Introduction

Void Fizz fanart by me :D

Hello everyone!I'm Peppermint and this is my first guide on MOBAFIRE. I do appreciate any feedback from you guys. Fizz had always been my best champion choice. He's powerful, he's really well designed and above all, he's a slippery fella, thanks to his Playful / Trickster.

In this guide, you'll be learning mainly on how to counter an enemy laner. I will be sharing my tricks and techniques to face off any opponent. Fizz is a fairly easy champion to play. And most people can pick up kills with him really easily. I'm gonna teach you how to be the rare Fizz players. The ones who can beat any other common Fizz players. So, let's begin!

The power of Fizz...

Pros / Cons

Pros

+ extreme burst damage
+ strong survivability
+ pisses people off when they fail to kill you
+ able to dodge all sorts of skills including the notorious Requiem
+ easy to learn
+ his ult swallows yordles
Fizz is one of the most powerful mid laners. Despite being a melee champ, he is able to out do all sorts of champions. His burst damage ensures the enemy doesn't have a chance to react and his Playful / Trickster can really turn the tides of any battles. Most people who play Fizz can easily get at least 10 kills in any match, whether losing or winning.
Cons
+ extremely vulnerable without Playful / Trickster
+ small mistakes will cause a losing match
+ very dependent on items
Fizz may be all mighty and OP and such, but he's still very squishy. Too much crowd control on the enemy team, and you wont have a chance to Playful / Trickster to safety. If you don't get your core items fast enough, you'll end up falling behind instead of dealing 'Tons of Damage'.

Runes

Runes

Precision
Fleet Footwork
Phase Rush

Greater Mark of Magic Penetration : Magic penetration is quite important for early levels as Fizz needs some extra boost of damage to poke on lane.
Greater Seal of Armor : Fizz being a really squishy champion especially at early levels need that lil boost of armor at the start.
Greater Glyph of Ability Power : Fizz just needs AP to deal massive damage. The more AP at early levels, the faster you pick up kills.
Greater Quintessence of Ability Power : More AP, more OP.

Spells

Flash is essential. Most people pick this summoner spell and if you want to kill that coward who just Flashed out of your range, you would wanna Flash in and catch him

Ignite works really well with your Seastone Trident. It also helps secure a kill and you could even perform a neat lil' stunt which I'd like to call the "Cool Guys Don't Look At Explosions" move. Where you throw your shark, dashed at them while applying Seastone Trident and igniting them, then walk away and let the shark / Ignite finish 'em off. Like a boss!!

Items

Item Sequence

Sorcerer's Shoes - Homeguard 1550
Lich Bane 3100
Zhonya's Hourglass 3250
Void Staff 3000
Rabadon's Deathcap 3600
Deathfire Grasp 3100

These boots are essential in order to deal significant damage at any point of the game.

Lich bane has recently been changed. But it still does it's job well. With the bonus damage from Lich Bane, Fizz's Urchin Strike and Seastone Trident can deal insane burst damage.

The effect that this item gives is rather similar to Playful / Trickster. One is already OP, so why not have both?

Deathcap is important if you want to see your enemies disappear in one strike. The 30% increase of AP is just too good to turn down.

Usually, I'd pickup Void Staff right after my Zhonya's Hourglass. Because most people tend to get some magic resist once they got a taste of your nasty damage. Some magic penetration would do the trick!

I love to finish off with this item cause it gives alot of AP. Your AP should be around 800+ if you have all the items i recommended. With these items, you're able to 1-hit the ADC effortlessly. And the Deathfire can amplify your damage output if necessary. Plus it has some cooldown reduction! Shorter Playful / Trickster cooldown!

There are many ways you may choose to build Fizz. But I highly recommend this itemset. You may choose to get Rylai's Crystal Scepter or Liandry's Torment for abit more HP and a lil extra effect from your skills (Rylai for the slow effect or Liandry for the damage over time)

This is your ultimate ability. So ranking it up whenever possible is a must.

