About this Guide

I have just updated the guide as of patch 7.7. Originally, I created the guide to document what was then an odd off-meta build. Every once in a while I notice some statistical anomalies/unusual builds on Lolalytics.com, a League data aggregation site. I made the mistake of not recording the highest win rate builds for Support Shaco before it disappeared, so that's why I made this guide, to make sure I had the information in case Malzahar support became much less popular and disappeared from the site.

Support Malzahar has actually become much more popular over time.

When I originally wrote the guide in patch 7.2, Support Malzahar had a 52.72% win rate as a support in Platinum+ games and the best Malzahar supports had a 57.24% win rate. In patch 7.7, Malz support has a 49.62% win rate, but the best Malz players still maintain a similar win rate as before.

Please note that win rate is not the same as being good, at least in the case of items and builds. Try to understand why the highest win rate items are the highest win rate items. Sometimes it's because they are better, but sometimes it's just a statistical anomaly or something else, like the item is more expensive so only winning players can build it.

You can find all the statistics for this build at http://current.lolalytics.com/champion/Malzahar/Support/. I am just recording them here and interpreting them the best that I can.

Items

Starting Items
Get Health pots with the biscuit mastery or refillable potion without. If you won't be harassed, you can skip pots and get faerie charm for extra mana. If you can figure out what high Elo players do with it, starting with a control ward and a potion is apparently strong.

Early in the game, buy control wards, sightstone, Frostfang, and boots in whatever order you see fit.

Eye of the Watchers
Perfect first item. Has everything you want. Frost Queen's Claim just delays Rylai's/Liandry's, so buying the cheaper item is much better.

Boots
Almost all the boots are pretty similar. Sorcerer's shoes give you a bit of extra damage, but if you don't quite have the gold, the CDR boots are also great. Malzahar benefits from both stats. Mobility boots are the current highest win rate option and give you great potential for roaming with your ult.

Second item:
There are three good choices here. Rylai's (the most common), Redemption, and Liandry's. If you aren't sure, go Rylai's. The slow is excellent. If you won't need the slow, Liandry's is great damage. If you feel that the AoE heal in teamfights is going to be crucial, Redemption will let you help out your allies. Despite the nerfs, Redemption is still an effective item, although very few people will build it early. If you don't know how to use it or forget to, then you should prefer Rylai's or Liandry's. You can go Morellonomicon vs healers, too, but only for the passive.

Third item.
Most of the time, you are looking to complete the other half of the Rylai's Liandry's combo. You would really only want a different item if you really needed it, like Morellonomicon for healing or Zhonya's or Locket if you or your ADC are being focused by assassins or heavy burst damage.

Fourth Item.
You're in late game, so this will be pretty situational. If you don't have both parts of the Rylai's-Liandry's combo yet, finish it. Void Staff is probably the best option normally, but don't buy it if the enemy team isn't buying any MR. Buy Abyssal Scepter it if both teams have multiple magic damage threats. Morello if you're running out of mana/need more ults/somebody is healing too much. Deathcap if you can afford it. Zhonya's if you need it. You can still buy Redemption any time.

Fifth Item:
The game shouldn't have lasted this long, but if it does, you're probably going to win because now you're a full blown carry. Guardian Angel and Banshee's Veil are worth considering here. You want to survive to deal your damage and ult the right target. All the item descriptions from the fourth item also apply here. And buy Sorcerer's Elixir or Elixir of Iron, depending on whether you are being focused in fights or not.

Spells

Summoner Spells:
Exhaust is usually the best option, since it gives you a good all in with the slow and your voidlings, and it is also the most common. However, ignite is basically the same win rate, so take it vs healers of course, and any other time you feel more comfortable taking it.

Regular spells:
Originally, maxing E, then W was preferred, but either due to the W changes or just players improving at the champion and understanding it better, Q max is now the highest win rate build by a decent margin.

Q>E>W also has a moderately high win rate.

Masteries

Thunderlord's and Deathfire Touch are the most common options, and both will do just fine. But a small percentage of players are going Stormraider's Surge and doing quite well. I imagine this really helps your ability to chase someone down and get them with your ult.

Runes

Attack damage and Armor runes are both better than I expected. Malzahar's W scales with attack damage, so if you auto attack a lot and use the W often, you can get your use out of AD.

You are perfectly fine running a standard AP page of any kind, but you can also go for a tankier support page or one that is more AD heavy as well. In addition, Movement Speed quints are strong to help you get in position to land your ult on fleeing targets.
