Introduction

Hello everyone and welcome to my Renekton guide. This is my first guide ever, so it may not be amazing, but I'm trying my best :D Feel free to leave positive or negative comments as long as they're constructive and not just troll hate. Anyways, I have been playing Renekton for a while now, and he is my main top lane choice and is tons of fun! If you just want a brief idea of how to build him, check the cheat sheet at the top of the guide, otherwise read on, as I will try and make this guide as detailed as possible.

Greater Mark of Desolation-I find these to be the best choice in the current top lane meta, as almost all top laners (including Renekton) run Greater Seal of Armor, and these marks perfectly counter them as they give you 15 Arpen against the 13 Armor the seals give. These along with your early The Brutalizerwill hurt your lane opponent more throughout the game rather than early levels if you run Greater Mark of Attack Damage
Greater Seal of Armor-As discussed in the marks section, these runes are almost mandatory in the current meta as 90% of top laners are AD, and this will help cut down their damage a bit, as well as when the enemy jungler ganks you if you are overextending.
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist-Since you usually wont be taking heavy magic damage until mid game/levels, these runes are a good choice since by this level they are stronger than flat MR.
Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage-Quints can really be AD or more Arpen, but I like the bit of AD to aid in last hitting and make your abilities hurt a bit more.

Alternative choices

(Still Viable, can be chosen if you dont like my setup)-
Greater Mark of Attack Damage-If you are really looking to hurt early then you can run these, or if you know your facing a low armor opponent.
Greater Mark of Armor-If you don't like taking damage and are satisfied with just a The Brutalizer for Arpen, then these are definitely viable.

The Seals and Glyphs I run on almost every champ in the game (except mid laners), but if you found an alternative setup that works for you then go for it.

Greater Quintessence of Desolation-If you are looking for loads of armor pen then you can run these, but dont go AD marks with Arpen Quints since you lose 5 points of Arpen as you would only lose 3 AD by using my setup, and 5 Arpen>3 AD
Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed-These are excellent runes if you can pay the price for them. These along with your Boots 3Pots start gives you lots of base MS.
Greater Quintessence of Health-If you'd rather have a few more hitpoints and sacrifice some damage, then these are fine.

Summoner Spells

Most Viable Summoner Spells

Great spell for securing kills and shutting down healers/regenerators



The Get-Out-of-Jail-Free-Card of LoL. Can be used with Slice and Dice
for an effective TRIPLE blink, or to flash in for the final
Cull the Meek, autoattack, etc. to secure a kill.

Semi-Viable Summoner Spells

This spell is not a bad option as it's disable is nice and can be used against to hinder an AD carry's DPS momentarily, or against casters if they use deadly channeled spells (i.e. Slicing Maelstrom, Crowstorm, Death Lotus etc.)



If you are still learning the game or want to do the ultimate bait with your ult and heal, then this spell is fine. But many top lanes take Ignite so choose at your own risk.



This can substitute for Flash if you can't stand Flash or like to run fast. This spell is good if you like to farm past their first turret once its down, and as long as you have wards to see someone coming you can pop Ghost and zoom back to safety.



This spell is actually very viable with its recent buffs, giving you the ability to eat oranges to be K, and then a CC shield reducing disables by 65%! Cleanse should be considered if you are taking Renekton to ranked. In normals there are probably better choices though, but if it floats your boat then go for it.(NOTE: THIS SPELL DOESN'T REMOVE THE HEALING REDUCTION FROM Ignite, THOUGH IT DOES REMOVE THE BURNING TRUE DAMAGE.)



If you are planning on playing with a premade or ranked team, then this spell really goes with Ignite and Flash in the Most Viable section, as it allows for top lane to be anywhere (as long as there is decent ward coverage) which is HUGE when it comes to team objectives, skirmishes, etc. Also consider this spell if you plan on buying gp10's so you can get max gold over time and not miss crucial early game farm.

Any other spells are for trolling. End of story.

Skill Sequence and Explanation/Description of Fury


Ability Sequence

In short, we want to max Q first, then W, and finally E, picking up ult when we can.
However, if the enemy jungler is a strong lvl 2 or 3 ganker (i.e. Udyr, Lee Sin), consider picking up Slice and Dice at lvl 2. Maxing Q will give you loads of sustian and farming capability, and it does hurt ALOT. Next we want W, as its damage is much more useful than Slice and Dice, since Slice and Dice is mainly for utility.

