Introduction

Hi everyone! My name is Luxeøn. I main Lux, and am a Diamond mid/support player.

Lux is such a unique and fun champion, and I'm about to show you why. In this guide, I will go in detail about Lux and how to really master her playstyle! I decided to make a guide for Lux because of my love for her. I have been playing her ever since season 3, so I wanted to share the knowledge I have collected from my experience from playing as her. This guide includes both a mid lane and a support section that I am still editing and will continue to update!!

Here we go!



Examples from my experience

Before we actually start, I know that sometimes when people read something, they might want to know both the validification of the information, and the person who wrote it as well. To hopefully soothe those, I screenshotted matches I played as Lux recently in ranked! I try to keep this updated but it's not as important- feel free to look me up on op.gg or anything if you need that validification. I am on the top Lux charts here and here. I also have almost 800k mastery points with her and she is the one who got me to diamond! She really does help me climb the ladder in ranked, even though she isn't one of the top picks in the mid lane.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
o She is easy to pick up!
o Vision from 2 abilities!
o HUGE ult range!
o AMAZING poke!
o Provides utility from her CC and shield!
o Pretty good Crowd Control!
o Great in teamfights!
o Fun to play!
o Funniest laugh!
o Adorable skins!



Cons:
x Hard to master due to skillshots and positioning
x She's squishy
x Long cooldowns (besides her ultimate)
x High Mana Costs
x No escape besides her CC/flash
x Easily countered by Assassins
x She has some really HARD counters



Sorcery Rune

Sorcery is actually my #1 choice and the choice I recommend for this guide!

Keystone:

ARCANE COMET

Arcane Comet
Comet works best with Lux due to how much damage it can rack up and the the low cooldown. When they're binded, the comet has a 100% chance of hitting, too!!

SUMMON AERY

Summon Aery
This is still a good keystone and I actually do pick it if I feel I can poke a lot (or they're melee since your autos can proc it a lot). Comet is definitely better for more damage and poke but this is still not bad if you preference this over comet since comet isn't 100% hitproof.

PHASE RUSH

Phase Rush
This is like the old Stormraider's, so I really don't recommend it at all. Lux needs the damage and the movement speed won't do her much good anyhow.




Artifact:

MANAFLOW BAND

Manaflow Band
Lux has high mana costs in general, so this rune can really help out. It gives 250 mana after fully stacking it and then gives lux 1% of her missing mana every 5s, which can be incredible in extended fights. This really helps when you do the Luden's build because without blue or getting mana from kills with your Presence of Mind, you will run out of mana rather quickly. If you get Seraphs, this will give you 7.5 extra AP which can be nice!!

THE ULTIMATE HAT

The Ultimate Hat
Hat is the second best option here, but for certain circumstances I don't recommend it as the main rune bc Lux has PoM and her ultimate CD refresh, so taking this might be overkill too just because it will only reduce your ultimate by a couple seconds. HOWEVER, do take this rune if you aren't taking presence of mind because you want that CDR for your ultimate.

NULLIFYING ORB

Nullifying Orb
This is a subpar rune but if you feel you are going to have a really hard lane and don't need manaflow band, feel free to take this. It's not recommended just because the other two runes are just so powerful but if you want you can still take this.




Excellence:


TRANSCENDENCE

Transcendence
This rune is amazing because any CDR you go over turns into AP and it really helps if Lux doesn't get a lot of CDR in her build. CDR is pretty important for Lux so this boosts her damage and poke potential. I almost always recommend this.

CELERITY

Celerity
This rune will have some good synergy with the AP items that give movement speed, making this a pretty valuable rune. Even if you don't buy MS though, Lux is immobile so this can really help her movement (386MS vs 375 from tier 2 boots). This is just as valuable as transcendence so feel free to take this instead if you prefer.

ABSOLUTE FOCUS

Absolute Focus
My personal opinion on this is that you need to be above 70% or else it is useless, while the other two runes are guaranteed the whole game, aka why I don't recommend this. However, Lux does stay far back and the AP does help so feel free to take this if you prefer. I just think CDR or MS is way more important than some unreliable AP.




Power:


GATHERING STORM

Gathering Storm
I take this one over scorch because scorch is only good for early game and Gathering Storm becomes more and more efficient the longer the game goes. However, if you want early lane pressure, feel free to take scorch instead.

SCORCH

Scorch
This is good for poke in lane and if you want to try to poke the enemy laner out of lane.

WATERWALKING

Waterwalking
Even if you are roaming, it doesn't exactly do enough to be worth it. Save this for junglers.



Secondary Runes
There's a couple options for which runes you choose. Precision is definitely what you want to be taking due to presence of mind, but feel free to take inspiration or domination if preferred (although domination is not really recommended but still listed since runes can still be preferenced based). Precision does give a little attack speed but I personally love it because it helps so much when you need to E>auto those minions fast before they die to other minions or when you're using a rotation of spells that involve procing your passive.




Precision (14 adaptive AP, 5.5%AS):

PRESENCE OF MIND

Presence of Mind
This is the primary reason you should take precision because the mana works like the old morellos passive and REALLY helps Lux and her mana sustain in fights. The CD on your ultimate will also work SO well with Lux's already refreshed CD on her ult.

COUP DE GRACE

Coup de Grace
Take this to paid with PoM because your combo will do more damage and this will ensure they are dead!! Really helpful when you're ulting like 3 people in teamfights lol

CUT DOWN

Cut Down
This can be the replacement for Coup de Grace if you're vs tanks. Lux struggles vs tanks in general so having this available is really quite nice if needed.




Inspiration (20AP, adaptive):


MINION DEMATERIALIZER

Minion Dematerializer
This and/or stopwatch should be the only reason you are taking inspiration instead of precision. Either if you are running Seraphs build and want the earlier waveclear or you can't get Rabadon's after your mana item because you need to, say, get a Zhonyas for that Zed. This will ensure your waveclear stays afloat and can really help out with pushing your lane earlier on!

COSMIC INSIGHT

Cosmic Insight
Lux can always work with cooldown reduction, making this a pretty good rune to go with your minion dematerializer/perfect timing rune. If you are taking perfect timing, Biscuit Delivery is also an acceptable rune to take if you want the sustain in lane!

PERFECT TIMING

Perfect Timing
This item did get nerfed to 10 minutes, but it's still very valuable in certain situations. For one, it's really helpful 10 minutes in when you might roam or the enemy might try to tower dive you with their jungler. However, the most important part and the sole reason why you take this rune is because it makes Zhonya's 300g cheaper, meaning you can get it faster vs that pesky Zed or other champ, and for two, it makes your Zhonya's cooldown 15% less, which can be incredible for teamfights. Only take this if you need it!




Domination (20AP, adaptive):


CHEAP SHOT

Cheap Shot
I recommend this if you're going to take the domination tree because your bind and slow will proc this. It has a short 4s cooldown, meaning every E you throw out will have true damage attached to it, plus it works well with Scorch if you take it. The only negative about this is if you immediately pop E, it won't proc, so try to have your E up for a second before popping this if you want the extra damage

EYEBALL COLLECTION

Eyeball Collection
Take this second, as it gives you up to an extra 30AP! Read to the right to why zombie ward isn't as good as eyeball collection.

ZOMBIE WARD

Zombie Ward
This can be good because when your wards expire, a ward similar to the blue trinket will stay there for an extra 180s. This can be a good way to put wards in different places you think the jungler might gank you at, and then have that zombie ward save you. Unfortunately, it won't really be used unless you buy control wards bc you will have the blue trinket by level 9 and not the yellow or red. You don't buy a red trinket either, meaning you won't be clearing out wards either. It still works with control wards but when the enemy team kills the control ward, they will kill the zombie ward a long with it anyways, making this rune not as useful.




