Not Updated For Current Season
This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
You should not have a problem with Wukong, as his kit revolves around getting close, the area in which you excel. Don't use Noxian Guillotine on the clone, and you will destroy him.
Hecarim
Hecarim must do sustained engages to have a meaningful impact. The longer the fight goes, the more you chip away at his health while healing your own.
Malphite
Malphite is easy to fight and bully early on. His armor stacking will become annoying at best, however Noxian Guillotine will still do tremendous damage. Don't feel discouraged to fight him, but be careful of ganks when he goes aggressive.
Garen
You can counter Garen's silence by using your Q before he hits his, while kiting until it wears off. If Garen all-ins you, you should not run away because he cannot outdamage you unless you are the villain. Duck in and out of combat to deny his passive with yours, and force him to fight with low health or lose gold and experience.
Irelia
It is extremely easy to kite Irelia's Hiten Style, because you can turn around and slow her before walking away. If she chases you, wait until it wears off and it becomes an easy counter-engage.
Jax
Jax is extremely weak at early levels, where you can overpower him with your passive. You can counter his stun with your pull, because the CC time is around the same when he bounces off of you. Keep your pull ready if he engages, as a one-sided stun can turn the fight.
Jayce
Jayce cannot fight you head-on, however his strength lies in sustained poke, which is Darius' weakness. If he keeps his distance, try to engage with him often, lest you be forced to back with low health.
Pantheon
Pantheon will often poke you with his Spear Shot. Trade back with your Q because he can't run out of the blade unless he runs into you. If he all-ins you, he will start out with his stun, which can be cancelled by pulling him in midair, causing him to bounce off of you instead.
Renekton
Renekton will almost always dash through minions and stun you, dashing away to safety before you can retaliate. You can counter this by pulling him in before he hits the minion, negating his escape and allowing you to punish him. He will try to cancel your ultimate with his, so you can try to bluff by delaying Noxian Guillotine.
Nasus
Nasus is easy to bully early on. His armor stacking and lifesteal from his Q will become annoying at best, however Noxian Guillotine will still do great damage. Fight him often, but be wary of ganks, as his wither severely cripples you. He will try to cancel your ultimate with his, so you can try to bluff by delaying Noxian Guillotine.
Gnar
Gnar's strength lies in poking you down with his % damage before jumping on you with Mega Gnar. If his rage bar is close to full, landing your bleed on him will cause him to transform. Wait right before he returns to Mini Gnar, and engage. If he tries to jump away, you can Apprehend him back for a quick kill.
Darius
Darius mirrors are usually skill match-ups. Be careful around him and try to play more passive than usual. If he overextends, you can punish him. Either Darius can snowball quickly, completely crushing the opposing.
Riven
Both you and Riven are squishy early on, while doing very high damage. Do not fight her with her Q up, as she can quickly melt your health bar. Engage only when you see that she has wasted a key skill on minions. Even many kills against her does not completely stop her from coming back to bite you.
Rumble
Constantly harrass him when he goes to last-hit. Force him to use his harpoons to CS, and freeze the wave. If he has Danger Zone, all-in him and force him to Overheat.
Tryndamere
Tryndamere is very luck-based at early levels. You can force him back with your passive, but be cautious and gauge the power of his critical chance accordingly. You cannot fight him with his Undying Rage available, so try to bait it before using Noxian Guillotine.
Trundle
Trundle has very high sustain, and will recover very quickly unopposed. You will become very squishy when he ults you, and the healing from Subjugate will negate a large part of your ultimate.
Shen
Shen is very strong in 1v1, as he has spammable shield from his passive, %HP damage from his Q, and a Dodge Aura . He will roam with Stand United, so pay attention when he goes missing, as you can possibly cancel it with your pull.
Kindred
Kindred has everything Darius is weak against: %HP damage, low CD mobility, and a resistance to executes. Deny her stacks as much as safely possible, and she will be bearable late game.
Ryze
You will never be able to hit your Decimate on a competent Ryze. He will snare you and make you waste your skills. Try to farm as best you can, and assist your team elsewhere. You will only kill him if he wanders too close.
Illaoi
Her skills are very easy to dodge, as they take a long time to cast. If she manages to catch you with her grab, all-in her as she will not be able to fight your clone, or she will be punished hard. Disengage quickly when she uses her ultimate, because this is the only time she can overpower you, unless you are confident you can dodge her tentacle smashes.
Quinn
After Quinn gets her Vault, bait it by walking up to her. They will often be spooked and use it, rather than risk your Q damage, therefore giving you a free hook and a full skill rotation on her.
Tahm Kench
Do not be afraid to tank his Devour, as afterwards he will not have enough damage to continue the fight. After he spits you out, you can unload your skill rotation on him and allow your passive to chip away his health.
Sion
Sion has no way of fighting against you. His primary poke, Roar of the Slayer, is easily predictable, and his Decimating Smash is avoidable while he is charging. Your damage will burst through his shield very quickly. He has no true sustain, so your passive is extremely powerful in this match-up.