Before I get into skill descriptions, I want to talk about Renekton'sfury bar. One very common misconception I see is that people think fury is his passive. It's not. Fury is just a mechanic that replaces mana. Renekton will generate fury every time he autoattacks or hits targets with his abilities. However, once Renekton generates 50+ fury, his abilities consume 50 fury and have a bonus effect. A final thing about fury, is that Dominus makes Renekton generate 5 fury per second.


Reign of Anger
Passive
This passive goes along with Renekton's fury bar (Because his passive is NOT fury ;D). If you are under 1/2 HP, then you will generate 50% more fury than normal. This makes Renekton an excellent bruiser as it encourages you to continue to fight even if you are low on HP. Although it's not quite as strong as Olaf's Berserker Rage, it helps.


Cull the Meek
Q Ability
This is Renekton's bread and butter skill. At max level with your The Brutalizer you can use it every few seconds and will clear minion waves no problem. This skill is an excellent farm and sustain skill, as well as nice AOE damage. If you have 50+ fury, this skill HURTS, and will heal you for a very good amount.


Ruthless Predator
W Ability
Renekton's CC ability that proc's on-hit effects. This helps Renekton 1v1 with ease, and punish an out of position opponent. Remember: this ability resets Renekton's swing timer, so you can get an effective triple hit, if you autoattack and then immediately use Ruthless Predator you will do lots of damage before the target can retaliate. With 50+ fury, this ability does increased damage, hits 3 times (allowing for 4 CONSECUTIVE HITS IF U AUTOATTACK AND THEN USE IT), and increases the stun duration from .75 seconds to 1.5 seconds. You'll want to use Ruthless Predator to consume your fury if your jungler is ganking for you, or someone is chasing you and they are next to you.


Slice and Dice
E Ability
This is Renekton's gap closer, escape tool, chase tool, etc. It has the same range and cast speed of Graves' Quickdraw as well as going though the same walls as it, but does damage, too. The best thing about this skill is that if you hit a target with Slice, you can then use Dice within the next 4 seconds. This spell is perfect for escaping ganks. When the enemy jungler shows up, just run into the top brush, and wait for him to come check it. As he is entering the bush, Slice through him, and Dice to safety. With this skill and flash, you will rarely die to a gank in lane. (Unless you're facing your brother, Nasus, since Wither is extremely strong.) Note: Caitlyn's Ace in the Hole picture is used for dice since MOBAfire doesnt have the code for the dice ability, and the two icons look the same. The 50+ fury effect on Slice and Dice ONLY APPLIES TO Dice. If you use Dice with 50+ fury, it will deal increased damage and shred the armor of all targets hit by 35% at max level! This is HUGE. Late game, hitting the tanks/offtanks with this really helps your team.


Dominus
R Ability
Ahh, Renekton's ult. This baby makes you a badass croc that wrecks everything. Specifically, you will gain a Sunfire Aegis Aura, increased range on other abilities, 5 fury generation per second, and heal for 600 at max level. This is one of my reasons for building a Sunfire Aegis, as you will be doing 140 damage per second to nearby enemies. This is massive damage. Let's look at an average teamfight. The "group fighting" stage lasts about 6 to 8 seconds. 140 x 7 = 980 (we'll average it out). That's about 1000 damage just by standing near people. Pretty dang strong. Another thing to consider is that that's in magic damage, so if opponents build armor trying to counter you, they're only reducing one aspect of Renekton's damage. There are certain times when you'll want to pop your ult to make it most effective.
  • You get ganked and need to get some HP
  • You have a DOT/Delayed spell on you, and need to be sure you live.
  • You are fully committed to a 1v1
  • You enter a teamfight
  • You are getting tower dove (His ult is very good at heal baiting)
  • You need more range on your abilities to chase/escape
  • Lulu uses Wild Growth on you and you want to make opponents sh*t their pants.

Core and Alternative Items Explanation

Item Sequence

With Renekton, you want a good mix of damage and survivability. This build is just a generic build that you can use in most games, but you should always build to fit the game you're in. I'll go into some detail for different items at different phases and what items synergize well with Renekton.


Starting Items


Boots of Speed and 3 Health Potions
This is what you'll want to go in most situations, as it gives you good mobility and sustain. Helpful for escaping jungler ganks and pacing in the lane to avoid harass.

Doran's Blade
If you have Movespeed Quints or are looking for a power start then Doran's Blade is the way to go. Gives you a decent amount of HP, AD, and some minimal lifesteal. Also a good choice if their jungler has weak ganks Pre-lvl 6 (i.e. Warwick, Malphite).

