Introduction

Hey everyone, welcome to my fifth champion guide, this time about Nunu & Willump! I will focus on the support side of him, if you prefer him as jungler or any other role you should stop reading now and search for another guide. If you are looking for a fun champion, who can deal a lot of damage while still being tanky, you have chosen the right champion. Nunu & Willump is most viable in 5v5, I do not recommend playing him on 3v3 or Dominion. Well, enough of an intro for now, let's start with the actual guide!

I hope you enjoy reading, that you will learn a lot about support Nunu & Willump and that you will play him with great success!

Runes

I take gold per 10 Quints, to keep my income stable. I also take Armor Marks and Seals, and Magic Resist per level Glyphs, to get some more defense.

Runes

Precision
Fleet Footwork
Phase Rush

In your runepage, it should look like this:

Other good runes include:

R
U
N
E
S
fillerfillerfill - Magic Penetration Marks, in case you prefer more damage over defense
- gp/10 Seals, in case you prefer the extra gold over the extra defense
- Flat Magic Resist Glyphs, if you are up against harassing supports or AD Carries that also deal magic damage
- Flat Health Quintessences, in case you prefer the extra HP over the bonus gold
- Movement Speed Quintessences, in case you feel the bonus MS is more useful than bonus gold
fillerfillerfill
R
U
N
E
S

Also, please do not waste your IP/RP and buy tier 1 or tier 2 runes. Just be patient, wait until you get Summoner Level 20 and buy tier 3 runes. You can not sell your old runes, you can put them in some sort of blender and hope you will get something nice, but it is not worth it.

Masteries

Offense

Defense

Perseverance (1 point) just to advance

Durability for the nice hp boost

Hardiness for the bonus Armor

Resistance for the bonus Magic Resist

Veteran's Scars for the nice hp

Tenacious to reduce any Crowd Control against you

Utility

Summoner's Insight to improve Flash

Wanderer for the bonus Movement Speed

Mastermind to reduce the cooldowns of Exhaust and Flash

Artificer to reduce the cooldown on Shurelya's Battlesong

Greed to help your income

Awareness (1 point) for the nice bonus XP

- I will probably have to explain why I'm not going 21 points in 1 tree. Personally I don't think Tenacious is REALLY good on any champion, so I really want to take that. However Greed is also necessary to keep your income at a decent level. Either way, if you prefer 21 points in either tree, that's all up to you.

Summoner Spells

I've listed all Summoner Spells available on Summoner's Rift, the higher it is the better I consider it.

Despite the recent nerf, still the best Summoner Spell in the game. So useful in chasing and running away, can't go without it :)
Probably the best choice to go along with Flash. This spell is very useful in bot lane when fighting 2v2, but also still nice in team fights later on.
Not entirely sure how this matches up against Exhaust but I think it's better. However I haven't tried this out yet so I'll update later.
Not such a great spell, you're basically getting free wards from Ruby Sightstone so you won't really need this. Besides, you'll give up some lane control if the enemy support takes Exhaust.
Viable option to replace Flash with if you are not level 12, or if you simply think Ghost is the better spell since the Flash nerf.
Might be of use to deal some damage, but usually you use this to secure a kill and you are the king of assists.
Good spell for your AD Carry but not for you - like I said earlier, if you're the focus, the enemy is doing something wrong.
Commonly taken by your AD Carry but nothing for you, really. It's a good thing if the enemy focuses you, since your carries can deal damage.
No reason at all to take this spell, you use this to gank or to defend a lane which both are not your job.
You are not a jungler, so there is absolutely no reason to take this spell. blablablablablablablablabla
Only viable when you're very much behind, or when you take Teleport along with it. But you're not really a base defender or the hero that can change the game...
Please no. Your passive allows you to cast free spells and you aren't mana hungry, anyways. This spell is probably the most useless one you can take.

Skill Explanation and Sequence

Nunu & Willump's passive is Visionary. It is a bit of a meh passive, which remained from the days he was played in the jungle a lot. If you manage to not push your lane, not last hit but autoattack this will save you from mana trouble. However that is nearly impossible... Taric players will know how to do this. Whenever you are in a teamfight and you are not ulting, keep autoattacking enemies for this to proc. It might be the difference between a kill and a death!

His Q is Consume. It deals no damage to champions (in fact you can not even use it on a champion) but it deals fair damage to minions and best of all, it heals! When running away, it can pay off to run near an enemy minion or neutral monster, to gain some quick health. You can also do that to steal creeps in the enemy jungle, as well as deal damage to Dragon/Baron. And the best part is, even if the minion you use this on does not have as much hp as damage you deal, you still get healed for the full amount!

The W spell is Blood Boil. It gives an Attack Speed and Movement Speed bonus to yourself and any allied unit. It is pretty cheap, so especially in teamfights you should constantly cast this on your AD carry. It helps him/her with the Attack Speed buff, and the Movement Speed buff is nice for you to position yourself to cast your ult. In laning phase you should use this whenever you feel like going aggressive, or when your AD carry has difficulty farming. Try to use this on a minion when pushing a turret (preferably a siege minion) and enjoy the results! My point is - never use this on yourself.