Domination Rune

Here is the rune path if you choose Domination as your main rune type! I recommend Sorcery over Domination due to Sorcery having better options for Lux, but Domination is good for bursting a single target down- which Lux can do well with her combo.


Keystone:


ELECTROCUTE

Electrocute
This rune is the sole reason you take domination. It works a lot like Thunderlords, but sadly, you cant use your E>auto or Q>R to proc it anymore, plus the cooldown is pretty long compared to comet. This is why I do not suggest domination as the main rune choice. However, electrocute does a LOT of damage and can really add an oomph to your burst.

PREDATOR

Predator
This also has a HUGE cooldown and is not recommended, as it doesn't do too much for Lux.

DARK HARVEST

Dark Harvest
Another rune that isn't recommended, as it requires an auto attack and takes time to stack up.




Malice:


CHEAP SHOT

Cheap Shot
This rune actually works well with Lux, as she has both a slow and a bind. Plus, the cooldown is 4s! Just remember that you have to let your E slow first before popping it in order for cheap shot to proc.

TASTE OF BLOOD

Taste of Blood
This can help if you need a little more sustain, but I prefer the damage from cheap shot because the rune below called Ravenous Hunter will give you a little sustain!

SUDDEN IMPACT

Sudden Impact
Not recommended because Lux doesn't have a leap/dash/etc. It does work with flash, but flash has a long cooldown, making this rune pretty useless.




Tracking:


EYEBALL COLLECTION

Eyeball Collection
This rune gives you up to 30AP from kills/assists/ward kills, making this the best option.

ZOMBIE WARD

Zombie Ward
This can be good because when your wards expire, a ward similar to the blue trinket will stay there for an extra 180s. GHOST PORO

Ghost Poro
This is an adorable rune, but really underwhelming. It requires you to sit in a bush in order for it to work and can easily be countered.




Hunter:


RAVENOUS HUNTER

Ravenous Hunter
The other two runes are underwhelming, so this is the best to take for some sustain. Remember, the healing is reduced by 1/3 since Lux's spells are AOE.

RELENTLESS HUNTER

Relentless Hunter
The out of combat movement speed can be good in certain situations, but is not recommended and is very underwhelming since it doesn't do much for Lux.

INGENIOUS HUNTER

Ingenious Hunter
The only active item Lux buys is maybe a Zhonya's Hourglass, but even then, that doesn't make this rune worth it.




Secondary Runes
There's a couple options for which runes you choose! Due to taking electrocute, the whole 'kill one target' idea makes precision really good. However, sorcery is still a good pick as well and inspiration is there if you need it. I will explain below.


Precision (14 adaptive AP, 5.5%AS):

Sorcery: (20AP Adaptive)


TRANSCENDENCE

Transcendence
Transcendence can be really important since Lux needs CDR and this gives her free 10%. I usually always take this rune if running Sorcery.

GATHERING STORM

Gathering Storm
Gathering storm is a really good secondary because it scales with you! It gets better and better every 10 minutes, which is great since Lux's late game may not be as good as other champs so this really helps. More AP= more damage and a bigger shield!!

manaflow band

Manaflow Band
I would honestly recommend getting PoM over this, but if you are running Sorcery and need mana, this can really help Lux out.



Summoner Spells

Barrier
This is the most important and most used spell I take. It has a relatively low cooldown and can save you from just about anything! It also mixes very well with your Prismatic Barrier! Lux NEEDS this shield sometimes versus assassins or bursty comps to save her.

Flash
This is the other important spell that YOU SHOULD TAKE 100% OF THE TIME!! If you need to take another summoner spell, replace barrier. Flash gives you so many opportunities to either escape, catch up to a champion, dodge spells, and more.

Cleanse
Cleanse is situational, but still VERY important. First, look at their mid laner or team. Take this spell if you are worried about certain spells like Event Horizon from Veigar, a Petrifying Gaze from Cassiopeia, a Chain of Corruption from Varus, Enchanted Crystal Arrow from Ashe, and so forth. Next, look at the jungler. I always take cleanse on junglers such as Sejuani or Elise, and it's even more important if both the mid laner AND the jungler have a lot of CC.

Exhaust
Exhaust is a good spell versus assassins, like LeBlanc, Talon, Zed, and so forth. Using this spell right before their combo is extremely important, so try to time it correctly!

Teleport
This really helps you stay in lane, gank other lanes, or be present during fights over objectives. This can be especially important when laning against, say, a Taliyah or Twisted Fate. With their ults, they are able to gank bot or top lane EASILY. Following them will only help out your team- and may score you kills as well :)

Heal
I really like heal because there are a lot of cases where you and your jungler are 2v2'ing with the other mid laner and jungler (this is way more common in higher elo than low), so heal means better luck, plus the MS helps a lot. HOWEVER, if they have Ignite in mid lane or they have some type of grevious wounds (Katarina's Death Lotus, Varus's Hail of Arrows), DO NOT TAKE HEAL because your heal will be reduced by 40% unless you heal BEFORE this is applied.

Ghost
I love this summoner spell. It's truly an amazing item for kiting, chasing, running away, getting to objectives, and so forth. However, it takes time to ramp up and is good if you need consistent movement for chasing/kiting, which is not what Lux needs. I do not suggest this summoner spell but if you feel like you need the consistent movement, go for it.

Ignite
Ignite helps finish an enemy off, although I don't commonly take it because I shouldn't be in range to ignite someone frequently- especially since I can use my combo from further away. I actually don't recommend this summoner spell at all because it can teach you to constantly get close and if someone knows what they're doing, they can use that against you and you won't survive because Lux is way too squishy. However, it does wonders if you are ever against a Vladimir or someone with insane healing. It also can help with lane pressure, if you would like.

Smite
Don't take this ever. This is important- I have seen people who take this on Lux and I ask them why. I know it's been known by some pros in the past to take smite and get the old runeglaive, but Enchantment: Runic Echoes is a dulled version if Luden's Echo and you won't be farming jungle monsters anyways. Take a more useful summoner spell.


Lux's Abilities and When to Level Them

First, let's look at what Lux actually does:

Illumination
Enhances your next auto attack on those who were hit by your other damaging abilities. Lux's offensive abilities mark all affected enemies with light energy for 6 seconds. Her basic attacks and Final Spark consume the mark, dealing 20-190 (based on level).

Light Binding
Roots and damages two enemy champions.
ACTIVE: Lux releases a sphere of light in a line that deals magic damage to the first two enemies hit and roots them for 2 seconds.

Prismatic Barrier
Shields yourself and your allies with Lux's wand.
ACTIVE: Lux shields herself and throws out her wand in a line, shielding allied champions in its path for 3 seconds. Lux's wand then returns to her, stacking the shield to all allied champions it passes through and herself. If Lux shields at least one other ally on the outgoing path, the returning wand will grant twice as much shield.

Lucent Singularity
Slows and damages enemies in an AOE bubble.
ACTIVE: Lux sends an anomaly of twisted light to the target area, Slow icon slowing nearby enemies and granting Sight icon sight of the area around it for up to 5 seconds.
SLOW: 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45%
At the end of the duration or if Lucent Singularity is activated again, the singularity detonates, dealing magic damage to all enemies in the area.