Cloth Armor and 5 Health Potions
This setup gives the most sustain and defense, but lacks mobility and damage. If you are still not completely confident in your Renekton ability, or are facing a tough opponent (i.e. Garen, Darius), this is a good setup that allows you to take some early punishment without going back to base to heal. The armor along with your runes and masteries will give you +36 armor at level one. Let's see Judgment now Garen.

Early Game Items



Doran's Blade
If you didn't start with a Doran's Blade, you can pick one or two (no more than three!) if your lane isn't going well. However if you are doing well, I highly recommend picking up Phage and The Brutalizer, as they scale better.

Brutalizer
This is an amazing early game Bruiser item, and it fits right in to Renekton's kit. Should be either your first or second item along with Phage. Get it first if your opponent started Cloth Armor and 5 Health Potion.

Phage
Again a great early game Bruiser item, and works wonders with Ruthless Predator, as it would stun and slow them if Phage procs. You'll usually want to pick up the Ruby Crystal first. This item also builds into Frozen Mallet, so you won't have to sell it later.

Hexdrinker
This is almost mandatory if you face one of the AP top laners (i.e. Vladimir, Rumble).
Builds into Maw of Malmortius, so you will want to pick it up around lvl 10-13 when you'll start facing AP opponents more, if your top lane was AD.

Chain Vest
An ingredient of Sunfire Aegis, and always a good choice versus most top laners. You'll usually want to pick up either this or Giant's Belt in the early game. 45 armor will show its value.

Giant's Belt
Like I said in the above section it's a good idea to pick up either this or the Chain Vest component of Sunfire Aegis (or even Frozen Mallet), and this is the way to go if you find yourself dying to burst damage alot.

Negatron Cloak
This is a good item if magic damage is just too much. However, only build this if you planning on getting one of its final items. (i.e. Force of Nature, Banshee's Veil)

Boots


Mercury's Treads
After further consideration I have decided to make these my go to boots. They are just so invaluable to a tank/offtank. The CC reduction is just too hard to ignore.

Ionian Boots of Lucidity
These boots are just amazing on Renekton, allowing him to use his skills much more often. Since Renekton doesn't use mana, spam is encouraged with these boots. :D



Ninja Tabi
These are also excellent boots if you're facing a heavy autoattacker opponent, someone with heavy physical harass, or someone lacking CC. (i.e. Tryndamere, Gangplank, AD Nidalee)

Core Items



Frozen Mallet
Amazing item for Renekton, giving your Ruthless Predator a for-sure slow with the stun, and giving survivability and damage, perfect for Renekton.

The Bloodthirster
This is my item replacing Atma's Impaler ever since its nerf. Giving you massive AD and lifesteal, this item helps you stay in lane forever and be a serious damage threat. With Renekton's farming ease, you'll have it fully stacked in no time.

Sunfire Cape
As mentioned in the Dominus section, this item has amazing synergy with Renekton, as well as giving nice armor and HP. You'll want this item when important team fights are occurring, for the good teamfight presence.

Maw of Malmortius
An excellent anti-caster item, giving you a hefty magic shield when you drop to a certain lvl of hp. Builds from Hexdrinker, and Reign of Anger works well with the increasing AD at lower HP, making Renekton exceptionally strong at low HP.

Guardian Angel
To top off your build giving nice resistances and a second life if you die. Something to consider is if people see the Guardian Angel on you, they are less likely to focus you, allowing you to freely wreak havoc on the enemy team.

Alternative Item Choices


Damage


Youmuu's Ghostblade
This is a viable item if you're trying to be an anti-carry, since it gives you a quick steroid in order to take down the enemy carry(s), as well as upgraded The Brutalizer Stats.

Last Whisper
If there are lots of enemies with decent armor items, or that Rammus with over 9000 armor, Last Whisper is a good choice.

The Black Cleaver
If the armor crisis is not quite as a situation where Last Whisper is needed, then this is definitely the way to go. It has amazing synergy with Ruthless Predator, as it will apply 2 or 3 stacks at once, as well as giving nice damage and attack speed.

Trinity Force
A good alternative to Frozen Mallet if you feel you have enough survivability, and want some more damage and movespeed. Just be aware that it is VERY expensive and you should really focus on farming if you plan on getting it. The most satisfying part of Trinity Force is the Sheen procs on Ruthless Predator. WARNING: SEVERE DEATH will occur if Renekton with Trinity Force hits you with Ruthless Predator.

Infinity Edge
If you are EXTREMELY fed and want to do more damage than your whole team combined, then pick this up and watch opponents drop like flies.

Madred's Bloodrazor
If there is a Dr. Mundo or Volibear with 5k HP, and they're destroying your team, consider picking this up. Again, Ruthless Predator applies it, and you will drop tanks as long as they don't have lots of magic resist.

