have multiple sources of crit or a fed ADC. Try not to build Randuin's Omen AND Frozen heart - the passives do not stack and its inefficient.
Gargoyle Stoneplate can be a good last item pick into a balanced comp. It scaled with your bonuses so best suited to be built last.
Runes
Great Options
Lethal Tempo: Synergizes with Blade of the Ruined King and Stridebreaker, does well in lane vs less mobile enemies, tanks and bruisers as you have time to stack it up (most top laners). Works with more or less any build path. If unsure take of what to take or are new to Warwick go this. Doesnt scale all too in the late game but because of warwicks W passive you can stack this up super fast on a low health target in a teamfight and move on to wreck havok.
Grasp of the Undying: Good option to go vs matchups like Gragas, Riven, Jayce and Gnar where trades their trade patterns are shorter and you aren't able to stack up LT. Helps you scale into more of a bruiser lategame. Opens up another slot in the resolve tree to Warwick so you can run demolish which can help you snowball. Usually take with Iceborn Gauntlet and build full tank .
Meh Options
Conqueror: Personally will pick lethal tempo over conq every time but alot of players still run this rune, especially the Koreans who like to run it with Jak'Sho, The Protean. I think the passive from Jak'Sho and Conq proc at simular times so it can throw your enemies off guard on top of your already crazy sustain. Take in simular situations as Lethal Tempo, and into tankier less mobile comps. You wont be as deadly during the laning phase if you were to of taken Lethal Tempo but it scales better late game and buffs the damage on your Q/R a lot.
Press the Attack: Its probably the strongest rune in lane but it falls off even harder in the late game than LT. Because of Warwicks W passive getting enemies to below half health as quickly as possible is key to winning an all in. This is where PTA helps as it gives you some intial burst. Unfortunately doesnt work so well if you are vs a tank where the inital burst doesnt get the enemy below half health. I dont see a lot of players run this except for Warwicks De Crocs.
Fleet Footwork: Havent tried this myself but have seen people take this into range matchups like Vlad, Jayce and Kennen where sustain and being able to stick to your opponent is key.
Botrk and Mythic Options
Great Options
Blade of the Ruined King: Your first item is usually going to be Botrk, especially if your running lethal tempo. In most of the top lane matchups your able to take longer trades and stack up lethal tempo, which is where Bortk shines. It also synergizes incredibly well with your W passive and despite leaving you a bit squishy late game, it gives you a ton of damage. The thing to note about Bortk is it deals bonus damage equal to a targets CURRENT health, so vs targets that stack HP this is great but vs a comp of low HP squishies you can condsider skipping it.
Stridebreaker: Gives you a bit of everything you need and the attack speed helps you stack up lethal tempo. The passive bonus lets you roam around the map faster and make the most out of blood hunt. Check out H0rnlime's im fast af boi build, where he runs teleport and ghost. You can grab an early tiamat so you can push and roam more frequently. If theres no roam oppertunities the extra waveclear will enable you to steal enemy camps like krugs more effectively. Im not a fan of items with actives in low elo as its hard to get the full value out of them but the cooldown is short and it helps with your waveclear too. Whilst its not the best scaling mythic its usually your best option.
Iceborn Gauntlet: Its a great mythic into AD comps. Its not the most exciting pick, but into certain lanes or team comps your going to have to build full tank. Scales well and the slow adds some enables you to run down targets and peel for your team. The real issue with is this mythic is the lack of damage to minions, in combination with your already terrible waveclear it means you can get stuck in lane. Consider rushing bamis cinder or tiamat.
Ok Options
Divine Sunderer: Scales well, works well vs bruisers and tanks because of the percentage damage and adds some burst to your AA>Q>AA combo helping get targets below half health for your passive to kick in. The sheen can also help you take down towers a bit better. If your in a lane where its just about shorter trades and poking with Q consider taking grasp and rushing divine instead of Botrk. Its an alright option but Iceborn Gauntlet is kind of better - in lower elos however the carry potential of divine is kind of appealing.