Playful / Trickster is very important in any situation. You need this skill if you want to juke the hell outta your enemies. (Fun fact: You can Flash while in mid- Playful / Trickster to do a neat distance closing slam!)

This ability is quite useful. The dash sends you further back if you use it at a closer range to your target. This puts Fizz behind his enemies in most fights. So when they try to Flash away, if you dashed before they Flashed, you can still catch up to them.

Activate this right before you use Urchin Strike. This will apply a debuff much similar to the summoner spell, Ignite. It deals damage over time, it can shred their HP when they're low and it applies a health regen reduction for a few seconds. Combined with Lich Bane, this ability is deadly.

PLAYSTYLE

I wouldn't say that I'm one of the greatest Fizz players in the world, but I am very confident in my techniques of playing as him against ANY champion. In this section, I will be sharing my way of performing some nifty tricks. Some maybe risky and not advised (but totally worthwhile if you succeed) and some are probably common. Note that I have not played with EVERYONE in the world so I wouldn't know if anyone else had already been using the techniques I'm about to share.

LANING

Personally, I have a problem of farming minions. I'm pretty bad at last hitting them. And in some occasions, the enemy laner get 3 times the amount of minions killed than I do. Yes... It's that bad... But I make up for it with my constant killing!
Generally it isn't too difficult to last hit minions with Fizz due to his Seastone Trident which deals damage over time, allowing you to kill the minions most of the time even if you failed the last hit.

Apart from farming, when playing as Fizz I try to move around alot. The way I move depends on the enemy laner. For example, if I lane against a Lux, I tend to keep away from my distance and move diagonally towards Lux. This way, her Light Binding and Lucent Singularity won't be able to hit you. If I lane against a Kayle or a Nunu & Willump, I would always prepare my Playful / Trickster to dodge their Reckoning or Ice Blast since they have a projectile travel time. As for champions like Brand or Xerath or Gragas I use Urchin Strike to dodge AoEs like Pillar of Flame, Eye of Destruction or [[Barrel Roll]. Usually they would not be aware so you can dash to them and they'll miss. Basically, you gotta play around with your abilities and confuse your enemies.

When an enemy miss their skills, it is a good opportunity to poke them. Most importantly, when laning, ALWAYS save your Playful / Trickster. Ward your brush whenever possible to prevent any sudden ganks. It takes a while to fully master when to be aggressive and when not to be. You need to be instinctive and know your own capabilities as well as your enemies'.

(Forgot to save my Playful / Trickster.... I could have died if I took a little more damage...)

THE TRICKS

There are many tricks you can perform with Fizz thanks to the abilities he is granted. It is most wise to learn some cool tricks to get the best out of Fizz. Below are a few of my favorite tricks I'd love to perform in all my matches.

'The Replacement'
This is a trick you can use regularly. The Replacement trick is very simple to perform. All you have to do is use Playful / Trickster near an allied minion (or champion) to avoid the oncoming enemy on-hit ability such as Siphoning Strike or Decisive Strike. It's always good to make the enemy waste their abilities on minions whenever possible. This trick however has a downside. Playful / Trickster consumes alot of mana and it isn't really a good trade off if you're gonna use it to avoid Garen's Decisive Strike which has no cost. I suggest you use this trick to avoid a much more important ability such as Leona's Shield of Daybreak which can stun you and might prevent you from escaping or take too much damage. Overall, this trick requires you to know your enemies well and see when it is the right time to use it.

'Cool Guys Don't Look At Explosions'
This trick isn't recommended. The way to perform this is to burst the enemy down to a sliver of health left then throw your shark and Ignite the target. After that, immediately walk away and pretend the enemy champion didn't exist. If you do it right, the Shark and Ignite will finish him off and as a bonus, you give an insulting impression that you are able to kill them effortlessly. In my opinion, most people will get really pissed off at that stunt you just pulled. When this happens, they would try their best to kill you in the next encounter. If they are too focused on killing you, most people would tend to forget who they're messing with. And that gives you an advantage. Most people tend to screw up their combos or accidentally make a small mistake. These small mistakes can help you snowball on them to the point where you are overfed and not able to die anymore.