Survivability


Wit's End
This gives you damage and survivabilty really, and works perfectly with Ruthless Predator. It should be considered if they have good Magic DPS, and would replace Maw of Malmortius.

Warmog's Armor
If you're looking for HP and more HP, this is what you want. Giving you 1350 HP when fully stacked, you'll be able to take alot more punishment. Consider this instead of mallet if you are the only tanky champ on your team.

Force of Nature
If there are at least 2 major AP threats, then this a good item, as it gives the most MR in the game, as well as nice HP regen and movespeed.

Randuin's Omen
This is the best anti-AD in the current meta (along with Frozen Heart) as it helps your whole team by disabling in an AOE rather than just helping the user. If you think you'll need this pick up the Heart of Gold.

Thornmail
This along with Ninja Tabi will really shut down autoattackers, and make them kill themselves by attacking you. However in the current meta, Randuin's Omen is a better choice for anti-AD as I described above.

Quicksilver Sash
The best anti-CC item in the League, as well as hefty amounts of magic resist. Consider this if they have really hard disables like Infinite Duress or Nether Grasp.

Banshee's Veil
Gives a handy spell shield and some nice MR and HP. Usually not my first choice though, as the other MR items are better for Renekton.

Gameplay/Role on Team

Early Game



Renekton should only be played as a solo-top bruiser, so make sure your team knows that's your intentions before the game. After you assess who will be your lane opponent and who the enemy jungler is so you can choose the best starting items for the situation. Early game you should focus mainly on farming, and NOT harassing. Eventually Cull the Meek will easily clear waves, but in the early levels use Slice and Dice through the melee minions, then Cull the Meek, then Slice and Dice back. However, if you are able to zone your opponent away from the EXP, then go for it, as it will help you win your lane and possibly snowball. Just make sure to buy wards if you plan on constantly overextending so you can watch for ganks. An excellent lane harass skill combo is to Slice and Dice in, Ruthless Predator, Cull the Meek, then Slice and Dice out. This allow you to get in nice damage while taking little to no return damage. If you are losing in lane, don't worry. Remember, Doran's Blades are your friend. Don't be afraid to buy a couple to help keep in line with your lane opponent. If you are getting zoned and being forced to turret hug and farm at your turret, ask your jungler to gank. Just don't demand it or call him bad for not ganking, as that will most likely make him not gank for you. The best way to ensure a successful gank is to bait your opponent into a trade, since they know they can win trades. If you can do this and hopefully make your opponent blow an escape/dash/blink spell trying to get you. This will almost ensure a kill for either you or you jungler. However, be very careful about trying to help in a gank if you are under 30% hp, as your lane opponent will probably turn and kill you, then walk out of the gank scot-free. If you get ganked by the enemy jungler, just use the Slice and Dice bush technique and you will escape 80% of ganks.

Mid Game



By now you will hopefully have a couple of kills and/or assists under your belt, and maybe a death or two. If not, it's ok, Mid Game is when Renekton Dominus. (See what I did there :P) By now you need to be ready to help your team secure dragon, or take the first mid tower. You will hopefully be beating your lane opponent in CS, and have Phage, The Brutalizer, and Mercury's Treads. If you catch a carry out of position, make sure to punish them, since Cull the Meek will do 1/4 and maybe even 1/3 their hp. You and the main tank or other offtank should be in front when your team is traveling as a group. If one of your carry's is fed, it may be better to protect them rather than diving on the enemy carrys. Remember to farm top every time it gets pushed to the tower, as long as it doesn't cost your team a lost teamfight or dragon. One more thing to remember is that if there is a situation where either you or your carry has to die, sacrifice yourself if you can. Your carry is more important than you. (Especially if they're fed.) You might even be able to get Baron if your team has a good lead.

Late Game



Now you should have 2-3 core items, and even more kills and assists. Make sure you stay with your team for the most part, and you have all agreed on a carry/squishy to target. Always try and have wards at Baron and Dragon, and at least one oracles. (Hopefully your support picks it up.) A good rule of thumb is to ward the enemy jungle if you're winning and your own jungle if you're losing. This helps get kills on people to either maintain your lead or try and take the lead. At this point, a single Ace could mean Victory or Defeat, depending on who gets it. If a teammate likes to go out of position to farm or take jungle, really try and encourage them to stick with the team. At this point your main role will be either to soak up damage if you're the only tanky champ, dive the enemy carrys, or protect your own. Remember to activate Dominus when a teamfight starts, and continue to Cull the Meek so you can get maximum AOE damage.
