How to summon the Blood Storm with Kennen

By Shark of Void
Hello everyone!
I am Shark of Void. My highest elo is the Grandmaster. Here is my Kennen guide!

I'll tell you what I like/dislike about this champion.

Like

  1. It's an electric mage!

  2. He is universal.

  3. Kennen is the best blind pick on top.

  4. He is god in teamfights.

  5. One of the few mobile mages.

Dislike

  1. Sometimes it annoys me that I can't hit enemy with skills.

  2. It's hard to get back into the game if you're behind.

  3. The hero model is too small, you can lose yourself XD.

  4. Weak against tanks.

So, if you want to add Kennen to your pool, I'll show you the examples of pool with Kennen:

This is the best pool for Kennen for the following reasons:
1. Kennen and Malphite are not difficult heroes, so you only need to master Gnar.
2. Kennen deals magic damage, and Gnar deals physical damage, so you can adapt to the type of damage your team needs.
3. Malphite is a tank, so if your team needs it, you will also adapt.
4. All these champs have massive teamfight ultimates, so you won't need to rebuild your style of play.
5. Kennen is good against Malphite, Malphite is good against Gnar, Gnar can passively farm against Kennen.

If you want to be a Two Trick Pony, then the following pool will suit you:

1. Kennen deals magic damage, and Trundle deals physical damage.
2. Kennen is bad against tanks, and Trundle is good against tanks.
3. Kennen is good at teamfights, and Trundle is good at splitpush.
4. Kennen and Trundle are easy to master champs, so you can quickly master both.

Now that you have decided on the pool (or OTP), I will tell you about the best role and heroes for the second role.

1. The jungler should be able to kill jungle monsters quickly and as efficiently as possible.
2. He has to kill jungle objects and use Smite, so if you have a bad reaction, it's better to play on support .
3. A good jungler should anticipate the actions of an enemy jungler and ping his team about his movements.
In fact, the roles are almost the same, I'll tell you about their small differences
1. Support should stand 2 by 2, so you will need to memorize matchups and play with another player, if you are not ready for a bad partner's game, then it's better to go into the jungle.
2. Support should be able to properly roam, and it's harder than ganks.
3. The support should be engaged in the vision more than the jungler .

Well, now it's time to choose a hero!

1. These heroes have a similar style of play in the jungle.
2. These champs have a similar style of play as Kennen.
3. Fiddlesticks and Amumu are easy to master, so you don't have to study them for a long time.
4. You take Amumu when you need a tank.
5. Fiddlesticks you take when you need damage.

1. Although their style differs, the goal in teamfights is the same as Kennen's - to catch as many enemies as possible.
2. Rell is good when you have an agressive ADC like Draven, Samira, Caitlyn, etc.
3. Renata Glasc is good when you have an hyper carry like Kog'Maw, Vayne, Jinx, etc.
4. Yes, these heroes are more complicated than in the jungle, but, on the other hand, it will be more interesting for you to master them.

PROS

+ Deals AP damage.
+ Has a good poke.
+ One of the few mobile mages.
+ Good in teamfights.
+ Hasn't bad matchups.
+ Has one of the best initiations in game.
+ Can protect carry in your team.
+ Has a lot of stuns.

CONS

- Squishy.
- Your team will not have a tank on top.
- Bad into tanks (but playable).
- If you fall, it will be difficult for you to get up.
- Bad without good farming.

Welcome to the one of the most difficult part of this guide, because if you want to win and really play Kennen in any matchup, you will have to read this entire chapter.

SORCERY

Basically, this is my choice in warriors.
Summon Aery allows us to poke the enemy well, thereby preparing him for our all-in. Let me explain why this is bad in tanks: they tolerate our poke too easily and on the lane with them we concentrate on farming, instead of poke.
Phase Rush allows us to make short trades and run away from the enemy if he goes all in. For more detailed information, see Detailed matchups.

Nimbus Cloak help us when we go all-in. This gives Kennen a speed that will allow him to easily catch up with the fleeing enemy, even if he uses Flash.

Kennen is the range champion so he doesn't take much damage from the enemy, so Absolute Focus can almost always be active on him.
I take Transcendence with Phase Rush because we will be doing short trades and will not be able to maintain health at a high level, so Ability haste will allow us to do these short trades more often.