'The Bait'
This is a rather easy trick to perform. There are alot of greedy people out there. And believe me when I say so, there are ALOT! And this is good. Especially when you're health is low. This trick can be pulled off to get you back on your feet when you are losing out on lane. When the enemy laner had harrassed you too much (you will need at least your Q, W and E ready), Recall near your turret, near enough so that when the enemy laner were to attack you, he/she has to enter the turret's attack range. If the enemy laner is greedy and think that they could pick up an easy kill with maybe the help of their Ignite, they will try to go all out on you. When this happens, you need to time your Playful / Trickster nicely so they would not be able to touch you, while alerting your turret. The important thing is where to land back down after Playful / Trickster. Most of the time, I would land forward, placing the enemy between me and the turret. Right after I land, I would use Urchin Strike + Seastone Trident to dash into my turret, keeping me at a safe distance from their possible Ignite or any other skills which could kill you. If they aren't very tanky, or if they had already lost some health before that, your Playful / Trickster slow and your Seastone Trident combined with some turret attacks is enough to kill the enemy very quickly.

'Shark Bait'
I use this trick very frequently. And it works 90% of the time! Not a 100% though. These tricks are situational. Ever played Fizz and you're like.. owning the enemy team? Well if you do, then do you have the problem of trying to kill their ADC or support but they keep backing off too far for you to reach them? Well worry no more! This trick is perfect for that kind of situation. All you have to do is do some 'normal' thing like farming minions or standing idly and not do anything. The enemy laner would most likely try to auto attack you, or shoot a skill at you. After they do, move towards them (don't be afraid. you have Playful / Trickster if anything fails) and you will see them back off (cause they fear your insane damage). When that happens, immediately turn around and shoot your shark to your back, right at their face. When you turn away to retreat, 90% of the time, the enemy will try to run back to you to land an auto-attack. Why? I don't really know. Human nature I guess...
Your shark will hit them in the face, and BOOM they're caught. GET IN THERE AND DESTROY THEM!

'Fail ULTS'
Ever experienced a slight fear of a Mystic Shot or a Requiem on it's way to hit you? Well worry no more! I like to do this trick just to piss people off. Let's say you got an enemy who has a deadly global ult like Final Spark or Whirling Death or Requiem. When I'm bored, I'd like to do my team a favor. First, I walk up to a nearby enemy turret, then I get hit by it. Once my health is really low, I prepare myself for any enemy global ults. Requiem for example. I see it coming, then I hop!
Karthus : FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Fizz : LOL

WORK IN PROGRESS...

Hey guys, I hope you enjoyed this guide so far. As you can see, it is far from completion. But I' like to have some early feedback on how this guide is going so far since this is my first guide and I'd like it to be a helpful guide.

THE COUNTER LIST (incomplete)

"FISH FISH FISH!"

Most people believe that Fizz can be countered by some champions like Ryze or LeBlanc or maybe even Zyra. However, after years of experience with Fizz, I would disagree to that. Fizz is capable of laning or fighting against ALL champions, if you play your cards right...
The key to winning all types of champions isn't the champion themselves, but the Summoner.
YES. The Summoners. The players behind that champion.
This is what I will mainly focus on. It's not the item sets or the runes and masteries.
It's all about tricking the enemy laner and make them fail.

But it is of course easier said than done.
Below is a list of ALL the champions, including Fizz, and all the techniques to counter them on lane or anywhere else on the map. Note that this section isn't only to learn how you can deal with champions as Fizz, but you can use what I shared here and apply it to other champions to fight Fizz. You can also learn how Fizz would approach your certain champion and form a strategy against Fizz himself!
