Introduction

Hello!

Welcome to my first guide! It's about Garen, a really nice... well i would say tanky ad. You can build him only tanky or only ad, but my way is the tanky ad way but i try to show you the other ways either.

You don't have to build it exactly like I did, this guide is just to give you some suggestions how you could build him.

Before i played Garen like this I often bought a Doran's Shield and then tanky items, it worked well, but this way i deal much more damage and im also tanky.

I read the top of the best voted guide's but i couldn't find the exactly build i use, so i decided to write this guide.

I hope this will help you and Thank you for reading my Guide ;),
and please try it before voting it down, because i do every time good with this build, so just give it a try ^^

Skill Sequence

Passive - Perseverance

This is his passive and its Great ! You just have to wait a few secs, then you are almost full health, that means after the first impact with the enemy called first blood you don't have to port back (if you're not that lower than 1/4 health). In late game you got more health so it regens faster.

Use your Passive! Don't port yourself back if its not really necessary!

Q Spell - Decisive Striks

This spell is pretty nice, you can use it to silence someone and deal a bit of damage or you just can use it for being faster.

Use the ability to run faster (escape and hunt people) and try to silence dangerous enemy's in a team fight that have to cast spells.

W Spell - Courage

That is you're on board shield. It's passive gives you magical resistance and Armor and this stack up for every killed enemy unit and that permanently (till 25 magic resist and armor). When you active it, it will give you a shield that take a few percent of damage.

Use it When you have to Tank damage, when a caster uses a attack spell at you and such things.

E Spell - Judgment

This spell deals damage and is pretty useful. When you active it, you spin around for 3 seconds and it removes all existing slows and the duration of new slows by 50 percent. But the damage to minion's is reduced by 50 %.

Use it to farm faster, do damage to enemy's, stop slows and reduce slows by 50 %

R Spell - Demacian Justice

This is you're great ultimate. At end level it deals 525 magical damage and deals even more if the enemy is low, so if you're fighting someone that stuck up live you can nuke him down at the end, the great is enemy's often don't expect this, like trynda.

Use your Ult to secure a kill, but don't use it headless! Use it when the enemy has low health, and don't try to kill the tank because he has much life = more damage. The tank is there to Tank damage, use your ult on dmg dealer. And use it at Tryn when he is low (if he is the best target) when he don't know how dangerous you are and you can time it right, he cant make use of his ultimate.

Summoner Spells

Let's talk about the summoner spells!

Champion one got Flash and Exhaust

I used to use Exhaust and Ghost but i changed my mind after trying Flash instead of Ghost.
Ghost is nice, because you're fast but Flash is better for me, because it's nice to Flash to an enemy with low life and nuke him down with your ultimate Demacian Justice.

But you can use whatever you want, if you think it would work better for you.
Here is a list of my opinions:

Good spells:
Exhaust - It slows your enemy and he deals less damage.
Ghost - It makes you faster and let you go through units.
Ignite - It could get you some kills when enemy's are low, and reduce targets healing and regeneration.
Flash - Can help you to escape and to catch someone.

Maby spells:
Heal - It heals you, could be useful in Team fights, or help you don't get killed by dot's (damage over time- like ignite)
Teleport - Helps you to get faster from one position to another ( its better for 5v5).
Cleanse - Remove all CC (Crowd Control), fear's, blind's and more.
Surge - It gives you attack speed and AP, you could use it to get fast dragon or a tower

Not so good spells:
Revive - We don't want to die that often, but it has a pretty high cd (cool down) and other spells would be more useful.
Smite - It's good for jungeling, but this guide won't show you how to jungle with Garen.
Clarity - Garen don't use mana, so its useless and you're not a supporter ;)
Clairvoyance - Well it is pretty useful, but a supporter should take it. ( its better for 5v5)

Not sure about Promote in 3v3 and 5v5 yet, i gonna test it.
Promote - makes a vassal stronger, heal him once and you get the gold for his kills.

Dominon ONLY:
- This spell is for Dominion only, this guide is for 3v3 and 5v5.
Garrison - I don't play dominion so i cant refer this spell.

Runes

Runes

Precision
Fleet Footwork
Phase Rush

Well the Runes are pretty standard i guess.

That is my Explanation for the runes i take.

I take 3x Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed for being faster. It's never bad to have the ability to run faster.

I take 9x Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist because it gives you more resistance versus Ap champions.

I take 9x Greater Seal of Armor it gives you more resistance versus Ad champions.

I take 9x Greater Mark of Desolation for better damage output.

Why flat seals / glyphs and why not ?

I got on my normal account Greater Seal of Armor and Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist, but just because i bought it like this.
It depends on you what you like better, stronger in early game is flat but stronger in late game is per level.
I would say in 3v3 is Flat better and in 5v5 is per level better.

Items

The items depend on you, but i will give you some tips and suggestions how i use them.

This is the build that would come up if the game would be perfect, but this is not the case, well not often ;)

And as you might saw, there's one item that can be removed in late game, the Doran's Blade, you can put in any item that you want/need. Maby a Thornmail, Force of Nature or another Phantom Dancer?

I start with a Doran's Blade, this will give us some damage, life steal and health.

Afterwards i go strait for Warmog's Armor, but if you cant stay in lane till you got enough money you can buy Boots before buying a full Warmog's Armor.

Tipp: you could start with Giant's Belt than Boots than Warmog's Armor and then Boots of Swiftness

-

ps. this was the important part, now you on your own, use the situational items or you just follow my build either.

-

At this point of the game you have to decide what you need more, if you're dealing enough damage you and don't get to much you can build your Zeal, if you're doing enough damage but you're getting to much, you can buy some defense. A Negatron Cloak or Chain Vest could help. You can build these up later to better items. After your defense, if needed, you can build your Zeal.