Scorch gives us even more damage on the lane, so we prepare the enemy even faster for our all in!

SECONDARY TREES

Since Kennen is a mage, he has less HP than bruisers, so he can use this rune well to deal more damage to enemies on the lane and not only.

More atack speed => more poke => more damage! With it we can easier to farm.

For the adaptive runes I take first 2 slots I take 2 adaptive AP is great for early game and snowballing, and the attack speed from the Legend: Alacrity is enough.
Third slot: This should be the resistance you're going against - magic resist against AP tops or armor vs AD top.

PRECISION

Basically, this is my choice in tanks.
Conqueror helps us in protracted fights against tanks. He gives a lot of AP and restores health, so Kennen can more easily endure the hated tanks.

I take Triumph because it's just the best rune available here. He restores our health after kill and gives us more gold for it.

Legend: Alacrity allow us to easily farm and damage more!

So, we are playing against tanks => they have more HP than us and we'll hurts them more!

SECONDARY TREES

Since we are focused on the farm against tanks, we need as many items as possible, so we take a Magical Footwear so as not to spend precious money on it. Also, we will not be hindered by additional speed from it.

Future's Market allow us to buy core items early and to get advantage on lane!

For the adaptive runes I take first 2 slots I take 2 adaptive AP is great for early game and snowballing, and the attack speed from the Legend: Alacrity is enough.
Third slot: This should be the resistance you're going against - magic resist against AP tops or armor vs AD top.

DOMINATION

Basically, this is my choice in Mages or Assasins or Bruisers-assasins (like Fiora or Camille).
I take it with Ignite because i take it when i have to kill enemies early.
Electrocute give us burst damage to kill enemy easily!

I take Taste of Blood for extra stamina on the lane.
I don't take Cheap Shot because Kennen really need heal with Taste of Blood.

I take Eyeball Collection because it's profitable rune for killing emenies.
The more you kill, the easier it will be for you to kill again.

Ingenious Hunter allow us to use Hextech Rocketbelt, Zhonya's Hourglass, Banshee's Veil more often for 30 seconds!

SECONDARY TREES

Cosmic Insight allows us to use summoner spells more often and together with Ingenious Hunter allows us to use items 40 seconds more often!

Future's Market allow us to buy core items early and to get advantage on lane!

For the adaptive runes I take first 2 slots I take 2 adaptive AP is great for early game and snowballing. Third slot: This should be the resistance you're going against - magic resist against AP tops or armor vs AD top.

INSPIRATION

This is a universal rune for playing duo.
You stun enemy with Mark of the Storm and your teammate jungler will easily kill an enemy slowed down by Glacial Augment.

Allows you to bypass the enemy and make unexpected ganks on him.

Future's Market allow us to buy core items early and to get advantage on lane!

Cosmic Insight allows us to use summoner spells and Hextech Flashtraption more often and to use items 10 seconds more often!

SECONDARY TREES

The synergy of Nimbus Cloak and Hextech Flashtraption is huge. You can ambush and bypass your enemies very often.

More poke on lane, so you can prepare your enemy to gank.

For the adaptive runes I take first 2 slots I take 2 adaptive AP is great for early game and snowballing. Third slot: This should be the resistance you're going against - magic resist against AP tops or armor vs AD top.
FLASH: is the most important spell in the game. It helps you from escaping nasty situations and also for chasing and killing enemies whenever you can't reach them. Always take this every game!
Kennen also can initiate teamfight with Flash, it's so beautiful!
TELEPORT: I take it against tanks when I'm not sure I can kill them. It allows you to play the map in a versatile manner. If you make a mistake with wave management, it will help you get back on the lane and fix it.
IGNITE: I use it against mages, assasins, or briusers-assasins or in cases where I need to get an advantage early, more in Detailed Matchups.

Now let's delve into the items.

START

It allow us to damage enemy with auto attacks and heal with it. Also it give us HP that help us to stay lane longer.
Health Potion will help you stay on the lane longer until the first back.

