Main Katarina since 2013.

Reached Challenger most of seasons.
Currently I have over 4kk mastery points with Katarina.

I definitely love Katarina and that's why this guide is here.

I decided to create this guide because I have a lot of knowledge about Katarina and I believe I can help others players to perform better after reading this guide.

Katarina Skill Info
The passive Voracity it's what Katarina is about, the resets are the most important part of her kit. Always enjoy the most of it to be useful and help yourself and your team.
The skill Bouncing Blades it's really important for poke, but also for laning to control your positioning in trades and to escape from ganks or enemy skills along with Shunpo.
The skill Preparation it's really good to use with combos. Can be used to dodge skills, to chase enemies and escape from ganks, also can be really helpful with tricks such as jumps over walls with Shunpo.
The skill Shunpo it's really important for the entire Katarina combo. This skill is really good for chasing enemies, runaway from ganks, jump into daggers over walls and repositioning yourself in fights.
The skill Death Lotus it's really good to collect kills. Should be used after the combo or during it. Really good for assist her passive due its AOE damage.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you manage to use the maximum potential of the daggers, you can win a losing game in decisive team fight. So abuse all the possible mechanics the dagger may offer to you, including the fact that you can reset basic attacks with Katarina's E.
The more basic attacks you do, the better you'll perform and give way more damage to the target, but remember - it depends on the situation.
You can add Flash into this combination to dodge or chase enemies and perform even better.
The combos can be used with any rune but sometimes they may work better with Conqueror than Electrocute, same to the others runes, it depends on what you're planning to.


Dagger Mechanics

How To Bouncing Blades

The bounce will only work if the target is closer to it, so always choose carefully so it goes the way you want it.
Abuse this mechanic to poke enemies through the minions.


How To Preparation

You can use Preparation to repositioning yourself, to run after enemies, during your combo, to dodge skills or more. You can pass through units while you are under the movement speed effect.


Revealing Dagger

You can use Preparation or Bouncing Blades near somewhere without vision and if the dagger falls there it will grant vision for a short period of time.


How To Shunpo

Jumping on daggers is different than jumping on targets, as you gain a higher range to use the skill and because of that it can be advantageous in trading, escaping and chasing situations.


How To Wall Jump

The wall jump will only work if the dagger border is close enough to pass the other side when you jump, so be sure to put your dagger the nearest possible and jump in the edge of it. Some places are tricky so you have to practice more than once.


How To Travelling Dagger

This travelling dagger mechanic can be really usefull if your daggers are in the ground so you can surprise enemies and combo them to death. The first dagger must spin before you catch the second one with flash, so you use shunpo in the target.


How To Death Lotus

The Death Lotus can really be useful against camouflaged champions like Teemo or Kha'Zix. Enjoy the most of its range since is really good in teamfights to kill weak champions. If you're hiding and use your ultimate it will reveal your position, unless you're using Draktharr.

Lane Trades

QEW
+ +AA+ +AA+

This trade is the most used by Katarina players, you gonna use it to give a little damage to later finish the target. Works better with Electrocute. You can do this 2/3 times and then combos to kill the target.


Duel Combos

EWQE Combo
AA+ + +AA+AA+ +AA+ +AA+AA+AA+ +AA

This combo is one of the strongest for Katarina using her skills and basic attacks, it is most used against melee champions or when they are closer to you, but you can use E+W+AA+AA+Q+AA+E+AA likewise.


QEEW Combo
+ +AA+AA+AA+ + +AA+AA+AA+ +AA

This combo is ok for Katarina, as long as you don't waste your W you'll be fine. Always perform EW+AA so you don't miss it. This is good against ranged champions when they are closer to your tower, you can just chase them to death.


Killing Level 3

The combos are really good for grant early kills even against hard matchups, if you manage to hit all basic attacks with skills and ignite, you gonna probably win.


Ultimate Combos

EWQER Combo
+ +AA+AA+ +AA+ +AA+ +AA+ +AA

This combo with ultimate gives the maximum potential with basic attacks and skills, you can add another AA in the first attack if they are closer to you as well.


QEEWR Combo
+ +AA+AA+ + +AA+ +AA+ +AA

This combo with ultimate is a mix of the previous combos but it's really strong due to EW+R, in addition this is really good for dodge enemy skills while performing all in.


EWQRE Combo
+ +AA+AA+ + + +AA+AA+AA+ +AA

This combo with ultimate is really good to follow enemies when they are trying to flee during your ultimate, you can add another AA in the first attack if they are closer to you as well.