Final Spark
Lux fires a laser that deals damage to anything in her path.
ACTIVE: After gathering energy for 0.5 seconds, Lux fires a giant laser in a line that deals magic damage to all enemies hit and briefly reveals them and the surrounding area.
PASSIVE: If Final Spark kills at least one enemy champion, or hits an enemy champion that dies within 1.75 seconds, a percentage of its remaining cooldown is refunded by 30/40/50%.


Tips and Tricks

First off, lets talk about what to level first. Here is a chart that explains it:

Now, let us get onto the abilities!


Illumination
Tips and Tricks
  • This will be a great way to poke in lane. Using your Lucent Singularity and an auto will set this off.
  • ONLY auto when it is safe. Never run at enemy champions trying to proc this.
  • Remember that your ultimate procs Illumination AND resets it!


Light Binding
Tips and Tricks
  • Try to hit two people with your light binding!
  • Remember that it hits two people, so hitting a minion and an enemy champion is possible.
  • Don't just throw this spell out, as your are very vulnerable without it. Level this after you finish leveling Lucent Singularity.
  • The only time I get this at level 1 is if I know we are going to invade. Even then, I wait until some action happens before leveling it. If I level it when I first start and the invade fails, I will have to accept that I will have Q at level 1 instead of E.


Prismatic Barrier
Tips and Tricks
  • Try to hit all of your allies with this spell in teamfights. If you don't hit them on the way out, try to position yourself to hit them with your wand on the way back. With the new buffs, hitting them on the way out gives a bigger shield!!
  • I level this at level 3 instead of 4 on certain occasions- with poke or burst champions, such as LeBlanc or Xerath. The shield will absorb some of the damage, and you will be able to have a better trade.
  • Always get 1 point in this at level 4, with no exceptions. It was nerfed but it still can protect you from dying/taking too much damage.


Lucent Singularity
Tips and Tricks
  • This is your main farming and poking tool. Level it up first.
  • Make sure to hit as many enemy champions with this. Also remember that it slows, so you do not have to immediately pop it.
  • It has a high mana cost, so try not to spam it early game.
  • It gives vision, so using it in bushes is way better then facechecking.


Final Spark
Tips and Tricks
  • Try to position yourself in teamfights to hit as many enemy champions as you can with this ability.
  • It has a low cooldown, so don't be afraid to use it!
  • This is my favorite ability because of the sniping potential it has. I have killed many people and stolen buffs/dragon/baron with this ability!
  • With the 8.7 patch, Lux's cooldown will now be refunded if you used your R and they die 0-1.75 seconds later. This means you can use your ultimate from far away to assist people in getting the kill and you still get the ultimate refund!!


Combos

I made a couple videos to show how Lux's combos work!:


Light Binding Flash

-I have forgotten to add this combo to my guide for quite a while, but here it is! As you can see in this video, I did two test runs, one with throwing out my Q and then flashing, and the other flashing and then using Q. Looking at my first run, the goal here is to see that pressing Q first and THEN flashing is more ideal because it is faster and it gives the enemy less time to react. You want to Q first because Lux takes a second before throwing out her Q, so you want to start up the animation and then flash. When you flash IMMEDIATELY after, the game will take the range indicator as where you FLASHED at, not where you were when you first pressed Q, and that is how I was able to get in range by using flash. I added the second run in order to show you that flashing and then pressing Q is still possible in order to get in range, but it gives the enemy much more time to react, so we want to Q first if possible before flashing. Do note that you need to flash IMMEDIATELY after pressing Q- if you wait too long then it will not register your flash in time and the Q range will go from where you were when you pressed Q, not where your flashed position was. I recommend practicing this in the practice tool in order to get familiar with how the combo works before using it in games, but it's an insanely FUN and useful combo!! The Q>flash double bind and then following up with E and R and getting a double kill feels reaaaaallly nice!!


Lucent Singularity➛ Auto

-This is a common harass technique used in lane, but is also going to be used out of lane as well.


Light Binding➛Auto➛ Lucent Singularity➛Auto

-This is going to be another combo that will be used for trades. Also notice how my Light Binding killed a minion, but was still able to hit Annie as well. As most won't pay attention to the second binding until it is too late, using your Light Binding to kill one minion and hit the enemy champion with the second binding works effectively!!
Note:WATCH OUT WHO YOU USE THIS ON! As Annie didn't have her ultimate and her range is very short, she was only able to get an auto off on me. If you are using this combo on someone like Ahri, BE WEARY! Your Light Binding is only a root, meaning spells can still be cast. It will not be worth it if Ahri is able to Charm you and use her combo back on you!


Light Binding Lucent Singularity Final Spark

-This clearly shows the standard way of bursting an enemy down. Annie had about 75% of her health, and yet I was able to line up my combo just by hitting my Light Binding and following up with my other spells.


Light Binding➛DO NOT AUTO➛ Lucent Singularity

-This video is now the updated one, yay! As promised from the comment section of my guide, here is a redone version of this combo. I fixed the idea that the edge of Lux's E should be thrown at the edge of Annie's feet, like shown above. This makes it to where Annie would have to walk through the whole circle to even get to me, and by then, I have escaped because she is constantly slowed. Notice how I popped my E right when she was about to run off of it. This made the spell 100% effective. Not only did I have the slow to escape, but I popped it right before she ran off of it so the damage went off as well. If I had mana, I could have ulted her and maybe killed her as well :p You can use this when you are getting chased.


Lucent Singularity Final Spark

-I normally only use this combo under tower, but it is also a very effective combo in places like dragon and baron. The trick is to throw out your E very quickly and pop it, and then use your ultimate. Not only will you do tons of AOE damage to multiple targets (or delete one target like I did with Annie) but remember that your ultimate procs your passive! Popping your E before the ultimate fully channels will give you your maximum damage!

Starting Items

x2
Doran's Ring + 2 Pots
This is the best way to start out. Doran's Ring gives you ability power, health, mana everytime a unit is killed, and base mana regen. This plus the two health pots should be enough sustain for you to get to level 6.


The Dark Seal + Refillable Potion
This isn't a bad alternative start if you feel you will need the pots passive. Works well with Time Warp Tonic!


First Back

It's hard to explain what exactly to buy because every situation is different and you'll always have a different amount of gold on your first back each game, but here are some ideas of what to buy and when.

1100G Buying a lost chapter is definitely the goal here, whether you choose Seraphs or Luden's. The CDR and mana back per level is just way too good to skip out on! You will need ~35 minions to get enough gold for this item.
750G If you're going for Seraphs and either it is a farming and stacking game so you can get away with this, or you were forced to go back with less than 1100 gold, this is a suitable option!
350G Sometimes you might get an early gank or the laner pushes you out of lane and you don't have enough gold for a Lost Chapter, or even a tear in this case. Instead of buying another Doran's ring or buying parts of the lost chapter, this item is better. I even buy a Refillable Potion with this item for the sustain in lane. Even if you don't get Mejai's Soulstealer, this item gives REALLY good stats for how cheap it is and is sold for a good price. I get this item in quite a bit of my games.
450G Vs certain matchups (ex: Syndra or LB), you might need to get some early magic resist. You can buy this either by itself or with other items (this + dark seal + refillable for 950G is a great buy if you have the gold) and it should help out a lot. You can later on upgrade it to a Banshee's Veil/ Mercury's Treads or sell it if it comes to that point.
300G Movement speed can be important in certain matchups, so this can be a really good buy. Depending on how much gold you have, you can buy above items with the boots of speed!
150G I cannot fathom how important some type of sustain is. I personally always buy a refillable bc paired with The Dark Seal, I pay 150G and get ~313 health per fill up with dark seal add 20% from Time Warp Tonic and that's 375 health per fillup!!. I've also had it where a fight starts and the health saved me from the last tick of an ignite or a spell! If you don't buy a refillable, at least have one health pot with you and if you find yourself buying a lot of health pots in games, remember that the refillable is a more cost effective buy!
75G Last but not least, if you can, ALWAYS try to buy a control ward on your first back/every time you back -if possible. Vision is extremely important and having a control ward means one less place the jungler can gank you from + it gives your team better vision control of the map since control wards are limited to 1 per person!