Rengar
Rengar will usually pull minions towards the bushes. If he tries to juke you by jumping back and forth through the bushes, you can auto attack him to proc your passive while he jumps in mid-air. You can cancel his jump with your Apprehend if he tries to escape through a minion.
Olaf
In the early levels, you can bait his Undertow by standing near your minions, causing him to push the wave. Your presence will deny his last-hitting, and he will fall behind quickly. Don't be afraid to tank his Undertow + Reckless Swing combo, because he cannot burst fast enough before you heal with your Q. If he tries to lifesteal with Vicious Strikes, you can land free damage on him, further negating his sustain. DO NOT pull him when he ults, because he is CC Immune. Rather, follow him closely and time your Apprehend to pull him when it wears off.
Jarvan IV
Do not underestimate Jarvan's damage with his E + Q combo. It will melt through your armour and your health bar if you do not sidestep quickly. If you make mistakes against him, he will take control of the lane. You can pull him out of his dash with your Apprehend, nullifying his engage and his escape. He has no sustain, so stick your bleed on him whenever possible.
Gangplank
Gangplank is a very oppressive top laner because his barrels serve as a huge intimidation in lane. If he wanders too close, Apprehend him and wait for his oranges before applying your slows onto him. He cannot fight you after he uses his initial barrel + Parrrley combo, which have high cooldowns at early levels.
Aurelion Sol
For some reason, people really like to play Aurelion Sol in the top lane. He can kite you to your death with Rylai's and his stun, but if you land even a single pull, you automatically win the trade unless he pushes you away.
Dr. Mundo
You can force fights with him if he wanders too close. Once you get 5 blood stacks, you can just walk back and he'll burn even more of his own health to try and chase you.
Aatrox
Aatrox can snowball surprisingly well if he outplays you. You can easily deny his sustain by standing on the minion wave. You cannot outduel him straight up, but will overall win the trade by wearing down his health.
Ekko
He has all the tools necessary to kite and dodge your skills. If he ever misses even one of his abilities, his combo momentum stops and you can counter engage.
Taliyah
Cannot win in any 1v1's against you. If she ults, she'll instantly hop off because of your bleed! Hook her, and sidestep her knockup. Free lane, but she can roam well.
Vladimir
Ask your jungler to camp Vladimir hard. You must keep the pressure on him at all times, or else he will heal all the damage you deal in a matter of seconds. You cannot 1v1 him in an equal scenario because his skillset is made for kiting away and sustaining long fights, which is Darius's playstyle.
Camille
If you kite her true damage skill, you can easily overpower her throughout the game.
Why should you read this guide?
I threw in a couple of my worse games to prove that I'm also human :)
My name is FrostFlare12. I have been playing Darius since Season 2 and I am currently in the Platinum ELO on the North America server (NA).
The feeling of completely destroying your enemies and taking over the game really appeals to me, so I picked the high damaging yet durable sub-class of Juggernauts as my main focus.
This guide covers how I generally build my Darius, but playstyles are subjective through everyone.
This chapter is at the top because it is so important! How many times I've seen Darius' run into the enemy team to be instantly bursted and costing their team the game.
This chapter details the primary goals of Darius in a teamfight.
tl;dr at the bottom of rant.
If the enemy engages onto your team,
STAY NEAR YOUR CARRIES.
Your carry teammates are the only thing separating you from a win or a loss.
Protect them at all costs.
They are the gateway to your P E N T A K I L L .
Resetting Noxian Guillotine in fights is beyond important, as you have the potential to do upwards of 5000+ true damage to the opposing team.
With Darius' Hemorrhage breathing down their necks, they will feel intimidated to approach your carries, therefore alleviating pressure against your team while also making the enemy team uncoordinated.
YOU ARE NOT THE PRIMARY INITIATOR.
Do NOT run into the enemy team without your entire team following up. You have only a single short range CC ability, so you cannot reach their back line without putting yourself in danger of being blown up.
A dead Darius is a useless one.
If you die without even getting a single reset, you will likely be the target of your team's harassment, and nobody likes that.
Therefore, be a team player. This does not mean you should never steal kills with your ultimate now and again, as long as you use that kill to leverage your lead and gain big air during resets. If anybody comes to try to save the enemy, Noxian Guillotine is waiting to mop up the fight.
Banshee's Veil: Just when they think they've got you. Block whatever you want.
I'm the only magic allowed on the court.
Phantom Dancer: 12% less damage for a raidboss, and more movement? I'll take it.
Spooky.
Summary
Summary
Darius is very powerful in the right hands, but don't forget that you still need your team's cooperation to be able to carry to your full potential.
Whether it be picking champion compositions with strong CC, or your teammates allowing themselves to be focused to let you get free resets, Darius is not able to 1v5 against a competent (and/or) CC heavy enemy team.
The hallmarks of a skilled Darius player are being able to land Apprehend consistently, comboing skills fluidly, and executing enemies quickly within the threshold of Noxian Guillotine.
Practice these and once you are comfortable with them, you will be a formidable opponent no matter the circumstances.
