Choose Champion Build:

  • LoL Champion: Master Yi
    Warrior's Path
  • LoL Champion: Master Yi
    Devouring the enemies

Introduction

Hi everyone,

I enjoy playing with Master Yi due to the speed and thrill which, according to me, no other champ in the game provides. Every game is different and therefore the builds can't be consistent. But you can still have a basic foundation which can help you to build on during the game.

This guide is based on my own experience. If something is totally wrong ^^ please leave a comment so I can change it accordingly.

Note: there are two builds in this guide one for building Stalker's Blade - Warrior and the other for Stalker's Blade - Devourer. I am still modifying the chapters to spread light on both the Yi builds present in this guide.

I will also keep tweaking the masteries and items as I play more games and try out different paths for master yi. I'll keep changing the masteries here and there when I find something more useful to Yi than before, so keep following ^^.

Spells

Smite
A must for all junglers.
Teleport
Teleport is much more useful for a jungler than Flash. This is because Yi has escaping abilities if Alpha Strike is used correctly. Meditate can also be used After the CC spell is cast to heal and then kill or escape. Teleport is very useful in early game ganking and late game lane pushing. The flash does help in escaping difficult situations but its 300 second cooldown is a definite no no for me! Which is, in my opinion, out-weighed by the effectiveness of teleporting to the right place at the right time.

Runes

Greater Quintessence of Attack Speed x 3 , Greater Mark of Attack Speed x 9, Greater Seal of Attack Speed x 2
I decided to use the attack speed runes instead of attack damage because of the jungler items. According to me the Stalker's Blade - Warrior provides enough stats for early game. As for comparing it with Stalker's Blade - Devourer, the stats are good but most junglers get lost in the goal to get enchanted devourer, trying to balance between ganks and farming for stacks on the devourer and the occasional counter jungles. However, if you do plan on building the sated devourer.. Take a look at the second build ("Devouring the enemies down") page.

Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist x 2, Greater Seal of Armor x 7
The magic resist glyphs and the armor provide useful stats during early game to balance of any AP magic penetrations and damage from the enemy and jungle creeps.
Greater Glyph of Scaling Ability Power x 2, Greater Glyph of Scaling Cooldown Reduction x 3
The AP runes go well with the masteries I have used, this has nothing to do with AP Yi (R.I.P). The Deathfire Touch keystone scales with AP runes. The cooldown reduction can be replaced with another AP rune to help do more damage or another MR rune (which wont provide so much of a difference in resisting magic since most AP enemies buy Magic penetration or reduction.)

Masteries

Don't sideline just yet the new patch 6.4 seems to have shifted Warlord's Bloodlust into a new gear. The new changes will be added if it suits yi well

Natural Talent vs Vampirism
2% lifesteal isn't a lot, but +10 AD and +15 AP is pretty useful during the early stages of the game where your damage is minimal.

Deathfire Touch vs Warlord's Bloodlust
When building a critic focused master yi then the Warlord's Bloodlust is very handy for early game without lifesteal. Otherwise select the Deathfire Touch to scale well with your AD bonus damage and the couple of low AP stats you have from the Greater Glyph of Scaling Ability Power should provide enough bonus magic damage to make a noticeable difference. The Warlord's Bloodlust gives a maximum of 25% heal and attack speed for 4 seconds. The Ravenous Hydra provides enough life steal stats for master yi which really makes the 25% heal unnecessary.

Items

My item headings are pretty descriptive. And I also have added some build notes, please make sure your take a peek at it.

Most Yi's start by building Blade of the Ruined King which sounds very reasonable and I do build it from time to time depending on the situation. So if you not treading down the critical pathway (i.e no Warlord's Bloodlust then try the core build #2, getting the 40% attack speed from Blade of the Ruined King and also lifesteal and some pretty mean passive stats.

The build with Stalker's Blade - Warrior builds with Ravenous Hydra where as the second build with Stalker's Blade - Devourer builds with Bloodthirster. This is because the second build is based on speed and the additional 8% lifesteal is essential while the first build is based on damage, but swapping out the hydra for the more blood hungry weapon isn't going to be harmful in any way.

