Champion Build Guide

The ALP Guide to Alistar Jungle

By AverageLilliaPlayer
About Me
Hello, my name is Average Lillia Player (or ALP for short) though ingame I go by Yoon. As the name suggests, I main Lillia and prefer to avoiding laning as a whole, often queuing for Jungle or Support (but mostly Jungle). Almost all of my time in the game is spent making extremely strange picks in the Jungle work out, anything from meta to borderline throwing, I'm determined to make it work.
Champion Introduction
Abilities

Alistar, The Minotaur
Tank, Support, Mana, Melee, Magic
Clearing: Very Slow Clear [4:04]
Ganking: Above Average
Speciality: Locking Down Champions with CC
Why Jungle Alistar? Alistar is a very versatile pick in the jungle despite his lack of a clear speed. He's slow, yes, but when he's ahead he can do a very surprising amount of damage. He can build tank if you need a frontline, AP if you need the damage, or AD if you have a team full of mages. On top of his versatility, he is an incredibly CC-Heavy champ with a total of three different types of crowd control. He also has a tanky ultimate, even when going AP or AD, and a passive that heals teammates.
Pros and Cons

Pros

Simple
Versatile
Great Late
Lots of CC
Decent Sustain
Easily Feeds Teammates

Cons

Very Slow Clear
High Cooldowns
Struggles Early
Struggles vs Ranged
Bad Disengage
Easily Feeds Enemies
Builds

ABILITY POWER
AP Alistar is certainly the best build for him in the jungle for his high AP scaling and burst potentional later on. If ahead, he can one shot a large selection of champions and CC entire teams.

TANK
Alistar typically builds tank in his normal role, so of course tank would work well enough in the jungle too. We still need some damage in the form of ap tank items, but otherwise it works well enough into bursty teams. Or with teams that are lacking a frontline

AD/CRIT
Crit and attack speed items work well on Alistar because he wants to weave in autos with his attacks anyways. His cc shutdowns allow him plenty of time to do that.
Skill Order
Q
Pulverize

1 / 4 / 5 / 7 / 9
W
Headbutt

2 / 8 / 10 / 12 / 13
E
Trample

3 / 14 / 15 / 17 / 18
R
Unbreakable Will

6 / 11 / 16
> > >
Alistar starts Q as the majority of his damage, both early and late game, stems from his Q. It's an easy stun to hit paired with his W, which we do for level 2.
Level 3 is for his E, giving the worst for last because it really has... no effect on his jungle clear. But in ganks it's great!
Ability Usage in Jungle
PASSIVE ABILITY
Triumphant Roar
Alistar generates a stack of Triumph for each enemy he stuns or each time a nearby enemy minion or non-epic monster dies. At 7 stacks, Alistar consumes them all to heal himself and nearby allied champions. He generates 7 stacks if a nearby enemy champion or epic monster dies.

In the Jungle, Alistar uses this to keep himself at a reasonable health level throughout his clears. It is especially useful clearing Voidgrub's because of all the little Voidmite's acting as a stack for his passive if he kills them.

The heal of this passive scales off of his Health.
Q
Pulverize
Alistar smashes the ground beneath him, stunning any nearby champions and dealing magic damage.

In the Jungle, Alistar uses this ability to clear and CC enemies. There isn't really anything special, but it does have a averagely sized AOE to hit multiple enemies at once.

This scales off of Ability Power.
W
Headbutt
Alistar dashes to an enemy target and if they are nearby when he lands, he deals magic damage and knocks them backwards and stunning them for a short time.

In the Jungle, this is primarily used as a prerequesitie to the Q stun. Dashing in and comboing at the right time with Q allows the enemy to be stunned without being knocked back. It is also a decent peeling and escape tool, but be wary of your surroundings when using it.

This scales off of Ability Power.
E
Trample
Alistar tramples the ground around him, becoming ghosted and dealing magic damage around him. Each time this damages at least one enemy champion, he generates a stack of Trample that lasts for the remaining duration, stacking up to 5 times. At 5 stacks, Alistar's next auto attack stuns an enemy champion and deals bonus magic damage.

In the Jungle, the AOE is good for clearing some camps. It's primary use isn't too different from support Alistar, being used as a stun after W-Q and in conjuction with R.

This scales off of Ability Power.
R
Unbreakable Will
Alistar cleanses himself of CC and for the next 7 seconds, reduces his damage taken by a considerable amount.

