Camille is a hyperscaling duelist with maxhp true damage. Sounds like a hard counter, really isn't. She will typically get an MR shield in the early levels due to your E and passive poke. After early levels, her shield is too small to matter.
Cho'Gath
Silences suck. Maxhp damage sucks. Executes suck. Cho'Gath is a strong tank right now too. You aren't going to burst him. However, you do typically win if you can hit your E.
Garen
Not free, but easy. Garen has basically a worse version of your kit. His E shreds armor, yours does %MaxHP damage. His Q silences, yours stuns.
Darius
I have never won lane against Darius as Volibear top. I have never lost a game against Darius as Volibear top. Extreme threat in Laning Phase. After 25 minutes, though, he's useless.
Gangplank
If he gets into melee range, he's super squishy and pops like a balloon. Probably a lane where I'd go PTA with my normal Sunderer build.
Gwen
Female Ryze. 44% winrate E-Q spammer. She hurts a lot, and outscales you, but she's very easy to lock down if you have backup. A bit of a strange lane in that sense.
Illaoi
Every Volibear main I talk to says that this matchup is unwinnable. I disagree. Is it difficult? Yes. But when you stop meta-slaving a bramble vest rush, she becomes far more playable. Sheen->Tabis->Sunderer->Frozen Heart or Randuins. Use your E to zone her off when she hits her E, and use your Q to run away faster. Illaoi is countered by moving away from her.
Jax
Once he gets a real weapon (Divine Sunderer), he can be scary. Before then, just don't get owned too hard in short trades.
Dr. Mundo
Mundo does way too much damage and is way too tanky. Basically, every fight you take against him is the equivalent of two pool noodles slapping each other.
Fiora
Brain matchup. Absolute brain matchup. You win if you're smarter, she wins if she's smarter. However, she massively outscales.
Kayle
If you kill her pre-6, you just won lane. If you don't, enjoy getting poked. At level 16 and three items she auto-wins.
Gnar
If he goes melee range with you, he dies. However, the poke until he messes up is incredibly painful. Unflinching + Swifties imo.
Irelia
Irelia is a meme. Her passive is a copy-paste of ours, except ours takes 5 stacks, and hers requires abilities. She will outdash and outheal you. However, her best builds require her to stack tons of armor, and you can abuse this.
Lillia
PERMABAN. Unplayable. No, there's nothing you can do. Yes, I've tried, I'd rather face Teemo. She has true damage, burns, Kiting, AOE, Range, Damage, and tankiness. Mediocre Jungler, zero counterpicks in toplane.
Mordekaiser
For AP, you're kinda screwed. For tank, you don't win in his Ult, but you can actually fight him. However, if you do fight him, nobody wins. Boring lane.
Nasus
Every single time he goes for a minion, engage on him. Nasus does not get to have fun. His Wither counters AP quite a bit with the attack speed reduction, though.
Sett
Sett go thunk thunk, you go chomp chomp. Seriously though, this matchup is very similar to other stat checkers. Don't get hit by his true damage from W, try to not get stunned, and him pulling you under turret a great way to make you both waste your ults.
Olaf
Tabis->Warden's Mail->Bramble Vest. Watch him deal zero damage. Watch in real time as the Olaf player's singular brain cell undergoes mitosis. Olaf player remembers he can hit the E key and deal true damage. Die under turret. Repeat.
Ornn
Lore-accurate matchup. Also, probably the most fair matchup. You both have maxhp damage. Both are tanky, both have good teamfight ults. Play how Ornn is playing. If he's playing to scale, you can play to scale as well. If he's aggressive, play aggressive. Fun matchup.
Riven
Double tenacity and rushing Tabis makes her a joke. So glad they didn't buff this champion after durability patch.
Sion
I don't know what to say about Sion. Sunderer destroys him. AP destroys him. However, if he's full tank and not splitpushing, he's probably tankier than you are. Remember to run from his passive.
Tahm Kench
Tahm Kench is kinda OP, but also is just generally a good tank. I actually prefer running full tank against Tahm. Even though he stacks Health quite a bit, Sunderer doesn't do that much to him for whatever reason. Very big scary tank later.
Teemo
Getting Blinded is very annoying, but unless he's ungodly fed he's going to start to fall off in the midgame. Rushing Spectre's Cowl and Merc Treads can be worth it. Only lane I use Doran's Shield in.
Trundle
If he has Lethal Tempo, you lose early fights. If he has PTA, it's normally even, but he can chase better, and heal off minion wave. Tabis rush helps a lot, so does Frozen Heart.
Tryndamere
Tryndamere is a champ badly in need of a rework. Tabis + Warden's Mail and he wont deal damage to you until he gets Infinity Edge, but by that point you've upgraded your Warden's Mail and he's useless again.
Urgot
Freelo. He pulls you in? Hit your E-Q and he loses more health than you did.
Warwick
Cheese lane. Antiheal is good against him, but with Antiheal's recent nerfs it might not be worth. He wins trades. Every time. If you don't fight him, you win.
Wukong
Wukong right now, Top or Jungle, is an absolutely disgusting abomination of a champion. Invisibility, a black cleaver built in, an auto reset, clones, two dashes, two knockups, can abuse Sunderer, has great teamfight, and good dueling. A worthwhile ban if you can't ban Lillia.
Yorick
You can stack your passive off his ghouls. Focus the Maiden, it's the source of his damage. He WILL out-splitpush you, but that's fine if you can abuse that to win 5v4s and get a win condition through Dragons. Ranked as Major due to his ability to straight up 1v3 a fight if nobody kills the maiden.
Aatrox
I have no idea who wins this matchup. I've played it probably 10 times, and even after reviewing the replay I couldn't tell what wins or loses this lane. I genuinely, honestly do not know.
Bel'Veth
You're a great early teamfighter. She wants every herald. Match made in heaven.
Rell
Whichever one of you engages first, the other follows up, and it's GG for that teamfight.
Diana
Similarly to Rell, you have a great engage to set up AOE.
Seraphine
You follow up each other's ults incredibly well. Also, shielding and healing.
Shen
Very rare combo of Shen support and Volibear top, but the amount of damage is insane. Shield bash can easily hit for 500+ damage if he ults on your ult.

Legend: Tenacity: Grants Tenacity, a stat we skip by opting for Revitalize over Unflinching in our main runes.
Last Stand: Volibear has backloaded healing. Last stand allows us to survive and dish out more damage while our Frenzied Maul is on cooldown.
Against Ranged
Aftershock: Grants bonus resistances and a burst of damage after immobilizing an enemy champion. Used in ranged matchups as Grasp of the Undying is hard to proc.
Shield Bash: Grants massive damage from our Sky Splitter shield.
Second Wind: Healing and sustain. Also makes laning against ranged significantly easier, as more often than not their auto attacks will heal you.
Bone Plating: Bone Plating is incredibly overpowered in early trades. Taking 3 bonus hits while your three hits deal bonus damage is a no-brainer. As an added bonus, The Relentless Storm's chain lightning often breaks enemy bone plating.
Combos
Volibear's combos are very basic. Here's a few listed out as buttons and as icons. In general, you want to use Sky Splitter on a target, then stun them within the area of Sky Splitter using Thundering Smash, giving you the maximum damage.

Combo Notes:
-Your Thundering Smash (Q) is an auto attack reset.
-Your Frenzied Maul (W) is also an auto attack reset.
- Sky Splitter does %maxhp magic damage, and also gives you a shield if you stand within it's radius.
- Frenzied Maul (W) deals more damage and grants a heal against targets that have been marked by Frenzied Maul.