Sample Builds

*Please remember that these example builds do NOT have to be the exact order you build them and rely on how each SPECIFIC game is going. I also have section below this on detail about each item and when it can be good to buy it. I know a lot of this is preference and these are examples so do what you think is best (ex: I might put Luden's in a slot but that doesn't mean you can't just switch out Luden's for Seraph's and so forth)*




Personal Fav Build
Pros: Really good burst potential, 40% at full build w trans, lots of snowball potential, waveclear assistance with Luden's proc
Cons: No defensive item until maybe last or second to last item, can be mana hungry with no blue or Presence of Mind refund.

When do I use this build? This build is really good in quite a lot of situations. Always rush Luden's first as it gives you the 20%CDR you want the proc will really help Lux a lot when clearing minions. As for boots, Sorc boots is always standard but feel free to get Merc treads if needed. Next, I rush Rabadon's, that way minions will have no chance at surviving, and neither will champions! After, I put Morellos here but make sure to get Void Staff if you need it by this point. Also feel free to substitute the Zhonya's for, say, a Banshee's and so forth.







VS Healing Enemies
Pros: High damage, early mpen meaning 'true' damage unless they get MR
Cons: Low movement speed, CDR later on

When do I use this build? The point of this build is to get Morellonomicon fast if you are versus a healing laner like Vladimir or Swain. This will cut their healing down with every spell you use on them for four seconds and will ensure you can kill them. I usually just rush lost chapter and then hold it until I get my Morellos and then upgrade to my mana item. Like any other build, feel free to get items at different times or swap out items for other items depending on the specific game!







Early Defensive Item
Pros: Early defensive item for survivability, early CDR
Cons: Low movement speed, not as much damage until later on

When do I use this build? This build is really good when they have a really big AD threat (Zed especially), or even AP threat (which you would swap out Zhonya's for Banshee's Veil). This build I only recommend IF there is a huge threat who is constantly aiming for you, otherwise you should try to build damage. You will want to sit on lost chapter and rush that defensive item as fast as you can! After, you may upgrade to your mana item.








Movement Speed Lux
Pros: More MS which can really help an immobile mage like Lux out, high burst potential.
Cons: Low CDR (only 20% from Ludens), no defensive item

When do I use this build? Sometimes just getting MS rather than a defensive item CAN be a good defense. Unfortunately spellbinder is an eh item, which I will explain more below, but movement speed is insanely underrated, so feel free to use this build instead if you feel the MS will help/need the MS to escape from gap closers or other scary teams. Do remember that there is no defensive item in this and that you will be relying on if you take Transcendence and blue buff for that 40%CDR.




All Item Choices

Above were just examples of builds (since there are so many possibilities now), but this section will cover what are good items and WHEN you can buy them and why.


Sorcerer's Shoes: Let us start off with boots. These boots are the boots you will be buying in most of your games due to how strong 18 magic penetration can be. Buying this and Oblivion Orb or even Morellonomicon means you will be doing almost 'true' damage to anyone who doesn't buy magic resist!!


Mercury's Treads: The main goal of these boots are just replacing Sorcerer's Shoes if they have a lot of CC and you need the tenacity. These are very situational however, so make sure to take them only when necessary.


Seraph's Embrace: Next up is mana items! GLP isn't very good so I wouldn't recommend it, but the big argument here is between Seraph's and Ludens. Seraph's can be good due to Lux having quite a bit of mana issues and the shield is really nice to have during teamfights, but unfortunately, it doesn't fit Lux well anymore with the nerfs. You don't get the 3% mana until fully stacked and Lux takes a bit longer to stack this then other mages do, making is subpar on her- especially since Lux shines mid game/during teamfights. This item can be good if you're going to farm all game and try to scale, but otherwise, take Luden's instead. However, I always recommend getting Rabadon's Deathcap ASAP when taking Seraph's because I still recommend minion dematerializer in my rune section but I just really prefer to take precision instead of inspiration, and you need the AP for your E to kill the backline. Having Rabadon's second or third item lets you E the caster minions without having to rely on Luden's proc or minion dematerializer!! However, the downfalls to this is that your waveclear will be a lackluster for a bit longer and your burst won't be nearly as good as Luden's early-mid game.


Luden's Echo: Luden's is definitely preferred and is better in most cases. The main reason TO buy this over Seraph's is because it really helps Lux with her waveclear, which can be extremely important. It also can help with snowballing and adds a little bit more burst to your combo with the Ludens proc! Luden's can also be a lot more helpful if you need to rush another item or two fast (ex: Morellonomicon for healing comps) and then it's 15-20 minutes into the game and it's way too late to finish and stack tear. OR this can be good if your team is wanting to dominate and end quickly. There are a lot of reason why this item can be really good. The downfalls to this item are that you don't get the huge Seraph's shield which can really save your life in some points in the game, and you also MIGHT have mana issues if you are spamming, but usually with the new manaflow band and getting the mana back from takedowns from your Presence of Mind keeps Lux in the clear for mana, as well as hopefully blue buff!


Rabadon's Deathcap: This is Lux's bread and butter item due to the fact that she has high AP ratios! I try to rush this ASAP, which we used to not do, but now that it's cheaper and gives 40% more AP, it can be a really good item to snowball off of!! Once you get this item, your spells will be a lot stronger. As I stated above, I like to rush this item as a second item bc if I take Seraph's, getting this second will maximize both my damage and my waveclear! If Ludens, it just makes lux REALLY snowball-y, which is what we want since Lux shines mid game. It's also only a couple more hundred gold than other AP items and gives way better, so I would really recommend this item ASAP!!


Morellonomicon: Lux works really well with Magic Pen, making this a really important item. Lux also struggles against people who can heal up (Vlad, Swain) or when you burst someone down but then the Nami or Soraka heal saves them and they have barely any health left! This is both really important vs champs that can heal themselves or teammates and I would rush this ASAP vs those Vlad or Swain matchups. However, if not, get this later on for the magic penetration and I actually would always recommend this in your build if possible because people have heals, ADC's and top laners can lifesteal, junglers can smite for health- there's a lot of healing in the game that you can cut down on with your spells and giving this item 15 magic pen makes Lux want it even more! If you would like, you can get Oblivion Orb for the magic pen and then sit on it until later!


Spellbinder: This is a very hit or miss kind of rune for Lux. The stats work well with Lux since Lux needs a lot of AP and movement speed is always great on her due to her being so immobile and easy prey. However, the active isn't maximized by Lux like it can with other champions, aka why I don't have it in my regular builds. Lux takes too long by herself to stack the active up and she actually relies on other allies and enemies to use their spells. Another downfall to this active is that Lux should be one shotting squishies and others anyways, so the extra burst you want from this may just go to waste because you would have killed them anyways, even without this active. I also am unsure about it because you would want to sit in a teamfight in order to get your stacks before using the active so it gets it stacks up, but Lux is a champion that should be trying to look for picks BEFORE a teamfight so you can hopefully make it a 4v5. HOWEVER, this active can be really good if you need to run away fast, or if you need some movement speed to get in range for a Q for your team and so forth. If you like this item, it's definitely a good item with good stats, so go for it!