CORE

This item is really good against teams that don't have a lot of tanks/bruisers.
Gives all the characteristics that Kennen needs.
Active allow you easily initiate without Flash.
Also myth bonus give us magic penetration tnat we need.
We take this mythic if the enemy has a lot of tanks/bruisers, so we can healing with it and Conqueror very well! Thanks to passive, we will damage well with TRUE damage. Also, thanks to the mythical bonus, we will be able to use skills often.
The Sorcerer's Shoes gives us speed for the kite, penetration for more damage.

SITUATIONAL

Disclaimer: you can buy these items in any slot, depending on the need.

First situational item, that you want to use whenever you are standing against any composition, that can easily get through your team straight on you.
You can also build it when you have to live after your Flash initiation.
My favorite magic penetration item, that will make sure that you are able to deal damage during mid/late game. You should always look around how much MR are your opponents having and then decide, when do you want to buy this item.
A useful item against initiators and Nocturne (because it will allow you to see everything even if he use Paranoia) and also against full AP teams.
Must-have item against sutain champs like Vladimir, Aatrox, Samira, Nami, Maokai etc. Even though you can poke well, it's not so useful if your opponents can heal it up.
I take it against teams that have shields. It allow us to penetrate it!
I take it against full AP teams when i have to tank.
I take it when i have to carry game.
This gives us a lot of AP and move speed. Good item for carring.
Last item in every game. It give us the most AP in game!
You can buy it when you have been fed and you will be fed, only this way.

TRINKET

Stealth Ward will allow you to survive the lane phase, protecting you from the enemy jungler.
I always use it after lane phase because Kennen is a trap champion that have to be invisible for enemies to kill them!
Never use it.

Time to take a look at Kennen skills!

PASSIVE: MARK OF THE STORM

Kennen's abilities apply a stack for 6 seconds. At 3 stacks, enemies are stunned for 1.25 second and Kennen gains 25 energy.
Kennen's passive allow him to trade without getting damage, so abuse it!

Q: THUNDERING SHURIKEN

Kennen throws a shuriken, dealing 75 / 125 / 175 / 225 / 275 (+85% of ability power) magic damage to the first enemy hit.
Q This is our bread and butter. He deals the main damage and is a good poke on the lane. The more often you hit it to them, the faster you will win!

Tips

W: ELECTRICAL SURGE

Passive: Every 5th attack deals an additional 35 / 45 / 55 / 65 / 75 (+35% of ability power) (+0.8 / 0.9 / 1.0 / 1.1 / 1.2% per bonus attack damage) magic damage.

Active: Kennen sends out a blast of electricity, dealing 70 / 95 / 120 / 145 / 170 (+80% of ability power) magic damage to nearby enemies affected by Mark of the Storm.

Satchel Charge will automatically destroy towers below 25 / 27.5 / 30 / 32.5 / 35% of their health..
W is our main source of passive labels! Try to hit the enemy with an enhanced auto attack and he will quickly run out of steam.

Tips

  • You can zoning enemy with enchanced attack.

E: LIGHTNING RUSH

Kennen turns into a ball of lightning, gaining 100% movement speed, dealing 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+80% of ability power) magic damage to enemies he passes through, and becoming ghosted for 2 seconds. If Kennen damages at least one enemy, he gains 40 Energy.

After this ability ends, Kennen gains 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 80% attack speed for 4 seconds. Kennen can recast to end this ability early.
E is our mobility ability, use it wisely!

Tips

  • Use it to push the wave.
  • Use it to escape gank.
  • Use it to kite enemies.

R: SLICING MAELSTROM

Kennen unleashes a magical storm, dealing 40 / 75 / 110 (+22.5% of ability power) magic damage to all nearby enemies every 0.6 seconds, and gaining 20 / 40 / 60 armor and magic resist for 3 seconds. Successive hits deal 10% increased damage for each hit the enemy has already suffered.
It's one of the best teamfights ability. Use it to mark enemies and stun them ALL!

How to use map?

Now I will show you how to use the map and how to learn how to use it. And no, it's not just a look and that's it, it needs a lot more skill! So, what is worth paying attention to?

1. Your/enemy jungler

Since you are playing on Kennen, and he is a lane bully hero and will push the lane, it is important that you look at the map and track the enemy and your jungler. For example, if you see an enemy jungler on the bot lane, then you can play more aggressively, or if your jungler is nearby, the same thing, you can play more aggressively. Also, your jungler may need help at the rift scuttler , this is a good opportunity to fight 2v1 and get an advantage!