The E ability is Ice Blast. It does exactly the opposite of Blood Boil; it decreases the Movement Speed and Attack Speed for an enemy unit. Use this on the enemy AD carry to greatly reduce his/her damage outputm if he/she is dead or not around, use this on the enemy you are chasing.

His ultimate ability is Absolute Zero. It is an AoE ability, which deals massive damage to any enemy in it at the end of the spell. Be wary; it is rather easily interrupted, even if you right click anywhere or cast an ability you can interrupt it yourself. It will also be interrupted by a silence, stun, knockup, or knockback. Absolute Zero es absolutely #1 huehuehuehue... okay bad jokes aside, this is probably the hardest move of all to properly use. Try to use your item actives and other abilities to support your positioning. Try to get a teammates to bait the enemy in a brush. If you are in a brush the enemy can not see you using your ult, which can give some surprising effects... You can also use this to stop enemies from chasing. As it slows, it will be harder for enemies to keep chasing. It also decreases the enemy's attack speed!

Put a point in Absolute Zero whenever you can, max Ice Blast first, Blood Boil second and Consume last. Just like this:

NOTE: If you are going to take the double golems, put a point in Blood Boil at level 1.

However, with certain teammates it can be better to first level Blood Boil and Ice Blast second. Good examples are Vayne and Kog'Maw!

Items

Sight Ward

I personally like to start with Faerie Charm, Rejuvenation Bead, Sight Ward and a potion of choice (usually Mana Potion since W heals). However you can leave out either Faerie Charm or Rejuvenation Bead to buy some more wards at the beginning.

Philosopher's Stone Kage's Lucky Pick

Philosopher's Stone On your first trip back you should be able to buy a Philosopher's Stone and a Sightstone, hopefully. If not, buy the most expensive of those 2.

On the second trip back, buy Boots and a Pick. This should give you a good mix of income, sustain, damage and mobility. Kage's Lucky Pick

Emblem of Valor As first "big" item you'll want Aegis of the Legion, unless someone else in your team is already building it. Make sure you don't buy 2 as the effect does not stack except on those who've bought it. If you can't buy it yet, get an Emblem of Valor and upgrade it later.

First up is the Ruby Sightstone for some more HP and the bonus Wards, to give some more map control. It's quite cheap to upgrade, anyways.

Now upgrade the Philosopher's Stone to a Shurelya's Battlesong. The item has paid itself off by now, so time for the upgrade. The CDR will help you, but the active is the nicest part about this item. Use it to engage or to run away, whichever suits the situation best.

It's about time to upgrade your boots. I personally prefer Ninja Tabi since you'll be in the middle of the fight but if you prefer Mercury's Treads or Ionian Boots of Lucidity that's fine with me.

Next is Runic Bulwark - nice upgrade to Aegis of the Legion which gives even more HP and Magic Resist to you and Magic Resist to your allies.

Great item which gives a nice boost in HP and Armor. The active is also very nice to help you deal damage from your ult.

Very nice item that gives a nice mix of Magic Resist and damage. If you like you could also take a Banshee's Veil.

If the game lasts this long you can upgrade your boots with an Enchantment. I personally prefer Enchantment: Alacrity, but Enchantment: Captain can work very well too.

//alternative

Decent item if your team needs pushing power, but I'd prefer Aegis of the Legion/ Runic Bulwark over this item any day.

Great item to help you cast your ult properly. However I think Abyssal Mask is slightly better as it makes you deal more damage, but if their team has some CC you might want to get this instead.

Not that you will really need it for the mana regen but the active is ridiculously strong.

Nice item if their team has a lot of champs who rely on spell vamp/life steal. blablablablablablablablabla

Excellent item for tower diving/pushing, and the basic stats it gives aren't measly either.

THE item of AP-based champions, if your team lacks in damage you'll want this item. blablablablablablablablabla

Great defensive item, best used if their team has a lot of AD based champions. The active is really nice and the health and armor really help out.

Pretty decent item, but I do not consider this core as you already slow people. You could upgrade your Kage's Lucky Pick and sell it later for Abyssal Mask.

Great item if every time enemies escape at low hp from team fights. Otherwise, not so much.

Very good item if you need the hp and hp regen. blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla

Great item if your team has a lot of AP based champions, and for some reason they do not buy this. Also goes well with your Q if you let it go over a minion wave.

Great item if your team has a lot of AD based champions. blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla Zeke's Herald

//boots

Decent boot upgrade if you feel like you need CDR over the defense Ninja Tabi grant.

Good choice of boots if their team has a lot of CC. blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla

General Tips

You will mostly lane with a ranged DPS champion like Ashe or Graves, but a melee DPS champion like Tryndamere or Talon also works nicely. Anything else will not work really well, and laning with another support just plain sucks.

You have so much sustain, laning against any melee champion is very doable. You will find yourself in more trouble against ranged champions, so keep your distance.