QEWRE Combo
+ + + +AA+ +AA

This combo is used when you're really ahead or if you are going to enter a team fight with alot of targets around, it is not the best combo, but it is good against weak or low health champions when you need to finish them or faster resets.

Electrocute

The Electrocute rune is ideal for lane trades, which you should perform once in a while, every 25-20 seconds (depending on the level), whenever the rune is active for use.
The rune is excellent for pick-offs and quick kills, as its damage triggers every 3 consecutive attacks or skills in a short period of time.
The rune is also activated by Katarina's ultimate Death Lotus on the 3rd dagger of all 15.
You can use this rune with AD or AP items.
Rune damage is scaled by 40% in AD and 25% in AP.

It has synergy with the mythical item Hextech Rocketbelt as the item's asset is like an ability to proc the rune, ideal for builds with a lot of damage.


The Conqueror rune is ideal for continuous fights in lane, in which you will intersperse basic attacks and skills.
The rune is excellent for all-in and team fights because of the increased damage as it completes rune stacks (12), dealing more damage while also healing during the fight. After hitting 12 stacks, 9% of its damage converts to healing.
Its cooldown gonna appear only if you stop attacking, reseting the stacks.
Katarina's ultimate Death Lotus can complete all 12 stacks in half of the skill's execution time.
You can use this rune with AD or AP items.
Rune damage is scaled to 1.2~2.7 AD and 2~5 AP in each stack for 5 seconds (12 stacks / according to level).

It has synergy with the mythical items Riftmaker and Kraken Slayer due to the omnivamp passive and true damage, as more attacks are performed, the more potential it will have, ideal for builds with on-hit effects.


Dark Harvest

The Dark Harvest rune is ideal for roaming and team fights, which will get you stacks with enemies below 50% health.
The rune is excellent in longer matches as with multiple stacks it can do a lot of damage, even surpassing the Electrocute rune.
It has a high cooldown, but if used strategically it can be very strong. After champion take downs its passive resets to 1,5 seconds.
Rune damage is scaled to 25% AD and 15% AP.

It has synergy with the mythical items Hextech Rocketbelt and Night Harvester due to the active items that deal additional damage to proc the rune, ideal for builds with a lot of damage.


The Lethal Tempo rune is ideal for continuous fights in lane, in which you will intersperse basic attacks and skills
The rune is excellent for all in and team fights due to the increase in attack speed as it completes the rune stacks, 13% in each stack till reach 78%, causing more attacks per second and potentially exceeding 2.5. Upon completing the stack, you gain 50 attack range.
Its cooldown gonna appear only if you stop attacking, reseting the stacks.
Katarina's ultimate Death Lotus can complete stacks and depending on the amount of champions hit by the ultimate can stack almost instantly, in addition, the ultimate also receives increased damage due to attack speed bonuses, if you have at least one AD item or AD damage source.

First Strike

The First Strike rune is ideal for roaming and lane trades, which will get you gold bonus when fighting enemy targets for a short period of time, which you should perform once in a while, every 25-15 seconds (depending on the level), whenever the rune is active for use.
The rune is excellent in shorter and medium matches as over time you can farm a lot of gold and get items faster, the Electrocute and Press the Attack runes are very similar to this one, because of cooldown and the 10% bonus attack damage for 3s you take. If you don't make the first attack, the rune goes into cooldown, but if used strategically, it can be very strong to get you to buy items faster or get back into the game when you're behind.
All sources of damage you deal grant 10% bonus damage to the target as true damage.

It has synergy with the mythical items Kraken Slayer and Riftmaker due to the passive of each of them, as all types of damage, including true damage, are accumulated in the damage bonus and in exchange for that you receive 100% of the damage dealt as gold, so the more damage resources you have, the more gold you get, ideal for builds with on-hit effects and different damage sources.


The Press the Attack rune is ideal for continuous and short trades in lane or team fights, in which you will intersperse basic attacks and skills, during 6 seconds.
The rune is excellent for all in and team fights due to the increased damage as it completes the 3rd mark, increasing the damage to 8% up to 12% according to level. After completing the 3rd mark, you will damage the target from 40 up to 180 as bonus adaptive damage according to level.
The rune works with Shunpo and basic attacks and it will only activate with Death Lotus as long as you are using Guinsoo's Rageblade then every 3rd attack (each 3 of 15 daggers) will proc the rune as well.