After the Zeal you can buy a B. F. Sword, we gonna upgrade this into a Bloodthirster.
After Bloodthirster we gonna build up our Zeal into a Phantom Dancer, if you bought some defense you can build them up now to better items.

Tipp: If you bought a Chain Vest and you think you got enough Armor, then you could upgrade it into an Atma's Impaler, that gives you some Dmg, and you got your Armor.

If you're still getting to much damage you can buy now another defense item. If all is fine you could start building your Infinity Edge.

Tipp:If you want to get more tanky, you could buy a Frozen Mallet and it slows the enemys. If you have bought Atma's Impaler then you get even more AD because of the life.

Now you are almost at the end of the line, if you bought defensive items and got no space for Infinity Edge it's okay, but if the game is going on and you still doing ok, you can sell your Doran's Blade and buy Damage or defense. This depend on what you need more, but games don't go often that long.

If you are thinking that some items aren't that great you can look up the Situational Items and see if there is a item that would fit better to your play style. And don't be afraid to try out something different.

Situational Items

¤ Shoes

Boots of Swiftness - This are the shoes i almost buy every game, it makes you fast!

Mercury's Treads - If there is "much" and "heavy" AP damage then you better should buy these, they also got 35 tenacity, great versus cc.

Ninja Tabi - If there is "much" and "heavy" AD damage you could buy these, they give you some armor and 12 % dodge.

¤ Damage

Atma's Impaler - This Item gives you some armor, critical strike chance and some AD ( 2 % of maximum life (that means at 3500 hp its 70 ad damage)).

Phantom Dancer - This Item will give you critical damage, some movement speed and attack speed.

Youmuu's Ghostblade - This item gives you some ad, critical chance cool down reduction armor and when you activate it, then it gives you movement speed, attack speed for 4 secs but can get stacked up to 8 if you get hit by melee attacks.

Zeke's Harbinger - AS, life steal, health regen and reduces the armor of nearby enemy champions. Good if you're team got much ad champs.

Wit's End - If you feel you need attack speed and magical defense get this item. your attacks also deal bonus magic damage.

Black Cleaver - 30 AS, 55 AD and reduce your targets armor, if you don't got much champs with high armor and you feel you need something to go through their armor, buy this.

Last Whisper - If enemy team is stacking armor like hell, this will help you. 40 ad and 40 % armor penetration.(If they not i would buy Black Cleaver instead.)

Infinity Edge - 80 ad, 25 crit chance and your crits deal now 250% instead of 200% more damage.

Executioner's Calling - This could be a early game item, gives you critical strike chance, life steal and a dot on the enemy. When you activate it it will cause a wound that will reduve the healing and regeneration for 50 %. ( good versus life stealer's)

Cloak and Dagger - Well you could buy it early game, gives you AS, crit chance and 35 tenacity ( when there's much CC its good to buy this )

¤ Defensive

Sunfire Aegis - Armor, health and deals some magic damage to nearby enemies.

Quicksilver Sash - Magic resist and when activated it removes all debuffs from you.

Hexdrinker - 35 ad and some magic damage. Its passive give you a shield that active itself if magical damage hit you down less than 30 % of maximum health.

Guardian Angel - Armor, magic resist and upon death it bring you back to life with 750 hp.

Force of Nature - Health regen, movement speed and 76 magic resistance, great versus ap champions.

Randuin's Omen - Armor, health, health regen, some cool down reduction and a chance to slow down enemys that hit you for 3 seconds. When activated it slows the movement speed, attack speed from surrounding units ( the longer the more armor and magical resist you got).

Spirit Visage - Health, magical resist and its passive gives you cdr and improve healing, health regen, life steal.

Banshee's Veil - Health, magic resist and a shield that blocks one negative spell every 45 secs.

Warmog's Armor - Much health and health regen that can stack up higher.

Thornmail - Great versus Ad champs, gives you armor and deal 30 % taken damage as magical damage to the attacking enemy.

Frozen Mallet - 20 ad and 700 health, it passive slows the movement speed of your target you're hitting.

Leviathan - 180 health, and its passive let it stack up to 820 health with 20 stacks, and will give you when you reached 20 stacks the ability to take 15 % less damage. ( it stacks up with kills and assists).

Farming

Farming with Garen is very easy. Just press E and spin into the minion wave but in late game this wont kill a whole minion wave, so you have to last hit and in early game you're damage is not high enough.

Team Work

What is your job in the Team?

Well you're job depends, you can Tank, deal damage and save kills. I always buy wards, because normally no one does it, but Wards can save your life!

3on3 Tips

Because I like 3on3's more than 5on5's I will show you some tips!
I made a picture and added some Legends, I will explain it to you!

-
-

Thats the 3v3 Map, called Twisted Treeline.

As you can see there are only 4 Buffs, The Dragon ( D ), Red Lizard ( R ), the Ghast's and Wolfes( B ). It can happen that there 2 Ghast's or wolfes.

Dragon's will give your Team 280 Gold and gives your team a buff that increase the damage.

The Red lizard gives the person who kill's it a bonus of true damage and slows the enemy or creeps the person hits.

There two buffs at top, a green one that incrases the Cooldown reduction and the attackspeed and a white one wich incrases only the movement speed.

It is very important, so ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS have a ward at Dragon and Red buff, even if they aren't there, and if your enemy has a ward there too, its not a bad idea to take counter wards.

Controlling the Dragon is important, the buff makes you stronger and gives much money for everyone in the team. And the ward at red gives you a sight in mid, so if youre getting ganked you will know it :)