2. The Battle for the Rift Herald

If your team is preparing to take the Rift Herald , then you should prepare, push a wave, return or take the right position.

3. Missing midlaner

Sometimes an enemy midlaner will want to kill electric yordle, so you should notice its absence in time and not engage in battle with your laner until the enemy midlaner returns to the mid.

4. Enemy's items

Well, everything is simple here, in order not to suddenly be embarrassed by the fact that you went to all in but could not kill, and it turned out that the enemy bought magic resists, check enemy items before initiation.

5. Incoming wave

If the next wave is a wave with siege minion that you should push the lane and come back, more on that later.

And the last one:
To learn how to look at the map once and for all, use this timer, thanks to it,
after a while you yourself will look at the map every 10 seconds.

How to learn to farm?

Farming is an integral part of a good game. Since Kennen is a AP ranged champion, it's difficult to finish off minions on him, so I'll show you how I learned to do it.

1. Use the runes as shown in the picture.
2. For the first 3 days, just play with these runes in training farm without enemies and try to finish off as many minions as possible with auto attacks.
3. After that, add the Sivir bot and try to dodge her Q and do the same every day until you realize that you have learned to farm "like a robot".

Jungle tracking

First of all, look at the map and find out which side the enemy jungler started from. So you will understand in which direction he will move and from this you will build your game.

There are 2 types of junglers:

Ganking junglers

Example: Hecarim, Vi, Xin Zhao, Gragas, Rek'Sai, Lee Sin, Trundle, Volibear, Warwich, etc.
Such junglers prefer to do more aggression on the map, rather than farm. They are strong in the early game and after receiving the third level, they begin their aggression: they can go to the first gank that usually happens at 2:40-2:50, try to counter jungle your jungler, or continue farming. Against them, I advise you to put a totem near the river at 2:30. There are also junglers who can do lvl 2 gank, such as Shaco Jarvan IV or Twitch , against them I advise you to play passively until the wave with siege minion , and then not to be afraid, except for lvl 3 gank.

farming junglers

Example: Amumu, Ekko, Diana, Master Yi, Evelynn, Karthus, Fiddlesticks, Kayn, Shyvana, etc.
Such junglers prefer to farm, instead of agressive playing. They are USUALLY weak in the early game and can farm fastly and easily, so they do full clear. Against them, I advise you to put a totem near the river at 3:10.
I also want to mention that sometimes you can't predict the actions of a jungler, because no one knows what's in his head, so sometimes lvl 3 Amumu can come to you, so be always on the lookout!

Wave managements

Minions Mechanic

On the first wave, both waves meet at the middle of lane at the same time. If no one hits them they will kill each other and lane will not push.

If there is same minions but they meet closer to your tower. This will start to push the wave against the enemy tower.
This is because your next minion wave reaches the enemy wave earlier, so they start to attack the enemy minion wave first and kill them faster, this will cause the wave to start pushing away from your tower.

The closer the waves of minions are to your tower, the more they will push off from you, as your minions will approach faster than the enemies.

If you are not there you will lose gold and exp.

So, we can use it to get an advantage.

Level 1 push to you

If you know the enemy is helping for the jungler, you can Go further in lane and start to hold the enemy wave near his tower and when your wave reaches that part you go into the bush this will make enemy minions all target one of your minions and kill it fast. The next enemy wave will also reach faster and start pushing.

So just last hit the minions as late as possible to make it come to your tower.
As you can see, by the third wave, the enemy has 4 more minions.

Freezing

This is used to deprive the enemy gold and even experience.
freezing a wave means that you know that wave will push to you, so you will not attack minions other than last hitting them.
If the enemy wave is bigger, and it's close to your tower, you will need 4 extra enemy minions to freeze.

Pros to freezing a wave:

1. Freezing can deprive enemy CS which will give you bigger gold advantage.
2. The enemy have to overstay in lane to get experience and gold, which will make it easier for your jungler to gank you.
3. You are close to your tower, so it's hard for enemy jungler to gank you.
4. When you are behind and enemy roams, you can freeze to get back.