Twin Shadows: This item can be really good if your team relies on catching people out of position and you want that slow to make SURE they're caught out and can't escape. Normally supports buy this so I don't have to worry about it, but it's not too bad of an item if you want. The CDR and movement speed always benefit Lux. NOTE THAT THIS ITEM IS VERY GOOD vs stealthed champs like Eve or Twitch and also assassins like Talon as well!!


Zhonya's Hourglass: This item is essential vs champions like Zed because you can negate his ultimate with the active. It's also a really good item because if the Camille or other AD with a gap closer tries to jump on you, you can Zhonya's and you team will back you up. This item ALSO is good if you need the statis for an ultimate, like Karthus. This item is also really good if you're against a full AD team and need armor. This isn't in my core build since Lux is best when she has all damage items and stays back and throws her spells, BUT this item is CRUCIAL if you need the survivability!


Banshee's Veil: This item can be important for either ult/CC purposes (Ashe arrow, Sej ult, Blitz's flash/hook)- but I usually take cleanse for those), OR if they have a heavy magic damage team and you need the MR. This item isn't bought frequently but can be important if you need that survivability.


Mejai's Soulstealer: Lux is one of the few people that can buy this item and get away with it. It is a very high risk high reward item and should be bought early game and sold for you last item. I get it in some of my games where I need damage and want to snowball off of 1400 gold. However, when you snowball, you get a ton of gold so sometimes it's just way better to buy that Rabadon's Deathcap or get Spellbinder to pop off instead. The MS from this is also nice but Spellbinder gives that permanently instead of requiring 15+ stacks so I don't recommend this item AS much as I used to before.

Laning Phase

During the laning phase, there are 4 key steps to successfully working your lane:



1. Farming
I can not emphasize how IMPORTANT farming is. The early farming stage is the most important part for how well you will do later on in the game. Killing minions grants gold and XP. Gold grants items to further your damage, and XP gives you an advantage to your spells having better base stats/lower cooldowns. Please do not try to just attack the enemy champion, focus on last hitting while poking when given the chance.



How to last hit?
The basic idea is to wait until you are able to kill the minion with an auto attack. However, this is harder than it seems. For me, farming is one of my biggest downfalls. I get so caught up in the wave pressure and health of the enemy champion that I don't last hit and miss the necessary gold needed.



Should I farm with my spells? (Pros/Cons)
Pro: You will be able to use your spells to kill minions more easy, rather than waiting for the right moment to auto and possibly missing it.
Con: You will push the lane and it can be dangerous. You are more susceptible to either be ganked by the jungler or harassed by the mid laner.
Pro: Your opponent will lose farm due to the fact that he/she has to now auto and use their spells in order to hit the minions under the tower.
Con: Using your spells chunks out a lot of mana for Lux, especially early game when she doesn't have very many items. With no mana, you can't 'farm' more, nor can you poke the enemy champion and trade.
Pro: You could gain a huge advantage by keeping both the zoning of your lane and the ability to roam, meanwhile, your opponent is stuck at their turret trying to farm.
Con: You could actually end up missing on tons of CS yourself. With relying on spells to kill minions, you will be casting your spells instead of autoing. With spell casting, it will also create an unbalance in the wave, causing less CS for you- which then puts you behind.



Conclusion?
There is nothing wrong with using your spells to farm- especially under your OWN tower. However, try to keep the minion wave as balanced as possible by either only autoing when necessary, or using spells when you are getting pushed. Remember that your main farming tool besides autoing is your Lucent Singularity, which is also used for poking. Also remember that this spell has a high mana cost and a long cooldown, hence why spamming it is not a good idea. However, using it every once in a while to farm or poke is ideal. Farm as much as possible in order to have a better mid/late game.
If you are like me and have a hard time farming, make a custom game and practice last hitting with no items. This will really help for when you get into a game that actually matters.




2. Zoning/Harassing/Trading
This is another very important aspect during the laning phase. With zoning and harassing, you are causing your enemy to be both miss CS and be scared to go in for CS. Depending on who you are against will determine how this can be done.



When you are against melee opponents
This can be a favorable matchup due to the fact that the opponent has to get in melee range to auto you/the minion for CS. In the beginning of the game, try to auto them as much as you can in order for CS to be denied. The key concept here is to try to freeze the lane to deny CS and put them behind. However, with autoing comes some challenges.
1. Some melee champions have abilities they can use on you. Watch out for those. Their ability will do much more damage than your one auto.
2. When you auto the champion, it can cause the enemy's minions to target you. The minions do little damage, but it adds up so be careful.
3. Remember to auto when given the chance only. One auto is not worth missing CS



When to use your abilities in lane
The first and easiest answer to this is when you see your minion wave being pushed. The downside to Lux is that when she is pushed to the turret, most of the time she will have to use her spells to kill the creeps. With this then results in mana issues, loss of XP/gold, and not to mention- her cooldowns are pretty long. TRY NOT to get pushed to your tower. If your opponent is pushing, the best way to handle this is by aiming your Lucent Singularity at both the wave of creeps AND the enemy champion. This will not only keep the wave more balanced, but your opponent will take damage and will be more fearful to either push the lane or auto the creeps. It's even better when you are able to use your Lucent Singularity and then auto the champion, however, DO NOT CHASE THE CHAMPION JUST TO GET THE AUTO OFF. It is not worth it and you will end up taking more damage in the long run from both whatever the champion throws out at you, and the minions. Not to mention, it puts you in the perfect position for the enemy jungler to gank.



3. Jungle Camps
Jungle camps are always a good idea because killing them grants gold and XP. However, there are appropriate times to take the camps. Lux is slower than other champions in taking these camps, but it it always a good idea to try to take these when possible



What camps should I take?
Most of the time, I take the crimson raptor, along with the other raptors. These are very close to lane and you wont lose out on anything. The idea is to E all the raptors but don't pop your E until it pops on it's own, auto the big raptor, and then shield yourself. When your E is up again, it will kill all the small raptors, and hopefully the big raptor as well. You may need to auto the big raptor a couple more times or use your Q if you don't have enough damage to kill it with this rotation of spells. I just like to only use E, W, E because it uses a little less mana (unless you have blue, then spam your spells :P). However, you also could get to a point in the game where your first E kills all the little raptors, so in that case, E>auto the big raptor>Q>auto a couple times and the big raptor should die. Taking the wolves is also acceptable. I do the same rotation, but might add a Q in there because the big wolf is pretty tanky. If you have the opportunity, even taking the the enemy's jungle camps works in favor for you.



When should I take these camps?
1. When your lane is pushed far and you are able to take these raptors and return to lane in time.
2. I normally try to take a camp before I go back to base if I have enough mana/health. It gives me a little more gold before buying items.
3. WHEN THE JUNGLER SAYS ITS OKAY TO DO SO. PLEASE NEVER TAKE THE CAMPS IF YOUR JUNGLER DOES NOT GIVE YOU PERMISSION/(S)HE IS CLOSE TO THE CAMPS. If he is helping bot lane, you may take them because their respawn time is short, but remember that the camps are the junglers farm. You wouldn't want someone coming into your lane and taking all your farm.



4. Roaming
Because you are in the middle of the map, roaming is always an option. I normally wait until I have my Final Spark to start roaming, but if your teammates need help, roaming early has its benefits. The point in roaming is to help other lanes score kills and help your team get ahead. Remember that because you are a solo lane, you will hit level 6 faster than the bottom lane. You can use this to your teams advantage. Also watch how much you are roaming. I have seen too many people roam consistently and get nothing out of it, so they miss out on a ton of XP and gold from their own lane.