It has synergy with the mythical items Kraken Slayer and Riftmaker due to the passive of each of them, either with true damage or more healing as more attacks are performed, since the rune increases the damage for all sources, ideal for builds with on-hit effects and different damage sources.


Grasp Of The Undying

The rune Grasp of the Undying is ideal for lane trades and bruiser and tank builds, as it scales according to how much you activated the rune during the match.
After 4 seconds during combat, your next basic attack on a champion will deal bonus magic damage equal to 4% of your max health and heal you for 2% of your max health, permanently increasing your health by 5 when you proc it.
It works with basic attacks, Shunpo, Preparation and Death Lotus and on-hit effect items.

It has synergy with the mythical items Divine Sunderer and Riftmaker due to the passive of each of them, either with more healing with the on-hit effect that heals you in 65% of the 12% strengthened damage or from the omnivamp as well, ideal for builds with high health amount.




DOMINATION



- Taste of Blood
It's excellent for lane trades as it heals you on doing damage, 18~35 (scale with +20% AD and +10% AP), based on level. Against champions like Zed Talon Akali Zoe Kassadin LeBlanc Vladimir can be a great choice. You can combo the rune's potential with the Doran's Shield or Doran's Blade item, boosting your healing and life stealing on the opponent in the lane. Recommended rune for all builds.

- Eyeball Collection
It's an excellent choice for roaming and easier lanes where you'll get plenty of kills, as it collects eyeballs when taking down champions and takes additional adaptive damage of 1.2 attack damage or 2 ability power per globe collected. When you complete stacks, you gain 18 attack damage or 30 ability power, as adaptive damage. Recommended rune for AD build.

- Ravenous Hunter
It's an excellent choice for matches where you'll have a lot of roaming and constant fights. When taking down champions the rune grants omnivamp and can get up to 7.5% when completing stacks (5). The omnivamp percentage is very strong and is very useful for team fights. The rune grants +1.5% universal vampirism per kill. Recommended rune for all builds.

- Sudden Impact
It's great for continuous fights and even trades as it grants 7 lethality and 6 magic penetration for 5 seconds after using an dash such as Katarina's Shunpo. In addition, damage done by items that apply on-hit effects are also strengthened with this rune, such as Lich Bane Nashor's Tooth and others that apply on-hit effects, but this rune is more viable for AP builds.

- Relentless Hunter
It's a great option to roam and ensure more control over the game in general, allowing you to follow fights that might happen across the map. Each kill grants more movement speed, up to 13% additional movement speed. With this rune, you don't need to use the boots, it guarantees 45 movement speed, being able to do full build without boots, without losing damage and movement speed. Recommended rune for all builds.

- Zombie Ward
It's great for more difficult lanes and matches where you can't roam or kill the player in the middle lane, but can at least remove the vision. When you take down an enemy team ward you automatically summon a zombie ward who will take the place of the enemy ward for 120 seconds, and it doesn't count against the default ward limit. If you have a friendly ward near the enemy ward you take down, you'll instead gain a zombie ward in your standard ward stock that can be used anywhere within the next 30 seconds. Gains 1.2 attack damage or 2 ability power (adaptive) for each zombie ward that appears, up to 10 in total, when completing stacks, gains 18 attack damage or 30 ability power as adaptive damage. Recommended rune for AD build.

- Ingenious Hunter
It's a great option to ensure more use of active items, such as Sheen, Divine Sunderer, Zhonya's Hourglass, Sterak's Gage and even Guardian Angel, reducing a lot of the time of items that have high cooldown for activation. Recommended rune for all builds.




PRECISION



- Triumph
It is excellent for solo and team fights which leave you with low health, as with each kill or assist, you recover 12% of your missing health, preventing you from dying from Ignite and being able to continue in fights for more time. Recommended rune for all builds.

- Legend: Tenacity
It's excellent for reducing the time of crowd controls (except the airbone like Rupture and suppression like Nether Grasp) and ensure your survival in fights. Gets 5% base tenacity plus an additional 2.5% for each rune stack, can stack by taking down champions, epic monsters, large monsters, or minions in lane, up to a maximum of 30%. Recommended rune for all builds.

- Coup de Grace
It's good for killing weaker champions like Ashe or Caitlyn ADCs, or any other champions that are low on health, as the rune adds 8% damage to champions that are below 40% of life. Recommended rune for all builds.