Jak'Sho, The Protean: The mighty protein shake, makes you real swoll and tanky. Got nerfed to hell so doesnt work on Warwick as well as it once did. However it scales pretty good and gives you both resistances so your well equipped for the midgame and most balanced enemy camps. The passive helps keep you tanky during a team fight and gives you time to stack up LT/conq. This seems to be a favourite of the Koreans and is usually built after Bortk with Conq.
Meh Options
Trinity Force: Not the best mythic but its easier to use than to stridebreaker and simularly gives you a bit of everything. The passive helps with turrets as well and the attack speed feels real nice and helps you proc PTA faster or stack up LT/Conq. Dont really see anyone running this other than Warwick de Crocs.
Evenshroud: Only take this when you are turbo behind. Its super cheap and the passive helps your team carry you. You dirty inter.
Armor Options
Good Carry Build Options
Dead Man's Plate: Movement speed is generally an underappreciated stat in league. Being able to roam around the map, dodge skill shots, and get to teamfights/objectives ontime can is key and deadmans enables you to do this even better. Synergizes great with stridebreaker and your W passive. Can be bought almost every game.
Zhonya's Hourglass: You can take this if your really far ahead. Warwick usually ends up doing more magic damage than physical damage over the course of a game and has some decent AP ratios. Adding some AP into his build can really help increase his burst especially if your comp is primarily AD and the enemy comp can stack armor. The item active is great for teamfights and gives you time to get another E off in a fight. Good 3rd/4th item.
Good Tank Build / Situational Options
Sunfire Aegis: Great 2nd/3rd item choice if youve decided to go full tank. The passive helps with your awful waveclear and does a suprising ammount of damage once stacked up in a teamfight. Dont build this however if you rush Tiamat and want to go titanic hydra.
Randuin's Omen: A bit of a comp specific item and wouldnt recommend going every game. As ive mentioned im not a fan of items with actives in low elo but into comps with an usual ammount of crit this item is super strong, think Kindred jungle, Akshan, Tryndamere mid/top etc
Frozen Heart: Real solid option for when your building full tank. Your normally poorer when you build tanky so the price is real nice. Its a great option into comps where enemies are relient on auto attacks for their damage. Helps with some of your mana issues as well.
Thornmail: There are better armor options. If your playing Warwick you know grievous wounds is busted right now, but he sucks at applying it and Thornmail isnt really your answer. Its an ok option to build if theres multiple healers on their team but leave it to someone with AOE damage or heals/shields to apply antiheal for you.
Meh Options
Death's Dance: Got changed recently and has some CDR which works well for your E. The problem is the healing and stored damage can be real buggy with your kit. The damage is dealt as true damage so you cant negate it with your E and the damage over time stops you from chasing down your opponents with your w active. If your super ahead, your team already has some frontline, and you just want some AD and armour this is an ok 3rd/4th item.
Magic Resist Options
Good Carry Build Options
Force of Nature: Much like Dead Mans's Plate movement speed is very effective stat on warwick. Force of nature's passive makes you super tanky, scales super well and is a good option if your ahead or behind. Works well with most mythics is your best source of MR. Can be bought almost every game for both carry and tank builds. Can build 3rd/4th/5th.
Wit's End: Great carry orientated item, can be bought 3rd if your ahead even if your not in dire need of MR, the attack speed works great with you passive/lethal tempo/conq and the movement speed helps you stick onto tagets. The AD might seem a bit low but the on hit damage adds up and helps into champs stacking armor. Synergizes with stridebreaker. Maybe not something to build every game but if your ahead go for it.
Good Tank / Situational Options
Abyssal Mask: Not something to be building every game but this item has its place. Great for when you have lots of AP sources in your comp like an AP jungler or a Zyra/Brand support AND when the enemy comp has the same. Usually only build when your behind and or need carrying in the lategame.
Meh Options
Spirit Visage: Force of Nature is just better. The irony with this items passive is that if you want more healing your better off building more damage. Its an ok source of MR, but to get full value out of the passive you have to have an enchanter like Karma or Soraka AND a lux mid on your team. Unfortunately grievous wounds is very strong right now and renders the passive kind of useless. But if by some miracle you have multiple enchanters and the enemy team on hasnt bought healcut this can be an ok pickup. Also worth considering if you have an ocean soul.