When do I roam?
1. The best time to roam is if you look at these things: There are no jungle camps to take, the enemy bottom lane is pushing, and you have your own lane pushed. If your lane is being pushed, never wander.
2. When the enemy mid laner is missing. Unless they are low on health or out of mana, they are normally taking a jungle camp or roaming. Remember to ALWAYS call MIA when your opponent isn't in lane.
3. Your bot lane is about to start a fight and you want to be there to help win it.


Note: Sometimes it is better to push your lane when the enemy opponent roams. Lux is a very immobile champion, so by the time Lux gets to the lane, the fight will be over. You will be wasting your time and will lose out on that XP/gold. Instead, push your lane and hit the enemy turret as much as you can- and maybe you can get the first turret gold. The other advantage to this is that you will be getting all of the gold and XP from staying in lane, meanwhile, your opponent will lose a wave or two of minions due to your strong push while they are away. Either they lose all of that, or they gain way smaller experience bot or top lane due to more allies being there. PLUS, if they farm, they're stealing their own ADC's farm! Win/win situation!


Teamfights

Teamfights are my favorite part when it comes to playing Lux because this is when her power really shines. She not only can peel for both your ADC and the rest of your team pretty well, but she has burst/damage + utility with her shield. This is why I love Lux so much, as she is very versatile in all areas. During teamfights, keep these things in mind:



1. Use your Lucent Singularity to poke enemy champions.
Before a teamfight actually occurs, Lux is able to poke some of the squishier champions down. This is very important before engaging a teamfight because Lux has the range and AOE from her Lucent Singularity. The less health the enemy champions have when you engage, the better the teamfight.



2. Stay back and throw your spells at your enemies.
This is the most important concept. As Lux, you are squishy and very vulnerable. Your positioning is key to surviving and dealing the most damage you can in a teamfight. You should be able to catch at least one, if not two, champions with your Light Binding. Your team can then engage and kill the enemy champions. You should ALWAYS throw out your Prismatic Barrier when the enemy team is poking/anyone engages, in order to soak up some damage for your teammates. Remember that this spell comes back to you, so if you miss a couple champions on the throw out, try to position yourself so your wand hits your allies on its way back to you.



3. Always remember to use your ultimate whenever you get the best possible chance
For example, say there is a Malphite on your team. Once he uses his Unstoppable Force and knocks them all up, that is your queue to ult. REMEMBER THAT THE ULTIMATE DOES NOT HAVE TO ONLY BE USED TO FINISH OFF AN ENEMY!! Dealing massive amounts of damage to a group of enemy champions will be way more effective in a teamfight than using your ultimate to finish off a single enemy. I know with the new cooldown reduction from a kill, it's tempting, but doing 1000 damage to 4-5 people is way more effective then doing 1000 damage to one person, and then 1000 damage to another person 20 seconds later.



4. Bursting down the ADC/Mage
If the enemy team isn't staying close together and there is no way to use your ultimate to hit more than one champion, this is another concept. Say the opponent's teams ADC is an Ashe. Ashe is very squishy! If you use your combo on her, she should die INSTANTLY (depending on her item build). This concept is to take the ADC out of the teamfight and make the teamfight a 4v5. You won't have your ultimate up for a fight if one breaks out right after, but as you made it a 4v5, your team has the advantage and you should use your other spells to help peel for your team!


5. Helping your ADC survive
This is another concept that I don't think a lot of people realize. The ADC's role is to do the most damage and carry the team! The downfall is that they are usually very squishy and need some type of peeling. Lux is perfect for this. Especially if the support on your team is that tanky Leona who is jumping into the enemy team, Lux stays back and casts her spells next to the ADC anyways. Here's the perfect example of how you can help your ADC survive:
Say there is an enemy Rengar who keeps trying to jump onto your ally, Lucian. Use your Prismatic Barrier to shield the damage rengar might inflict on your teammate. Right when he uses his ultimate to jump, you should immediately use your Light Binding and root Rengar in place. This will not only save your Lucian, but will take one more enemy out of the teamfight.


When is Lux a good choice?

There are 3 things to look out for before choosing Lux:



1. Look who you are up against
In Draft Pick, look at what your enemy team chooses for their different roles. If they chose a Vi jungle or a Xin Zhao, you might want to reconsider choosing Lux. Lux is a very immobile champion and both Vi and Xin Zhao have amazing gap closers, to where their team can follow up on.
This is even better if you already know who the mid laner is. Look above at the chart on who counters Lux. You NEVER want to pick Lux into a Fizz, unless you feel confident in the matchup. However, if the mid laner is Twisted Fate or Ziggs, you should have no problem picking Lux.



2. Look what what your teammates are choosing
If your teammates are choosing champions like Caitlyn, Sona, Malphite, or Amumu, Lux is a perfect pick! With Caitlyn and Sona's poke or Malphite and Amumu's heavy lockdown, you will be able to poke along with them or use that Final Spark right when one of those strong AOE ultimates come into play!



3. Your own capabilities
As you play Lux more and more, you will really get a feel for her. Once you start learning to master her, some of these counters won't be actual 'counters' to you anymore. For example, in the beginning of playing Lux, I always got destroyed by an Ahri due to her mobility. Now, I know how to play against an Ahri and how to position myself- I even win lane most of the time! If you feel completely comfortable with the situation, you have free reign to pick Lux!


Lux Synergy

There are 3 things to consider when looking at synergy with Lux:



1. Poke
Poking is one of the best ways to create an advantage before teamfights. If your team pokes the enemy champions health down, someone may be forced to recall. This will either make it a 4v5, or they will have to stay in the fight with half or low health. Here are some champions who work very well with Lux in poke:

Top: Cho'Gath, Gangplank, Jayce
Jungle: Nidalee
ADC: Caitlyn, Corki, Ezreal, Varus
Support: Brand, Karma, Sona, Vel'Koz, Zyra



2. Teamfight
Teamfighting is one of the most important parts of the mid/late game. If your team wins teamfights, you are able to freely take objectives like baron, dragon, or turrets/inhibitors. There are some champions who work very well with a teamfight composition (keep in mind that some of these champions are able to go in more than one certain position, I just put them in the position they are normally in; EX: Wukong can go top or jungle but he is normally top so I put him in the top category). Most of these champions have some type of ultimate or other ability that provides utility, such as CC or damage, to the enemy team:

Top: Cassiopeia, Galio, Gnar, Kennen, Malphite, Rumble, Wukong, Yasuo
Jungle: Amumu Fiddlesticks, Hecarim, Jarvan IV, Sejuani, Zac
ADC: Jinx, Twitch, Sivir, Vayne
Support: Alistar, Annie, Bard, Leona, Lulu, Sona



3. Engage
The third thing to look for is champions who engage. Engaging can be more tricky, as each individual champion needs a different set of utility from Lux in order to succeed. For example, you may follow up a Morgana bind with your own bind. From there, your team will be able to jump on that specific enemy champion, kill them, and then make the fight a 4v5. Whereas, with Jhin, you can use your bind from your Light Binding and slow from your Lucent Singularity to help ensure that his four shots hit. Here are champions that are good engagers:

Top: Irelia, Jax, Lissandra, Maokai, Sion
Jungle: Diana, Elise, Gragas, Nocturne, Vi, Volibear, Warwick, Zac
ADC: Ashe, Jhin, Kalista

I love Aery on Lux support because it makes her shields stronger, gives good poke, and can even proc with just auto attacks!