Cons to freezing a wave:

1. The enemy can roam.
2. If enemy jungler comes and kills you at your tower, you miss a lot of minions and allow them to take turret plates quickly.
Fast push

You use all your skills to push the wave towards the enemy tower.
You need to use fast push in the following cases:
1. Whem you killed the enemy.
2. When you have to back.
3. When enemy is freezing.

In each case, you can ask your jungler to help you.

Slow push

Slow pushing means only attacking minions to last hit them, this will make you have a big minion wave so it will be hard for the enemy to fight in it without taking a lot of damage.
Also you can dive enemy and he'll lose all wave!!!
Recalling

It seems that there is nothing difficult here, just press recall and return to base, but if you do it wrong, you can lose even in the easiest matchup and lose a lot of gold and experience, therefore, I will teach you how to do recall correctly.

1. Wave state
Firstly, come back just before the wave with siege minion , this is done because this minion takes a very long time to kill, so you will lose less experience and gold while the enemy is trying to kill him. But before that, look at the waves of minions:
If it's a slow push to your tower, then freeze it. If this is a slow push to the enemy tower, then use fast push, and if the waves are the same, then also use fast push.

2. Amount of gold
Everything is simple here: if you lack 50-100 gold to the item, it's better to stay and farm it.

3. Objective timers
Take a look at the upcoming object respawn timers. If there are about 40 seconds left before them, then you should return to the base to be ready for battle with full resources and spent gold.

And the most useful advice for Kennen: after recall on cooldown, use Lightning Rush, because you don't lose anything and get to the lane faster by increasing the speed of movement!

Early game

In the early game you have to farm, poke and zone the enemy. Use trading combinations to avoid retaliatory damage. If your jungler needs help, don't be stingy, help if you can. If you are standing against a tank, then I advise you to call a jungler for help, you will not be able to cope without him. You must also protect the RIFT HERALD .

Some unpopular tricks that any heroes can use.

1. Fake recoll
The trick is to start returning to the base near the bush, and in the last milliseconds go into the bush. From the outside, it looks like you have returned to the base.

This technique can be used in different ways: so that the enemy feels safe and comes out from under the tower, and you kill him from the bush, or, for example, the enemies will start a teamfight, because they will think that they have a numerical advantage, and then you come out of the bush and kill everyone.

2. Fake warding
The trick is to pretend to put a ward, but not actually put it. If you have a good opponent, he will inform his jungler that you "put" the ward in that place. After that, you can actually put the ward, but in a different place, so the enemy jungler will gank you from the side where you have a ward.

Thanks to this advice, you will be able to avoid the enemy jungler's ganks more often.

3. How to get wards more often
The trick is to re-buying a free ward after returning to base, and if you have gained a level by returning to base, re-buying the ward will reduce its cooldown by a certain number of seconds.

Thanks to this, we can reduce the coldown of wards and use them more often, thereby affecting the map more.

4. Pass between t1 and t2 on the mid without damage!
Kennen is one of 11 heroes who can pass through midlane towers without damage. Now I'll show you how to do it.
1. Click on the place between the three stones.
2. Click on the edge of the leaf.
3. Congratulations, you passed without damage!
P.S. in the opposite direction, do the same, only in reverse order.

Mid game

Do the same as in the early game, only now you will still need to go to the objects and help the team pick them up. You will learn more about teamfights soon.

Late game

In the late game, you have to focus on teamfights. Here any death will lead to defeat, so be careful. You can hide in the bushes and wait for the enemy carry to kill him and finish the game. Important objects are Baron Nashor and Elder Dragon , I do not advise you to give them away. Remember: one teamfights will cost the enemies of the game, so show yourself in all its glory!

Teamfights

Now we move on to what Kennen is best at: teamfights.

Before the teamfigt, make sure that there are no more enemies than you, otherwise you will be defeated. I advise you to look at the enemy summoner's spells and items. If they have Exhaust I would not advise initiating first.
Your main task is to damage as much as possible to the enemy team and kill carry. You can do this in different ways:
1. Go to the enemies in the back
2. Go ahead.
3. Wait for the initiation of your allies and follow them.
4. Wait for the initiation of enemies and make counter initiations.