Maw of Malmortius: Very greedy carry orientated item your going to fall off late game if your build this. Its good vs AP burst, think fizz, katarina etc. You can try build if your ahead or if your team already has a decent frontline not recommended though.
Silvermere Dawn: I know its good vs mord but you dont really have a hard time against him and I would not recommend building it just for an easy lane. Can be pretty handy in the late game vs control mages or cc supports. Again, im not a fan of item actives and this item is very situational but its worth keeping in mind.
Situational / Utility Items
Good Tank Options
Titanic Hydra: A good 5th? item option if your building Iceborn Gauntlet but not so much if your going a carry orientated build. If you take stridebreaker your usually better off selling your tiamat late game. Tiamat is enough to help with your waveclear, but to scale better you need more defensive options like Dead Mans plate or Force of Nature. If you went Iceborn this can be a decent way of introducing some damage into your build. Dont build this if you bought Sunfire.
Gargoyle Stoneplate: Actually a decent last item buy if your building tank. The passive scales off of you HP and resistances so it works pretty well as a last item pick. The active is pretty easy to use and in late game you should be able to make the most out of the passive in teamfights. Gives you both resistances for most most mixed comps. Not something to get before Dead Mans or Force of Nature but not a bad pick.
Good Situational Options
Hullbreaker: Despite his awful waveclear, Warwick is a great splitpusher and hullbreaker enables him to be an even better one. Build usually 2nd or latest 3rd.
Anathema's Chains: Bit situational but if the enemy team has one player carrying them all you can buy to help shut them down. I guess its an OK buy if your just building tank. Not something I would recommend but these situations do happen.
Guardian Angel: Not something to be going everygame but if your really worried about giving over your shutdown gold or an important fight is soon it can be considered. Definately not better than Dead Mans Plate if your looking for armour but its a good pick if your solo carrying and your team loses if you die.
Meh Options
Spear of Shojin: Havent seen anyone really build this but it doesnt look terrible. Possibly a good option if your carrying turbo hard. The movement speed works well with your kit and the CDR helps keep your E off cooldown. The lack of armour just leaves you a little to squishy is all. Could maybe work if you took divine, skipped BotrK and wanted more damage.
Chempunk Chainsword: Not something I would recommend, Warwick is really a single target damage champion and distrubuting grievous wounds is not something he does well. Maybe if you have Tiamat, but if your the point where your buying chempunk chainsword your usually going to have sold tiamat already.
Lane Cheese
Good Options
Cull: If your in a lane where your can really stomp your laner or if they are playing super defensive and wont let you kill them you can pick this up. Think vs a Sion, Rammus, Malphite and K'Sante for example.
Tiamat: Warwicks waveclear is awful. Your going to need this if you want to splitpush or if you want to build tank. Its a bit of a disrespectful buy so be careful buying too early and it means you wont be able to force a freeze on your laner. If your not going tank you should sell this late game.
Bami's Cinder: Again your waveclear sucks. Bami's helps with this and if your building tank your normally getting Sunfire second anyways. This means if you wont delay your 2 item spike as much as if you were to buy Tiamat. I think I still prefer getting Tiamat just because Id rather have a pickaxe levels 3-5 where your so strong rather over two Ruby Crystals. Another issue with Bami's Cinder is that your inclined to go Sunfire second which means you're super squishy into AP.
Warden's Mail: If your vs someone whos rushing Lethality like Renekton you can rush this early and make their 1st item basically useless. Also a decent cheese vs Riven Akshan and Urgot. The problem if you want a Tiamat and Warden's Mail your delaying your item spikes by like 2200 gold? I think its best to grab it after 1 or 2 items - just experiment for yourself.
Meh Options
Executioner's Calling: Your usually better off not buying this but if your vs an Illaoi or Olaf for example, and your scared they could 1 v 2 when your jungler comes it could be worth trying? The issue is into Illaoi, Fiora, Olaf, after level 6 you usually lose even with executioners so your better off saving your gold.
Quicksilver Sash: Warwick doesnt really have a hard time vs Mordekaiser so this isnt really necessary. But if you got camped really hard or something it could be worth considering.