- Legend: Alacrity
It's great for playing against enemy teams that don't have strong crowd control. It grants a 3% base attack speed boost with an additional 1.5% for each rune stack, which can stack by taking down champions, epic monsters, large monsters, or minions in lane, up to a maximum of 18%.
In addition, the attack speed also increases Death Lotus damage from Katarina by 12.8%, as long as you have at least one item of AD damage.
Recommended use only when the enemy team has crowd control of airbones or suppressions, as they cannot be reduced by the tenacity effect. Recommended rune for AD build.

- Legend: Bloodline
It's great for solo fights as it helps with health recovery on life steal applied to basic attacks, up to a total of 9% with stacks. It can be a good choice against champions who attack closely like Yasuo or Yone. It grants 0.6% health steal for each rune stack, and can stack by taking down champions, epic monsters, large monsters, or minions in lane, up to a maximum of 9%. Recommended rune for AD build.

- Cut Down
It's great against teams that have a lot of tank champions, as the % damage applied is calculated from 5% (with champions 10% more max health than you) to 15% (champions with up to 100% more max health than you). From 200 (lower champion levels) and 400 (higher champion levels) health difference, you already start to see the increased damage. Recommended rune for all builds.

- Last Stand
It's good against champions that burst more than you (like the Talon - when you try to solo him, he will possibly almost kill you, and if he leaves you low on health, with this rune your damage is increased and so it is possible to avoid being killed if both are low on health). The rune increases by 5~11% damage according to the amount of health, starting from 60%, increasing to the maximum percentage if you are below 30% health.
If their team is very strong, but at the same time weak, in team fights this rune Last Stand can be even better than the other runes, being able to come out alive from fights due to having killed them before due to the % of the rune that increases alot of damage. Recommended rune for all builds.




RESOLVE



- Demolish
It is really good against champions who roams alot, but also can be pretty good for punishing towers and control objectives, the more plating you get on towers, the more gold you'll have to buy items. Recommended rune for Bruiser and Tank builds.

- Bone Plating
After taking damage from champions their next 3 skills or attacks will be greatly reduced with this rune. It is really good against assassins at early levels, get it against champions like Zed, Talon Fizz or LeBlanc to deny the effectiveness of their combos. Recommended rune for all builds.

- Overgrowth
This is really good for scaling as bruiser or tank due its additional 3,5% max health you receive when it stacks, may help you to survive in situations you'd die if you were low health and not using this rune. Recommended rune for Bruiser and Tank builds.

- Unflinching
It's a great rune against champions that may need to use crowd control on you in order to be able to win the matchup such as Zoe or Syndra, Lux, Neeko, Lissandra, Vex and even Leona. It is really strong in early levels against CC champions. Similar as Legend: Tenacity but in a different way, you'll receive more tenacity when you reach 30% of your maximum health or below it. 10% tenacity with full health and 30% tenacity if you are with 30% health or below. Recommended rune for all builds.

- Second Wind
This rune is really good against matchups that do trade alot such as Orianna, LeBlanc or any ranged champion. The point of this rune is to grant your survival with health regeneration, gives you 6+4% of your missing health over 10 seconds, you can add Doran's Shield to empower its regeneration and be able to survive any pressure you may have in lane. Recommended rune for all builds.

- Conditioning
It's great if you're against weak champions, since Katarina has high base damage with skills and basic attacks with the right items, this bonus may give her more potential to resist incoming damages and be able to survive, would be used only in the situation if you're against full AD or full AP team. Recommended rune for Bruiser and Tanks builds.

- Revitalize
It's good to use if you're with Conqueror rune since it will increases the healing you'll receive regardless of your life percentual. Also works with Riftmaker and any other item that may give you omnivamp or lifesteal such as Blade of the Ruined King or Ravenous Hydra. Really good for survival. Recommended rune for all builds.




INSPIRATION



- Perfect Timing
This may be really useful to deny ultimates from Zed or Talon or any champion that would hinder your positioning, also this Commencing Stopwatch can provide a really great resource for survival or escaping death events. Recommended rune for AP and AD builds.

- Future's Market
This rune is really strong if used wisely. You can buy items that you wouldn't be able to if you were not with this rune and you can just teleport on places and collect kills to buy more items, helps you buy items faster than usual and because of that you gonna have advantage in lane or in any further teamfights. Should be used against hardest matchups since you can't farm properly against them. Recommended rune for all builds.