Take this if you prefer more damage over the extra little shield from Aery. This matches well with someone else who takes comet as well! Lane aggression and domination can be important so take this if you wish.

PHASE RUSH

Phase Rush
This is like the old Stormraider's, so I really don't recommend it at all since Lux can't benefit from it.

MANAFLOW BAND

Manaflow Band
Especially in the support role, Lux suffers with mana problems. Taking this will ensure you can cast your spells much more frequently! I love this because I am able to poke much more frequently and use that to my teams advantage. It also helps out in teamfights since I'll be getting mana back every 5 seconds!!

NULLIFYING ORB

Nullifying Orb
I can possibly see this if they have a Brand support and an AP team, but the mana is much more important.

THE ULTIMATE HAT

The Ultimate Hat
This can be taken if you are going to get a mana item for Lux to help her (esp AP), but just remember that you will have more mana issues early game since you won't have manaflow band. I normally only take this if I'm not taking Presence of Mind but still want my ult up more often if I have some damage in my build.

CELERITY

Celerity
As a support, there are many support items that give CDR, meaning I don't need the extra 10% unless I want to convert it into AP. I like celerity because in my personal fav build, Athenes, Ardent, Eye of the Watchers, and Redemption gives 40% anyways, and I want more MS to stack with my tier 2 boots and Ardent (417MS). Plus, having extra MS on a supporti s really useful when going to ward or get to objectives or anything faster. However, if for some reason you are going more AP and or dont have the resources to get CDR, feel free to take Transcendence!

TRANSCENDENCE

Transcendence
Although I do recommend celerity, trans is JUST as good!! I usually get this if I know I won't complete 40% CDR in my build OR if I am going to be building all CDR items becuase I want that extra CDR to be converted into AP!

ABSOLUTE FOCUS

Absolute Focus
This one relies too much on you having +70% for it to be worth it and as a support especially, it isn't as powerful as the other runes.

GATHERING STORM

Gathering Storm
I take GS over scorch d/t GS giving a lot of AP as the game goes along. All of Lux's spells scale well off of AP, including her shield, making it more valuable. Not to mention, support Lux could always use a little more AP when you are buying support items to make her a little stronger (or if you're going full AP, the more the better). However, if you want to try to win earlygame or want more poke, feel free to take scorch instead.

SCORCH

Scorch
Scorch is good for Lux support since you will be poking them with your E quite frequently-
I've had it to where I even ult and scorch kills them when my ult didn't.

WATERWALKING

Waterwalking
Even if you are roaming, it doesn't exactly do enough to be worth it. Save this for junglers.


Secondary Runes
Honestly, every secondary 'works' so I will list them all but I REALLY recommend precision with resolve not far behind. I will explain below.



Precision: (14AP adaptive, 5.5%AS)


PRESENCE OF MIND

Presence of Mind
This is the primary reason I recommend precision, due to being able to get mana back from kills/assists and having your ultimate cooldown reduced!!

COUP DE GRACE

Coup de Grace
Pick this to go with PoM because this will ensure the enemy is dead, or if you're using your AOE spells in teamfights, it will do a WHOLE lot more!!

CUT DOWN

Cut Down
Lux really struggles against tanks, so this can be taken instead of coup de grace if they have at least 3 tanks on their team (ex: Galio mid, Sej jungle, Leona supp, bruser top).




Resolve: (10AP, 65 health)


REVITALIZE

Revitalize
This makes your Prismatic Barrier stronger, which is really good for Lux support. It counts with all heals and shields, including when you buy Athene's Unholy Grail, and if you buy a Redemption or a Locket of the Iron Solari!! I like to take revitalize if I know I am not going to be doing much damage and are moreso relying on healing and shielding my teammates.

FONT OF LIFE

Font of Life
I take this second when I have an ADC that relies on attack speed (sorry MF and Jhin) and especially when others on my team can use it as well ( Xin Zhao, Gnar, etc. Both Lux's Q and E proc this. It works really well with Ardent Censer as well!

CHRYSALIS

Chrysalis
This can be taken if you don't want/need font of life or if you think you will have a hard or pokey lane earlier on. the 60 health can make a huge difference and it turns into AP once you get 4 kills, which is pretty nice since that can help you out mid game since you won't really need the 60 health anymore!

COSMIC INSIGHT

Cosmic Insight
This gives you that 45% cap and cooldown reduction on all aspects. Good for most supports!

BISCUIT DELIVERY

Biscuit Delivery
This gives you a ton more sustain in lane. I like them because I can stay in lane, poke longer, and harass more, but also take these if you feel you will need the sustain!

MAGICAL FOOTWEAR

Magical Footwear
For supports, 300g can be a lot. This can be a good alt esp since Lux is slow so the little bit of extra MS will help. Do NOT take this rune on matchups that require early movement speed (brand, etc).




Domination: (20AP, adaptive)


ZOMBIE WARD

Zombie Ward
With this rune, you will light up the map like a Christmas tree! As a support who is constantly putting down wards and clearing out wards with the red trinket, this really helps a lot with vision.

INGENIOUS HUNTER

Ingenious Hunter
I take this second if I am going to have Redemption and Locket of the Iron Solari in my build. This makes those items up super fast, giving your team a huge advantage.

EYEBALL COLLECTION

Eyeball Collection
For a more aggressive or more AP support build, Eyeball Collection mixed with Cheap Shot work really well. The extra AP really helps since you will naturally be behind in gold and cheap shot pairs really well with Scorch!!



Summoner Spells

Flash
This is a VERY important spell that YOU SHOULD TAKE 100% OF THE TIME!! Flash gives you so many opportunities to either escape, catch up to a champion, dodge spells, and more.

Exhaust
I normally only take exhaust if they have a hyper carry ADC like Vayne or Twitch
that I need to exhaust, as well as a Zed that can one shot my ADC. Exhaust makes trades/skirmishes in bot lane to your favour and is overall a good SS.

Ignite
I really love ignite because the ADC (or support sometimes) takes Heal and igniting them before they heal gives you guys a HUGE advantage. It also really helps when they have a healing support like Soraka and you need that grevious wounds.
Heal
Sometimes the ADC might take a different summoner spell, such as Exhaust, Cleanse, or Barrier. In those cases, take heal! Heal is also even better if you take the Revitalize rune!


Example Builds

These are just sample builds to show how you can build Lux BUT will change both based on champion select (ex: don't build Ardent for Jhin or build a locket super early since they have a Ziggs mid and Brand support), or the direction the game is taking (ex: buy a redemption as teamfights are breaking out, etc).




My Personal Build
Pros: Good healing, shielding, more supporty, cheap build, good for poke comps
Cons: Can't rely on for damage

When do I use this build? This is my personal favourite build for Lux support and I use this build in most of my games due to it being a middle ground for both utility and damage purposes. Athene's is actually a really good item for Lux because she uses spells from far away and then her shield can actually HEAL allies, which can really help when going against poke comps, or even against an assassin because the target your shielding ALSO gets a heal with it. I also love Athene's because buying it automatically gives you 50AP- getting Ardent makes the Athene's passive give 10 more AP, and redemption gives the passive 30 more AP- making Athene's give me a whopping 90AP total!! If I feel I won't need Athene's, I actually like to just get Rabadon's because it will let lux both do more AP AND her shield does scale off of AP so it really helps. Feel free to rearrange these items around. I will explain below this section in the 'Items in Depth' section.