Hexdrinker: Going Maw is super greedy but whatever reason your doing it anyways you could grab this vs a Teemo or something where you dont want the attack speed from Wits End? Idk building this early seems kinda troll.
Refillable Potion: Warwicks sustain means you dont really ever need this but if your vs a Teemo or something and are getting poked out, have been forced to back early with little gold you can pick it up.
Boots
Boots of Swiftness: A great choice these are really overlooked. Theyre cheap and they work well with your W passive. Dodging skillshots (especially cc) is a fundamental part of winning matchups in lane and these help you do so. Allows you roam and get back to lane faster.
Great vs: Aatrox, Singed, Nasus and Sion.
Plated Steelcaps: Got buffed S13 so they help reduce a a lot more damage from skills (e.g. Darius W, Nasus Q) than they used to. Bot lane meta is big right now so you'll probably want to pick these up if your botlane decides to feed. Take these into AD range matchups or champs that AA alot.
Great vs: Akshan, Darius, Quinn, Yone, Yasuo, Tryndamere and Vayne
Mercury's Treads: Dont feel like I need to explain this one, take into heavy CC comps or lanes where you need MR.
Great vs: Kennen, Teemo, Gragas, Cassiopeia and Ryze
Sorcerer's Shoes: Pretty troll but hear me out, Kayle only has 22 base MR whilst most top laners have 32. Means your basically doing true damage with your passive and abilities. Pick up zhonyas third, Max Q and you could do be doing some serious chomping.
Great vs: Kayle
Ionian Boots of Lucidity: Personally not such a fan but they are cheap and the summoner spell haste is pretty nice if your running flash or TP - personally dont feel warwick is too dependant on these though because of blood hunt and that he can use his ult to escape. I will usually opt for swifties if the team comp doesnt call for plated steelcaps or merc treads but you could go these instead. I suppose these work better if you run Conqueror?

Tips - WIP
Dont buy control wards! Your strong af early and need all the gold you can get to reach your item spikes.
Bait out weak early junglers! Obviously focus on your laner but dont be afraid to push and play for the 1 v 2. Drawing pressure to top will help out your bot lane a ton and getting an early double kill can help you snowball super hard. This is a lot easier if you have barrier but you are mighty strong levels 3-5 and you have serious outplay potential with your E and passives.
Get an early ward on the enemy junglers red or blue. Before the minions reach the wave put down a stealth ward either over the wall for blue or into the pit for red. Ideally around the 1 minute mark. Warding the red is a bit riskier with warwick but if your laner and jungler arent strong early you can risk it. Being able to track your jungler is an important skill especially early where its not too difficult to pull off. Alternatively you can check your laners/botlanes mana bars as they come into lane to see if they leashed.
Skuttle Crab Priority. Simular to baiting out weak junglers. If your jungler starts botside and needs to full clear they are likely going to be going for Skuttle Crab at 3:30. Making sure your lane is pushed at this time means that you will have prio so you can roam to river and help out if it is contested. Be warned this can leave you vulnerable to a gank but pre 6 junglers arent normally strong enough to deal with you.
Zoning the enemy off of the first three melee minions. Level 1 you are crazy strong vs most matchups. If you can force your laner to miss the first three minions worth of exp you'll be in for a great lane.
Honeyfruits spawn in the river between 6:00 - 6:30! If your wave is pushed and you have nothing better to do go grab em.
Tired of counterpicks? If your ok with learning another champion, consider Pantheon. It seems too good to be true but he does well almost a lot of Warwicks bad matchups. Vayne, Illaoi, Jax, Gnar, Gragas, Akshan, Darius and Teemo all get beat out by him. Doesnt really fit into this guide but its something I noticed and thought to mention.

I cannot take credit for this section this stuff was extracted from The Warwick Top Spreadsheet made by Peacewick with the help of ParnellyX, Walou, Xyllow & eBrixton. If you guys want me to take it down please shoot me a message. Some of the data feels a little dated but ive found this to be a real help in my games and the matchup tips are solid. I wasnt a big fan of the original format and I hate having to use google docs so I wanted to post it on here.