But if you are going to follow the critical pathway try core build #1 with Phantom Dancer and it's little brother - the Statikk Shiv

Vs. AP + Tanks or super fed AD enemies
Sell the Stalker's Blade - Warrior and get something with better stats depending on the situation.
Against AP carries you could try replace the Stalker's Blade - Warrior with the Mercurial Scimitar or Maw of Malmortius.
Against AD carries, replace the warrior's blade with frozen mallet or black cleaver (something with more health and additional stats)

Personally i don't really like the Blade of the Ruined King.. so I normally build core build #1 with the Deathfire Touch keystone. And its a much quicker build since its cheaper. Also effective considering wuju style's true damage and critical double damage.

Skill Sequence

Starting with the Alpha Strike at level 1 which is general for all Yis. Then at level 2 unlock Wuju Style. With Health Potion you can hold off meditate for a while during the early jungling phase. Wuju style helps make more damage and clear camps quickly.

After getting meditate focus on enhancing Alpha Strike to the max but don't forget to unlock the Highlander occasionally.

Creeping / Jungling

This section is a very important part of jungling with Master Yi. It all depends on where you start. Most of the people start with gromp then deal with the blue sentinel to get the Blue buff.

I start with the red brambleback and Smite it when it has about 50% Hp left to get back some of the health lost. You don't need any assists from the laners. After you get the Red buff and unlock your Wuju Style at level 2, you can go to the crimson raptor. If your health is low don't forget to use the Health Potion, x 2 if necessary.

Now onto the Greater Murk Wolf camp where you have to remember to finish off the wolf with smite to get the nature spirit. At this point you can either recall or use meditate then move onto the blue sentinel camp.

The more quicker you clear the camps the more faster you can reach level 4 then start ganking a few lanes. Otherwise upgrade your weapons then go back to jungling. Don't counter jungle at this stage it is very risky with master yi.

Ward the enemy's jungle entrances and or your jungle entrances to keep track of the enemy jungler.

If you are building your devourer, and following my suggested build items i.e devourer and phantom dancer. Once you have the phantom dancer, if before 20 minutes, you can solo the rift herald easily with a couple of these Health Potion. Helps you stack quicker and remember to get drake to stack on your devourer so wait until you have the item to get drake, but keep warding it just to make sure the enemy team doesn't make away with the drake first..

dragon
Is a very important factor in the game. But don't give free kills to the enemy team trying to steal a drake if your team is falling behind. Because you can get the next one or the one after that.

baron
Remember to ward the baron before 20 minutes.

Team Work and fights

As a jungler, your best friend is your quick access pings. You need to keep an eye out for missing enemies from their respective lanes and warn the other lanes. You also need to keep an eye out for possible ganks from the enemy team jungler. All this needs to be communicated to your team as quick as possible so don't forget to use the pings to warn your teammates or to ask for assistance when going for the dragon.

In team fights, wait in the bushes or close by, unseen, until your team engages for a battle. At this point the ADC and other squishies are normally safe at the back, without any delay ambush from the back and slay those squishies back to respawn.

Remember that baron is a team effort. But also remember that with Yi its not impossible to get the baron alone.

Important
When facing a champion with any kind of cc, save your Meditate until after the cc ability has been cast on you. This can give you time to heal and to take advantage of the situation.

Summary

I have tried to include everything I could remember that is different from the normal jungling with Master Yi. Hope this guide helps to improve your Yi game plays or at least provide you with an alternative to try out.

Its my first guide and I tried to make it as pretty >_< as possible (lies). The most important sections are the Creeping / Jungling section and the Items, Builds, Masteries. The rest is sort of background noise no one really pays attention to most of the time, BUT I tried to keep the explanations short (and possibly sweet) as possible.

If I have included something which doesn't make sense for master yi, I request you to comment with the problems otherwise LIKE LIKE LIKE :D