Be aggressive! Nunu & Willump is the kind of support who deals quite some damage and enables his AD carry to deal a lot of damage too. If you play passive you have picked the wrong champion. ALWAYS have a ward up, in case their jungler comes to gank. More explanation about warding is found in the section below :)

Ashe
SPACE If you want to slow your enemy forever, this is the AD carry you want. No escape for any enemy in any chase. Pretty good lane, I'd say.
Caitlyn
SPACE Your Blood Boil is nice for her Headshot and your Ice Blast will help her hit her Piltover Peacemaker. This lane should work out nicely ;)
Corki
SPACE Aggression enough. Once about level 4 the 2 of you can probably instantly kill an enemy. Awesome lane!
Draven
SPACE Not that good of a lane, he has his own AS buff with Blood Rush so you become a bit obsolete.
Ezreal
SPACE Same as Corki, his burst is pretty big. I am not sure if the attack speed debuff from Ice Blast and Essence Flux stacks, but this is a good lane either way.
Graves
SPACE Graves is more of a caster, who relies more on his abilities than on his autoattacks (at least in early game). He has his own attack speed steroid, so I would not recommend playing Nunu & Willump with him.
Kennen
SPACE Can certainly work, your Blood Boil will help his Electrical Surge procs. Not to mention your ults together simply devastate enemies.
Kog
SPACE YES! This is one of the best AD carries you can lane with. His Bio-Arcane Barrage benefits SO much from your Blood Boil!
MF
SPACE Also an aggressive laner, she falls of a little late game so you will need to get early game kills. What else than Nunu & Willump do you want? Not to mention that 2 AoE ults are pretty nice in one lane ;)
Sivir
SPACE Mhm. Not that great of a lane, even though her burst is unparalleled in mid game. Her ult + Blood Boil is pretty funny though. Not that bad but there are better choices.
Trist
SPACE Again an aggressive laner. However she has her own attack speed steroid, rendering you kind of useless. If you want to have some good time ult in the brush, and have Tristana ult someone into your ult :D
Urgot
SPACE Yeap. Click here to see how hilarious his ult and your ult can be together xD Besides that this is not a great lane, he does not rely on attack speed at all.
Varus
SPACE Not that great of a lane, he is more of a caster and does not really rely on attack speed that much. You could do this but hey, there are better picks.
Vayne
SPACE OH YES. Probably the #1 AD carry to pair with Nunu & Willump. Her Silver Bolts will love your Blood Boil, dealing a real lot of damage.

Warding

But seriously, warding is the most important job of a support. Doesn't mean that other people should not do it (in early game your jungler (probably along with Wriggle's Lantern), your top laner (to stop ganks from their jungler) and your mid (to stop ganks from top, bot and jungler) will also do it.), but in mid and late game you will be the one placing the most wards. You should always have at least 3 in your inventory as soon as teamfights start to break out.

Anyways, if you are new to the support role, or if you don't know where to place wards, here are a bunch of screenshots to help you.

In case you have played more often, and you know the map, I took an image from the internet and used Paint to draw some circles to show you where you should place wards in certain stages:

Early game
Mid-late game
When doing Dragon or Baron, respectively
Black : When pushing the midlane

And the rest of this section shows screenshots of that place, in case you do not know the map by heart yet.

In early game, you will want to place wards here:

Oracles and Vision Wards

At the start, if the enemy has any champion with a stealth mechanism in the bot lane or the jungle, you could get some until you can buy Oracles. When everyone hits about level 7, you should always have one up near Dragon so you can destroy the enemy ward that is probably there. Later on, having one at Baron is also great. For the rest, I do not recommend using them as a Sight Ward gives you pretty much the same vision.

Almost all the time if the enemy team has any stealth ability. Oracles detect them when they are close to you.
Otherwise I do not recommend taking them early, they are quite costly and if you die you will have to spend another 400 gold. One way or another, get your gp/10 items first.
Reasoning behind this is that usually, your jungler gets one early. If he/she doesn't, you could consider it but a Vision Ward usually does the job just fine.

The other good thing about getting an Oracle is that you can clear enemy wards. Especially in bot lane, this will be of good use. Clear the 2 lane brushes, tribrush, river and dragon wards whenever you can, so your jungler can have free reign!

Teamfights

The enemy AD carry. Simply because you counter him/her so hard with Ice Blast, Absolute Zero and Randuin's Omen. Once he/she is dead, try to get the other AD based champions away from your carries, after which you take out the AP carry and the support.

Anyone who can cancel your ult. Probably even more scary are teammates who initiate fights. Nunu & Willump works really well if their team initiates, not that much if your team initiates.

In the middle of the enemy team. Try to catch as many people with Absolute Zero as it deals a real lot of damage.

Ranked Play

Nunu & Willump is a situational pick, so he is not often played. However with certain AD carries he goes really well, and he is certainly very viable.

So, when is a good time to pick him?
  • If you have an aggressive AD carry to lane with
  • If your team does not have a support already
  • If your team has enough disables to help you with your ultimate

To do list

Here's a list of things I still want to do, in order of most important to least important:

  • Improve the Champion match up list
  • Proper warding screenshots, using the right champion at least :P
  • Scores from my ranked adventures
  • Hopefully I'll figure out a way to make my own videos