- Minion Dematerializer
This can be really useful against matchups that pushs alot and you can't farm properly in early game. Can be used to level faster than the enemy and because of that you can just reach level 3 first and then all in for a kill and this can be game-changing. With this you can also push way faster your lane and roam to collect kills in sides. Recommended rune for all builds.

- Biscuit Delivery
This rune is overrated as it seems to be useless, but if you think about the fact it restores 12% of your missing health it is really strong. Can be used to avoid death during an all in and you can use it together with Time Warp Tonic and Conqueror to increase your healing potential. You have to abuse it in early levels forcing fights or otherwise it will be useless for Katarina. Recommended rune for all AP and AD.

- Cosmic Insight
This rune is really good if you're planning to roam alot of times. It is not bad, but either not the best. Should be used against hard matchups to be able to control your lane or to follow fights along with Teleport. Recommended rune for AP build.

- Time Warp Tonic
This rune healing is really insane if you do it with Conqueror and Biscuit Delivery, it will restores 50% of potion or biscuit health recovery immediately. You gain 5% bonus movement speed while under the effect of both, which can help you chase or run away during fights. Really good to duel in early levels, no one will expect that healing. Recommended for AP and AD builds.




SORCERY



- Absolute Focus
This rune is really good for scaling damage with items such as Nashor's Tooth or Lich Bane, good to use for roaming purposes and with Electrocute. Should be picked if you're against easy matchups, good for early all in with Conqueror as well. Recommended rune for AP and AD builds.

- Gathering Storm
It is really good for long matches as it scales considerably and will give more damage to runes like Electrocute or Dark Harvest and will increase on-hit damage from the items Nashor's Tooth, Lich Bane and mostly Rabadon's Deathcap as well. Should be used if you know the match is going to take too long to end or against hard matchups. Recommended rune for all builds.

Note: I'd not recommend other runes with this keystone as they has no significance or leverage compared to the others on Katarina.


Crowd Control


The Legend: Tenacity or Unflinching rune is super important to Katarina because her ultimate Death Lotus is a channeling skill, so it's possible to interrupt it.

Not just for the Death Lotus issue, but also because the Katarina needs to position herself to use the daggers, and the fact that she can reduce all sorts of impact on her positioning is crucial.

When you realize you're fighting champions with a lot of crowd control, like supports such as Lulu Leona Seraphine Bard Braum or junglers like Fiddlesticks Amumu Elise Lillia, grant extra protection with these runes.

A great Queen needs tenacity!




What spell should I use?
Must
Ignite is a spell that you should always use to assist your kills and especially in team fights so you don't miss resets, it's recommended for most matches.
Teleport is a spell you should use to collect kills. Recommended for matches that you need to control lane and objectives plus helping your team.
Situational
Flash is a spell that you should use for survival and aggression, especially in trades at lane and team fights or even to escape death. It's great for collecting kills and helps with resets.
Cleanse is a spell that you should use for survival and repositioning, especially in trades at lane and team fights or even to avoid death. It's great to use against crowd control matchups like Zoe and Annie.
Exhaust is a spell you should use for survival and outplay, especially in trades at lane and in team fights against champions who deal a lot of damage.

AP

The build with AP items is
great. Getting stronger in
the end due to items like
Nashor's Tooth Lich Bane
that gets stronger as you buy
more AP items. The combo
of QEW skills is very strong.
It also has true damage with
Riftmaker, but not much,
the strongest of the item would
be the part of healing and more
ability power with other legendary
items. The ideal is that this build
is used when your team is with AD
damage so you can do AP damage
without losing your potential and
prevent the enemy team buy magic
resist items. The on-hit effects is
really good for Katarina's
Death Lotus as in late game her
damage will be really high and
along with the reset she will be
unstoppable. Excellent to give one
shot and kill more champions,
weakers or strongers in general.
AD

The build with AD items is
very strong. Mainly in the
early/mid game. Grants you
on-hit effects with items like
Blade of the Ruined King, Ravenous Hydra and Wit's End.
The biggest advantage of this
build are in team fights and
against the ones that have
magical resistance. Due to the
Kraken Slayer, it causes true
additional damage and it increases
this as you do more AD. It's a
very strong item to use with
Katarina's Death Lotus, causing
a lot of damage as the item is
activated by the 15 daggers. The
ideal is that this build should be
used when your team is with
AP damage so you can deal AD
damage without losing your
potential and prevent the enemy
team to make armor. Excellent for
continuous fights, team fights and
killing champions in general.