AP Lux
Pros: Great damage, can burst any squishy down. Good if your team needs magic damage
Cons: Very costly for a support, lack of support role

When do I use this build? I know a lot of people who love playing Lux in the mid lane bot lane, so here it is. With this build, I usually use the precision tree for more damage. Note: I added Ardent Censer into the mix because it works so well with Lux, ESPECIALLY if your team is all AD. I normally go full AP if my team is all AD so this works out. Your shield on four allies gives them all the Ardent buffs, and you still have tons of magic damage to dish out, which can be really good in certain situations (plus, 40%CDR with this build!). Feel free to change Ardent for another either support item (like Athene's or especially twin shadows if you wanna make picks) or just go full AP. The negatives to this build is that usually the enemy support will have a Redemption and other support items to protect their team (locket for your burst), which puts your team at a disadvantage because you're building full AP, but this build is the MOST effective when your team has a lot of AD champs and your team needs magical damage, since Lux can dish out quite a lot in teamfights.





Shield Bot Build
Pros: LOTS of shielding and healing, very utility based, mikaels if needed
Cons: Very low damage, geared toward mid-late game and teamfight based

When do I use this build? This build is great if you have a really strong team but need the constant sustain. This build ensures your teamfights are extremely strong and your whole team can recover very quickly! The downfalls to this build is that you won't do nearly any damage and will be fully utility based, and that your ultimate will also be almost useless since you won't do much damage with it. Feel free to swap out Mikeals for another item if needed!!


Items In Depth

These are more in depth descriptions on every support item suitable for Lux and when you should be getting these items, especially items not listed above in the sample builds category!


I love taking these when you feel you will need your summoner spells up more. I usually get these if I don't need the damage and want my Exhaust up for teamfights more often, as well as having flash available faster. The best part about this item is due to Transcendence, if you're capped with CDR, it will give you 20AP!

These boots are extremely helpful when you need to do more damage because magic penetration is so important. I take these in half of my games, just depending on if I'm building damage or utility, or a mix of both. If I'm full utility, I never get these because I won't be doing much damage in the first place.

I always take these when they have a lot of CC and/or are magic damage based. Having tenacity for CC can save your life!

These aren't taken often, but are still important. I ONLY take these if they have a very physical damage based team (Ex: zed mid, adc, top riven, jungle vi).



This will be what you get on your first back and you should keep it. When you reach 500g, it will turn into Eye of Frost, which will give you wards like sightstone used to give!! DO NOT UPGRADE to Remnant of the Watchers until later on because that 950g you spend can be used towards your Athene's or Ardent vs paying 950g for just 15AP, 200 health, and an extra ward you can't place down anyways (3 wards on map only). Later on its more important bc it's the upgrade and that fourth ward can help when they remove a ward from the map.



This will be the upgrade from Frostfang or Eye of Frost, which should NOT be upgraded until your last item!! The 950g can be used towards another item- eye of frost gives you 3 wards which is plentyyy until you are almost full build!!

I actually think this item goes underrated on Lux. With redemption and ardent giving you mana regen, you get some nice AP from this, as well as being able to actually HEAL your allies. This is a really good item vs poke comps. A lot of times I may go APish but I still get this item since it's just so good on Lux.

Some games you don't really need to get this item until later on. HOWEVER, when I play with Kog as my ADC, I usually rush it. This item works SO well on Lux because she can shield all four allies, making Lux with hard physical comps strong (or like, a Kayle top).

Redemption is just so good because it has the capability to heal all 5 of your teammates, which can help vs poke comps or save some of your teammates lives, and you can use it even if you're dead!! It also has a long range so you can use it from pretty far away!

I normally only buy this item vs team comps with a lot of burst (Orianna),
or if they have a very strong AOE ult (Ziggs, Brand) and I need the shield to protect my team.

This normally isn't bought d/t ADC getting a Quicksilver Sash, but sometimes this item is needed to help your ADC (or other teammate) survive all of the CC. The shield power is also SUPER strong, making it a good item for utility Lux- super situational.

As weird as this item looks, it's really AWFUL on Lux. You ulting gives your ADC's auto attacks some burn damage for a few seconds, which is really cool! It works better with people like Thresh of course, but you buy this for one purpose-when your ADC is LITERALLY carrying because this plus Ardent and other support items boosts your ADC to a million.

I love love getting this early because Lux can get stacks really easily, especially in the support role. However, there are many times where this can be bad, including if the ADC is dying in teamfights first instead of you- they will dish out way more damage and are more important. Stacks are a high risk high reward and should always be sold for your last item if you do get it.

This can be important if you are against a very heal-y team and need to cut down that healing. The MPEN is also super strong and important if you're going more AP Lux!!

I normally like to get this item last just to dish over my damage to late game, but you don't normally get this if you are going full support. Works better with AP support.

This item is good if you need armor and want AP. It can also help a lot if you are getting aimed for in fights from say, a Zed.

This item is good if you are going AP Lux and need magic resist/a spellshield!

This can be really good for Lux support due to good stats for the price and the ghosts being able to catch someone out!! If I am not doing damage with my personal fav build and don't need void, I'll buy these instead!! It's strong vs stealthed/assassin champs!

This can help with your mana and more poke damage! Seraph's also works in this situation if you would like.

Get this to maximize your damage as AP Lux!


Gameplay

Early Game: The idea here is to try to poke with your E and get autos in (without taking tons of damage in return). Lux excels at poking in lane and keeping pressure on the ADC. I always throw my E out when the ADC goes to kill a minion, that way they are forced to dodge my spell or miss the farm. With certain matchups like Caitlyn, Lux has a very good level 2 all in with her Q and E, so feel free to communicate that to the ADC if you guys can make it to level 2 before the enemies. PLEASE notice the importance of level 2, 3, and 6. You and your ally want to be level 2 either before or at the same time as the enemies. If you guys are still level 1 when they're level 2, they can all in on you guys and win, or completely block you guys from getting CS or doing anything. At level 3, you can get your shield, which means you have an advantage with trades now. Level 6 means all ins with ultimates, so always try to stay on par or ahead of the enemies. Once you go back, make sure to purchase a Control Ward and put it in the appropriate bush, depending if you are on the blue side or red (blue- tribush, red- bush in river). Once you are 6, try to poke them down until you feel you can burst them. Feel free to all in on the ADC (or support) if you land a Q. Your combo should either kill the ADC, get them low enough for your teammate to kill them, or they will have to use summoner spells in order to survive. If the enemy team recalls, make sure to push out your lane before going back and feel free to roam mid and try to catch a Q on their mid laner before going back, or try to push with your ADC to get that first turret gold.

Mid Game: The idea here is catching people in Q's and making sure places like dragon and baron are warded. Control wards are also important. Vision can win games. Try not to just throw your Q out because it is important and you don't want to miss the perfect opportunity because you threw it out randomly and now it's on CD. If you see your team ready to fight, go ahead and Q to engage. If you see the enemy team coming at your ADC or team, feel free to Q them for some disengage. Also, don't be shy with your ultimate! It's a low cooldown. Try to hit as many as you can with it, or help your team burst one enemy threat down. Also try to stay near the ADC the whole time and shield all your teammates when possible.

Late game: ALWAYS WARD BARON/ELDER DRAGON WHEN POSSIBLE in these situations and keep places warded. Stay as a group to make sure no one is caught out because that can cost you the game. Buy control wards when you can before full build and try to get your team to as well. Vision is very important. In teamfights, use your appropriate active items if you have any, shield allies, and use your utility to secure success.