You can also protect your carries with your stuns.

Dragons for Kennen

Now I will show you from the best to the worst dragon buffs for Kennen.
Cloud Drake 's buff is the best buff for Kennen, because thanks to him, he can get to the enemy faster even under slow down.
Well, everything is logical here, Infernal Drake 's buff gives us damage, so we can kill enemies better.
Chemtech Drake 's buff gives us tenacity that helps us survive enemy control and reach enemy carry.
Ability Haste, which Hextech Drake 's buff gives us, allows us to use skills more often and attack faster.
Resists with Mountain Brake's buff + resists with our Slicing Maelstrom will allow us to live in teamfights for a long time.
Heal with Ocean Drake 's buff is useless :(

Dragon souls for Kennen

Now I will show you from the best to the worst dragon souls for Kennen.
Cloud soul 's buff is the best buff for Kennen, because thanks to him, He can run like Sonic in a teamfight and no one will be able to catch up him!
Slowing down the enemy that this soul gives allows you to keep them in your ult longer.
By reducing the damage with this soul, you will be able to live longer in the teamfight and deal more damage.
Infernal soul allows you to poke the enemy better and deal more damage.
The shield will allow you to live a little longer in team battles and withstand the poke of the enemy.
Heal with Ocean soul is useless :(

Click on the champion icon to move to the matchup.

Aatrox

Matchup: EASY+
Take Ignite and Phase Rush.

You dominate this matchup. Use Lightning Rush to dodge his The Darkin Blade or Infernal Chains, and poke him. If he pressed World Ender, just run away with Lightning Rush. Buy Oblivion Orb early so that he doesn't overheal your poke. You can one shot him at 35% health if he doesn't have MR.

Akali

Matchup: EASY
Take Ignite and Electrocute.

Very easy matchup. Just dodge her Shuriken Flip and one shot after 6 lvl. All of your skill damage Akali in Twilight Shroud, so, it can't safe her. You can one shot her at 70% health if she doesn't have MR.

Akshan

Matchup: EASY+
Take Ignite and Electrocute.

First, don't stand behind the minions, so he won't be able to hit you with Avengerang. Secondly, I advise you not to waste Lightning Rush for aggression in this matchup, since you will need to get away from his Heroic Swing with your Lightning Rush. After lvl 6, you easily kill him. You can one shot him at 60% health if he doesn't have MR.

Camille

Matchup: Medium
Take Ignite and Electrocute.

You have to kill her a couple of times before her myth item otherwise you will lose. Never use Lightning Rush to attack, only to dodge her Wall Dive, Poke her and don't get caught by Tactical Sweep. If you kill her a couple of times, you will win easily. You can one shot her at 50% health if she doesn't have MR.

Cho'Gath

Matchup: HARD
Take Teleport and Conqueror.

Before level 6, you have a chance to kill him, after that, don't even try. Focus on farming. Dodge his Rupture, otherwise you will get a lot of damage. Don't get substituted and don't die, that's the whole lane phase against tanks. You can one shot him at 35% health if he doesn't have MR.

Darius

Matchup: MEDIUM
Take Phase Rush and Ignite.

Poke him on the lane. If he hitted Apprehend, use Lightning Rush to escape with Phase Rush. Run away if he put 3-4 stacks of Hemorrhage on you. You can one shot him at 45% health if he doesn't have MR.

Dr. Mundo

If you want to climb, you need a good mindset. Here are some rules to follow:
  • Play for improvement, not for LP
Stop thinking about LP. Firstly, you worry, afraid of losing them and start making mistakes or playing too passively. Secondly, if you play well, LP will come to you.

  • NEVER blame anyone else but yourself for losing games
Yes, there are always losing games because of the team, but you can't control your allies. You ALWAYS make mistakes, find and fix them, and there will be fewer losing games.

  • Disable Chat
If you are not in high elo, then chat is a useless thing. You will be distracted by him, maybe spend time on correspondence, annoying the team even more. All this leads you to defeat, so don't do it!

  • Know when to stop
Tilted? Mad? Tired? Stop playing. It is better to play 3 games with a good mood and win them than to lose 5 games with a bad mood.
Focus on yourself, and only yourself.