In the Jungle, Alistar uses this exclusively to survive team fights and fights.
Objectives
DRAGON
Alistar cannot effectively solo dragons at any point in the game due to his low damage to monsters. It is required to have at least one non-supportive teammate with you, preferably a midlaner or an ADC.

Alistar benefits the most from Chemtech Soul. The benefit to both damage and damage reduction suits Alistar well, as a jungler he wants to be both tanky enough with his ult to survive between his cooldowns and damaging enough to score his own kills and assists.

VOIDGRUBS
Alistar can solo these quite well. It is much easier to do so with both Smite's up, but doable with just one. Alistar heals a great deal by damaging the Voidmite's with his Q or E and stacking his passive by killing them. Plus, his AOE damage helps make the clear a bit faster.

RIFT HERALD
Herald can be solo'd by Alistar, but it takes such an unreasonably long time that it isn't worthwhile doing it alone. It is much better to do it with the help of your teammates, either by having them ward off/kill enemies looking to steal it or by helping you kill it themselves.

VORACIOUS ATAKAHN
Voracious Atakahn will spawn in lower-action games with fewer kills/damage, taking root in whichever side of the map has the most drama within it. It cannot be solo'd by Alistar and shouldn't be attempted without safety being a guarantee. Honestly, most of the time, it might be better to avoid Atakahn fights to begin with - at least avoid starting them. You don't do enough damage by the fifteen minute mark and you certainly can't face tank it for teammates either. Upon (somehow) defeating him, Voracious Atakahn grants a free, one-time use of False Life but instead of reviving right in the middle of the fight, you blink back to your fountain.

RUINOUS ATAKHAN
Alistar jungle relies heavily on teammates in the early game, meaning you wont have much of a say in getting Ruinous Atakahn or Voracious. You bounce around to help your teammates secure objectives and kills, most of the time, rather than doing anything alone. Upon slaying Ruinous Atakhan, you are granted Crown of Carnage which permanently boosts rewards from epic monsters slain aswell as 6 stacks of Bloody Petals.

BARON NASHOR
Alistar cannot solo Baron at any point in the game, but I do prefer it over Elder Drake when on Tank or AD Alistar.

ELDER DRAKE
Alistar cannot solo Elder for the same reasons he cannot solo a normal dragon, but it is the preferred objective with going AP Alistar as it can make your kills go by much faster.
Clearing

RED SIDE
OR

BLUE SIDE
I believe it does not matter which side Alistar starts on, as his clear will usually not be completed on either side before he is either invaded or sees a chance to gank or countergank a lane. However if you wish to start red side, save your smite for Krugs. Alistar might have a slightly slower clear speed when starting on blue side due to AOE camps, so if you truly wish to full clear, this would not be your optimal starting position due to Alistar not having any mana issues.
Core Items
ABILITY POWER
TANK
AD
Feats of Strength
SORCERER'S SHOES
These are the boots you'll be taking on AP Alistar, which is the typical route for jungling. It gives great early game magic penetration, but don't build it first item!

FEATS OF STRENGTH
Feats of Strength is gained by completing two of three objectives before the enemy team. These objectives include 3 epic monsters slain, first blood, and first tower. For Alistar pretty much none of these are viable first options to focus on. First Blood is doable with heavy hitting early game teammates, but alone Alistar cannot do much of anything until the late game. Work around your team and see what they are doing good in then help them there.

SPELLSLINGER'S SHOES
Upgrading SS grants you Spellslinger's Shoes, granting you a boost to Movement Speed and Magic Penetration. These are an easy mid-game purchase for the same reasons that Sorcerer's Shoes are - easily accessed Magic Penetration without the need to buy a full legendary item.
Summary

IN CONCLUSION
-
EARLY GAME: Alistar finds himself barely able to clear one side of his jungle in time for scuttle crab spawn - in short, he's incredibly inefficent in the regular jungle duties. But when it comes time to gank a lane, especially for early game champions or teammates with CC as well, Alistar cannot be beaten. He should be looking for any signs of weakness or lack of vision on the enemy team and instantly capitalize.
MID GAME: Alistar can likely dish out quite a lot of damage on his own terms by now and should have scored voidgrubs either one or both times. He should not prioritize clearing, but if there is a bit of down time, he can.
LATE GAME: Alistar should use the mid to late game to catch up on CS where he is lacking and never stop farming now that he can at a decent time. Hopefully his money has been gained properly from ganking and killing, but there should never be a point in the game where he stops trying to catch up on gold in comparison to the enemy jungler.
